We thought it would be awesome from all the prior reviews - however, I believe they have started using the "new" and popular oil that all the restaurants in our area are using and it just tastes awful. A treat. We went for brunch (pro tip: Sunday they are _jammed_ until about 12:30, then it empties out rapidly). Everything was good, some things were very good (the Hash Browns, and the bacon, were both cooked perfectly), and one thing was excellent: the breakfast burrito is outstanding, probably the best one we've ever had. Was really looking forward to eating breakfast here based on yelp reviews/pictures. Finally got the opportunity. Arrived there on a Saturday about 11. Rather busy. Sat at the bar stools. Lots of servers walking right by. Not a single acknowledgment we were there. Waited another 5 minutes when I got a phone call. Went outside to take the call which took at least another 5 minutes, as my boyfriend waited inside for a menu. While staying in Seattle for a month, we took a day trip to some of the islands. On the way, we needed breakfast and, based on diner ratings, chose Billy's. So glad we did! My wife's chicken fried steak was tender and tasty. The gravy was pretty much the run of the mill white milk gravy, but had a slight kick to it. Hash browns were crispy. I had the Farmer skillet and asked that they turn it into a scramble for me. They were happy to do this. It was delicious, with country fried potatoes, mushrooms, ham, bacon, sausage and veggies all scrambled in with my eggs and topped with a bit of that same ubiquitous white gravy. I asked for sourdough toast with it which came nicely crisp. The fruit jam served on the side seemed homemade and was wonderful. Service was excellent. I can't imagine a better place for breakfast. I would give it five stars except that I just don't do that for breakfast because it's not that creative - and if it were, I probably wouldn't like that. I really like this restaurant for breakfast. Had the steak skillet. It was great. Mom had the eggs Benedict. The hash browns are real potatoes that were hand shredded. Food coffee, we liked the sausage gravy and biscuits. Another at the table had their pancakes. I didn't care for. A little too thick and doughy for my taste. We will be back. Seeing as there is no good breakfast places in Bellingham we often drive to mr t"s in mount Vernon, we read a few reviews on yelp for billy"s so we thought we would give it a try, and it was pretty damn good, great friendly service and a very nice clean restaurant. Awesome little cafe for brunch/breakfast. The food was amazing and everything was really fresh. They use real eggs in their scrambles and use good cuts of bacon. The attention to the plates at this price was a welcome surprise. Definitely give them a try (Recommend Billy's platter, and all the scrambles.) read more

My (adult) daughter loves this place so I gave it a try with her. Retro, cozy, diner like vibe. Huge big screen TV for you Sunday 12'vers. Ordered the eggs bene. Was good...pretty standard, but I hated the hash browns. They were deep fried and tasted somewhere between potato chips/canned potato sticks. Couldn't eat them. I did ask for crispy, but hash browns are usually done on a grill and I like the outside crisp, inside soft. My niece didn't like hers either. Exactly like mine, and she didn't ask for crisp. So, neither of us ate them. The menu is good. Value is good. Service was good. Just nothing special...for me, anyway. read more

I just ordered 3 of the Reuben's with the clam chowder to go for me and a couple co-workers. Let me first say the place is very clean and the staff are very friendly. Open for only half a year, this place continues to get better and better as I return daily along times when in Skagit County. Deservedly so, this place is very popular, sometimes slammed. So what keeps people coming back and newcomers flowing in? Billy's Cafe, being family owned and operated, is an incredibly relaxed and welcoming environment - minus the relaxed part when they get busy and the staff goes into overdrive. Bill & his wife Angela & their son Billy, Chef Ron & his wife Mindy, Manny, Kevin, Juliana, Ally, and others are charming and genuine in their distinct characters that do not hide their clear, loving, family nature. Coming here often, one is graced with the opportunity to get to know the staff and regulars who can be quite humorous (an abundance of light give and take jokes), loving (one can sense how they care for their customers and co-workers), and devoted to serving others to the best of their ability. Food service is the core of the offering at Billy's Cafe. Chef Ron (co-owner), Bill (owner), and Manny (beloved third chef), put so much love into the food they prepare and serve; you can taste it. When times are busy the quality varies, but going early or later in the day, when things are not rushed, one willing finds the perfection of their craft delightful (I have never found it otherwise). No need to hesitate in placing a custom order, they are very accommodating and understanding. I recommend the Smothered Hash Browns, a special not found on the regular menu but that you can order any time (eggs over gravy smothered bacon bit hashbrowns). Their biscuits and gravy always leave me satisfied and stuffed (if you will - ask for it with mushrooms). Chef Ron's famous cinnamon roll pancakes are divine. The southwest steak skillet is full of classic American savory style. That is just breakfast! There is so much more? Of course - these folks love to serve an abundance of traditional - and - specialized breakfast and lunch offerings. Not a Seahawks follower? You can't help but be with the owners and many of the customers being die hard fans. If ladies will have a peek in the men's restroom (the only place Angela allows), there are a couple of blue and green twelfth man gems. This Christmas season one could follow the adventures of the restaurant mischief maker, Elfie, as he made his presence known (see their facebook page for pictures). And something that touched my soul in a very special way: the restaurant put on a raffle to support a young diabetic girl's grandmother raising $20,000 for a specialized dog that can sense changes in blood glucose levels and alert others. Food and service were great, restaurant was nice and clean. They are just a little pricey, but not real bad.

An update. Not much has changed including the food. The one thing that has changed is doing away with most of their servers. Once in a while you'll get apart time server. Usually it's Billy himself taking care of you, or a woman I assume is his wife. She's a real sweetheart, but she's a horrible server. Be patient if she's working, she'll get to you eventually. Best darn pancakes I've eaten this past year while traveling through ten countries. Service is a tad slow, but friendly.

I was taking a trip to Vancouver, B.C. and needed to stop for breakfast. I looked up restaurants close to my location and Billy's Cafe came up. I'm really glad I stopped there. The food was excellent and the service was top notch. I got The Farmer Skillet (without mushrooms and ham). It comes in an actual cast iron skillet. How cool is that! It was very tasty. Went in there and the food was fine but some lady came in with a black pug dog and walked into the kitchen area with the dog. The cook pet the dog which is entirely inappropriate and then did not wash his hands. That's disgusting. Will not be going back because of that. read more
