What can I say but "Beware!". The hotel looks nice enough and the price is matching the looks. The rooms are not exactly cheap but they can do with some TLC. In the room I had the bathroom ceiling was in urgent need of repairs which you would not expect for that price. Worse is their handling of WiFi. Where in most hotels WiFi is free nowadays they feel the need to charge you 10 USD per day for WiFi. You have to pay that but if you are a BonVoy member you can (afterwards!) ge6 it removed from your bill. At checkout I mentioned this since I am a BonVoy member and the lady said she would remove it from the bill. I did not get a new bill however and as far as I can see they charged me for it anyway. This kind of robbery is in my opinion not to be expected from a decent hotel! I contacted them about it afterwards but after two messages they see to have chosen to ignore me! read more

I stayed one night at the Barfield in Amarillo, and that was enough. First the good. The rooms are spacious and airy, tastefully decorated. The bed is comfortable, the linens and towels of the quality expected in a nice hotel. Physically, the place is nice. What is lacking is a customer experience commensurate with their hype. They are posers. Gone are the days, when the clerk comes from behind the counter to hand you your room key and walk you to the elevator. That used to be a Marriott trademark, but no trace of it at the Barfield. I decided to eat at the bar. Same menu as the hotel's Toscana Italian Steakhouse. Even though there were three women behind the bar, and only six other patrons, it took a while to be recognized, since the staff were all busily chit-chatting with each other. Finally, one of the women brought me a glass of bar mix. I looked at it, trying to figure out what it was. It was the consistency of large-grain salt--I would need a spoon to eat it. I asked another of the staff on her way by what it was, and, after examining it, she said, "It looks like you got the bottom of the bag." What level of mindlessness does it take to pour a glass of bar-mix crumbs, hand it to a guest, and think that's world-class? Dinner was the next disappointment. I was interested in the "Creole Tortellini," but asked if they could prepare it with any type of red sauce, instead of the cream sauce. "No problem," I was told. As I was finishing my salad, the woman returned to say they couldn't accommodate the request because "everything was already mixed together." Prepared in-kitchen earlier in the day, or in a Sysco bag, I'll never know. Next try was Steak Frites, steak done medium. It came out medium-well with cold fries. The highlight was the glass of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo I ordered. The "fond farewell" I received early next morning was from the "valet." When he brought the car around, he exited the car, closed the door, and handed me the key as he walked by me while I stood at the rear of my car with my bag. He rushed back inside, leaving me standing there with his tip in my hand. Based on my experience, the Barfield wants to be a high-end hotel, but not enough to actually work at it. This is a lovely hotel, very clean, everyone was more than friendly, excellent bar and delicious food. The hotel itself is a fun place to stay. Every time we went to the bar, it was very busy. Angel, the server, was more than friendly, very helpful and after going over the menu with us, made us change our minds about pizza. Hahaha. We ate at the bar and the food was delicious. The best focaccia bread I have ever had, and I order it all the time. Also make it at home. The Cesar salad made with shaved brussels sprouts was delicious. I never would have ordered that without the recommendation from Angel. The meatballs were very good, huge order. More than one person can eat. My husband had the fennel crusted salmon and it was delicious. Cooked to perfection. I just can't say enough about the place, Angel, or the food. read more

