Best kept secret down this stretch of the South might just be Peggy's fried chicken. Now, a great many places have the confidence to fry a bird. That is not the same as knowing what they're doing. Plenty can make chicken hot. Fewer can make it memorable. Peggy's managed the rarer thing. This was the kind of fried chicken that makes a man quiet for a minute and reconsider whether he has properly valued his past blessings. They had other meats on the menu, and I do not doubt they were prepared by decent people with honest intentions, but ordering anything besides the fried chicken would have felt like showing up at a revival and asking for directions to a yoga class. And the sides, Lord help me, the sides were no afterthought. If I had not attended the funerals myself, I might have suspected my great grandma, grandma, and momma were back there in the kitchen, keeping an eye on the pots. Forgive me, Mammaw G, Mammaw, and Mom, but Peggy's had the better day with that chicken. I say that with love, respect, and a willingness to dodge a lightning bolt if one has been set aside for me. Fried okra, green beans, sweet potatoes, and mac and cheese, which any Southerner with good sense knows is a vegetable when it needs to be, spread across our plates like a family reunion of the righteous. The only medical advisory I'd offer is this: if your doctor has warned you against coating your insides with salt, you may want to admire from a respectful distance. And the sweet tea was right. Not tea-flavored water with ambition. Sweet tea. Properly made. The sort that lets you know nobody in the building is interested in modern nonsense. Next time I'm rolling down I-20, I may well make the turn toward Wrens again just to see whether Peggy's can do it twice. But judging by the regulars, the handshakes, the easy way the staff knew folks by name, and the fact they made us feel halfway local ourselves, I'd say this was no one-off. Just passing through town,coming from to Lawrenceville Ga. by way of New York, I stopped a local and he referred Peggy's. My grandson and I were hungry so we scurried over to get a place to go because they close at 8:30. We were kindly greeted and informed that the cooks have left the building but they had buffet style. The server came out and prepared our to go plates with care. We ordered sweet ice teas, had great conversation and I'm out merry way. I had Chuck beef over rice, candied yams, lima beens and a biscuit. OMG the food was as it should be, comfort food. Every bite was delicious and that biscuit melted in my mouth. The ice tea was perfectly crafted. My grandson had fried chicken in Mac n Cheese. He didn't expound in its taste but he gobbled it up with no complaints. I would say that he enjoyed it. I know the locals enjoy this restaurant because it seems like Peggy's is a staple in the community. It's too bad that I won't be back here but I am glad that I supported this restaurant rather than going to a fast food that's close by. There were 18 of us coming from a trip to Pennsylvania. Bus driver brought us to Peggy's restaurant. The entire staff was most welcoming, the generous portions of real southern cooking was absolutely delicious, the service was spot on, the price was extremely reasonable. Soul food with a smile! Fried chicken was to die for. I initially got the small dinner plate, which only came with one breast. It was so good, that I ended up going back through the line to order two additional pieces. First of all, I will admit if you first drove by you may be inclined to keep driving. But don't. This is a small town, locally owned restaurant that serves wonderful food. Because we came at lunch time, it was VERY busy! The line to order was quite long. You order your food with one or two meats and then vegetables. I thought I ordered a large plate. I chose their fried chicken, scoop (huge by the way) of green beans, boiled cabbage and butter beans. The fried chicken. First the meat was hot and juicy! The skin had an absolute crunchy and delicious flavoring. Not sure how they made it but delicious! Green beans were as expected. I love boiled cabbage and this was done perfectly. The BEST part of the lunch were the butter beans. Oh my gosh. I never had them before, but will again. The ambiance of the restaurant is hustling and bustling. It is a noisy cafe type of place. Many people who work, come here for lunch to eat or take out. They have enough parking for the seating size, but we had to park off the road because we all came at once. We were seating in the back larger room and the owner stopped in and asked how we were enjoying the meal. I am surprised at how fast they can serve people with such a large bunch. We were also not given food tickets as you just told them what you had when you went to pay. I saw everyone hustling here. From the cooks, the servers, to those cleaning the tables. Peggy's is a popular local joint in rural Wrens, Georgia. It is pretty highly rated, so we wanted to check it out for breakfast because that's our jam. Parking is a bit tight and we got there a little before eight on a Saturday, but traffic picked up shortly after we arrived. We seated ourselves and our orders were taken promptly, drinks brought promptly, and food came out in a timely manner. The omelette was good, and I would rate it more at a 4/5. I'll add that the ham was cooked prior to going into the omelette and that made a marked difference for flavor. The hot cakes were maybe average for flavor but my husband really liked the syrup. He was not a fan of the biscuit, for which he had high hopes. Not only was the biscuit room temp, it was quite dense and seemed like it might have been frozen prior to cooking. I got the grits and toast, and I was very pleased with the toast even if the bread was your basic loaf type - the butter was done so well you hardly noticed the bread. I found the grits to be passable, perhaps overly buttered (I know that sounds wild coming from someone born in Mississippi) but maybe slightly too thick. I have had worse grits, but I did not finish these. My husband generally likes his bacon cooked crispy, but this was on the edge of too done. The house coffee was great - no complaints on flavor at all and I'd have given it a 4/5. I asked if there was spinach or anything we could add to the omelette but that was a negative. You get the basics for coffee as well, so if you need the schmancy hazelnut creamer or you are lactose intolerant, this may not be the place. I am guessing the lunch and brunch game here is a bit bigger, but for breakfast it's about midrange. It's a good local option. Also, there is a charge for card use at this business. read more

We were trying to find a little mom and pop place to have some breakfast and we happened upon this little place.. WOW! The breakfast was amazing! Perfect grits, perfect eggs, perfect bacon, super crispy! It was all spot on delicious! They also have a lunch deal that had fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese etc... all the southern favorites.. we didn't get to partake in the lunch but it had to be amazing because the smells and line out the door spoke for itself!
