Shady Palms is the little Big Sister to Lady Marmalade. I say Big Sister because although this is the second venue for the owners of Lady M just up the road, Shady Palms packs some serious sass and with her floor space - is bound to be a roaring venue as she settles in to Stones Corner Life. We popped by on a Friday afternoon for a late lunch and having only officially opened 2 days before, there were some understandable glitches. There's a Salted Caramel Milkshake on the menu but their ice-cream and freezer is up and running yet so I was promptly refunded the money. They were so darling about it! The menu is fairly casual and you'll notice a lot of similar flavours if you've dined at Lady Marmalade. I couldn't resist the chicken and coleslaw slider ($6.50) and the Po'Boy slider ($6.50). While both were exceptional on their house made brioche mini buns, the chicken and coleslaw was the winner for me. Shady Palms coleslaw is something else and the perfect partner for a Friday afternoon cider. You know the feeling you have when something is just on the money and with time it is going to only get better? I have this feeling for Shady Palms. I can't wait to go back and each time see it have taken bounds ahead.

It's finally happened. I'm officially over the Brisbane-American-food-trend. Unless there's something completely mind-blowing and an incredible stand-out must-do experience I don't want to eat it. This is what brought my work colleagues and I back to Shady Palms Cafe and Bar. We have lunched here before and really enjoyed their rustic loose take on Mexican food but the parking situation can make it a tough choice for our precious one hour break. We ventured there this afternoon in a group of four and were happy to find they are keeping up their high standard of fare. I ordered the fried polenta with blue cheese sauce as a starter and the pineapple and shrimp tacos all identified as gf on the menu, HALLELUJAH!!! My colleagues went with the quesadilla and two pork belly burgers respectively. Everyone was super impressed with their food and the delicious sauces that accompanied everything. The polenta was crispy and very tasty with the blue cheese sauce. I would have liked them to be a little less thickly cut so the crunch would be more obvious. The tacos were a stand-out, the home made taco itself was flexible and tasted amazing with the thin swipe of herby pesto. I didn't taste any pineapple, but the cabbage slaw complimented the fried shrimp and slight tang of lime and chilli. These were mild so I didn't feel my mouth turn to fire (good news as I'm a wuss when it comes to spice). The service is what let us down today and prevented Shady Palms from getting 5 stars. When we stood up to order at the order window it was like we were all invisible.. until one staff member came back in from outside and served us. Even she commented that her colleagues had been "ignoring us". We weren't offered any water bottles or glasses and the meals came out very staggered (mine took at least 10 minutes longer than everyone elses). I can let this mostly slide, as the food was imaginative and always consistently well prepared and the ambience was perfectly cosy while still being interesting to the eye. I hope this becomes a regular fixture in our lunch-time outings.

Having heard good things, the girl and I ventured down to Shady Palms for Breakfast. It's like a café from Byron bay dropped out of the sky and settled into Stones Corner. Dreadlocked Baristas, mismatched chairs and benches, and a really laid back atmosphere. The menu is amazingly varied, and not your expected faire. With breakfast tacos sitting alongside Spiced Pumpkin & ricotta pancakes with peach fairy floss. Good coffees and really lovely wait staff. The space isn't heated, so it can get chilly, but there's granny blankets available, all pretty funky. Your table 'number' is a person from history, or hilariously, a ridiculous internet meme. "Cappuccino for Grumpy Cat" We'll be back, probably to try the sliders at lunch.

Afternoon watching the sunset with a jug of pimms is surely the best way to enjoy shady palms!

Great atmosphere and excellent bar staff! I love their cocktail jugs, a great way to relax on a Sunday afternoon with a group of friends. The outdoor area is beautiful in the afternoons with the usual live music they have going. Super friendly for larger groups too. I'm Yet to try out their food though!

Jam-packed with people of all ages from all the countries the beautiful world has to offer. Only catch is, you can only get in if you're a traveller or student (ID/Passport required) and if you're a girl. Although we have snuck the odd guy in with a bunch of girls with much success. It helps if you know the bouncer. They play music with the likes of Love Shack, Horny, Addicted to Bass and a lot of songs popular all over the world with the kids in the 90s era. They do go back to Dancing Queen and Mr Wendal as well and boy can you boogy to the tunes of this place. Be prepared to have some form of alcohol spilt on your fancy clothes every time you go there. Be prepared for people dancing on tables (even though they've banned it). Be prepared to body squish your way from the dance floor to the toilets and then back to the dancefloor with very willing body squichers - usually from Braz-eeeel (Brazil) and write a note on the wall to your ex-lover in the toilets and pretty much throughout the whole bar, on the walls, on the furniture... everywhere. Leave your memory here for free. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts, yes it's not posh, it's rather backpackery... but that's how we would like it to stay. Join in the songs with your hearts and hands and sing and dance to the wee hours to an awesome DJ with various glow in the dark articles through his hair. People have fun here, and that's what being young and travelling the world is supposed to feel like. Footloose and fancy free.

But the layout of the place is even better! It is a basement bar, half of it outside and the other half kind-of-inside. Very spacious, clean and with good selection of beer (albeit mostly mainstream beers, but a lot of them). Very comfortable, with some big TVs and also music. Good people watching too. The food is good, not amazing, but you can't expect amazing in such a central, tourist-y area. I had the wings and they're a solid 8/10, at least. Service was great too. Shout out to Elise behind the bar.

However, like most of the pubs in the CBD, this one does close quite early (though late enough that I was able to slip in here for a drink one night). There is nothing fancy or flash about this pub - expect the standard beers on tap - no craft beers. It also has a pokies area and a bistro, though there is a pool table tucked away in one corner. The beer garden is pretty cool as well, but unfortunately for the smokers it is not the designated smoking area. During the day it does get fairly crowded (though I have never noticed anybody out in the beer garden, despite it being a pretty nice day), but it was fairly quiet when I was there.

But sometimes it's good to get reckless and a bit silly over some beers and some really, really terrible love music. Irish Murphy's doesn't necessarily have bad music (I'm also a sucker for an accent, especially Irish) but they certainly have the collective crowd keen on getting drunk and roaring along to an inaudible and stereotypically perfect karaoke song. Maybe it's the fact that Irish Murphy's adopts an appearance actually like an Irish pub, but I can't help but have a little fondness for it. I have to search for the fondness a little but believe me, it's there. It's just an ideal place to gather around a table and sling back a few casual (or not so casual) beers and get a little messy and fun. And when you've had a few, who can't join in with the crooning and tuning of the blokes on stage? The beer's fairly cheap, the company's not half bad, and the entertainment isn't sot stale either. I'm not trying to sound begrudging here, because like I said, I do have a soft spot for Irish Murphy's. I just like to be with a larger group of people and get a little silly in the name of fun. If you're after slurry banter and Irish accents, Irish Murphy's is the place to be.
