I'm noticing a pattern here: I really wanted to like Bikeorbar, but felt underwhelmed by my experience. There were certainly many good points, but the facility is too small to achieve their communal goals. Again, I won't rule out a return to Bikeorbar in the future, but I'm not feeling an overwhelming desire to return. Maybe someday, but not now. I'll start with an overwhelming positive: the Surf-Barred class on Tuesdays and Saturdays, though I preferred the Tuesday class. For those of you not familiar with Surfset boards, they are balance boards in the style of surfboards and can be challenging but effective in your workouts. On Tuesday, the class is taught by Brit, and the Saturday class is taught by Tay. Brit is a phenomenal instructor, she breaks down each set with modifications at various levels, and is encouraging, especially for new students. Tay is also a good instructor, but I was turned off by her drill sergeant, food shaming, minimal modification style. You may find that effective, and many people do, but I didn't. Everyone is different. Spinning, typically a favorite of mine, is the most popular option at Bikeorbar. I am extremely picky about my spin classes and tried a few different instructors, but none of them really stood out for me. The class uses those heart monitor trackers and throws your numbers up on a giant screen for the whole class to see. Again, some people find this effective, but I found it flawed and in need of refining. Do yourself a favor and don't look at your numbers, the number will drop and you'll be surprised because you feel like your muscles are going to explode, but the numbers make it look like you aren't even trying at all. Again, good for some, not for me. Bikeorbar does have a serious issue in the capacity. The facility is small: there's no room between the bikes and you're often stepping on people on your way to the bathroom. No locker room here, change at home before you arrive. No off-street parking, I battled my way for spots along Elmwood. I didn't usually have any issues, but everyone knows I prefer a dedicated parking lot and make few exceptions. What I'm more concerned about is that classes are often filled over capacity and the studio is packed to the gills with regularity. I hope there's never an issue where you'd have to evacuate because you are already packed in like sardines and the exits are narrow. Finally, on a more superficial level, Bikeorbar seems preoccupied with being the "hot girl in the video". There are screens playing music videos during classes, which is good for having something to look at, but the music selections are of the same top 40 songs that represent the adage, commonly attributed to Voltaire, that "anything too stupid to be said is sung". You know what I mean. The screens should offer opportunities for theme classes, like 80s spin or boy bands or Michael Jackson or something, but instead, it's nothing but Jason Derulo, Ariana Grande, and a whole smattering of twerking thongs that speak for themselves. Wasted opportunity indeed. It stands to reason that Bikeorbar will eventually outgrow the space on Elmwood, and maybe I'll return when they do. But until then, I'll have to find a spin class where the girl in the video wants to do something with her life besides demonstrate how tightly her thong fits.

Great place with high energy. If the workout doesn't challenge you then you're not pushing hard enough. I think I'll be back, gotta find a way to make this a regular part of my routine

I've heard about the Himalayan Institute for a while, but finally took the plunge and signed up for a 6-week long class series of their "Level II" yoga classes last night. The Himalayan Institute is a wonderful 501(3)c non-profit that offers yoga classes, workshops, lectures, etc inside their elegant mansion on Delaware Ave. When you stop in, you feel like you're inside a cozy home. There's a place to take off your shoes and an immediate bookstore to your left. Further down, there's the main living room where classes take place. It helps to take a class that has 10-12 people and not too much more as the room can get pretty crowded with 16+ people or so I hear. Here's what stands out about the Himalayan Institute: their yoga classes generally center around a meditation-practice. As a result, I feel incredibly relaxed and focused afterward. As opposed to some classes (such as Evolation), where I sweat like I'm inside some Finnish bathhouse and leave the class with more of an exercise high. With most classes, you have to sign up for a full 6-week commitment (usually $80), although they do offer drop-in classes on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm for beginners ($5) and on Saturdays (9:30-11am) for a more intermediate ($10) practice. In summary, I adore their meditative approach, yoga teachers as well as the novelty of practicing yoga inside a cozy old mansion. Unfortunately, there are no accessible showers in the facility, but there is a bathroom where you can change.

