My happy place
Jamie L.

Growing up I played high impact sports such as basketball and volleyball. I used to scoff when people told me they did yoga to work out. Oh, you stretch side to side? Must be soooo tough. I was prodded by a girlfriend to join her at a PYB class about three years ago. I went, slightly nervous because I had never tried it, and slightly intimidated by the heated room. I was expecting my experience to confirm my preconceived notion that yoga isn't a "workout." My goodness, I was so wrong. The studio is heated to around 90-95 degrees, which is just enough to loosen your muscles and help you get a good sweat going. The instructors are so friendly and upbeat, truly pushing you to do your best. And the workout is UNBELIEVABLE. After my first class I couldn't believe how sore I was for two days afterward! Truly a workout for muscles I didn't even know existed. The best part about these classes is you go at your own pace. Nobody is forcing you into a headstand if you (like me) aren't there yet. You challenge yourself, and push yourself to your own limits. Nobody is judging you, and this is reinforced throughout the class. These workouts are mind, body, and soul. For a different experience, or to step outside your own comfort zone and challenge yourself, PYB is definitely the top tier place in Buffalo.

The crew and community at Power Yoga have great joyful energy!

I was only in town for 2.5 days but I needed my yoga fix for PT and mental clarity. I took the Power Hour class at Power Yoga taught by Brendan and had such a great experience that I returned, but to the Main Street location to try a different class before leaving town. This time I took the Power Yoga class by Audrey. It was one of my top three fav yoga classes ever. (I have taken classes at studios all over the US and in Vancouver, BC.) Audrey has a great spunky energy and it was an excellent challenging 75-minute flow. The perfect length! She was knowledgeable, genuinely welcoming, and used fun music. Mats are available for rent and mat towels. I cannot wait to return the next time I am in Buffalo. As I reported in my review of their Elmwood location, Power Yoga is worth it whether you're a local or just visiting.

I had my first experience of power yoga ever this past Saturday. Rob was the instructor and can we say I'm addicted! It was fast paced but enough where everyone had time to move into positions. He pushed you to hold positions while your muscles were shaking but always in an encouraging empowering way! I tried my first inversions after class. yes yoga is for "you" but I didn't want to be embarrassed during class trying them. I've done Bikram for over a year and have tried other yoga classes but Power Yoga is my happy place! You'll be sore the next day my abs ached when I was laughing for two days but that's the sign of a good workout! Plenty of parking, and everyone was so friendly! I'm moving to the North Towns and plan on making Power Yoga a staple studio of mine!

OMG I AM IN LOOOOOOOOVE! This yoga studio is so full of not only incredibly passionate teachers but students as well! Ever morning at 6AM the studio is absolutely PACKED with students! And they aren't zombies! Everyone is full of energy and excitement chatting away! The new student special is GREAT! But even better is the week unlimited // for someone like me who travels, it's the only way I can practice at a reasonable price. A shout out to my favorite teacher - Catherine is incredible, even though her classes are difficult it's a full body AND mind experience, she truly teaches and I am so grateful for her approach. She teaches a new approach to life or gratitude or appreciation technique in every class, reads from the books she studies and applies that days teachings throughout class so that you're using yoga to truly practice!! Thank you Catherine!!

I prefer a quieter experience when I enter my yoga space, but that's me. The class itself was hatha so I wasn't expecting an experience where i would be dripping sweat, but this was a very gentle class...yes you can deepen the postures as you need to, but that was challenging when there were so many people in the class that we had little room to accommodate. There is a really beautiful alter that adds a lot to the atmosphere, along with plenty of props for use. There was restrooms and changing areas available as well.

Michael, the owner is a knowledgeable teacher and often brings in new practices from the conferences / etc he attends. There's signs on the ceiling of the main studio that remind you to "focus" and "smile," and the smaller details add a nice touch that demonstrates that a lot of care was put into making this a welcoming environment. The reason I'm only giving it four stars is because there is definitely room to make this place more homey and welcoming. I would suggest: a) Free tea, free mat rentals, a free class every now and then, just some perks. Maybe I like free stuff a little too much, but I think this place could benefit from being more generous to its regulars (they do deals on LivingSocial every now and then) and getting the community more involved.

I've heard about the Himalayan Institute for a while, but finally took the plunge and signed up for a 6-week long class series of their "Level II" yoga classes last night. The Himalayan Institute is a wonderful 501(3)c non-profit that offers yoga classes, workshops, lectures, etc inside their elegant mansion on Delaware Ave. When you stop in, you feel like you're inside a cozy home. There's a place to take off your shoes and an immediate bookstore to your left. Further down, there's the main living room where classes take place. It helps to take a class that has 10-12 people and not too much more as the room can get pretty crowded with 16+ people or so I hear. Here's what stands out about the Himalayan Institute: their yoga classes generally center around a meditation-practice. As a result, I feel incredibly relaxed and focused afterward. As opposed to some classes (such as Evolation), where I sweat like I'm inside some Finnish bathhouse and leave the class with more of an exercise high. With most classes, you have to sign up for a full 6-week commitment (usually $80), although they do offer drop-in classes on Thursdays from 5:30-6:30pm for beginners ($5) and on Saturdays (9:30-11am) for a more intermediate ($10) practice. In summary, I adore their meditative approach, yoga teachers as well as the novelty of practicing yoga inside a cozy old mansion. Unfortunately, there are no accessible showers in the facility, but there is a bathroom where you can change.