Oh, the Autograph Collection. I love these little hotels, as they always seem to embody the character of the location I'm visiting. The latest adventure with my husband was a road trip from Denver, CO to Houston, TX to help our son move into his new digs at Rice University. Our overnight stop was in Amarillo, TX and the Barfield seemed like the obvious place to stay. We stopped on the way down to Houston and back, one night each time. Our stop on the way down was an exceptional experience. The friendly valet kept our car close, should we need it (this hotel was in town, no real parking beyond street parking), and offered directions to various spots around town. Our son arrived ahead of us, and got the keys to both our rooms. After meeting him in the entry lobby, which was adorned with leather and cowhide furniture, we entered the elevator to find a quaint and unexpected example of historical preservation. The floor of the elevators sport an emblem of the Derringer Pistols which, as the story goes, the original developer, the "Duchess", carried in the early 1920's as protection. We went up to our rooms, and found that the team had upgraded my son's room so that we could have an adjoining room situation, with a door that opened between us. Given that this was one of the final days before I would be a true "empty nester", this was a treasured gesture. All was well in these nice rooms. The hotel team pointed us to our restaurant, Ohm's, just around the corner. What a fine restaurant, sure to be the subject of a separate review. Fast forward 5 days to our return stop at the Barfield. My Marriott profile contains a request for a room on an upper floor. Don't ask me why; it just seems like the views are better from above. I also always ask if there are any upgrades when I check into a hotel, especially if I'm a member of their loyalty program. After this 9 hour drive through the Texas heat (car said 112 degrees at one stop), I was told my room was on the 2nd floor, and my request for an upgrade, at least to a higher floor, was met with "we are full, and all the rooms are assigned". I thought about how I had checked in online right away when I received my check-in email. But it's just one night, and I'm tired. I took her word and ambled up to our second floor room. The view was worse than non-existent, with a bunch of machinery outside our window. Again, it's a bed for one night. Off we went to find dinner. We ended up at the lovely restaurant off the lobby, called Toscana. This also warrants its own review, especially as the experience brought the stars on this review from an abysmal 2 to an acceptable 3-star review. When we returned to our room after dinner, we started getting ready for bed and noted that the machinery outside our window was LOUD! TOO LOUD! Air conditioning for the entire building is my guess, but it was too dark to see now. OK, so I called down to ask if anything could be done about the noise, and they told me they could move me to another room. There had been a cancellation. Up to the 4th floor we go, 10:00pm with my husband in his robe and slippers--moving all suitcases, etc. The room was higher and quieter, and the staff told me several times that they were glad there was a cancellation. This room was not at the level that I paid for, and rather than admit this and refund me the difference, I had to go down and argue about this on my way out the door the next day. I did eventually get a reimbursement for the difference in room price, but the whole thing left a very bad taste in my mouth. I don't think they should be offering that room to anyone without divulging its pitfalls, and it should not be booked out at a regular rate. It was clear to me that the staff the next morning knew exactly which room I'd been in, and that they field frequent complaints. Marriott should pay closer attention to membership profiles and honor their members with more honest communication. I appreciate their reimbursement for the lower room category, and next time will ask more questions at the front desk before accepting my room. read more

Was super impressed with my stay at this hotel. From my perspective, it has three things really going for it. Number 1, it's just really nice. From the second you enter the lobby, you can tell thought and effort went into making this a nice and comfortable place to stay at. It's super clean and well put together. I saw someone complain about room size but unless you're trying to fit more than a couple of people in your room, I don't see this as an issue. And the spacious bathroom more than makes up for this. In fact, I want this bathroom at home! Number 2, the employees here are super nice, helpful, and full of personality. Number 3, location, location, location. You're situated on a cute old town street with plenty to see and experience. I've avoided Amarillo for work but will no longer do so.... I can't wait to go back and stay here! read more

We stopped in Amarillo for a night on a very long road trip out east and were excited to find this lovely dog friendly hotel in the heart of downtown. And while I expected it to be nice, I didn't think that I would like it as much as I did. I travel a ton and find most hotels to fall short. The Barfield, however, was completely on point. The pros: The decor is fabulous. It has just the right touch of Texas/the Southwest without being overkill. The Brizo bathroom fixtures and moody lighting were also nice touches. Overall, this hotel has quite the vibe. The proximity to fun restaurants and bars is fabulous. The area also seemed clean and safe and was very pleasant for a nighttime stroll with my greyhounds. Complimentary breakfast at the onsite restaurant for Bonvoy Platinum Elite members. You even get to choose what you'd like to order, which is great for those with dietary restrictions. The room seemed to have white noise or the ventilation system was tuned to a very pleasant sound. As someone who is sensitive to outside noise and usually travels with a white noise machine, this was a great feature to have included. The cons: The only downside was that the room could have been a bit cleaner. It looked like there may have been a couple of small dogs that marked the walls in the past. The shower also had some mold/mildew starting to grow that looked like it could have been easily cleaned off. Lastly, the freestanding closet/armoire needed a serious vacuuming underneath. In closing, I loved my experience at The Barfield and would stay here again in a heartbeat! read more

