You get what you pay for. We wanted to stay in the cute, colorful rooms since we always pass through for the restaurant. We stayed at the motel farther back near the horse stables. The shower wasn't deeply cleaned, but it looked clean overall and there were no bad smells. It's very dark back there, so it can feel a little sketchy, but nothing was broken into or messed with. I was tossed on 2 or 3 stars only because we love the steak restaurant and the experience. We had stayed at the motel about 4 yrs (front section close to lobby,that looks like a western town) and loved it but this time was put in second building in back. Was very close to walking back up to lobby to see if any rooms available in front. Getting out the car the parking lot was very dirty, got to room it was clean other than the flies but guess they know of flies bc at least they had a fly swatter in room I'm assuming from Horse hotel right outside room. No offense to the horses (I owed and love horses). Swimming pool looked run down and water cloudy (didn't go in) If I had one thing to say I would say please clean the parking lot regularly it wasn't inviting especially first impression. read more

Clean, spacious rooms right next door to the Big Texan restaurant. After eating one of their big steaks, I was so glad we only had to walk a few steps next door to the motel. Check-in was a breeze, all details were sent by text message so we didn't even have to stop at the front office. The attention to details in the room is outstanding. From the saloon door to the boot lamp to the charging port right by the bed, I appreciated all of the little extras. And the rain shower!! Honestly it felt more like a rainstorm, the water pressure was super high and I got squeaky clean in two seconds lol. The only drawback was the drain couldn't keep up with the amount of water and it was slow draining. The toilet water pressure wasn't as high either, but that's not bad. At the end of the day, this is a motel so the truck that started its engine at 6AM scared the crap out of us thinking a car was coming through the window. You do hear everything. If you like quirky, usual places stay, you might try The Big Texan. It is a touristy western, cowboy themed hotel with very few amenities but a fun place to stay. We like the keyless entry. You don't have to check in at the office. They send a door code to your phone. The beds are clean and comfortable. The only real negative was the noise from the interstate was loud until about 11 p. m. My only suggestion is that the motel could offer a small discount to be used at the Big Texan Steak House for breakfast, so guests could have a decent cup of coffee in the morning. The "in-room" coffee is really bad. read more

The motel staff uses the guest laundry room for the entire motel's bedding laundry. They have broken 3 of the 4 washing machines so far by overloading them. I waited all day before eventually removing the finished wet laundry into the dryer for them so I could do my own laundry. A bewildered staff member entered the room as I was doing so and apologized as she whisked away the dripping sheets in a shopping cart... I tried to contact management but they said nothing. $109 not well spent. There are a perfectly good hotels in walking distance of the restaurant. I sure won't be back. read more

The customer service doesn't exist you will get a text with a code to get into your room so the front desk is pointless. My husband and I are on a 4 week cross country road trip. When we decided to stay a night in Amarillo we thought we would check out the Big Texan Motel because it looked quirky and fun. It did not disappoint. The room was really cute and very comfortable. The check in and out process was very easy. Right across the parking lot is The Big Texan Steak Ranch which is a must see. We stayed here one night on our road trip to California, expecting an older motel without many amenities. We know it isn't a shiny new chain motel. Still, this place has lots of 'deferred maintenance, to be kind. I'm hoveringbetween 2 and 3 stars. First impression: they send a text so you can do a contactless check in, basically just the code to get into the room. Not a friendly beginning. I was a bit unsure so I went into the office. Another person was there, reporting a toilet leak that had flooded out to the bedroom carpet. She had used a towel to stop it from getting worse. The desk clerk asked if she needed maintenance right away or could it wait. What!?! He didn't even offer her more towels. She was very sweet and said it was fine but it really isn't okay. Then, our room wasn't ready at 3 so we had to drive away with all our luggage and no way to freshen up. Once we returned, we had to carry our luggage up an outside metal staircase that had so much rust there were holes (see photo). Not feeling great about the hotel, we carried in our Lysol words and did a little cleaning of our own. The bathroom was great but the bedside table....ugh! It took multiple wipes to get through the filth. Ditto for the swinging doors to the bathroom. I don't blame the cleaning staff as they are probably told to just dust. So, value for money? With tax, in early June 2022, on a Thursday night, over $130. So no, not a good value. We do not recommend you stay here. I hope they do the maintenance needed to bring this place up to snuff. On a GOOD note, we had a flat tire overnight and were waiting for a tow truck to get air. One of the motel or restaurant staff walked by, asked if we needed help and ended up bringing out a compressor to fill our tire. He refused money until we insisted. A good Samaritan! read more

