As far as chicken tacos go this place is...okay. The elote in a cup tasted like canned corn and the queso fresco (if you can call it that) tasted like feet. The rockfish taco tasted like a fish stick, super fishy and too much batter to fish ratio. The rice was overburdened by the bell peppers to where that's all you taste. Horchata is okay...pretty gritty even with stirring, but the flavors are fine. Chips and salsa are horrid. Chips are like salt less shrapnel. The love for this place isn't just hype. The tacos they serve up are well worth the five stars that (nearly) everyone has given them. Greeted immediately upon going inside, guy was friendly and explained how to order. I did have to remind the wife to exclude onions from her Big Papi, as she has a pathological hatred of the wonderful vegetables. The order screen is very well laid out, and easy to choose what you want/don't want. And it frees up the staff for doing the important work of bring me my taco! I went with the sole vegan opinion. Which was out of this world. I immediately wished I had ordered three or more. I will say that I do wish that they had more vegan/vegetarian options. We're very impressed with Big Papi's food. After two recent visits for carryout (no eat-in option), my esposa and I have developed a Big Papi's habit. The menu is not super long compared to a Tex-Mex restaurant, and your only option is carryout, but that's my entire list of complaints. Our first visit we were nearby, and put in an online order to try them out: a birria burrito, a couple of tacos - one shrimp and one rockfish, some beans and rice, queso & chips, and esquite loco street corn. It was all delicious, from the perfect corn tortillas to that ridiculously good corn, a creamy, buttery, pile of seasoned kernels. Yep, it wasn't too long before we had to return, this time driving all the way from home: a carne asada burrito bowl, more shrimp tacos, much more of that corn, and something called a quesabirria pizza, which I've never seen elsewhere but looked great in the photos. Wow. My wife, who is only a sometimes beef eater, was crazy about that "pizza", as was I. The closest I can come is to compare it with the best pot roast sandwich I've had, except better seasoned, nicely cheesy, and on a very tasty set of corn tortillas. It's also huge, so we ate off it for a few days. The various sauces were a great addition, not too spicy-hot for me, but well spiced. Many lime wedges added to the experience and freshness. The only meh note was the carne asada, which isn't bad, but can't compare with the birria beef. The counter folks were friendly and competent, and the order was ready when promised. The tacos were fantastic but I was not the biggest fan of the Mexican street corn, which if done right I am the biggest fan of. The queso was fine, seemed store bought to me but I could be wrong. I would have liked the corn to be grilled or cooked on skillet some for some charred taste/look and maybe some seasoning. I would guess that the corn was canned which is easier to make large quantities but tastes completely different from corn off the cob. Stopped at Big Papi's while in Frederick for an overnight trip and loved it! We could smell the food before we even stepped inside. We stayed in the shop and watched as they made everything, everyone was hustling and it was great to watch the process. All of the stuff we got was tasty. The street corn was a container full, more than I expected. The tacos come in 3s which is the perfect size. Tacos also had a lot of flavor. Ordering was easy and food was ready on time. The Birria tacos and the Birria Big Papi fries are my favorite items on the menu. But I also love the quesabirra which can feed a family of four. Give Big Papi's a try but definitely order ahead via online ordering. It's easy to do, but you don't have to wait too long. There is no indoor or outdoor dining in this establishment, so I recommend taking it for carry-out. Just wow. So damn delicious. I couldn't wait to eat the tacos so I decided to eat them in my car.
