    Billy Kart Kitchen
    Jad A.

Well-known local celebrity chef, Ben O'Donoghue with his wife Dee, have converted the old "Clifton Hill Corner Store" in Annerley into a simple café, BillyKart kitchen. Offering well priced generous portions of food using fresh seasonal produce. Paying homage to the old corner store, they've kept the old roller doors, original signage, and locals can pick up the paper, milk, as well as fresh bread. The décor is a mixture of colour and sentimentality. There's splashes of yellow, and lime, pot plants inside, book shelves containing several personal items, and retro mags, rounding out a very homely feel. Along with serving Campos Coffee, there are also Danish pastries, sweets and specialty food items on offer. If you wander outside, you'll see their vegie and herb garden, fresh and ready for the picking. Recommend the Pulled Berkshire Pork shoulder sandwich with sugerloaf slaw and Baja sauce ($18.5), for a hearty delicious meal The Spanner crab spaghetti, with mussels and prawns ($24) has a kick of flavour from the chilli, pepper and garlic, settled by the freshness of the basil and tomato. Beautiful! Open 6 days a week for breakfast and lunch, BillyKart Kitchen is a popular hub with locals and those wanting to venture into other inner city 'burbs. Dinners are every Friday (fortnight), with a changing menu. Check their website for details. Although it's a space all the way out in the 'burbs, people are flocking to BillyKart kitchen because it serves great food, and has great service. Ben and his wife have created something special, and have set a standard for others to follow.

Finally. A new cafe has opened that is standing up and doing something different with their menus. Thank you! I was more impressed by Billy Kart than I have been by a cafe in a long time. As my day turned out, I ended up having breakfast and lunch here. From the time I arrived and popped up my laptop for some work calls to the time I left after having lunch with a friend, I was never once made feel unwelcome. I ordered their version of a bircher muesli with qunioa, apple, date, yoghurt and nuts for breakfast and with a flat white (Campos), it was the healthy and light kick-start I was craving. The Bircher was exceptionally flavoursome with roasted coconut on top. By the time lunch came around I was more than curious about the Open Sushi on the menu. Turns out it is more of a sushi board with fresh tuna, scallops, prawns, kingfish and salmon. Words cannot do justice to how this meal is presented with precision and delicacy. Again, a light and flavoursome meal. Hidden in surburbia, it's almost hard to believe such a wonderful cafe could exist, but here it is. Seriously, it's surrounded by residential houses where you might imagine children running through sprinklers in backyards on hot summer days, white picket fences and all that jazz. Yet, here is a bustling cafe which was steadily busy in my few hours there. There's plenty of inside and outside seating. Ben O'Donoghue, thank you!

Dropped in for lunch with my wife and daughter on Wednesday. The food as just Devine. I had the Billycart fish taco's with chipotle, pineapple, cucumber salsa. My wife had green papaya salad with BBQ pork belly, prawns and Vietnamese pancake. My daughter had the chilli spanner crab spaghetti. The chocolate brownie with salted caramel ice cream was simply epic! My only complaint is that we don't visit enough. Need to do something about that.

We decided to check this place out on Sunday for brunch. We arrived around 10am and the place was buzzing. It's a nice hipster cafe with their own garden in the back. Fresh flowers for sale and adorable little cakes, cookies, and other sweets on display on the counter as you walk in the door. (Could use a fly cover for the baked goods though) My husband had the bircher muesli and it was AMAZING. Fresh, light, and so tasty. Great portion size and yet still a great breakfast to leave you feeling light afterwards. I had the Aussie Asian breakfast. It is a very unique dish. It had great flavours and generous amounts of prawns and bacon. I have to say though that I don't think I would order this dish again. The noodles are deep fried, the eggs are deep fried, the bacon is greasy, which left the whole dish being quite oily and heavy. Also texture wise, the noodles were hard (raw noodle texture) the bacon was hard, making it quite a difficult dish to cut/eat. The sauce that accompanies it is also very sweet. The flavours were great at first but by the time I was about half way through the dish it started to become sickly sweet, even with the sliced chillies. I think this dish has a lot of potential with a little tweaking, but as is I left feeling kinda gross. I definitely think we will be back to try something else. Coffee was great (campos) and service was friendly and attentive. Overall a good experience.

