While cleaning out my buildings basement I was praying , not rats ,no monsters , no enormous amount of junk and I was three for three as there was little to remove but a former tenant or tenants left 2 bikes and I don't ride bikes that much but getting them fixed or looked at seemed easy enough .my cuz took me to bike stop in Astoria which sells , fixed and tune up all types from bikes and they have plenty of bikes for all types of riding .Bike number one was not worth fixing as it was a cheap old Kmart type but bike number 2 was worth the 350 dollar fix up as it was a schwinn mountain bike worth over a grand . The bike still looks old but the repair guy told me that all the moving parts , etc, are spanking new and the old fashion look is schwinn classic. Gave the bike to my cuz who is a regular routine bike rider and I am not .4 stars for Bike stop in Astoria for all your bike needs . read more

I had an extremely rude encounter when going to pick up my bike from a tune up. I was willing to let that slide. My bike wasn't clean, let alone even wiped down. I was willing to let that slide. But the following morning when I went to check my tires before a ride, I realized the pin that holds air in the tube of my back tire was broken. As soon as I touched it, it snapped and boom no air, can't ride. My tire had no issues before I dropped it to this shop. Do yourself a favor and bring your bike to someone who actually cares. I was a good regular customer of this place for the past three years. That has come to an end. I had taken my bike to them for tune-ups and repairs in the past and found them totally reasonably priced. I had also previously asked them to clean it, when I returned I found it was not even wiped down, and then a third time it still wasn't washed, only then was I informed they don't have a hose or hot soapy water or whatever to even accomplish a wash. Taking it in for my spring tune-up this time, having washed and waxed it myself, I was told it would be $65. Due to unrelated circumstances, I had no choice but to leave the bike behind. When I went in a week later to pick it up, the price had jumped up to SEVENTY-SIX DOLLARS...to turn a few screws and dribble some oil. Nothing will convince me they spent more than thirty to forty minutes on this job, and if they'd told me they they'd spend longer, I would have told them not to anyway. As I told the guy, there are literally people with PHDs who don't make $150/hr. I certainly don't. If you can't find another place that won't try to rip you off like this one, just buy a couple wrenches, oil, watch some YouTube videos, and do it yourself. It's not rocket science. read more

Brought my bike in to get two flats repaired. They said I would need to leave it over night to fix. They called the next day after they closed to let me know the bike was repaired. I came the next morning to pick it up and it still wasn't ready. They called me back later in the afternoon to confirm it actually was ready. I rode my bike home and everything was fine, only to see that a couple of hours later the tires are flat again. Paid $20 for them to babysit my bike for two days and no repairs. The guys who work here are really nice, but I am frustrated that my tires were not actually fixed. read more

Terrible service. I dropped my bike off twice and twice they didn't provide the service I requested. If there was an issue I feel I should have been called but instead they waited for me to come in. The second time I went to pick it up I asked if they could please do what I asked without making me wait another week seeing as how iv already waited 2 weeks. WooHoo! As good as it gets! Is right! I brought my old crappy 10 speed Shwinn Varsity Dexluxe in to the shop right after I bought it in Astoria, and they were happy to give it a look over. Francisco, the store manager was super helpful and nice to give me some tips and taught me about the unique 'qualities' of my bike. They didn't charge me for all of the time they took looking it over and even suggested that it was fine the way it was. I also came in one time because I had a lump in my tire. After a quick look and a tire refill, we figured out I had an old tube that was on its last leg. I've since had some cables, tires, and tubes replaced at the shop. The work was handled quickly and as promised and I love visiting and chatting it up in the store. Thanks guys! You could not find a more professional and fun bike shop anywhere! read more

Didn't get my bike here, but I do come here for everything else. Gus the owner is definitely very friendly and helpful with his knowledge of all things bike shining through. I typically come on weekends as I can never make it home from work in time before they close on weekdays, so I've only encountered two other employees here. The weekend employees are equally friendly and knowledgeable and the times I've brought in my bike/tire for repair they've been fast. They've also been nice enough to try to get things fixed while keeping things low cost without sacrificing the quality of repair. read more

