The prices are fair for what you get, so thumbs up there. Food aside, what. Is inviting about this place is its appearance. No, I'm not that shallow, but it is a great selling point. It's located on a busy corner, offers indoor and outdoor seating for groups and lone rangers, displays the large range of colourful foods along the counter and has a wall-full of quirky art. Reason enough to dine in I say! The only downside for me today was the hot chocolate. Looked more like a glass of milk and the chocolate flavoured syrup they used was meh and all at the bottom. Spoon deli has a great combination of being trendy, welcoming and sleek all at the same time. A little bit like an Apple Mac amongst all windows laptops. On the downside the service is slooow, but food is worth the wait. I tend to come here for a quick dose of "no, I am not in CBD" feeling My last order was salmon and scrambled eggs bagel - sensational (I usually dislike scrumbled eggs but this bagel was filled with lightest and fluffiest scrambled eggs ever and then there was just a hint of lemon both in taste and scent) I will have it again! read more

When I first moved to Brisbane, Spoon Deli's James Street cafe was the place I was most recommended to visit. At the time I didn't know better and dutifully considered it my local for a time. Now as a seasoned Brisbane-ite I rarely go to any of the Spoon Delis but I do on occasion stop into the Festival Towers cafe for a naughty take-away coffee. Spoon have always done breakfast well (standard eggs, bacon etc) and this incarnation of the chain is no different. When I've visited the Festival Towers Spoon Deli I've never been disappointed but I've never been over-the-moon delighted either. Still, if you're in the CBD and craving a decent coffee or fresh food it is one of your best options in that part of town. read more

I've wandered in and out of Spoon loads of times in search of lunchtime inspiration and had always kept walking. This week I finally stopped in for a morning coffee. I ordered inside as I hadn't noticed the hole in the wall for takeaway orders and was greeted by friendly service and a smile. I ordered my Zymil flat white (lactose free at no extra charge) and grabbed a Ginger Kombucha from the fridge for later in the day. I dutifully waited outside for my takeaway but it took so long I started to wonder if my coffee was sitting inside for me and I hadn't heard them call my name. But I eventually got my cup of Joe and headed off to work. The coffee was nice, nothing spectacular but a decent option and I'd like to give their breakfasts a go next time. read more

With two hours of free and relatively fast internet along with gracious opening hours (it's saved my hide on more than one public holiday) it would be tough to find a better place that could please everyone. And I do mean everyone - from school kids to grannies to professionals, it was like a revolving door of interesting characters to snoop, I mean, people watch. What I love the most about Spoon is it's not trying to be anything it's not. They're a small chain taking up a big, open space that's part cafe, part deli and part larder-filler. There's nothing edgy or new about it, it's just comfortable, familiar food in a relaxed environment. My mate took me to Spoon Deli Espresso on a Saturday morning after a big night out and it was great - I loved it! Being a first timer to Brissie, there was a small discussion the night before about which place would be cool enough to go to so as to make the most out of my long weekend and they all agreed hands down and recommended Spoon Deli on Albert St. Located on the GF of the Festival Towers at the CNR of Albert & Charlotte, this place will suit those who are simply after brekkie or those after a coffee on their way to the CBD for a bit of whatever. I can but envy those residing in the Festival Towers to have such a cool place at their doorstep! Spoon's menu is quite comprehensive and offers a bit of everything such as: Fruit & Yoghurt, Pancakes & Waffles, Bagels, Croissants, Salmon & Eggs and Toast. They also serve lunch with sandwiches, ciabattas and wraps on offer. We had the smoked salmon with eggs ad avocado on toast which was quite nice. I would normally get a Flat White but he insisted that I try their Vietnamese coffee - actually not bad but I think I'll stick with my FW next time. It took much longer than anticipated to get our order despite there not being much of a crowd, and if my partner hadn't paid attention, he would have been given the wrong food. I have a friend who lives in Festival Towers and this is the place we frequent for breakfast when we can't be bothered toasting our own toast. Why would you, when there's Spoon Deli Espresso by your feet... My favourites according to my mood (for sweet or savoury breakfasts) - Waffles With Bacon, Banana & Honey (OH, HANDS DOWN!- So good): The waffle is not soggy. It is crunchy and crispy on the outside, chewy and doughy in the inside. With a side of crispy bacon, I feel as though I'll have a heart attack soon, but I don't care, this is a seriously good sweet (with a side of savoury) type breaky option at Spoon Deli. Cost: A reasonable $12.50. - Smoked Salmon, Eggs & Avacado On Toast: This is not the heartiest of breakfast foods, but it definitely hits the spot when you're a fan of smoke salmon. With the fresh avocado, it balances and compliments the Salmon so nicely. Cost: A slightly pricier $14.90. - Any of their Bagels, French Toast or Croissants for a simpler bite to eat. Usually don't walk past these guys on my way to work, but when I do I always get a takeaway coffee. They are quick, friendly and engaging with their service. Don't much around and acknowledge you as soon as you appear at the counter. Coffee is just right for me, warm-hot so I can sip it as I walk without worrying about needing to launch legal action for burning my lip. It's location right next to Festival Towers means it is typically patronised by lots of business types and tourists, which discourages me from sitting down. read more

Long story short, I ordered the waffles (for $16) and got terrible, dry, store-bought frozen waffles. Waffles are incredibly simple to make, I cannot even fathom why any restaurant would serve frozen waffles in the first place. Even some hotels provide batter and waffle irons for guests to make their own waffles. If that were not enough, these waffles were awful. I can't remember if I've ever purchased frozen waffles at home that were this dry, crumbly, and bland. Quite frankly, I would be ashamed as a restaurant owner to serve something like that to my guests. Purchase a waffle iron and make some real waffles, it's not that difficult. The first time I ate at Spoon in the city I was pleasantly surprised. I'd seen the café on my wanderings around the city, but it looked like nothing more than a boring branch of a café chain. I met my friend for breakfast and flicked through their extensive menu; pretty much anything you could crave for your first meal of the day was featured here: from pancakes with ice cream, to croissants, to bagels, to French toast...the list goes on! Despite my initial instincts, I opted for a healthier meal: avocado toast ($7.70) with add ons of mushrooms ($3.50) and bacon ($4). The food was delicious, but the only downside was that it took forever to come out. It was packed the morning we went (I mean packed; I even saw Sarah Blasko eating there that morning because she was touring in Brisbane at the time) and we waited more than half an hour for our food to arrive. But it did give me enough time to spy on what other diners had ordered. The woman on the table beside us had gone for the chunky Fruit Salad w/ yoghurt, almonds & honey ($7.50) and it looked incredible. If you're going for lunch, I'd recommend ordering off the menu as opposed to choosing a wrap or pre-cooked meal from the fridge by the counter; they generally taste better and that way you'll be assured that your food is fresh.
