Me and my sister wanted to try something new close to Rio Rancho so we headed out to Perea's in Corrales. Driving into Corrales is so peaceful by the way. Right when we arrived we were greeted by 2 lovely ladies who asked us if we wanted to sit indoors or out in the patio. Since it was relatively hot that day we opted to sit inside. My sister ordered the Posole that day but was told later that they were out so she ended up only having a coffee and some Biscochitos which she said were good. For me the choice was a little tougher since I'm way more picky with my food. The menu didn't have too much that was appealing to me so I went with the Chicken Enchilada Casserole. While we waited they brought out some chips with a mild tomato based salsa that was OK but the real winner was another salsa that one of the gals brought me on the side. That green salsa was hot and delicious just needed a tad more salt. I finally got my entree. The plate was super small - smaller than any plate I have ever gotten at any restaurant ever. Probably a little bigger than the plate you get your toast on at a breakfast restaurant but I digress. The Enchiladas were OK but what was really delicious were the calabacitas with corn and the side of beans. So much good flavor. The sopaipillas were OK too. Not the best I've had but definitely not the worse. Overall it was an interesting lunch spot and the staff was super friendly read more

Perea's is a family owned staple of the Corrales community with authentic New Mexican food. The building is super cool, original adobe- the kind where you can tell there are ghosts in the walls. All the waitresses are super nice, the food was great and came out super quick. Ooogly Googly we all got ... OMGEE :) We asked if we could buy a bottle, he only had 5 total and sold us two of them (without marking them up) for $90 each. Today I see some shops requesting prices of $330 - $400ea. Regardless ... we had so much fun trying to predict who would open their bottle first, so we could visit their house and sample it :)) I am determined to show up here on a rented Mule/Burrow/Donkey like transport, and tie up out front to the hitching post. This will be the right way to enter and the proper way to exit this historic and wonderful establishment. We are lucky to experience this wonderful gem of a place in beautiful ABQ ... and I hear they sometimes open at 10am ... so Hannah and Nates for Breakfast, then walk nearby to rent a form of animal transport identified above ... then waddle, clop or other to the bar at 10am. My wife and I decided to check out Perea's Tijuana Bar one Saturday. We'd heard about it and wanted to try something different in Corrales. We had a wonderful time. Perea's Tijuana Bar is what I would call old New Mexican in cuisine as well as atmosphere. The service was great. There were boxes and things like that around, but we both got the feeling that they were short on space, so they made do with what they had. I will say that the portion sizes were somewhat smaller than we're used to when going to other eateries in the Albuquerque area. Still this is a nice place to eat at and enjoy. read more

A must place to eat in Corrales...the best true New Mexican homemade cuisine in the ABQ metro area. The stuff sopapilla is amazing...with green or red, it's all good! And of course, the Huevos rancheros is a staple. Don't forget to ask for the garnish (lettuce & tomatoes) to round out your selection...and what the hay, add the onions & sour cream too! All entries are served with sopapillas or homage tortilla (both are fantastic). A local favorite for generations. The owner, John is inviting and personal. Not recommended for food. Service was terrible, the waitstaff seemed annoyed by any questions. The ambiance was seriously lacking. We sat surrounded by bottles of alcohol in the dining room. The salsa tasted like spicy ketchup, the green chile cheese burger had no green chile and wasn't warm enough to melt the cheese. Frito pie was cold, and the posole was flavorless and just looked like hominy in water. Seeing our frustration, the owner kindly comped our ticket. read more

This is a nice Cantina that has a relaxing patio. The drinks of "Double" Tequila Margaritas were tasty and not strong. Next time I'll have to ask for a triple..:) The food including green chili cheese burger was perfectly cooked and delicious. The green chili packed a little punch (someday I hope I can find one to bloody "knock me out"..:) The beef tacos were filled with plenty of juicy beef. All the normal accompaniments were there. The salsa was too tame for this wild Cockney..:) We ordered and received a decent size side of "homemade" tasty guacamole. I would only ask our hostess/waitress, to please tone down her loquaciousness, though pleasant she was. This was a most excellent stop after walkin 7 miles down and around the Corrales Canals. Been trying to get here for awhile now and finally came when they were open. We didn't get there in time to eat but did hang out in the bar and had some really good drinks. John Perea, owner of Perea's Tijuana Bar, is the ultimate bar-owner gentleman who'd be cast in a movie set in the classic 1950's. He knows every customer's name and drink order by heart; knows the recent medical scare the older man at the corner bar stool had 2 days ago, and would welcome 1st-timers to his establishment with an on-the-house bottle of limited-edition Marble brew, if after some conversation he discovered that's your beverage of choice We were meandering through our little Village on a windy bike and wine tour when we last-minute decided to ride by Perea's to see if the "gates were open". To our great fortune, they were! (Note to the wise: the posted hours are a suggestion, definitely open at those times, but John, the gentleman, will stay open for the local peeps to continue their conversations and libations into the evening hours...) We were welcomed to a beautiful adobe building with heaters a-roaring and a bar top slightly too tall for our stools (just the way we like it) and the kindest staff you could find, very proud of their boss, Mr. John Perea. We all ordered frito pies, sopapillas, and tortillas (all homemade from scratch, as well as one green chile cheeseburger, because, well, why not? I felt like I was in someone's home, cared for, and cared about. You don't get this very often anymore in restaurant/bars. I was one proud Corraleña. Let me tell you. Perea's Tijuana Bar only serves food at lunchtime. And it is well worth planning your lunch around going there. It is a small restaurant in a really old adobe. Family run and all house made food, even the flour tortillas. I had the green chicken casserole (#1 on the menu). It was excellent and not too large, so I didn't need to bother with a doggy bag. The waitress was very friendly and efficient--really hustled. Said she had worked there 22 years! Even though I live across town, I will definitely make the effort to go back again. read more