It was also a library for many years after being a bank and they've maintained that legacy by decorating with old books throughout. As someone who has traveled and stayed in numerous properties over the past 19 years, this Autograph Collection Marriott was not something to write home about. After reading several reviews and looking online at photos, I was excited for my stay at The Barfield. But once I got to my room, I was a bit let down. It had a huge bathroom but the room was incredible small. It appeared as if it lost a huge amount of space to a staffing closet or some such. To continue with the small details that I fussed over (yes, not something that should put anyone off) I disliked that I couldn't find a luggage rack. I had to put my suitcase on a chair and then left my other bags on the floor. That doesn't really scream Wow! to me. I always enjoy a nice coffee maker with different kcup pods to try and the ceramic mugs are a beautiful touch, but when I need to run out at 5am to start work, there's no to go cup. Why not? I'm glad I got to stay at The Barfield. I may try another stay here again in the future, but I'm hoping for a room that is in the pictures and not the small closet style room I ended up with. I also hope that a future stay will have a luggage rack and to go cups. As such, this is a beautiful property in the Autograph Collection. read more

I have stayed at the Barfield Amarillo several times, unfortunately. The overwhelming scent they disperse throughout the building gives me asthma, burning eyes, and a headache that does not go away until two days after I leave. I have brought the issue to their attention each time I have stayed there but the employees show an incredible lack of concern and just say that it is a corporate requirement (hiding behind policy). While most of the employees are very courteous and proactively offer assistance, the front desk employees are lacking in service and personality. They are unfriendly and make customers feel like we are an imposition on their time (with the exception of one lady who is very nice). This has been my experience each time I have stayed there. At checkout, my coworker and I waited while the desk clerk carried on a lengthy non-business related conversation with another employee (we know this because we could hear what they were saying). She knew we were there and completely ignored us. My coworker finally had to walk up to her and toss his room key on the counter since she was not going to help. I did the same and we left as we had a meeting to attend. She could not have cared less. Considering the room rates the Barfield charges, I would expect a much better experience and be treated better. I will not stay there again. I gave them several chances but they have blown it. read more

First and foremost the history and the ambience of this hotel is absolutely top notch! You will not be disappointed at all. Second, Marriott please take note of your staff and train your entire collection utilizing the process and procedures used to train the staff here. The moment you walk in you are met and welcomed. Everyone is there to ensure you feel welcomed and ensure your stay is perfect and above all memorable. The valet was so helpful and tended to us as if we were the only ones there. The front desk staff was efficient and got us into our room within minutes of us checking in. The room and its amenities are second to none. Not to mention just beautiful Now, saving the best for last... the restaurant.... WOW! We ordered pork chop with risotto and Brussel sprouts (a converted fan!! Yummy). Accompanied by the potato soup and a kale salad! AMAZING! We were a little embarrassed licking the plates!! Breakfast was absolutely perfect. The restaurant staff was attentive and super helpful answering our questions proudly of the history of the hotel!' Roller coaster review bare with me while I explain the 5* rating. A cross-country trip brought us to this nice hotel with a cool design. The décor throughout the building is lovely and gives the place a unique vibe. We were upgraded to a corner room which had some nice views of the city. After dropping off our bags we headed back out to grab dinner. Once we chose to call it a night and settle in we discovered a couple things (the previous occupants left a pair of underwear behind, definitely not my style otherwise maybe I have a souvenir lol, also left behind was a makeup compact mirror). Next the shower was out of shower gel but we were able to get a bottle brought to our room which was cool. By this time we were set to just call it a night since we had big day behind us and a bigger one ahead. In the morning we checked out and told the staff at the front desk how our stay went (dirty underwear and all). THIS IS WHY THEY DESERVE 5 STARS! The staff proceeded to apologize for the dirty room and the manager (I think was the manager) gave us a full refund and apologized again! At no point was it our intention to try to get out of paying for our night's stay, as mentioned we liked the hotel and the bed was super comfortable but the room had it's flaws. Overall, we enjoyed it here and would definitely recommend visiting as the customer service is AMAZING! read more

This is a beautiful hotel in Amarillo. The staff is very friendly and helpful. This is the second time staying there. The first time my room was spacious and had a little area where I can use my laptop and get my work done. The second time unfortunately, I did not have any space to use my laptop at all, so I had to go downstairs to work. They have couple nice restaurants and the speakeasy bar downstairs. I'll definitely stay there again, just make sure you ask for a room with a desk space if you need it to work. read more

