Besides, for the next (insert the duration of your cruise here) days you'll be eating at the buffet a least once a day. No need to start Buffeting it up before you step foot on the Lido deck. That's what brought us to 5th Ave Bagelry. Located less than 1/2 mile from our hotel, it was an easy walk down the surprisingly un-busy streets of Long Beach, CA at 9:00 on a Thursday morning. 5th Ave Bagelry has A LOT of varieties of bagels. To put a number to it, about 25 different varieties of bagels, all made fresh on site daily. Add to that, 8 different flavours of cream cheese and you've got nearly endless bagel-and-cream-cheese options. To be fair, you're not limited to bagel & cream cheese. They also offer breakfast bagel sandwiches and non-breakfast bagel sandwiches and a few specialty items. Even though it was 9:00 in the morning I was tempted to try a pizza bagel but I resisted. The siren song of a jalapeño bagel with jalapeño cream cheese wins out every time. (This is a proven statistic. Just ask me.) They also offer an endless variety of coffees in just about every possible fashion (latte, espresso, iced, iced blended). Smoothies, juices, and soft drinks round out a very impressive selection of offerings. The staff at 5th Ave Bagelry appeared to be very focused. While they weren't swamped when we visited, they did have a steady influx of customers. It's an order-at-the-counter-and-we'll-call-your-number-when-it's-ready arrangement which seems to work well for them. All food is delivered in a paper bag. Our food delivery was about 10 minutes and everything was hot and accurate. My iced vanilla latte was exactly the go-juice I needed to jump start embarkation day. My jalapeño bagel with jalapeño cream cheese? Chef's kiss. I love jalapeño bagels that present a little spicy heat. The jalapeño cream cheese managed to round out my "Jim loves spicy food for breakfast" life choices. During our roughly 1/2 hour there I didn't see anyone come out from behind the counter to tidy up the dining room, which was needed. I'm assuming they had a pretty intense breakfast rush and just hadn't fully recovered yet, as one of the two trash bins was full. In a perfect world I'd be able to visit enough to try all of the bagels, but home isn't in Long Beach.

I actually rank every restaurant in comparison to my experiences at Heritage because I think Heritage is truly the gold standard for exceptional dining. So I have been so excited to try Olive and Rose! They have fun pool parties and different events throughout the week. And tonight they had a pottery decorating sgraffito class in the courtyard by the pool which was tons of fun! I saw they had braised octopus on the menu and had to try it. My single favorite bite of food was a scallop I had from Heritage so I know Chef Petty knows how to prepare seafood. The octopus was delicious. It was similar to Spanish octopus but topped with a bright salad green oil/sauce that gave it a different kick. This is probably my second favorite octopus in all of LA. I wish there was a bit more of the octopus itself, but it was still delicious. The beans and potatoes on the dish were great complements. The service is attentive and quick. You can eat inside or out on the patio, I opted for the latter since the clay pottery was outside. Either way is lovely. I definitely want to come back for more events! The only downside is parking is TOUGH. Be prepared to circle for a bit.

I placed a pickup order and it was ready in about 15 minutes. I stopped by around 1 PM, which seemed to be one of their busiest times. The employees looked super busy, and they may have been a little understaffed, but everyone was still friendly, calm, and professional. My food was ready first and the drinks came shortly after. Both the food and coffee were a solid 9/10 -- everything tasted fresh and delicious. It was definitely worth the wait. The only thing to keep in mind is parking. It appears to be mostly metered street parking, and I got lucky because the meter I parked at still had time left on it. Overall, great coffee, great food, and a really cute atmosphere. Looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu! (p.s I got Cookie Butter Latte, Carrot Cake Latte, Sunrise Sandwich, Almond Butter Toast, Caprese Melt)