Cycling is my life. Until I moved back to my native United States from Japan and took a job as a corporate master of the universe, I wouldn't have considered taking any job I couldn't ride to and from or which didn't allow me enough time to ride more than 3000 miles a year. Though I have now accepted the inevitable necessity of making as much money as possible and the life that goes with it, I still am in need of a solid bike shop--and this one does rather well for my general needs. First thing, if you're looking to buy a new bike, the prices really couldn't be better than you'll find at either Bike Stop or Tony's Bicycle on 35th Street at 23rd Avenue in Astoria. Neither is a fancy pro shop, but Bike Stop at least has no lack of that combination of mechanical talent and years of experience that make a bike shop good and keep the high end customers like myself coming back. The fact that neither is a pro shop selling top-of-the-line bikes means that joe and jane public will be able to find the right bikes at more than fair prices without having to work on their haggling skills. And if you really need top-of-the-line, they're capable of any special order you might require or perhaps even an equivilant on hand for less--which is what a great bike shop does--advise. I don't go to this shop regularly because it's conveniently close to my home. There are at least three top level pro shops I'd easily go to for absolutely everything if Bike Stop wasn't pretty good. So I feel confident in recommending them for your general needs in terms of buying a bike and having one serviced. As for selection, I always end up buying nearly every part and accessory online, and most often at Performancebike.com , and while Bike Stop has a good in-store selection, even though it's far from everything you could possibly need, they're supplier is Performance--so you get the Performance prices and selection along with the good advice and service of the Bike Stop staff. If you live in Astoria, LIC, East Elmhurst or anywhere else in the general vicinity, I highly recommend Bike Stop. Post Script: I don't know why I can't manage to get this place categorized as a bike shop rather than "bike rentals" in Yelp, but you should know that they do not rent bikes--everything but. ** EDIT: After I posted this review, "Bike S." sent me a message saying that he'd been on the phone with Giant trying to get my bike's serial number for the cops. Then he gave me a call letting me know that Giant was unable to help. We talked for a bit about bike safety. He apologized. Would this have happened if I didn't bitch all over Bike Stop's Yelp page? Unknown. Still, I feel a bit better about the experience, and I've learned to do my own research on keeping my bike safe rather than rely on customer service to do it for me. Fair enough. ** I've always had cheap, crappy hand-me-down bikes, but over the summer I saved up and bought a Giant Escape hybrid here. I made a point to tell the dude taking my money that I had no experience with bikes, and asked for pointers on taking care of it. So why didn't he tell me the part about immediately registering the bike's serial number with the police in case it ever got stolen? When he told me that the bike's information was on file at the store, why didn't he mention that they don't keep the serial number on file? Why did he wait to give me a lecture on what I was supposed to have done until after it was stolen and I dropped by looking for a reprint of the receipt for the police? My chain caught up on the wheel and threw it out of true - still ride-able, no broken spokes, but less than ideal. I ride into Bike Stop and ask for a true, they say I'll have to leave it for an hour. An hour? The place is empty, no customers, no bike on the rack being repaired. On my commute home from work after the light changed green pedaling became very difficult. I attempt to shift, but nothing happens. After examining my chain a bit I realize the rear derailleur cable is just hanging there no longer connected to my shifters. Luckily I was only a few blocks from home. Once I remembered there was a bike shop a couple blocks away from my apartment I took a walk over to inquire about fixing it. The man at the desk let me know it would cost $15 - $20. I asked if it could be fixed that night and he let me know that they close in 45 minutes, but if I really need it I could bring it over and they would fix it. I quickly went and grabbed my bike from my apartment and dropped it off. They told me to come back in 20 minutes. Sure enough 20 minutes later my bike was back to normal and it only cost about $17. What great service. Friendly, quick, and cheap service. Can't ask for more. read more

Great bike shop! I've used their air compressor several times before and was always super glad that it's available right outside. But yesterday I discovered that I had a flat tire and was super bummed. Brought it in on a Sunday morning, got it fixed in just a few minutes and left happy. The guy even checked up on my bike real quick and I could tell that he knew what he was doing. Love, love, love, love! A friend gave me a bike. I took it to Bike Stop to get a tune-up. Then I went back multiple times to buy accessories. They gave honest opinions about the products, even selling me less expensive items b/c they knew I didn't need the high end stuff. Yes, some of the accessories I could buy online for slightly cheaper, but the Bike Stop guys install them and explain how they work. They are all friendly and laid-back, which should not be mistaken for uncaring. When they're not busy, they are always willing to give advice on bike safety and any other general biking questions I have, since I've only been biking for a year. Bought a bike from a person across two blocks away. Rode it for five minutes on the HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR and the tire popped. Last night my wife and I went bike shopping. After a few stops at other shops we stopped at "Bike Stop." The service was wonderful. Both Justine and Mark were great and informative and extremely patient. My kids were running around an extremely busy shop, they never complained set both of our bikes up and stayed open over an hour late to finish working on our bikes. Justine helped my wife find a bike she was extremely comfortable to her and Mark helped me pick my first fixed gear. I even looked up the pricing after and their pricing were comparable to other retailers. I read these reviews and have no idea what warrants some of these complaints because I had ZERO issue with this place. I am going to recommend all my friends to go there. I hate giving reviews but as a business owner who also GETS reviews and appreciates it when people take the time, here goes. My bike is junk but I love it so I took it here for some new parts. This review is basically going to cover the experience of the drop off. It was busy when I got there, but I was noticed and "be right with you'd". After going over what I needed with Carlos (bottom bracket, new crankset, new chainring, new headset, all installed) the cost of goods turned out to be a little better than I was expecting after some research online and at different shops. Sweet. The labor charge for the install was WAY less than I anticipated so realizing I had "extra" cash on hand I asked about a new brake caliper and handle, because after two sets of pads I could never get the brake to have that crushing, "careful or you'll go over the bars" type of stopping power. Carlos took a look at my setup and basically told me he could make what I have work extremely well with new pads and small adjustments only, and that I should let him do his thing and try it out before laying out unnecessary cash on new parts. I thought this was awesome of him and agreed. Sweet 2. So as far as the experience of dropping the bike off, customer service and pricing, I'm happy. Picking up the bike today so we'll see what the result of the work is but I got a sense that Carlos was competent and confident so I'm expecting to be happy. The 1st time I went there the worker was very friendly and quick to fix my flat. Unfortunately he made a mistake. The new tube had been pinched and we Pilsner hold air. The 2nd time I went the worker heard my story and quickly fixed the flat again, this time free of charge. It was an honest mistake the 1st time and I appreciate their response to it. Because of their honesty and positive attitudes I'll certainly go back to them the next time I'm in need of some gear or a repair. read more

