Cheese curds appetizer - fry sauce coming!
    Steve A.

Interesting how this place struck me. First impression: 5 stars. The server was fun, basically said everything on the menu was amazing but actually gave reasons why! When I made my order, she said it was great. OK... but it was. It's one of those Western places that is food to excess. They just stuff your plate with food. Even without the curds appetizer (a must for me), I probably should have ordered just the half dinner instead of full. There were THREE chicken-fried steaks on my plate. I got through two of them smothered in the country gravy, and had to call it quits, paired with some curds and fries. Absolutely loved the fries, they taste like fresh potato fried, which is exactly what I would expect in Idaho. Texas toast was fresh bread. Server brought me fry sauce (an Idaho tradition) on request and gave me a second dip for the road. That was first impression. But I saved some food for the next day and discovered the truth: It's really salty. The curds seemed a bit oily when fresh, and on day 2 (after refrigeration) they were caked together and are overbreaded. And after having had other curds on the same trip, that's not just a second impression, that's a fact - bread to curd ratio is off. Corn on the side wasn't listed with the dish but was canned, so I didn't eat one with dinner or the next day. The sawmill gravy is salty, and so is the breading on the steak (not the steak itself, fortunately). Even the fries surprised me how they went from tasting fresh to tasting salty over less than a day. Again, fortunately fry sauce isn't that salty, but I didn't have enough to drench the salt taste away. I'm a low-salt person, so part of this was my fault for diving in without testing the waters, and perhaps a bit blind out of hunger to what I was ingesting. But the health is a big minus on these and it affects the taste, so in the end I've gotta knock my rating down a bit unfortunately. This is true country dining in the West, so be careful and eat in moderation!

Breakfast was great! Huge portions and our server was very attentive. Highly recommend!

Food was pretty good! Service was terrible, very slow, she forgot to bring things we asked for. Never got refills on drinks. A hair found on fruit garnish that came on plate with meal. Fries were good, fry sauce like Red Robin.

Im was really surprised to find an elevated dining experience in a diner-looking restaurant. You can still find burgers and sandwiches and all the standard diner fare, but I've never had teriyaki bite size steak and coconut shrimp at a diner before. It was so very nicely done, huge portions and the food came out quickly and served with a smile from the friendly server. I'd definitely return to try their breakfasts given that dinner was so delicious.

    Breakfast special.

Bartender was fantastic, she was also the manager as I learned later, and her husband was the chef and daughter waited tables. I just ordered a couple appetizers and a beer, but the whole atmosphere and friendly people made the visit worth it. Food was great and served very quickly. Everyone checked on me regularly and good conversation was had by all. They allowed me to stay and continue watching the game (until it went into overtime) as they cleaned up for the evening getting ready to close. I must so, Lewiston is a dead town in the winter!!

They do seem to be perpetually short-handed, so the service always seems to be a bit slower than I'd prefer. Someone suggested to me it was the layout with the tall booths, but if they simply walked by the table a bit more, that would be helpful. I don't ask for a lot, but when my beer's been empty for some time, that's not enjoyable. I've found the best service can often be found in the bar area instead of the main dining room. The food is often good. I've not had a bad steak there, but it might take you a little while to get it. And if you come and the parking lot's full, if you don't have reservations, you're probably going to have a bit of a wait.

The restaurant had a quaint downtown feel with a welcome lack of pretension. And the food was 5-star level. We started with the chilled caprese which was light and delicious. The balsamic drizzle, one of my favorites, really added to the depth of flavor. My wife ordered the salmon which came with a phenomenal sauce. It was tangy and tasted of dill and really elevated an already flavor- packed meal. I had the Thai pasta dinner which was a fusion of Thai flavors with an Italian flair. It will be one of my new favorites with the Thai spices in the sauce covering spiral noodles. If you are looking for fancy food with a "friend next door" vibe. Brava's is for you.

Mystic Cafe (MC) is a not-so-hidden gem for great food in Lewiston…read more My wife and I were in town for a family event and found MC for breakfast. Let's start with the decor. The place is massive with all sorts of spots to get comfortable and check out the great art work. Then there is the service. We were greeted by the hostess, greeted by a waiter who walked by while we were waiting to be seated, greeted by our server and then thanked several times for coming on the way out the door. There are places that say they treat their customers like they matter and those that actually do it. MC is in the latter category. Then there is the food. I can't remember what my wife ordered but I will never forget what I ordered. I ordered one of my favorites, biscuits and gravy with an over easy egg. You can tell how good the cook staff is by how they cook the eggs and how fresh their gravy tastes. MC Is as an A+ on both counts. But, the one thing I will remember was the fried chicken. My server recommended it as an add in and boy was she right. It was some of the best fried chicken I have ever had. The batter was super crispy and not greasy. The chicken, even though it was breast meat, was flavorful and juicy. It added the finishing touches to an amazing morning meal. I cannot recommend Mystic Cafe enough. Whether you are a local or just passing through, Mystic Cafe has got to be in your list of must haves.