I'm currently sitting here eating my sandwich while writing this review cause of how happy I am right now. We got the bagel sandwiches with bacon, one jalapeño bagel & one cheddar. I got the tres leches latte & i got my boyfriend the horchata latte (both $5.50). The tres leches latte definitely tastes like what you think it would, it was good but I would add cinnamon powder to enhance the flavor a bit more. The Horchata Latte was delicious! I definitely prefer the flavor of the Horchata a bit more but both are delicious. Either way, you HAVE to try Saints and Sinners. The owner said he's reaching out to Yelp to get the incorrect gluten free listing removed, which it seems has been done. With that in mind I updated my review from 1 to 3. While I appreciate that the misunderstanding may have been caused by Yelp, the customer service (when in the restaurant) could have been more respectful and not dismissive/judging. The yelp page says they have gluten free options but that isn't the case. They had no gluten free options and the employee working acted as though the question of gluten free options was ridiculous. We pointed out that the yelp page says they have gluten free and asked if that's charged, but they rudely responded and said they don't pay attention to yelp. Maybe they should pay attention.

I hate nothing more than to struggle bite my bagel. Here, you can assemble your own concoction or choose from a list of re-made options. I ordered the Desi ($11.75) simply because I was curious about the hollowed out bagel situation. I suppose this is the healthier of their options because it comes with egg whites. It also comes decked out with bacon, avocado, jalapeño, cream cheese + lemon pepper. I chose a Parmesan bagel as my vessel and it was a very tasty breakfast bagel. There were hints of lemon pepper which was an interesting flavor addition. For a more traditional breakfast bagel, Joe's Special ($10.50) was quite special. It's a bacon, egg, cheese, jalapeño cream cheese + lemon pepper breakfast bagel. This was a very solid breakfast bagel without the usual accompanying grease. Again with the lemon pepper lol. They also offer an extensive drink selection which I appreciate. I'll definitely be back to try their lunch bagels or to simply pick up bagels for home.

Since then the grilled Reuben has been my measuring stick for every restaurant that serves it. It's a must! It shows the attention to detail. It's not a sandwich you can rush. It requires its own time to caramelize and set the flavors up properly. Just like a house made soup, a Grilled Reuben can tell you a lot. And, it just happens to be my favorite sandwich of all time! So. High marks on the store itself. It has a very open air feel, lots of natural lighting, high ceilings and then a hidden court yard behind the shop. It's very clean with lots of colors and art. The music is perfect for the space. The menu is varied and they have both alcoholic drinks and non alcoholic drinks. It's a deli. And they absolutely fill the roll perfectly. And as anyone will tell you, who frequents any deli in the country. What matters is the food. Period. All the niceties mean nothing if the food distant stand up. So... how did they do? Meh. I've had worse. Much worse. I've also had much better. And understand his is my personal opinion. I'm well aware that my comments will not reflect the opinion of everyone. But, the corned beef. They do not cook it in house. It didn't appear to be a brisket although with it being shaved as thinly as it is I don't know if that would help. Brisket corned beer works best when it's nice thick beautiful cuts that break apart and melt in your mouth. But. As you can see in the picture, they don't grill the corned beef but they do pile it pretty darn high. Which is nice. The sauerkraut wasn't grilled. The rye wasn't roasted long enough so the Swiss didn't properly melt and set. Not enough Thousand Island dressing. The rye has the perfect texture and it helps to very nicely. An excellent Jewish rye! The pesto pasta salad was very nice. And it looked as if the other sides were made with an equal amount of attention and love. So high marks there. This is one of those tough reviews because the reality is the atmosphere, the staff and the location are all excellent. The sandwich needs some work. Remember that the Grilled Reuben is the ONLY TRUE American Sandwich. It was created from scratch for the 1942 World's Fair in New York City. It's an original! Treat it with the respect it deserves. And this three star sandwich... of all sandwiches is a hard pass. Sorry. But, if you would ever like to have me come into your restaurant and show you how to serve the best Reuben of your life... just invite me back. I'd love to show you how to make some simple tweaks and turn a meh into a don't miss!
