ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! My husband and I rode the motorcycle here with other friends for a day ride. We traveled from Denver, CO. We ordered the T-bone steak. It was so good!!! It was seasoned perfectly! I needed no sauce and that's the first time. That was the best steak I've ever had at a restaurant and I've been to a lot of them. I highly recommend visiting this place if you're in Bird City or even if you are a few hours away - take a day trip and have dinner there. It's worth it! And the customer service was outstanding. Big Ed's is a steakhouse in a small town in Kansas. Bird City has a population of about 200 people, so this restaurant is a big deal to the community and the towns surrounding it. Something to keep in mind is that Big Ed's does not accept credit cards or debit cards. I went with family and pretty much all of them live in Bird City. One of them told me that many nights you can go into Big Ed's and not know anyone and you'll see a bunch of Nebraska plated cars and trucks parked in front of the building. It's nothing fancy, but the place is a definite draw. The atmosphere is pretty entertaining. This place clearly hasn't remodeled in awhile and that is part of its charm. It's got farm posters up on the walls along with deer heads. The place has a high ceiling and the place is kind of dimly lit, but its still easy to see. It's just a large dining room. Tables and chairs are nothing fancy. It does have an open kitchen to it so you can see them grilling the steaks. Given that just a handful of people were working, they did a great job keeping up with a Thursday night crowd of about 75 people. Service wasn't amazing, but it was solid. We ordered some mountain oysters as an appetizer. This was the first time I ate one. If you don't know, mountain oysters are sliced cow balls that are fried. They taste like chicken and batter and are chewy, but not too bad. I ordered the New York Strip - medium. We had a bit of a wait for the food, but not terrible. I know it's busier on Friday and Saturday nights. I think this place is worth the wait though. By the way, steaks run $19-$25. The steak was great! It was a solid cut of meat cooked to perfection. The size actually was a little larger than what I thought it would be event though they give you the sizes. I've had a lot of good steaks in the past year and a half and this one ranks in my top 5. The roll that came with the meal was nice and soft. The salad was really just a bunch of iceberg lettuce tossed on the plate with the steak, roll and choice of potato. I had fries, but the wedges looked good. The thing I liked about the fries though is that they could soak up the steak juice, which made them taste awesome. Based on the menu, baked potatoes are only offered Fridays and Saturdays. This was a great small town dining experience. Be prepared to relax, hang out and enjoy the conversation. And don't forget to bring cash. read more

We got seated later and immediately waited on. 24 ounce T-bone was awesome, I usually salt my medium rare steak but with the rub they put on didn't require it. It would give this 3.5 stars, but I can't, so I went to 3. I traveled quite a ways to get here (an hour driving) to try their steak that my friend recommended. We ended up waiting for our food for about 2 hours or a little less because it was sooo busy. They like to cook their steaks in batches, so we basically waited through 3 batches until we got ours. Decor: Since it was so busy, it was very noisy but it added to the feel. It's your average pub/sports bar looking place with animals on the wall and sports on the TV. The place is pretty well-kept and clean though. Service: I don't know why, but it seems to be run by females on the outside (the waitress, griller, bartender), which I though was really cool. Our waitress was nice enough and kept our waters filled. Food: They only have prime ribs on Friday and Saturday and even though it was a Friday night, they had run out (it was like 7 PM when we had arrived) All of the entrees come with a salad and some sort of potato (fries, baked, wedges) and a roll that that comes WITH your steak at the same time. So we were empty-tabled for .... 2 hours. BUT: - Rib-Eye: I got medium rare and it was cooked to just about that (though I would have liked it a bitttt more rare). But it was nicely sized and I loved the charred ends of the piece and the tenderness of the middle. Very nicely done, though not the best I've had in my life. - Bread roll: very yummy, I thought. It was soft and fluffy - Salad: average - Baked potato: average. It comes with sour cream. Bottom Line: I wish I could have avoided the wait. I think it only tasted THAT much better because I was STARVING. But it's a good ol' piece of meat, so try it out if you're around!! read more

With family north of the state line in Benkelman we're always looking for different places to eat in the area when visiting. We'd been to Big Ed's in the past a few times but it had been several years since we tried it last. That's because the Skyline Grill opened in Benkelman that supposedly drew away the cook who made Big Ed's so good. Also because OF the Skyline grill, which got off to a great start but now has evolved to a diner with steaks in a nice building. But to digress... you'll still get a good steak and no frills dinner here for about $10 less than you'd pay in a bigger town for the same (or better) quality. Plus the steaks are all really big. My 6'5" 275 lb brother couldn't finish his, but made two nice sandwiches from the doggie bag the next day. Sides are pretty average, service is adequate and it's not fine dining but pretty good whether you're passing through or in the area for awhile and need some variety. If you haven't been try it, if you have but haven't been back in awhile try it again. read more

A local owned small town steakhouse in an old store front building downtown. Nothing fancy just great well prepared steaks and other items. I had the 12 oz. Ribeye that had a really nice sear on the outside and cooked perfectly medium rare inside. No steak sauce needed! Their seasonings are just right. We arrive at opening at 5:00 PM and within 45 minutes there were no empty tables. I highly recommend this out of the way restaurant. The waitress was perfect with service as needed or wanted without being overly attentive. read more

Took 30 minutes to get a waitress to take our order. She only came to our table once to see if we needed anything to drink. Steak and hamburger were cold when food did arrive. Fries were hot tho. The atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a Midwestern steak joint and bar which is about the only reason I'd return. However, you could make a better steak at home. I've been disappointed by the food both times I've been there. I've had a sirloin and ribeye (they were out of ribeye the first time). It was cooked to a great medium rare as per my request yet the steak was severely lacking anything to make me believe it was worth the $20+. Every steak is roughly $8-10 overpriced and the appetizers aren't portioned to fit their high cost. Beer is about the only think you won't overspend on. Perhaps the worst part of the experience is the service. From arrival to being served food is at a minimum a one hour wait and that's when it's slower. The second time I went they were packed yet they only had a handful of waitresses and servers and I was never asked once if I needed a refill of water (which I desperately did). I'd hate to lead anyone to believe the food is bad. My main concern is the wait and the price. (Tip to Big Ed's: Serve salad before the meal like every other restaurant ever). So if you're willing to fork out $25 for a good sized steak and want the Midwestern steak place atmosphere then I'd recommend it. But if you don't want your wallet to hurt after then I'd say stay away. read more

I have had many steaks over my 50+ years but Big Ed's is one of the top steaks I've ever eaten. Get the 16 oz Filet or 20 oz Ribeye (we had both) and we were amazed at the tenderness and flavor. You can tell it's never been frozen and cut fresh. And the added flavor by the cook really brings out the steaks true flavor. Oh yeah, and I read an old review that said they only take cash. Not true any more. Your plastic will work here but don't expect the hefty tab you would get at a Ruth Chris....very affordable for the quality and quantity you receive. read more

First off it you are looking to drink cold beer, call ahead 30 min in the winter time and have them set your beer outside in advance so it's cold. If you are looking to have more than one drink, drink slow the waitress will be in no hurry getting you new ones. The steaks are always typically very well cook and cuts.
