Such a busy place on Easter Sunday. My friend and I decided to share an antipasto platter. Certainly a great choice!! The large wooden platter came laden with a selection of four different meats, delicious hummus, olives , pickled capsicum, tiny gherkins and artichokes. Warm bread was served as an accompaniment . There was more than enough for the two of us for lunch. We were happy with our selection of the Bird in Hand Rose as our wine . We finished this off with a warming coffee on what was a very cold day.

This winery was so wonderful! Gorgeous views, really nice places to sit and have some wine and cheese. You can get a blanket and sit on the grass or at a table.

Bird in Hand is a definite highlight on any Adelaide Hills wine tour, or if you're just checking out woodside, buying cheese and apples make sure you drop by. The setting is immaculate, manicured lawns, sandstone walls and wrought iron garden furniture tell of a level of finish which can be found both aesthetically and on the palette when you taste their finely crafted wines. Their flagship and biggest seller is the Bird in Hand sparkling, it's a pinot noir and holds a wonderful blush colour from being left on skins. The 2011 vintage I tried today is a little drier than the 2009 we've been drinking for sometime now. It still has faint cherry and strawberry notes and the clean crisp finish is there with just the right acidity. Possibly my favourite drop to kickstart a celebration. All the other wines are very worthwhile also, so take the opportunity and try them out for yourself. The barrel shed is a great venue for functions and special occasions and there is even a foosball table in it currently!

A beautiful venue for a wedding! The staff, food and wine are all excellent. Staff were so helpful, nothing too much trouble! The barrels can be moved around to suit your needs! Beautiful location for the perfect wedding photos, without having to leave the venue! Highly recommended!

Beautiful scenery shame about the service

There's a bigger menu on normal days). Of course you come for the wines and they didn't disappoint! They have a lovely sparkling shiraz to start and some excellent 'museum' quality shiraz to finish. It was a wonderful visit and I would recommend it!

My partner and I went early to Barristers Block last a Monday morning because I'm Friday Sam asked…read moreme to marry him! We couldn't wait ! A wedding chit chat had informed me that this winery was beautiful & you could bring in your own caterers! Brilliant! Sam's brother in law owns a wicked restaurant and we'd only have him cater for us! We went quite early so should have been the first people there for the day. The grounds were beautiful! As we walked in to the cellar door the older lady behind the counter asked us if we were there for a tasting of which we promptly told her we were looking for our wedding venue & how excited we were. This is how the conversation went. BB Lady - Well our events manager isn't in today. Us - That's a shame! Could you tell us your availability for late next year? BB Lady - what date do you want? Us - Um well we're not fussed ! Whenever you're free? Could we check it out? BB Lady - Sigh walks over to the diary Us - Well were happy for anytime in November? BB Lady - There are no dates available for November. Us - Um ok. Silence. Us - just a quick question, Sam's bro in law owns a restaurant and we can't wait to have him cater for us! Is that ok with your winery? BB Lady - No we don't do that. Us - Oh. Well that's the only reason we came out here because we were told otherwise. Um. Thanks anyway. As we start to walk out. A little bit of context. Sam and I love wine. If the lady had even been a touch nicer to us we would have at least done a tasting and bought wine. Super disappointed with what happened & never plan to go there again.

I'd have to say that James Tilbrook is one of the best winemakers in the Adelaide Hills (you could…read moreprobably say in Australia to be fair). The cellar door is tucked away in the old Onkaparinga Woollen Mills building in Lobethal, and is not the easiest place to find. It's also not a particularly huge a space, nor is it catered to groups looking for a nice/clean cellar door experience. But the point is the wine. It is superb. In particular, the Chardonnay is remarkable. The estate chardonnay is good - very, very good. But you should treat yourself and drink the reserve chardonnay while you're there. Made from special little pockets of heaven it is very much like being transported to Burgundy. The only difference is that this wine would cost you about ten times the price if it came from France. The other wines are great too, don't get me wrong (very lovely Pinot and a cracking Syrah as well). I always enjoy coming to this place because when I go wine tasting I want to do that - taste wine. There's cheese/meat plates which are very easy to eat, and some quite delicious options of wood-oven pizzas. They have lovely outdoor seating, and some tables nestled back in the space between all of the barrels. This really gives you a feel that this is a working space. It's not the same clean "restaurant style" experience you might get at other big wineries. But just look at that glass of delicious liquid you wisely purchased!! A couple of warnings for those of you reading this and thinking, "wow, a cellar door I've not heard of/been to, and this guy thinks it's amazing, let's drop the kids off with their grandparents and head for the hills". Don't expect to necessarily have the experience befitting of the wine. The place itself is quite small, at least the cellar door is, and they can get quite busy and only having one or two people working there means it might be a few minutes before anyone asks you where you're from, why you're there and all the other usual cellar door chit-chat. Maybe just wait, read some of the tasting notes and slow down. The wine is worth waiting for. That being said. The last time I was there the winemaker sat with us to eat, took a genuine interest in our experience of his wine, remembered we'd been there before (about a year ago) and asked our opinion on his plans for the new cellar door location he's putting together. Now you don't get that at Jacobs Creek! After you've been to this little hole in the wall place you might want somewhere a little bigger, and with some views and there are several other options very close by. But do yourself a favour and buy a couple of bottles of Chardonnay before you leave because it is a very wise investment in your happiness.