Yoga changed my life and I'm happy to say that my journey started in this studio…read more If this is your first time I have some recommendations for you: 1) Everyone is different, but I suggest not eating anything two hours prior class (just to avoid felling sick while in class). They offer 60, 75 and 90 min classes. If feeling uncertain about hot yoga go for the 60 min class and work your body to the 90 min. They also do a 5$ Friday class, just in case you want to try the practice without breaking the bank. 2) On your first day, come early there is a waiver to sign (I think you can also do it online). You'll need a mat and towel, you can borrow them for the first class. On the following class they can be rented. Also there are separate locker rooms for males and females. Inside there is a place for storing clothes, a shower and bathroom. 3) Make sure to bring water into the hot room. I typically bring a 1L bottle of cold water (not frozen). If you forget, bottles of water can be purchased at the studio. 4) Get yourself sometime to settle. I like to get inside the hot room 5-10min before class. Just to get my body use to the heat. If you are not sure about how to do some of the posses I would recommend staying at the back of the room and look upon others. ***Brikram is taught without the instructor making the poses. 5) Don't overdo the postures. Learn to understand your body and give yourself some time to get there. It might take you, weeks, months or years to fully do a pose and that is okay. Go at your own pace. 6) Don't hold your breath. When I started, I used to hold my breath in during certain poses and that made me dizzy halfway through the class. If that happens, lay on your mat (death body pose), take deep breaths until you feel better. Try not to go outside, unless is absolutely necessary. It is very distracting and disrespectful to your classmates. 7) Take advantage of their intro special (39$ for one month of unlimited classes). The first couple of days are tough but within a month you will start to feel and see how your body changes. Lastly, I read previous comments about the smell in the studio. I'm happy to report that the old stinky carpet was changed last year. The new wood flooring looks great and the studio nowadays smells like lavender.

I have a love hate relationship with yoga in general…read more It was trending towards the hate until I tried Bikram in NYC about 15 years ago. I don't know what got me in the first time. May have been as simple as a place opened on one of my regular walking routes. Not sure. But back then they offered unlimited classes for a few weeks for "newbies" for a very reasonable price. That studio was small and cramped, it's NYC after all. The changing rooms were sparse and not very nice, have to say. So I did the yoga for the time I had bought, and even got a few friends hooked with me. It was hard work, but so is living in NYC, so we were ready for the challenge. I didn't re-up when my trial ran out for a few reasons. Not the least of which was I heard about Bikrams behavior even back then. And I just didn't want to support that. But flash forward 15 years. And I'm looking for something to help me stretch more as I clearly need to do. With a shoulder that's been bothering me for ages now I remembered that Bikram had made me stronger for sure, even in the short time I did it. So I came here to try them out for a month. It's a friendly place. The ladies locker room is ok, certainly better than NYC. They have showers. I think you can rent towels too. Bring your own mat or use one of theirs for $2. They have bags in the locker rooms for your wet sweaty clothes after class. Bikram is done in over 100 degrees. It's 90 min. They really ask that you try to stay in the room the whole time. Especially your first few visits. But if you are feeling the heat, you can sit out a pose. This location offers 75 and 60 min hot classes too, which I was not familiar with. I like the 75 but find the 60 min a little fast paced for me. But remember, I find yoga very difficult. The yoga studio is huge. There are some posts that do disrupt views in the room. The mirrors are not aligned with each other so make sure you are aware of that when picking a spot, since the mirrors are important in Bikram classes. This is not a place that's easily accessible for the disabled - up a long flight of stairs to the second floor. They sell various types of water and EmergencE etc. all for reasonable prices. But you can also just bring your own. If there were things to think about - the ceiling lights are harsh to look at, and you are supposed to have your eyes open for the class, and you spend time looking at the ceiling. Another reviewer said it didn't have that "Bikram scent" - but it does. Just be prepared for it. I'm giving 5 stars because the environment is just so welcoming. And the "newbies" month unlimited is a great price. If you haven't tried Bikram, you need more than one class to really "get" it. If you've tried but not here, come try it. Great studio. Street parking, but watch the signs. Or there's a lot in back.

I would absolutely recommend yoga Parkside to anybody just starting out or for those who've been practicing for years. It is located in a church so when you enter you immediately feel like you are in sacred space-there is that church smell that comes along with it. It is also a multi-use space, so there might be a dance or music lesson occurring while you are practice (important to know if you are really looking for a quieter yoga experience). It can be cold in some of the yoga spaces (there are a few spaces, one is an attic, one is a dance studio) so I recommend that you dress warmly and then remove layers if needed. I can't fully relax when I'm cold. They have all the props that are necessary for various classes so you don't have to bring your own.

Great new yoga studio on Niagara street right next to Resurgence and upper level of Bootleg Bucha…read more LIM has been around for quite some time doing pop up classes throughout Buffalo but now they finally have a groovy space to call their own. Feel free to bring your own yoga mat but they got you covered if you forget it. Also LIM supplies each class with yoga accessories to use at your liking (think: block, blanket). The space is super chill with yoga instructors who know what they are doing but also won't judge you if you don't know what in the world a Savasana or an Asana is ( yes I just googled those terms). I really enjoy my cardio but it is good to take a moment to just be and chill. LIM definitely sets the bar for allowing you to take some time and reflect while focusing on challenging moves. If you like yoga this is DEFF the place for you. If you're like me and feel hesitant to go because you like your spinning, running, HITT, or whatever it may be - JUST GO anyway - taking 1 day out of your week to break from the norm and really focus inward makes a difference. At least for me anyway. Class times vary check the website for specific times. Also they periodically offer classes and workshops that target specific interests to enhance your practice.