We arrived late into the evening, dropped our bags off and ran to eat dinner. We hadn't returned to our room until closer to 11pm. As we settled in for the night; my husband noticed a bug on our bed. He brushed it into the toilet to throw it away. As I was nursing our 7 month old; I noticed another bug on my pillow. We looked it up and both bugs looked like adult bedbugs. We called the front desk and they said they would relocate us to their sister hotel the Cactus Cove Inn and Suites; that they would completely refund our stay. They provided us a receipt saying that the stay was refunded; however, the charge remains on our card. About two days after this motel stop I had itchy bite marks on my arm, as is congruent with bedbug bites. I've reached out to hotels.com and they contacted the motel. The motel manager is now refusing to refund our stay. This was an enormous inconvenience for us, as we had to relocate hotels that night at midnight with a seven month old baby. It is also very disappointing that Hotels.com is unable to do anything about this. One would think that a company would take care of their loyal customers...guess not! Do yourself a favor and avoid booking a night at this motel and booking through hotels.com. read more

Don't waste your time or money!!!! Sorely disappointed!!! Booked room that was supposed to be handicapped accessible. (We called before booking as booking was through a 3rd party. Never had an issue before doing it this way) Drove all day to get there! Exited to stay there and eat at the restaurant across the parking lot. Only to find out they're not able to accommodate a handicap person, even know we were told they could. They only have one handicapped room a they had given it out. They tried putting use is a second floor room. Normally that wouldn't be an issue however they didn't have any elevators only stairs.!! How is a wheelchair supposed to get up two flights of stairs!??! Then the cherry on top, we had to spend a whole lot more money (almost double) to get a room somewhere else last minute. read more

***Bed Bugs!!*** I stayed in room 109 on 11/25/22 with my husband and 3 kids. When we first arrived I noticed the room didn't seem super clean but I brushed it off. I checked for bugs like I always do and did not see anything. At about 2am I woke up to bed bugs everywhere! We left immediately, leaving clothes, shoes, and blankets behind to be trashed. As soon as the office opened, I called for a refund and the lady I spoke to did not seem surprised or worried about the bed bugs. I sifted through previous reviews after the fact and found reports of bed bugs starting in September. If they could get their infestation under control, this would be a nice place to stay. read more

I stayed here on Dec 9th on the 2rd floor. I'm driving across country. Room was clean, comfy bed & with the extra amenities, refrigerator, microwave & coffee machine plus extra technology, for help charging your device, considering it's an old establishment. We made reservations 8 months prior in order to have a place to stay after visiting the big steakhouse next door while traveling Route 66 with the dogs. Arrived at the place at check in time of 3pm and checked in and received a key. Went to the room and it wasn't ready yet. Took the dogs around the area for them to do their business and went back to the front deck and informed them that the room was not ready. We asked for a room that was ready and they told us that they were completely booked and couldn't reassign us a different room. Waited approximately 30 minutes in the lobby while two other parties were checked in and our room still wasn't ready. We then told the desk clerk that we would just go somewhere else for the night. She informed us that we were already charged via hotels.com and we would have to dispute it with them. Went down the road a few miles and got right in to another place. Needless to say I would not recommend Big Texan and I won't be dining at that steakhouse. read more

Rooms don't come with a bathtub, "bathtub" is just a standing shower. Rooms are good, you can just go with a simple room and it'll be sufficient. Area is safe so don't worry about leaving things in your car. Restaurant across the street looked amazing and looks like a must try place! Front host was very friendly! read more

$140 on a week night is kinda steep. I've stayed here many times because my kids like it and the nostalgia. Last few times I go myself driving but it's not like the rooms are nice. This was the fourth time we have stayed here over the years of back and forth moves across the country. We have loved stopping here because it is pet friendly and right next to the restaurant. In the past, rooms have been ok and customer service helpful. This place has gone down hill since the last time we stayed here two year ago, all the while it is more expensive compared to other hotels. Customer service is now via a remote location after 10pm and isn't there in the morning (10am). Our room had a huge wolf spider hanging out in the wall of the bathroom. Front desk lady told us there was nothing they could do. We went to have dinne, changed and tried using the pool. It was full of bugs and so cloudy that our little swimmer was out in 10 minutes. When we came back to go to bed we found dead bugs as well as used bandaids on the sheets. Front desk being abandoned since it was after 10, I called the remote agent to ask for fresh sheets. She said they would send someone with sheets as well as discount the room. No one ever came so we stripped the bed and slept on the mattress cover. Room was never discounted and the front desk wasn't present in the morning to raise the concern. After witnessing the cleaning crew, it was evident they don't change the blanket or comforter as all they were doing was changing the white sheets. Finally, the parking lot for trucks and trailers needs to be regrated as it is full of huge potholes. Needless to say, we will be finding a different place to stay in the future! read more

