I tried this place because my husband was wanting bbq. I had a bad feeling when we pulled up and I couldn't smell smoke. I had an even worse feeling when I went inside and still didn't smell smoke. We walked up and had our order taken. The guy taking the orders was very helpful and efficient. We got our drinks, then sat down and waited for our food. Our sandwiches were okay. Not bad, not terrible, but also nothing to write home about. There wasn't a distinct smoky flavor. Their bbq sauce was good. I just felt like I've gotten better bbq from some gas stations. I also wasn't a fan of their crinkle cut fries and basic sides. I don't think this place is terrible. I just don't think it's a good representation of what bbq should be. read more

A friend recommended this place and I am so glad she did! I went for lunch and ordered the chicken bite basket with fried okra and a salad. Their HOMEMADE ranch was absolutely incredible. Everyone was so kind but I wish I got the woman's name who was working the register because she was so helpful not to mention patient. She mentioned the restaurant was family owned and I am a sucker for local & family owned so that was really nice to know! Unfortunately it was not good. If you go into a bbq restaurant and it doesn't smell like bbq at all ... well that shoulda been a sign!! I ordered the 2 meat combo that's on their menu only to be told that's a typo they do not really have that meal. You can order a regular meal and add an additional meat which of course is more expensive than the 2 meat combo on their menu. I ordered a chopped brisket dinner and added an additional meat which was Turkey. Meal came with 3 sides so I went with tater tots, green beans & pinto beans. Chopped brisket was just ok... Turkey tasted like it came from the deli counter at Walmart with some bbq sauce squirted on it. Tater tots were good. Green beans tasted like straight out of a generic can. Pinto beans nothing spectacular. Texas toast was burnt & cold. My husband ordered pulled pork sandwich with side of baked beans. Said pulled pork was ok. OK, so we have heard good things about this place and off we went, family of seven. This included a great grandmother and our four children, children ranging from less than one year to seven year old twins. We wanted the catfish dinner and ordered three adult portions and one kid catfish dinner. Interestingly enough, the kid's fish and fries were the exact same size as the adult dinners, just with a single side instead of three. I have eaten catfish all over the United States and consider myself something of a catfish connoisseur if there were such a thing. This catfish, ranked among the worst I have ever had. It was not cooked properly. It wasn't raw, but the outside was almost like a skin, tough, and there really wasn't any breading to speak of. It was horrible. Catfish should be well breaded and cooked a rich yellow-brown color---not the lifeless yellowish color of this entree. The catfish dinner was on the menu at a bit over 10 bucks. This came with ONE thin filet, no more. It came with three sides, all of which were acceptable, although the fries were quite skimpy. I feel sure the restaurant management is weakly attempting to compensate for one thin filet of fish with the three sides. That's the biggest part of my negative review---the absolute awfulness of that catfish dinner. L O L, but wait, there's more! The cashier who took our order was polite, but decidedly not friendly. None of the staff smiled or chatted with us. All marginally polite but nothing like the atmosphere I would expect in a family owned restaurant Our cashier/order taker failed to provide a dessert we ordered and also failed to provide us drink cups for our large family. We seated ourselves with three cups and had to go back up to the counter to get enough cups. No one checked on our table other than the overworked server who checked as she served. No one ever came back after the meal was served to verify all was well. No one said thanks for coming, or asked if it were an acceptable meal. No one asked us to hurry back. No management was in evidence. I just saw a bunch of tired people slogging through the motions of running a restaurant with absolutely no enthusiasm. Yet, the place was fairly packed. I have no idea why lol. As for me and mine, we will NEVER return and will openly and volubly shun this establishment. The desserts were good. I would guess they are store bought or a different cook made them. Based off my experience, I can't see this establishment lasting more than another year or two. Billy Boys Bar-B-Que is like walking into Cheers from the vantage point that you will know someone in the restaurant even if you have been away from Shawnee for more than 10 years. The food at Billy Boys is predictable. My family relies on a few staples. The boneless chicken bites are moist, small, and tender. The meal cones with crinkle fries and a side of toast. These little chicken bites are great with honey. I have eaten Billy Boys beans since my college days. They are just good ole pinto beans. PREDICTABLY good. My spouse gets the sliced brisket. He must think it's edible because he has been ordering this sandwich for me than 20 years. I like Billy Boys tots better than fries. There are tv's on the wall and a large banquet room for events like 80th bdays or graduation parties. This may seem strange, but Billy Boys has some good water with some crunchy ice. I had the three meat combo with beans, green beans, and slaw. The thinly sliced lean beef had a dainty smoke ring, wasn't juicy, and came with sauce on top. Nothing special here. Our family has been coming to this Shawnee family run restaurant for years. I was running errands in the area & decided I would order the grilled chicken sandwich with cheese. Although it was very tasty, it was very messy. The only downside to my meal was the server initially brought me only 1 napkin upon bringing me my meal. This problem was quickly remedied when I asked for more napkins. The tots are really good here & I prefer them to the fries but that was just my preference on this particular visit. I decided to try the strawberry cupcake while I was dining in. It was surprisingly very moist & I would order it again. This place used to have the best BBQ around. We had stopped going there because we felt the quality was going downhill. In fact I'd stopped ordering okra because it was tough. Well, we ate there tonite and we both had the rib basket with fried okra. Guess what... the okra was tough. So tough I couldn't even eat it. The ribs were just ok. And the Texas toast was blah! Went with the daily lunch special for Thursday; Catfish Basket 7.99 The catfish itself was cooked well and did not have any major problems. The tartar dipping sauce was old... I could visibly see the old dried sauce on outside of the container; sauce was prepared over a week ago. The sauce had a bitter/sour rotten taste. The french fries where pretty bad. Some of the fries were uncooked mushy while others were extra cooked with a burn taste. I almost went with the actually BBQ like ribs or brisket but decided the $7.99 lunch special was what I wanted. Great food they keep it clean inside an out. I always get the big bbq ham sandwich an the crinkle cut fries. The bbq is good as well ribs are tender an tasty, I prefer a more of a smokey flavor in my bbq. I smoke my own ribs, brisket an pork butts I use nothing but good seasoned pecan so I'm a BBQ snob. My wife loves the boneless chicken bites and they are pretty awesome. Reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is; never get enough napkins there's none on the table, none on the soft drink an tea counter, seems you always have to ask the server for napkins. SO GOOD! I had the brisket sandwich with a sliced hot link on the side. The brisket was so tender and hot, and the sauce just added even more flavor.