I was doing research for my quest to find Brisbane's Best Bircher muesli when I came upon Lani's review for the version at Billy Kart Kitchen. A quick peek at their website told me that it was still on their menu so I made plans with a friend to visit on a weekday morning. Having heard about it (all good) but never been, I was a little excited to check it out. Unfamiliar with the south side, I had no idea where to go but luckily my breakfasting companion did. Located in a quiet street in Annerley, not far from busy Ipswich Rd, Billy Kart Kitchen is housed in an old corner store and is owned and run by celebrity chef Ben O'Donoghue and his wife Dee. To be honest, the 'celebrity chef' thing made me avoid the cafe rather than have me running towards it but consistently good reviews made me reconsider my initial reaction. The cafe is quite large with both outdoor and indoor seating. It was a particularly chilly morning, which I was wholly unprepared for, so we opted to sit inside near a window. The cafe was almost empty but it was a weekday and soon after opening - I hear weekends are an entirely different matter. We were served immediately with water and menus and after a quick glance at the drinks menu, I ordered my standard long black with milk on the side and my friend ordered a latte. As I was on a hunt for Bircher, I didn't look long at the menu (partially so I didn't get tempted by anything else) and after all of my Bircher talk, my friend opted for the same. Coffees were delivered shortly after ordering and my long black (Campos beans) was good - perhaps not as rich as I generally like best but had good flavour and wasn't bitter. There wasn't much of a wait for our meals either (but they weren't many other customers) and looked amazing. After snapping a million photos, I finally dug in and discovered that it tasted even better than it looked. The muesli was a thick mix of oats and quinoa soaked in apple juice, which gave it a strong apple flavour. The quinoa wasn't hugely obvious but I suspect it added to the texture as it wasn't mushy and had a perfect consistency. I was delighted to find large chunks of apple mixed throughout which had been cooked just enough to be soft but still with some bite. Large pieces of dates, sultanas and some seeds were also mixed throughout. A creamy runny yoghurt topped the muesli and made it deliciously creamy and freshly grated green apple covered it which added a nice tart contrast to the sweet muesli and just added to the apple flavour. Finally, the dish was covered in a generous amount of honey roasted coconut, hazelnuts and pecans which were so moreish I could have eaten it alone and added delicious crunch to every mouthful. Definitely a contender for 'Brisbane's Best Bircher'! Service was excellent and friendly and when I asked for specifics about the Bircher ingredients, our waiter even went back to the kitchen to confirm some details. We were accidentally overcharged and when I contacted them to ask about it, I received an immediate response and apology and request for details to refund. Fantastic. This cafe is clearly already popular and the owners are opening a new venue in West End, which I am absolutely keen to to try. I'd also love to go back to try more on both the breakfast and lunch menus and their monthly-changing dinner menu looks great too. When paying at the counter, I reached over the delicious looking muffins to grab a business card and could tell they were still warm so I assume that they are all baked freshly in-house. Pastries are also available for a quick grab-and-go breakfast or morning tea. I'll recommend this suburban gem to everyone and need to plan a return visit ASAP!

Omg! How I love thee! Best breakfast/s! Everything is made fresh on site - you HAVE to try the homemade crumpets with honeycomb butter. Desserts and pastries fresh made on the counter. Fantastic coffee. Monthly theme inspired dinners on Friday. This is definitely going on the regular!

Love the space. Deceptively small on the outside, veritable cavern inside. They have footpath dining as well under awning. Lovely menu. Fresh juice. Only issue we had was waiting. The sign asks for you to wait to be seated and unfortunately it seems they have a strong culture of each person doing only their signed role. We had two counter/barista staff within 2 metres of us but both pointedly avoided meeting our eyes. The floor staff were busy assembling a long table. When I asked if we could just sit somewhere after about 3 minutes we were told to wait for a staff member. This is just so horribly awkward. No customer should ever feel invisible at a doorway. There are cafes that acknowledge they have specific rules but still reassure the customer. A simple hello or we'll get to you as soon as we can gets the message across without making any promises.

The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

I've been wanting to try Bunker for the longest time, and today was the day. I love the vine covered hub, which reminds me of a burrow, and of a cafe that I used to visit back in L.A. Instead of getting my usual latte, I went for the bottled ice dark chocolate (5). I'm not the biggest fan of hot chocolate, as it's usually too sweet and heavy for me to finish (I know, strange, because I can finish a whole Chipotle burrito), but I decided that the unusually warm weather called for an iced chocolate. We were greeted by a really friendly barista who helped us right away - and well - the iced dark chocolate and dark chocolate mocha were pre-bottled, so there wasn't much work. The iced dark chocolate, made with organic milk (I think?) and fair trade chocolate, was quickly consumed! It wasn't too sweet, and I would definitely go for it again. The iced dark mocha was also really good, and not at all grainy, which often happens in a lot of mochas. My only complaint was that the bottles were a bit harder to open (I prefer Bean's bottles), and the straws were too short and kept falling in! The drinks were so delicious it didin't matter though....