Easy check in, the room was nice they said it was recently renovated. Well they need to replace their service man the room needs some touch up. The swinging doors going to the bathroom missing the latches allowing them to be held open. You can see there has been a recent water leak in the shower. The doors and walls need to wiped down. I came here for my birthday trip and this is right next to the Big Texan Steak Ranch where we was going to eat so it just made sense to stay here The parking lot was full and I believe had some of the restaurant customers. It looked like a sort of western themed motel. The office was beautiful there we found out we'd have an upstairs room. Our room looked awesome and very clean, we loved the decor from the shutters instead of curtains to the swinging bar doors heading to the sink and bathroom areas. There's no ironing board, fridge or microwave, it's pretty basic. There's also not too many plug ins for phone chargers. It does have cable flat screen TV, a hair blow dryer by the sink and a coffee maker. We found out that there was no hot water for a shower, that was a big disappointment. Though the beds are nice and comfortable. There is also a dog corral, horse hotel, RV park and limo service. Check-in is between 3pm to 1am and check-out is 11am. The staff is nice. read more

The check in process was super easy and the receptionist was friendly. I love how they allow pets for free! Very much a tourist trap sort of place but was good enough for one night. Near an odd part of Amarillo, it is a mix of open land and dilapidated houses in the neighborhood behind. We skipped the restaurant because the prices were sort of outrageous (20 bucks chicken strips!) but it looked very good and is located walking distance away. Our room was fairly clean (bedding was stained and had what looked like oil marks on comforters) but I wasn't too concerned on that front. It doesn't smell like cigarettes smoke which is a big one for me. Loved the western decor. read more

ABSOLUTELY NOT! This place is a joke! It is nothing like they glorify on the website or even in videos I have seen. My daughter and I just drove 12 hours to stay two nights here and eat a steak at the "famous" Big Texan. Upon arrival, I realize we are in not just a room I did NOT book, but a disgusting one in the back corner of the Horse Hotel. Smh. How do you even make that mistake. I clearly picked out an available room of my choice. I waited until business hours, since the front desk is CLEARLY not 24/7. Nobody ever opened up the office. Nobody returned my calls, One clerk at a sister hotel tried to help me by moving me to another room, but 4 hours later I was still in my car waiting after a 12 hour drive and 3 hours waiting on service. FOUR hours while she was working on it. SEVEN total. Nobody on site. No email communication and a manager of at least two sites NOWHERE to be found and apparently does not return calls. We are two women from states away, here to have a good time and make memories. We made memories, alright and at least we are still ALIVE. read more

We loved room 107 and several others next to it as they are uniquely themed. Ours was country/ texas with a homestyle white bright decor, very comfortable quiet and feels safe. Parking is perfect for the room and walking across the lot to The Big Texan Steakhouse. They have a pool, dog park, horse hotel, trailer parking, semi parking, and many unusual photo opportunities on the grounds. The price was surprisingly cheap for the quality, the cute added touches such as Keurig Coffee Pots & pods in each room to the inside door being a daily diary of those who stay and are asked to note where they are from and date it. Very clean, and not just a place to sleep. 5+ stars We will be back for sure. read more

There are no curtains on the windows and the parking lot is very bright so your room looks like noon at midnight. The street noise sounds like the cars are driving through your room. I stayed at the big Texan on my way back to Texas from Nevada. If it was just me I would not have been so particular, but this is a review for families. I was traveling with just me (woman in her 30s) and two small children. Our room was 230 so we were in the very back of the parking lot. It was very dark back there and didn't make me feel the safest, so I would recommend to get a room closer toward the front. The room wasn't the cleanest. I didn't expect an updated room but atleast one without sticky liquid on the bedside table would have been appreciated. After being in the car for 14 hours I wanted to give the kids a bath but 1. The tub was disgusting with hair everywhere 2. There was no drain anyways, it had been removed so there would have been no way to utilize the tub. When I called and inquired about possibly switching rooms, having the tub cleaned or getting a tub plug I was told they couldn't help me. There's also no hotel lock on the door, just the main door lock. Maybe not the best for a mom and two kids alone. The good....the pool was nice and had an area that was 3ft for the kids. My one and only issue with this place is the considerable and constant amount of traffic noise inside of the room. Otherwise, it was a complete hoot to see the place and to stay there. I wanted to bash this place, but couldn't. So instead, let me give you a couple of tips to enjoy it more. First. The motel shares the parking lot with the restaurant. So if you thinking about parking in front of your room, be prepared to play a waiting game. My suggestion, if you book in advance, call to confirm. Ask for a first story room if that is what you want (not a big fan of hauling stuff up stairs). Also the motel is in two sections. Ask for a room in the back one. Parking will be easier and you are closer to the pool. This place has charm. Plenty of great western idea (that you can do on a budget). T1-11 siding and metal roofing for the interior walls (it works). A oak barrel cut in half for the end tables. The place is clean and believe it or not, even with a parking lot full of hungry people, it was quiet. read more
