What a find! Cannot believe it has taken so long to find…read moreit. This place is great - it has changed hands since the last review and some changes made, still praiseworthy. The family love this place including our dog. It is on Ekibin Road - there is parking out front but best to use s side street. Walk up - do the COVID check in - find a table inside or out in the backyard garden ( our preference as we take the dog) There is a dog playground at the back next to the table - most dog friendly cafe I have seen. But let's get down to what's important- coffee & food - both good. The long blacks more than passed muster and given an excellent score by the other half. The capppuccino on almond always hits the spot. Coffee is excellent. Food is also excellent - the snag varieties vary day to day so check for favorites. Good selection of vegan and GF options. Top marks!

Adding another gem to Annerley/Moorooka/Tarragindi surburban cafe landscape this place is well on it's way to becoming a brunch/breakfast favourite. We visited Subsay morning 10ish - while we had no reservation (and it happened to be Father's Day - oops) we were still seated & served quickly. Menu features many bfast faves with some twists thrown in such Banana Bread French Toast the husband ordered along with specials like the Moroccan eggs that I had. Many gluten free & vege friendly options available. Carnivores fear not maple bacon & homemade sausage varieties abound. Coffee orders were taken promptly and delivered swiftly. Bare Bones coffee FTW. We didn't try the juices or smoothie options but they did sound good. Service was great considering the business of the day. My hashbrown side order did get slightly forgotten at first - which I'm attributing to simple new staff error - but soon appeared once brought to their attention. They are open for lunch & dinners (not totally sure which mights) and wine list we are keen to go back and try that out soon.

I've made a few trips to Penny, some just for coffee (takeaway and sit down) and a few with food…read more Across the board, Penny is outstanding in terms of Brisbane's cafe scene. The baristas are exceptionally skilled, and there is a selection of roasts to choose from. While I normally like my coffee black, something that isn't too hard to make, I've had a few flat whites from Penny which have been excellent. A friend of mine asked if they're able to pull a piccolo using soy milk, without the milk splitting. Despite indicating that the barista don't need to try if they haven't made one before, they produced one (after two failed attempts) by slowly adjusting the extraction to the point where they could add a shot to soy milk without producing soy cheese. Doing this despite explicitly not needing to is the sort of above and beyond that earns long-term customers. The food is similarly stellar. The avo on sourdough may at first blush seem like a pricier version of what everyone else is doing. The flavours in Penny's version are, however, inventive and balanced to a point I haven't had elsewhere. There's a nice balance between the feta, dukkah and pomegranate where you can taste all of them without one overpowering the other. The vegetabowl is similarly great. There's just enough of each ingredient that you can taste them, without the dish being overpowered by one note. Penny's interior makes maximal use of the space. There are comfortably sized tables out front and inside, and some bar seating by the espresso machine. The best seats in the house, though, are out back, and include a few longer tables. The staff at Penny are attentive, friendly and great at pulling a coffee and making food.

Hidden Gem How did I not find this place earlier?…read moreOnce you find it you'll remember the charm. This is a gorgeous vintage feel cafe that has ample seating and space. There is on street parking. It's opposite a cute little kids playground. Walk up and either put in the order or find a table - there is table service - quick, friendly and efficient. The menu has some old favs like crumpets with passion fruit butter and the usual eggs and toast - both are great. Breakfast Burger is a very tasty meal. The coffee is good. This place is now one of my favorites - love the general store charm. Ohh! It's also dog friendly ( sitting outside) - they serve a puppycino - paw stamp of approval from outer chocolate lab.

We were seated in the back where I got a clear view of the entire restaurant. The place is buzzing! We started off with some coffee, because that's what you do when in Australia. The coffee culture is HUGE here. After everyone arrived, we got down to business. We ordered: Crispy Corn Fritters: absolutely delicious! Crispy corn fritters soft on the inside are served with perfectly scrambled eggs. Not on the menu Breakfast Sandwich: this was for the kids who couldn't find anything on the menu they liked. Essentially a bacon and egg sandwich (on a burger bun). Smoked Pork Hock Hash: my least favorite dish is smoked pork hock potato cake dotted with green harissa, avocado, kefir tahini, and finished with two poached eggs. It wasn't bad, just kinda boring when compared to the rest of the stuff. Eggs Bender: Billykart's version of eggs Benedict. Two poached eggs and a respectable Hollandaise sauce paired with house smoked Ora King salmon, and a side of sauteed mustard greens. No traditional English muffin here, instead a thick slice of rustic sourdough bread substitutes. Aussie Asian Eggs: my favorite dish. Also, possibly the most creative. A cake of fried noodles is topped with grilled prawns and bacon plus two deep fried eggs over the top. Food is good, really good. If you're in the area, definitely stop by.