Had a layover stay here on the way to Lubbock. Was very pleasantly surprised how nice this hotel stay was. Check in process was smooth and streamlined. Front desk staff were nice and helpful. Very professional. No problems with the reservation. The room exceeded my expectations. It was newly remodeled, great decor with excellent fixtures. Room was clean and tidy and well cared for. All room amenities as expected. Bathroom/Shower Stall, brand new and very clean. Plenty of bathroom space. Loved the sink countertop so much, may remodel our sink with them. The only drawbacks are the hotel restaurant online menu does not match the limited menu when you actually arrive. Will struggle to order here if you're a vegetarian. Other issue is arrived on a Sunday night and majority of the local restaurants and businesses around the hotel are closed on Sunday. It may be because we are from a bigger city, but even on Monday daytime, it was also pretty much dead. But this is definitely a little diamond in rough. Hubby had business in Lubbock, but was really disappointed with those hotel stays. Since this hotel was only 2hrs from Lubbock, he returned and drove back and forth in order to stay in a comfortable hotel. Would definitely recommend! read more

They get one star for location and because it's pretty, but it's a disorganized mess and the bare basics are not met. Too many issues to count... Our door didn't even lock. For the price we paid per night, our door should have locked. Saturday morning, it took my husband ten minutes of trying to pull the door tight to engage the lock. On the way out, we told the front desk lady - an older lady - that we could push it open without a key card. She said she'd have maintenance take care of it while we were gone during the day. When we got back - we tried walked into our room without using our key card to see if they fixed it. Nope! It was still easy to push open - no key card required. I went down to the front desk to get more towels because the shower floods the floor (beware), and I asked another staff member if maintenance was going to fix our door. She looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language and said, "I don't know anything about maintenance being scheduled to fix a door." She offered to send them up, but at that point I was over it. We'd been at a tournament all day and were exhausted. The last thing we needed was not to be able to relax in our room because someone is trying to fix our door. Now, here we sit in our room unable to go out to eat tonight because our room won't lock. The deadbolt won't turn from the inside either, so this little latch (seen in our photo) is all that keeps us safe. Remember me mentioning the shower? Water streams from the shower base to the floor, puddling the entire bathroom. That's a liability - an accident waiting to happen. And my allergies were off the chart. They were so bad it effected my breathing. This is a pet-friendly hotel which is great unless you're allergic. I love animals but certain breeds trigger my allergies pretty bad. I'm sure whoever stayed in this room before us had pets. The front staff should have given us a heads up. I certainly hope they keep some rooms free from dander for travelers without pets and allergy issues. They are three months old. I'm hoping they do better in the months to come, but we won't be back. We definitely did NOT get our money's worth. This hotel is NOT worth this price. I'm so disappointed in their service and functionality. I'd be better staying at a Holiday Inn ... at least there we'd get breakfast for free. read more

We left Houston, where we'd been without power for 4 days after Hurricane Beryl. The Barfield had come so highly recommended, my daughters (ages 6 and 9) were so excited about our stay. We drove the 9 hours to get there and were pretty exhausted when we arrived. The front desk could not originally find our room. Frustrated by the issue, one of the women banged away on the computer and was finally able to find it. When I explained my gratitude because "we had just driven 9 hours and hadn't had power for 4 days", she responded with an uninterested "Oh." One of SEVERAL times we were treated rudely and the customer service was poor. Thankfully, our room was spacious and clean and we enjoyed it. For the price, I would expect far more than a clean room. If you want to stay in an interesting place in downtown Amarillo, this is it. Restored prohibition era hotel , now a Marriott specialty property. Staff was pretty efficient. Not overly friendly, but okay. Loved the room. 5th floor corner room with lots of windows. Interesting furniture and comfortable beds. Bathroom was okay, though shower door design caused it to leak onto floor. Room felt clean, we did not have housekeeping during our brief stay. No complimentary breakfast at this " boutique," hotel. At their price range we expected a gourmet spread. We had room service instead. Oatmeal, pancakes, coffee. Not bad. The best feature, and one which we thoroughly enjoyed was the basement "Speakeasy". Invited my daughter and son in law to join us there. Comfortable area to sit and talk, great service and very good drinks. We enjoyed our stay, but felt like something special was missing. WOW! First of all to the people who wrote the first reviews about this hotel, they should never leave their house and go anywhere. Can't blame the hotel for 3rd party booking sites. The token $15 Valet parking fee is worth it. Considering we've paid upwards of $65 at other properties. Emma who checked us in did an outstanding job of welcoming us to this Autograph property. Since this is a brand new hotel with new employees, understand that many who are working here may not have had previous Hospitality experience. The property is still trying to fill vacant positions, and is still in the Honeymoon stage of operations. Hopefully when the lazy 'a' people decide to go back to work and those who are afraid to travel, will travel, then maybe this property will utilize all its features 7 days a week. Nice outside lounge on 2nd floor. Ample space for meetings. Enjoy a very good breakfast, reasonably priced and visit the Speakeasy on W-Sun. Free coffee available in bar area of lobby for those on a budget. Ask for Yazmin to be your server, very attentive to your needs. We look forward to revisit when traveling this way. read more