Prior to the pandemic I did Baptiste style power yoga for several years, but when my studio closed…read moreI fell out on any exercise except dog walking and just couldn't get it back. I started to feel my age, lots of aches and pains. For some reason, this March I decided to purchase an introductory pass to I am Yoga - a studio I had had my eye on for a while, wanting to try 26 & 2 style yoga. Just shy of 4 months later, I can't get enough of this studio or this style of yoga. The studio itself is very nice - I enjoy the setting in the Williamsville village, there is plenty of room to navigate entrances and exits and they have a nice locker room. The hot yoga room is large and comfortable - never feels crowded despite good attendance. You can either choose a dark corner to really settle inward or put yourself near a sunny window. Everyone is very friendly and low key - you never feel any pressure of any kind. The yoga is HOT, but I love that. I know it's not for everyone. I was surprised how much I like the regularity of the 26 & 2 sequence - strangely I never get bored as there just seems to be an infinite journey in each move - hard to explain. I can't believe how much I have strengthened - old injuries (knee surgeries) seem to be healing, aches and pains disappearing, feeling younger and with increased body positivity. The best result is in the area of mental health - my anxiety is much better. This style of yoga I find very meditative. Teachers are great - I take most of the classes from Madeline, but they're all great - they transmit the traditional dialogue, but oddly it never feels scripted. I LOVE that they have 6am classes - really a game changer for getting me there as I have trouble making it after work. I enjoy the Forrest Flow class on Tuesday nights but have trouble getting there regularly. Another factor - the participants are very diverse - from age, to gender, to "ability" level, everybody can be on their own journey, but together! Highly recommend trying out this studio!

I have a love hate relationship with yoga in general…read more It was trending towards the hate until I tried Bikram in NYC about 15 years ago. I don't know what got me in the first time. May have been as simple as a place opened on one of my regular walking routes. Not sure. But back then they offered unlimited classes for a few weeks for "newbies" for a very reasonable price. That studio was small and cramped, it's NYC after all. The changing rooms were sparse and not very nice, have to say. So I did the yoga for the time I had bought, and even got a few friends hooked with me. It was hard work, but so is living in NYC, so we were ready for the challenge. I didn't re-up when my trial ran out for a few reasons. Not the least of which was I heard about Bikrams behavior even back then. And I just didn't want to support that. But flash forward 15 years. And I'm looking for something to help me stretch more as I clearly need to do. With a shoulder that's been bothering me for ages now I remembered that Bikram had made me stronger for sure, even in the short time I did it. So I came here to try them out for a month. It's a friendly place. The ladies locker room is ok, certainly better than NYC. They have showers. I think you can rent towels too. Bring your own mat or use one of theirs for $2. They have bags in the locker rooms for your wet sweaty clothes after class. Bikram is done in over 100 degrees. It's 90 min. They really ask that you try to stay in the room the whole time. Especially your first few visits. But if you are feeling the heat, you can sit out a pose. This location offers 75 and 60 min hot classes too, which I was not familiar with. I like the 75 but find the 60 min a little fast paced for me. But remember, I find yoga very difficult. The yoga studio is huge. There are some posts that do disrupt views in the room. The mirrors are not aligned with each other so make sure you are aware of that when picking a spot, since the mirrors are important in Bikram classes. This is not a place that's easily accessible for the disabled - up a long flight of stairs to the second floor. They sell various types of water and EmergencE etc. all for reasonable prices. But you can also just bring your own. If there were things to think about - the ceiling lights are harsh to look at, and you are supposed to have your eyes open for the class, and you spend time looking at the ceiling. Another reviewer said it didn't have that "Bikram scent" - but it does. Just be prepared for it. I'm giving 5 stars because the environment is just so welcoming. And the "newbies" month unlimited is a great price. If you haven't tried Bikram, you need more than one class to really "get" it. If you've tried but not here, come try it. Great studio. Street parking, but watch the signs. Or there's a lot in back.

Feel free to bring your own yoga mat but they got you covered if you forget it. Also LIM supplies each class with yoga accessories to use at your liking (think: block, blanket). The space is super chill with yoga instructors who know what they are doing but also won't judge you if you don't know what in the world a Savasana or an Asana is ( yes I just googled those terms). I really enjoy my cardio but it is good to take a moment to just be and chill. LIM definitely sets the bar for allowing you to take some time and reflect while focusing on challenging moves. If you like yoga this is DEFF the place for you. If you're like me and feel hesitant to go because you like your spinning, running, HITT, or whatever it may be - JUST GO anyway - taking 1 day out of your week to break from the norm and really focus inward makes a difference. At least for me anyway. Class times vary check the website for specific times. Also they periodically offer classes and workshops that target specific interests to enhance your practice.
