Interesting how this place struck me. First impression: 5 stars. The server was fun, basically said everything on the menu was amazing but actually gave reasons why! When I made my order, she said it was great. OK... but it was. It's one of those Western places that is food to excess. They just stuff your plate with food. Even without the curds appetizer (a must for me), I probably should have ordered just the half dinner instead of full. There were THREE chicken-fried steaks on my plate. I got through two of them smothered in the country gravy, and had to call it quits, paired with some curds and fries. Absolutely loved the fries, they taste like fresh potato fried, which is exactly what I would expect in Idaho. Texas toast was fresh bread. Server brought me fry sauce (an Idaho tradition) on request and gave me a second dip for the road. That was first impression. But I saved some food for the next day and discovered the truth: It's really salty. The curds seemed a bit oily when fresh, and on day 2 (after refrigeration) they were caked together and are overbreaded. And after having had other curds on the same trip, that's not just a second impression, that's a fact - bread to curd ratio is off. Corn on the side wasn't listed with the dish but was canned, so I didn't eat one with dinner or the next day. The sawmill gravy is salty, and so is the breading on the steak (not the steak itself, fortunately). Even the fries surprised me how they went from tasting fresh to tasting salty over less than a day. Again, fortunately fry sauce isn't that salty, but I didn't have enough to drench the salt taste away. I'm a low-salt person, so part of this was my fault for diving in without testing the waters, and perhaps a bit blind out of hunger to what I was ingesting. But the health is a big minus on these and it affects the taste, so in the end I've gotta knock my rating down a bit unfortunately. Because we love the people who work here and the service. Sure, they have some good beers on tap (if you read a lot of my reviews, you know that's an important feature for me to have at any place I visit. Honestly, if you don't have beer on tap, I'm probably not going to stop by. Nothing personal, I just like fresh beer on tap). They also have a nice menu. The place is interesting as when you walk in, you walk past the kitchen area. It's neat, because you get to see the cooks working away. Wave and say hello! They're a hard-working and friendly group. But the menu has a lot of good options -- this is one of the few places I've found where you can get a fat hot dog with a number of different options for toppings! Horrible service! Went in for lunch & sat there for 30 minutes. They brought our drinks but never came back to take our order. The help was standing around not doing anything & the one female waitress acted like she was on crack. Got tired of waiting (no they weren't busy or under staffed). At the risk of making them busier and harder for patrons to find a seat, Bircher's has become our favorite date night dinner. The Cajun bite size is absolutely unbeatable! Mongolian beef is amazing, as well as anything we've tried there. The onion rings are great - my fave over fries (which are good too, especially with the fry sauce that packs a punch). You will not leave there hungry with their generous portions. The staff is very personable and responsive. As a bonus, it's much more affordable than other options we've tried. Not going to be so petty as to knock down their rating based on warming up leftovers, as another reviewer did. (No leftovers measure up to fresh do they?) read more

Im was really surprised to find an elevated dining experience in a diner-looking restaurant. You can still find burgers and sandwiches and all the standard diner fare, but I've never had teriyaki bite size steak and coconut shrimp at a diner before. It was so very nicely done, huge portions and the food came out quickly and served with a smile from the friendly server. I'd definitely return to try their breakfasts given that dinner was so delicious. read more

Bircher's is a gem of a restaurant tucked away on Lewiston's Main Street. They have delicious diner-style food with a creative twist. We love having weekend breakfast there where a mimosa arrives at our table shortly after we arrive (we're regulars and you'll see why). The staff is attentive, helpful, and prompt. Their portions are generous without being overwhelming. This morning (along with my mimosa) I had their breakfast special; two eggs, breakfast meat, and a waffle with blueberry topping. It was perfection. They have special way of cooking their waffles that gives them a crunch even after they've been absorbing that scrumptious blueberry compote. My husband's biscuits and gravy was brimming with big chunks of sausage (sorry, no pic). If you're looking for delicious food at a fair price with top notch customer service, stop into Birchers. I promise you won't be disappointed. Bonus: They deliver! One suggestion: On the breakfast menu, offer your choice of breakfast meat for customers who may not care for sausage. read more

Just moved here from Chicago. We tried nearly every restaurant in the LC valley and Birchers is easily the best. The food is very high quality and cheaper than most other places. We've been there twice and both times were served by the women with all the tats. She's awesome. She has a great memory and is really attentive even when the place is packed. Food was "meh" to say the least. Took a very long time for our order. The service was great. They should turn on their fans or get some air circulation going- it was stuffy and smoky. I was coughing a little bit and so was some other customers. We gave it a try because I had heard some great reviews but the food was pretty basic and not worth wait. My party came in late afternoon on a Saturday. It was a good five plus minutes before we were approached by any waitstaff. When the waitress did come to our table we ordered our drinks. We had some questions about the food which transitioned in to her documenting a partial food order even though we were not really ready to order food. Since there is no kids menu she offered a single slider with no side and then stood requesting remainder of order. After rushing to add the last item to our order the waitress asked if we wanted anything special on the chicken sandwich. We asked what all came on the chicken sandwich and she didn't actually know. She left to ask another staff what was on the chicken sandwich disappeared. During this time another waistaff approached to take our order and we explained that we had already ordered. Since the first waitress never returned the second waitress came back asking for our drink order then promptly returned with our drinks. The food arrived and the sliders in the cheese tower were good and the thin steak fries were delicious. The chicken sandwich was basically a big McChicken with tomato. During our trip most of the staff were working on preparation for what looked like a few large parties that were expected later that day with no concern for the customers currently in the restaurant. read more
