Plenty of parking and next to the historic district

Great fried chicken is the ticket at this local drive-in. Not a heavy coating--here you taste the chicken and not the spices. Solid wings too. What more do you want? Always busy at lunch time but worth the wait.

Just a step up from a little stand on the side of the road

Every year, the Demosthenian Literary Society at the University of Georgia makes a pilgrimage to the home of one of its most prominent alumni, General, Congressman, and Senator Robert Toombs. Toombs' antebellum mansion is just a few houses down from this Washington institution, and thus the Big Chick has also become part of this UGA tradition. With such delights on the menu as a side of "O A" and "Pot & Mac Saad" and chicken "brest," you know the Big Chick is one of those special institutions that can only exist in a small town. You're guaranteed a win with pretty much anything that can be cooked in a deep fryer. The fried chicken on the bone is delicious and definitely among the best fast food chicken. The fries are better than average, and tossed in seasoning salt for a little extra flavor. The cornballs were awesome -basically little breaded scoops of creamed corn (think hushpuppies on corn steroids). Though we scoffed at the few in our group that ordered hamburgers, when they unwrapped their burgers at the nearby park benches we were silenced. These burgers were massive and obviously homemade, no premade patties here. Minus a couple of stars for being out of white meat, gizzards, livers, and okra as well as the slightly curt service. But I guess not many people go to a glorified roadside stand like the Big Chick for five star service... But still, it's worth a visit, as is the beautiful Robert Toombs House just up the road, open for tours Wednesday-Sunday.

Stopped here while passing through. Great food at a really good price. The 3 ladies who waited on us were very friendly.