I'm good with most lodging facilities so long as they're clean, comfortable, and safe. Bonus points for good climate control and towels that are bigger than a high school gym's towel collection. By all means, the Barfield passes this basic test. But when a hotel promotes itself as being of a higher caliber than any of the typical hotels for business and pleasure travelers that you'll find along any interstate exit, the standard increases. Even more so at an elevated price point. And there's where the Barfield fails. We checked in via the Marriott app on Friday and the room was ready. There was a card in the room saying to leave the card on the bed if you wanted your linens changed sooner than three days and to leave towels you wanted replaced on the floor. Imagine our surprise when we returned to the room on Saturday evening to find an unmade bed, towels on the floor, and a full trash can. I went to the front desk and spoke to someone who I believe was the night manager. She told me that, due to COVID, we needed to request housekeeping service each day we wanted and that there was no housekeeping after 5 PM regardless. Interestingly, there were no other COVID restrictions or protocols in place. She said "the best she could do" was to have towels sent up. About thirty minutes later, we finally heard a knock at the door with towels. Sadly, the Barfield seems to follow the trend of a lot of newer trendy places -- high end prices, but without the high end service. read more

Lovely space. Poor service. Front desk folks looked like they slept in their clothes. No smiles or friendly greetings. Had a Sunday reservation. Arrived at 6:30 PM AND ROOM WAS NOT READY. Ate in the bar. Expensive menu for an urban setting. Insulting menu prices for Amarillo. Steaks were shown as Market Price. I asked the server what the price was for the 16 oz ribeye and she did not know! She came back and said $76bucks. Crazy. I asked her if the beef was choice or prime and she had no idea of what I was talking about. She came back and said Choice and I told that was ridiculous. I order the braised short ribs. I got a lump of meat with a horrid brown sauce on top. Utterly tasteless and not a short rib on the plate. It came with seasonal veggies that looked like they had been sitting on a steam table for two days. They were mushy and brown. And finally, when I order a meal I expect a napkin and silverware to be on the table before the food I served. The hotel tried for upscale and was barely mediocre. read more

Barfield hotel This is a hopping place on the weekend - at least on the weekend I went in mid February. "Sophistication" is the key word in much of the messaging going on inside the hotel. Sweet. I found the decor to be warm and cozy, even with the cowhide elevator panels and the intertwined pistols inscribed on the tile floors. There are bookcases filled with books everywhere. LOVE. There's a speakeasy in the basement with a secret door. FUN. On Saturday night we tried to get in to the restaurant for dinner but it was packed so we ate at the bar. The food, wine and service was great. I was able to easily get in to the restaurant for breakfast the next morning and again the food and service was great. The valet service was friendly and fast. There's a fridge in the room and snacks and drinks are available for purchase. There's a coffeemaker (very important to me since I don't function in the morning without it, even if it's not great coffee). There was a makeup mirror in the bathroom - such a helpful touch for us older folks with diminishing eyesight. The shower wasn't my favorite -it only had one temp - too freaking hot - and the enormous shower had an awkward uneven spray. Also, weirdly, I had a king size bed and my feet almost hung off the end - I'm almost 5'8 so not sure how taller people do in those beds. I had to call down for the WiFi info - why not just give it out at check in?? I appreciated the bedside plugs for my phone and laptop. I was on the 4th floor and street noise was pretty loud - emergency vehicles screaming by both nights. Overall, pretty comfortable and I'd stay there again. My only serious complaint was that I was called to come down to check in 3 different times after my assistant increased my stay from one to 2 nights after an unexpected flight change. The front desk staff were extremely challenged by this situation for some reason even though they kept assuring us they had the space. read more

The hotel is rather charming. Excellent staff and wonderful rooms. Arguably the best place to stay when staying in the city of Amarillo. Walking distance to some very fine dining. Only chink in the armor ? My pet peeve - Serving coffee with little plastic cups of crème. If you cant serve it properly ... , I don't wanna put it in my coffee :-) read more
