Big Boss Hotlinks chicken teriyaki basket accompanied by a pint of Brew Lab 101 stout.
    Rok J.

I hit up the Big Boss Hotlinks food truck for the Sunday chicken teriyaki special at the Brew Lab 101 location in Rio Rancho. Very friendly & personable owner delivered the meal into the Brew Lab bar. Good service. Checkerboard paper lined basket cradled a generous pile of chicken thigh strips well drenched in teriyaki sauce riding atop a good size scoop of rice & salad with ginger dressing. Thigh meat was extremely tender & juicy. Teriyaki sauce was punchy with ginger & soy sauce saltiness countering a quite sweet front end flavor. Salad was shredded iceberg lettuce. Partial demerit for not blinging up the visuals with contrasting color ingredients (think julienne carrots, red cabbage, red lettuce, cucumber, etc). Ginger dressing was good, but not earth shatteringly different or complex from such coverage typically found in any number of Oriental eateries. Partial demerit for the rice arriving a bit drier than I'd expect. Maybe a good thing to better soak up the tasty teriyaki sauce, but to me a small disappointment. Rice is so neutral tasting (vis-a-vis the strength of meaty, roasty, or spiced/herbed flavors) that it's texture rises in importance. Thus, this rice was a bit off the mark. I went specifically to get the chicken teriyaki special today. It was the raison d'etre for my trip out, so Big Boss sandwiches were not even on the radar in spite of online pics of the BBH menu showing them roughly in the $10 range. So I was mildly surprised at the $15 ticket for the teriyaki basket, a hair over $16 after tax. Maybe I haven't eaten teriyaki in too long, but the price point felt a few bucks north of what a chicken teriyaki lunch has flown at for me historically, in spite of the high quality & generous portions of the food itself. Next BBH round I'm aiming to try the sandwiches since they not only look hyper tasty, but also fall closer to my frugal lunch pricing schedule.

I got the smaller portion cause this is always just enough for one. Tried this place at a BrewLab event and have been back 3 times just for this food truck! Absolutely love the owner and his customer service. He takes great care of his customers, and you can tell he takes pride in his food. Give this spot a chance, you won't be disappointed!

I decided to try this place after seeing it on Facebook and since it's so close to me. I was not disappointed. My friend got the St. Helen's bowl and I got sandwich. This is a lot of food. The sandwich was big and I had to squish it to fit in my mouth. My friend loved her bowl and even had a little leftover. It was super yummy and I will go again. They are at the Brew Lab on Southern Tues-Sun. And I hear there is a teriyaki chicken special every Sunday that I plan to try next.

Food: 4.5 We tried a variety of dishes that were all delicious. They had good balance of flavor and texture and do have a slight kick to them. Our favorites include the pork belly, aguacate frito, manchego frito, berenjenas, and gambas. Other dishes that we have tried include patatas bravas, shrimp ceviche, scallops, green chile chicken empanada, paella, lamb chops, and la mula (ribeye). The desserts that we tried were all delicious. Our favorites were the cheesecake empanada and crema catalan. Some of the dishes are a little expensive for the size and quality. For example, the scallops were tasty but unevenly sized with ones that appeared to be in a different size classes from others. Service: 3 I hate to take away points for service as our server was so kind and patient with our large group. Some dishes took very long to come out. They also appeared a little disorganized and some of our dishes/drinks were forgotten until they were reminded. To be fair though, we had a large group and ordered several times throughout the course of our meal which could have led to this confusion by the kitchen. Ambiance: 5 Mulas is a beautiful restaurant. I like how it feels very bright, airy, and open. There is also a nice outdoor seating area with live music. This would be the perfect place for a date night or drinks/tapas with friends.

I went to brunch on Sunday with a couple friends. It was my first time there, but my friends go…read moresomewhat often and they told me that Mula's must have been having an off day because they always have a better experience than we did. We were seated outside directly in front of the live performer's soundbar. It was nearly impossible to hear each other. There was a large birthday party behind us which made it even harder to hear. We asked to sit inside but were told there weren't enough servers. We ordered mimosas and were told there was no Prosecco. The server didn't offer any other options or alternatives. She was gone for a long time before coming back to take our food order. Two of us ordered carne asada tacos and were told there was no carne asada. I opted for the shrimp tacos, but my friend wanted chicken tacos and asked if it was breast meat or meat off the bone. The server didn't know. She didn't offer to find out. After a few seconds of awkward silence I asked her if she could ask the kitchen about the meat. She said yes and then came back to tell us it was white meat. Perfect. After placing our order, it took a while for the food to come. The live music was nice, but it was a bit too loud and we loved when the artist took a break. When the food arrived, I was surprised by the small portion sizes. I asked for a side of limes and my friend asked for lemon for her water. We got a whole lime sliced, but no lemon. The server eventually brought the lemon and said she couldn't hear the request over the music. It took a long time to get the check. We weren't offered dessert menus which was disappointing, but by that time we were ready to get away from the party people who had sung happy birthday twice and the performer had also sung happy birthday a couple times. It was a lot. The food was good. The outdoor space was nice. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back though. They need to work on their pricing. $19 for three tacos with no sides is insane. I live in DC and unless you order tacos à la carte, the plates come with rice and beans. And even then, an à la carte taco is like $4-5. The shrimp tacos were good, but $15-16 would be a more reasonable price with no sides. I actually left hungry and ended up grabbing a bite to eat on my way home.

I had a hash skillet with sausage and my daughter had the crab cake Benedict. The food was ok. The poached egg was over cooked and not runny. My skillet was fine but it was not hot. I could even touch the skillet. Our food was not hot. You can see the cheese melted then hardened from sitting. In addition the food was dry. My skillet came with an English muffin with no butter or jelly. I had to ask and they gave me 2 packets of strawberry jelly. I was disappointed they didn't offer or give me any choice. The service was just ok. They were quick to take our order and bring the food but didn't offer to refill our drinks or even water. It cost too much for what you get, mediocre food & service.
