I just wasted 5 days of my life with Big-O for what was originally a minor brake pad shrieking issue on my wife's 4 year-old, ~45k miles Nissan Altima. From this experience, I would never trust my car with Big-O in the future.
Here's a chronology of what happened:
June 3rd - I got my brakes checked out because they were shrieking. Big-O suggested that I needed new front brake pads. They also suggested I needed to take care of several other non-essential items. I just got the front brake pads replaced and rotors shaved down. It cost $290, which I thought this was pricey but they told me about their $50 groupon and that their work is gauranteed for a year.
June 6th - I took the car on the highway and noticed the car vibrated when I hit the brakes. I talked to my mechanic bro and he told me they probably shaved the rotors badly, and that it would probably need to be replaced. Fortunately, I had a warranty, I thought!
June 9th - I took the car back to Big-O and they said I needed new back rotors (based on lateral run-out measurements). I told them that it doesn't make any sense because this wasn't a problem before. I asked for the front lateral run out measurements, but they said the front was fine. I insisted and I got push-back, so I went home semi-defeated.
I called Big-O again from home and they offered to do a test-drive with me. I went there and after telling a technician the problem I was experiencing, he said "yes, I understand. The problem is the rear rotors." So I declined the test-drive and went to another shop to get a second opinion. The second shop diagnosed the problem to indeed be the front rotors!
June 10th - I relayed this information to Big-O and one of their technicians took me on a test-drive and showed me their run-out measurements (which I later learned wouldn't pick up on grooves and scoring left by a bad shaving job). Big-O basically convinced me the problem was on the rear. Big-O made me feel like I was wasting their time, which would be true if they were right.
I called the second mechanic to see why there could be this discrepancy in the diagnosis, and he told me that he actually replaced the rotors and test-drove the car on the highway to validate that the problem was the front rotors - I will now give him $50 for all that effort!
I called Big-O again. This time, Herbert offered to test-drive with me and said that if I replaced the front rotors and it fixed the problem, than it would be free (which is what I expect from a guarantee since that means they shaved down my rotors badly). If the problem lingered, I would have to pay for it.
June 13th - Herbert test-drove the car with me, and his assessment was again that the rear rotors would need to be replaced. I left unsure of what to believe. So I called another mechanic, and they said, "Are you sure it's coming from the back? We'll take a look, but this type of problem usually comes from the front."
After more consultations, I went back and I just said to replace the front rotors. The clerk tried to make me think I would still have to pay for parts even if the front brakes were the problem! Thankfully, Herbert stuck to the original guarantee. The mechanic changed the front rotors, and the vibrations were gone when I test-drove the car with Herbert! Herbert said, "it looks like you're getting your rotors for free."
I'm not sure if Big-O would have done right by their guarantee if not for Herbert. He is their saving grace and the reason they are even getting a star (that and it's not possible to give less).
I thought it was important to make this post to warn others. Also, it was humiliating for me to feel like the annoying stubborn customer since everyone at Big-O told me my rear rotors were the problem. I just wanted my wife's car fixed properly.
Not being a mechanic myself, I put my trust in mechanics to properly diagnose and fix issues. Unfortunately, it was misplaced trust this time, and I paid the price in the days I wasted, the stress, and the humiliation. read more