All of this adds to the original character of historic building & makes one feel such at home. Open daily for breakfast & lunch, Gertrude and Mabel's menu is simple, short, but beautiful & inspired by the owner's Greek heritage. Gertrude and Mabel make everything they offer, its all about home made, sourcing fresh local ingredients & products, including honey from Grandad's beehives & herbs from his garden. The menu is a perfect example doing a few things & doing them brilliantly. Today we caught up with a friend, & ordered: (1) The breakfast board with Loukaniko (pork sausage), 8 minute egg, fasolatha (beans), avocado, blistered tomato & home made hollandaise. ($19) (2) Loukaniko (Pork Sausage), smashed peas, goats cheese on Ciabatta with Lemon Mayo & 8 minute egg. ($16) Both dishes were incredible, & cooked perfectly. They were both so fresh & had alot of flavour. The coffee & in house treats are absolutely delicious! The Coffee was nice, smooth & not bitter. This is definitely a place you must visit! You will love the laid back atmosphere, great service, & you will feel as though you are visiting a good friend's house.

Yes I've been there twice now. Two weekends in a row around 8am. Both with friends and all trying something different from the menu. Everyone had only positive things to say, except maybe the portions were large and they shouldn't have eaten it all. If you're going for breakfast they are not going to have your typical breakfast foods. But who doesn't love a lunch style menu for breakfast. Regardless, you'll have trouble deciding what to have. It's an eclectic menu and if you prefer something on the lighter side there is a bakery onsite as well. I was told the chef likes to play around when I asked about a particular biscuit/cookie. Think red velvet biscuit with marshmallow inside. The staff are very friendly and helpful giving recommendations with regard to what might satisfy your craving when you've narrowed your decision down to two. For my part there were a lot of meals with eggs which I'm very fussy about so typically just don't choose it (makes sense ). But there were a couple I just really want to try next time and was told some accommodation could be made. Having said that the ingredients in each meal are so well thought out I would really not want to change things up. Unless it was to maybe ask for the egg on the side. Will I be back. Yes definitely, even if just for a coffee and pastry. I will try to not be so excited to eat and even take some photos.

We didn't booked, because it was a rainy Saturday, surely, most people are still in their cosy warm beds. We put our name on the wait-list when we arrived. It wasn't too long before we were shown to a table. Tick! We promptly placed our orders and sat back to chat, enjoying the buzz in the space. Interiors was clean, simple and homely. We liked that. Front of house was staffed by a young team. Most of the staff was friendly enough, but looked to be under the pump and it showed on their faces. However, a couple of the girls looked disinterested and lacked a smile, which is very important in a customer service-oriented industry. My girlfriend ordered a coffee and it arrived in a timely manner. We thought, this is a good sign, perhaps the food would soon follow, as they seemed to be an efficient team. Two tables arrived, we peeked and saw that they ordered similar dishes to ours. We got excited, thinking we would be next. Nope! 40 minutes passed with one waiter reassuring us that our food is only, but minutes away. We accepted their response and continued to wait patiently. Our food finally arrived after we enquired about it again. With a rushed apology, she set down our food and vanished. We enjoyed the food, it was very well presented and was super tasty. When we finished, our plates was immediately cleared away and we were asked if we wanted more coffees. All this happened while we were in deep conversation. After refusing further coffees, we were handed the bill without asking for it. This is a very rude thing to do, as the establishment is implying that we need to move on. As a person with a massive hospitality background, this is a big no-no in the industry. It is rude and leaves a sour taste in the customer's mouth despite the beautiful food. I cannot recommend this space, as they need to life their game with it comes to customer service. Food wise, not much to fault from my one meal. I later found out that my girlfriend frequent this place often and every time her servings have been bigger for the same dish.
