The wood beams, fireplace, the dark corner.... it was all so delightfully British (I was visiting from across the pond for a wedding). The bartender was very friendly and from my side of the pond. He was happy to chat about his recent experiences live in England, and then another bartender and patrons began chatting to me. The atmosphere was just so positive, like a breathe of fresh air! I did not order any food (hence the 4 stars), but saw some delicious looking and smelling cheeseburger arrive at a nearby table. The entire pub and restroom was so clean; it was very obvious that the employees take pride in working at this establishment and people enjoy coming here. Overall, it was a lovely experience and I would go back if I find myself in Farnham in the future :)

However, as far as I can remember from last summer when I was here, they don't have outside seating with a view of the castle. The building is very old, and has a very cosy, even romantic atmosphere. There is a fireplace, wooden beams everywhere and the typical old style windows. This pub is actually also a proper restaurant. Many other pubs serve 'pub food', but the Nelson Arms serves quality food. Additionally, orders are taken at your table (in most pubs one has to order drinks and food at the counter). Prices are (as can be expected) higher than pubs that sell pub food, but at the same time value for what you get. The only reason it isn't 5 star is because the place seemed understaffed. And the serving staff had no time to come to our table to 'check if we needed something more to drink', as they were constantly serving at the bar, or serving other tables. Also after we finished eating the plates were never taken away. We left 30 minutes after finishing our food.

I have gotten used to the ubiquitous English gastro pub and at first though (when seeing the exterior) that it was one of those. Though at heart is a gastro-pub, but the food was quite delicious, and the staff were very attentive. I had the chicken & chorizo pie with mash and a bare sprinkling of greens (I think it was cabbage, wasn't quite sure). The pie was quite scrumptious, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was a whole pie (top & bottom) and not the bog standard - pie dish with a flaky pastry topping. Husband had one of the specials - a mackerel salad, which he quite enjoyed as well. We both had a dessert - him a sorbet, myself a brownie. The brownie was a bit dry - a tad overbaked. The ambience was quite pleasant, comfortable and airy. The seating was very plush with good spacing between tables. There was also a back garden/patio area - unfortunately on a very warm day it was full, so couldn't get seating out there. But, because the establishment is quite airy and there is good air circulation we were not stifling. I would highly recommend the place - the beer my husband had was a local - Hogs Back Hopping Hog. Very delighted with this, and was recommended by our waitress. The staff were quite knowledgeable, discreet, and pleasant.
