My husband and I both recently had appointments here and Alex really made our experience great! He was able to schedule me with Dr. Schrenzel right away, and I had my appointment 48 hours later. Dr. Schrenzel was really knowledgeable and performed an extremely thorough exam. Alex gave us both multiple options afterward for Frames/Lenses that would work with our insurance- gave excellent opinions on frame styles but also didn't hover while we were trying to select frames that we liked from the wall. There ended up being an issue with one of my husband's lenses while it was being made, and Alex was super communicative about the issue, he reached out to us and gave us an updated time estimate, and went out of his way to make sure that we got the pair ASAP by sending the new lens to another Big City lab that had immediate availability to grind it. I sent my wife for an in-network wellness vision-exam which included the contact lens exam at no extra cost. It is covered within my plan by my insurance provider. However, the new hire Domenique decided to confuse my wife and tried to bill her as out-of-network ($150) for a contact lens exam which was already covered within my insurance allowance. This is in addition to the wellness vision exam which was charged to my insurance provider. In all a very bad experience where the optometrist (Dr. Schranzel) and the front-desk together decided to fool an unsuspecting customer by charging an out-of-network fees while being an in-network provider. It is completely unethical of a NorthShore practice. Buyer BEWARE of this BIG City retail practice in NorthShore. read more

Had a good experience shopping here, and was told glasses would be ready in "about a week." When I called after 10 (business) days asking where the glasses were, I was told they take two weeks. So only 2 stars for deliberately giving incorrect information. read more

My wife and I had a great experience with Big City Optical and dealing with Dr. Richard Schrenzel and staff was a pleasure. We were well looked after, got great treatment and advice including something I had never considered, which is buying prescription sunglasses. This place is great! I went thinking I would just get an eyeglasses exam since it's easier to perfect one's vision with glasses if you need multi focal lenses, but decided to also get evaluated for contact lenses to see what would happen since the ones I currently wear are suboptimal (I am nearsightedness with an astigmatism in one eye and now need reading glasses). Dr Patel had me try on various contacts until we found a pair that improved my ability to see comfortably and function while just using contacts for near, far, and desktop distances! I am so happy! I prefer contacts for convenience and am glad to have found a prescription and brand that work! Also, the office staff were very helpful and friendly.. I would highly recommend this place read more

This doctor is wonderful. In an era of industrialized medicine, he is the opposite. My wife is his patient, not me (yet). But when I scratched my cornea on this Saturday after hours, he came into the office and met with me. I thought he would rush through things, but instead he took the time to properly diagnose the issue and offer solutions. I cannot overstate how terrific he is. read more

I have been a patient of Dr Schrenzel for a very long time and went to Big City to get my eye exam on April 2021 , the exam went well but buying glasses from them didn't , i purchased one pair for frames with lenses and gave them another pair of frames for them to put new safety lenses in ,i was very specific on what type and my prescription is very ordinary, i do understand that business must make money, and i will pay for good services Some thing i didn't like 1: Demands full payment of product , before it is delivered 2: Prices seem very very high for their products to me 3: Long wait time to get glasses (1-2 weeks), is it the virus for the delay perhaps but sending the glasses out of state to be made doesn't speed things up 4: Office people working don't care , gave me a cloth tub for the expensive frames with their name it, and only gave the leather case after i asked for it , my safety did come with the wrong lenses in them , and mistakes do happen, i was told to wait another 2 weeks (one month) for my glasses, after i cancelled my order for these glasses the time went down I prefer to give my business to someone else , i hope that i don't have to get my other lenses changed if scratched under there warranty -- Another 2 weeks ? don't know read more

I have an unusual eye condition and need special contacts. Always liked Dr. Schrenzel - years ago, (As Plaza del Lago Eye Center) he meticulously diagnosed the problem and found an adequate solution. I've been grateful and stayed with him for years as a result. Went in today for a new pair of the same (very expensive) contacts and they charged me a "discounted fitting fee" of $400 (discounted from $550!) in addition to $150 or so for the usual eye exam. These are the same contacts I've bought from them many times over the last 15 years - no changes. Certainly no need to "fit" anything. I already know how they fit. Complaining to the office manager got me nowhere. After reading my original yelp review, however, one of the owners of BCO called to discuss the situation. Although they ultimately corrected an unrelated over-charge in the bill, they let the fitting fee stand, admitting only that the fitting fee policy for repeat customers needed to be "reviewed." Bottom line - Dr. Schrenzel is a good person and a competent physician, but BCO is still working out the kinks. Buyer beware! Do your homework and ask questions in advance. Make sure you know what you're being charged for before they run your card.. read more

Now desperately seeking someone in the area to see on a moment's notice before my son leaves for college and I am realizing that Dr, Schrenzel is really one of the very best around. Most others around either have many bad reviews or are so totally unavailable by phone and difficult to book an appointment with. My family and I are recent patients of Dr. Richard Schrenzel at Plaza Del Lago Vision Center. I am really impressed with his thoroughness, attention to detail and highly technical medical equipment to conduct accurate eye examinations. Furthermore, I was out of town for a business trip when my four year old daughter had an eye infection. Her pediatrician's office dismissed it as a viral infection causing swelling to her eyes. However, the condition of her eyes worsened and in desperation while being on the other side of the country, I called Dr. Schrenzel's office after business hours. He left an after hours phone number to contact him in an emergency. I called him on his personal phone and described my daughter's condition of her eyes at the time, where he asked that I bring her in as soon as possible and offered to go back to reopen his office to meet that same night to see her when he was already at home with his family. My husband stated that Dr. Schrenzel performed a thorough eye exam on our daughter to conclude with an acute bacterial conjunctivitis diagnosis. He prescribed antibiotics that began to improve my daughter's eye infection as early as the next morning. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Schrenzel for helping to heal my daughter and going out of his way to do so. He exhibits compassion and professionalism that makes him stand out from the rest. His assistant, Gail is also very helpful and friendly. She spent a lot of time with me to find the right frames for my very first pair of eyeglasses as I tend to be a very indecisive shopper. I had serious eye injuries as a young man. I went to a myriad of optometrists in my life-time. I am a theoretical scientist, and I know excellence when I encounter excellence. Doc Schrenzel is the very finest eye analyst that I have ever met. He is thorough, has excellent diagnostic tools and outstanding communication skills, and is a highly-experienced expert--he is passionate about vision. He leaves no stone uncovered until he gets the answer correct. He diagnosed my condition, sent me to his affiliated physician expert for confirmation, and the end result is that he restored my vision. His disposition is friendly, his administrator Gail is sweet and professional, there is plenty of free parking by his office, and his office is easy to find.