Hit or miss. Ive gone in and gotten major attitude from the one lady who works there. But, when I bought a new bike from her, she was pretty helpful and nice, almost to the point that I was gonna ask, "So the meds have finally kicked in?" I dropped my bike off here after attempting to assemble a new bike on my own ...and perhaps YouTube videos. Apparently it's not as easy as putting IKEA furniture together so I caved and rolled my bike over to Bike Stop. My breaks were not closing properly plus my tires were not fully pumped. A great bike shop in Astoria with very knowledgeable staff. They offer 4 years of free servicing if you buy from them and they carry all major brands such as trek, giant, cannondale. If they dont have a specific bike model they order for you. They are also not pushy salesmen like and let u ride couple of bikes and take your time to make a decision. I've ridden bikes all my life, having been a BMX and MTB competitor when I lived in Seattle and Kansas City but now it's mainly for pleasure and exercise. I am relatively new to road frames and I'm just now trying fixed gear but I've never felt talked down to by the staff. I have had nothing but professional yet relaxed service from everyone at the shop. I quickly became friends with some of them and if I need even the slightest adjustment with a tool I don't have, I don't hesitate to take it to them and they don't hesitate to help me out. A great example I can give is when I visited the other day with some new cogs I had just bought (from an online vendor). Mark helped me out without hesitation as usual, no questions asked (very cool). I wanted to go fixed/fixed this time and replace my unused freewheel with a 17T cog so I could run 17T/18T. He went through the trouble of taking the freewheel off (and putting it back on) when we realized the hub would only let you do fixed/free. Then, because I wanted to now ride the 17, he went through the trouble of taking the 18 off and putting the 17 on...and all with a smile. I've never gotten this kind of service at any other shop...anywhere. Big ups to the Bike Stop crew. I didn't end up getting my newest bike from them but that didn't change the way I was treated, which is uncommon. I have spent quite a bit there on parts and accessories though. Another thing: they are truly interested in stocking the latest stuff. I asked Justine about getting a CatEye computer that (I didn't know) had just been released and she had two of them in stock in a week. I've seen a few things that I thought were listed a little high but by and large, they're very reasonable. That said, I've gotten discounts on more than one occasion too. I love this place! I bought a bike a year ago at the Bike Stop with little to no understanding of what I was doing or what I needed. Carlos and the guys helped me make a great choice and I've been riding happy ever since. I've been in every now and then to buy accessories for the bike and am totally juiced up with a bell, a rack with a basket, fenders, even a water bottle cage! They guys never suggest anything they know I won't want or need and offer it at great prices. I stopped in today for a tune up and was so pleased they remember me after a year AND that the tune up was free! Such a wonderful community they've got going on here. Highly recommended. read more

So I'm torn. Bought gloves ($28) that after an hour of riding started digging in. Took them off to inspect and found that the left was completely worn through. BRAND new worn through? Something tells me someone wore them for X months and just them back on shelf. Shady. But...I'm torn. This review is long overdue because bike stop is the best in the neighborhood. I depend on my bike for work, and during the times of the year when the roads are rough I need fast and efficient maintenance for flats and such. Bike Stop is always fast, friendly, and reasonably priced. I've never felt talked down to as a female cyclist either, unlike some other shops in the neighborhood. I've sent my coworkers here and they have all had good experiences too. They will even surprise me by cleaning my chain when I come in to get a flat repaired or a tire patched.