My husband and I had lunch there. It was our first visit. My first thought was "is there not a health inspector in this village?" This place is dark and cluttered with bottles of alcohol stacked everywhere. The food was laughably bad. A taco salad is lettuce and shredded,completely unseasoned chicken over cold tortilla chips and a plastic sample cup of bland salsa. We ordered guacamole, which literally was a mashed avocado. My husband ordered the "casserole " which turned out to be a scoop of shredded pork and bland red chile sauce with white hominy that looked like it was straight from a can. Perea's is an immensely popular Corrales institution. I found this tiny place shortly after I arrived in Corrales from he dreadful DC area, and it is one of the most comforting eateries in the Duke City area. This is homemade New Mexican food at its very best. The building is one of the oldest in Corrales, and oozes charm through its thick walls and worn brick floors. The front room is a bar, and T.C. always welcomed me each time I walked in. I usually eat in the back room at a table near the small front window where there is enough light for me to see by. If the weather is good, I eat outside. The food is astonishingly good. Enchiladas, Frito Pies (get one with Carne Adovada), Tamales, Green Chile Cheeseburgers, and more are all excellent. The superior GCCB should be ordered with just meat, cheese, chiles competition style) -- forget the salad stuff and mustard (this is my personal preference). This GCCB is currently on my New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburger Hall of Fame. No French Fries here. The Carne Adovada is better than most you will ever get anyplace. The Red is legendary. Sides for the entrées are luscious beans and posole (NOT hominy). The staff is like family, and they treat me like I am family. Mayling Garcia has been here for quite some time (ask her about the Glass Armonica). John Perea is T.C.'s son is, and tells me that there are big plans for the family place. They bought the property just to the north and plan to incorporate it into an expanded site with more parking. They will add dinner service soon [you heard it here first]. This will be a very welcome addition to the Corrales dinner scene. Perea's is one of my favorite places in New Mexico, and maybe even the universe and all its parallels. Go there. Often. Eat. Drink. We came here for lunch after our tour of Casa San Ysidro in Corrales. The bldg has lots of character as do the decorations inside. There's plenty of outdoor seating in the nice NM weather. Many of the entrees come with pozole, beans with chile, tortillas and sopapillas. Our group had adovada tacos, adovada and beef tacos, and a green chile cheese burger with a cup of their green chile stew. The tacos came with the pozole and beans. Turns out the pozole was rather simple hominy which was good to know before ordering a big bowl. The adovada tacos were very delicious because the pork was well shredded, which allowed it to absorb more of the yummy adovada sauce. The green chile cheese burger was quite good. The bun was soft but did not fall apart. The burger had good flavor and the chile had a bit of heat. I would put less mustard on the burger, but It wasn't up to me. The BEST item on the table was the green chile stew. It was not thickened. The ground pork lumps swam in a flavorful broth and chunks of green chiles. read more

I have been going to Perea's for a little over 2 years now and we call it the kitchen! It's like eating at home but we don't have to do the dishes! The food is homemade by John Perea's mother, Stella and John is the Bartender Extraordinaire! (He's also a great cook.) The biscochitos are delish and you can order them for parties or just to nosh on at home. The chile - green and red - are delightfully hot or, if you have to, they have mild. Green Chile grilled cheese is a fave as well as the beans with red. Oh and the green chile stew is available vegetarian or not and it is so good. No salt is added to anything. We love coming here for lunch - it's has really limited hours and I think it closes at like 230 or 3 pm. This place looks a little sketchy at first and parking is tight. It is like an old home -- but with a bar inside :) Each time we've entered in the bar area and get weird stares so I'm guessing there is another door. The restaurant is small but there is outdoor seating. The food is very straightforward and plain - which is why we love it. My fav is the frito pie and my husband usually gets a stuffed sopaipilla - all of which are tasty. However, the chips and salsa are not great. While the prices are low, at face value, everything is priced out individually so things can add up quickly (think: you will be charged for each can of soda - no refills). This place is like a hideaway from the city where you can sit in peace and have a burger. The real deal! Excellent, healthy, traditional New Mexican food served by the Perea family. There are only a few other places in the middle Rio Grande River Vally that make simple amazing chile plus use good quality meats, home made tortillas and tamales - Padillas, Durans, and Apple Tree cafe at Wagner Farms store. Plus Pereas has a rustic bar. Can you say local flavor? Places like El Pinto, Dos Quates, and Sadies are food factories and just don't come close. The full name is Pereas' Tijuana bar!
