We took our granddaughters for breakfast this morning. There was a short wait to be seated but it wasn't a long wait. The service and the food were amazing. I would highly recommend you stop in and enjoy their food.

Chili Bopper burger plus a side of onion rings.

To be honest, Big Boppers was a restaurant I really wanted to love, but I just was not feeling it after my first visit. I still was not feeling it after my second time either. However once I had my third meal here and experienced the same things, I knew the issues were not just one-time problems and I could at least give an honest review based on my experiences during multiple visits. For the sake of convenience, I will describe my most recent meal at Big Boppers, but it was pretty representative of all three times I ate here. On entering the restaurant, a staff member invited my wife and me to sit down at the table of our choice. After a short wait, a waitress dropped off menus and took our drink orders. By the time she brought our drinks, we were ready to order: a Southwest Skillet for my wife, and a Sunshine Skillet for me. With a coffee for me and a water for my calorie-conscious wife, our bill was $19.95 before tax and tip, which is definitely on the pricey side. Previous lunches (a Chili Bopper Burger, and a $10.95 bowl of Bopper Chili) were similarly expensive. The restaurant was decorated with a little bit of the nautical theme common to the Marblehead Peninsula, plus the bric-a-brac typical of an American-style diner. Personally, I really liked the positive message signs like "best day ever" and "the fondest memories are made when we gather around the table," but my wife absolutely loved the "eat like no one is watching" sign. During my visits, all the tables and floors have been very clean, with not even a straw paper lurking in a corner. Conversely, during all my visits, the restroom trashcans have been full to overflowing. I have tried letting the staff know about it, but during my next pitstop, the trashcans would always still be full. The wait for food was always fairly typical, with slow days being a little faster and busy days being a little slower. On balance, the meals have been average to good. The Bopper Chili was pretty good and the Chili Bopper Burger was decidedly average, while my wife and I felt the Sunshine and Southwest skillets were good if not a bit bland. However a perennial disappointment at the restaurant was drink refills. Despite having different waitresses on different visits, the result was always the same: my coffee cup or soda glass was empty, and either the waitress was no where to be found, or I could see her standing and talking in the kitchen. She would eventually check on me and ask if I wanted a refill, but invariably the same thing would happen again before the end of my meal. PROS: good food, nice atmosphere CONS: pricey, restroom trashcans were always full, drink refills were few and far in between Overall, I rate Big Boppers as being Good, and would return.

This is a super cool public market hall in downtown Sandusky with maybe 15ish (just a guess) local businesses like a bakery, bowling alley, axe throwing game space, ice cream shop and boutiques. This is a cool place to spend an hour or two just browsing and supporting local while grabbing some dessert. The building has some type of history to it which I was unable to readily find online (boo, that is so odd). But the history is paid homage in the design of this space, with old timey photos of Sandusky and Cedar Point blown up on the walls and little stories to accompany them. The design is actually brilliant. It's a cool mixture of old school heritage meets modern rustic vibes. It makes you want to stop and look. The businesses in this building are open during the pandemic, just make sure to check with each business directly before visiting as most of the hours are likely changed. I stopped by here extremely quickly (I do not go out much during the pandemic) to pick up some pre-paid birthday treats from Bake Erie. It has a spacious, accessible parking lot and is just a joy to browse. Check it out for yourself, than continue exploring the surrounding area of local businesses... and Lake Erie :)

Christmas Market If…read moreyou are looking for a unique Christmas experience for adults this is the place to come. We took a girls trip (many of us driving for over an hour) to meet up. The outside area has about 20 greenhouse style buildings set up that sell a variety of items from clothing to homemade pottery. The buildings are each heated and they have several fire pit areas along the paths to stay warm. If you want to eat inside you will need to make reservations in advance. Outside the offer stands with soup, sandwiches and wine. Fun experience and pictures look magical!

But... last night we decided to have dinner after spending time at the Holiday Market and the dining experience was a huge disappointment. We waited over 10 minutes for a server to greet us and get our drink orders. 40 minutes after ordering, our server stopped by to tell us that our apps would be coming soon. The Walleye bites were good but not seasoned and the entrees were disappointing. I had a harvest salad which would have been lovely but the "dressing" tasted like it was made from extremely strong puréed onion and nothing else. At the end of the meal, we waited another 20 minutes for the check and after almost two hours, we paid $100 for poor service, a bowl of fried fish pieces, a cheeseburger, a bowl of mediocre bisque and a salad that was just awful. Not the experience that we hoped for! We will be back for the Christmas Market next year but I think we'll opt for another dinner option next time. I would rate the wine bar and Christmas Market 5 stars! Unfortunately, the dining experience was dismal and left us with a bad (and very oniony) taste in our mouths!

We ended up eating here 2 days in a row! I chose this restaurant for our Saturday night dinner…read morebecause the specials on the board out front and the dessert list looked great, and they were. Saturday night was pretty popular and the patio was full, so we sat inside, which is why our photos were rather dark. We started with a round of drinks. I had a glass of rose. Note that the drinks menu is several pages longer than the food menu, with beer, wine, and a variety of specialty and standard cocktails. They also have an espresso bar. It wasn't on the menu, but we ordered the Street Corn dip from the specials board on the sidewalk. We got a nice sized serving, and it was very good. I had the za'atar roast chicken for my entree, and it was delicious! The chicken comes with a lemon yogurt sauce, and Fattoush salad, but the salad was kind of a cross between Fattoush and tabbouleh, with pita chips and a grain base. It was a great combo, and the chicken was very juicy and seasoned nicely. I ended up with a slice of the almond cake, which was moist and had sliced almonds on top. Very much needed after missing out in the ice cream stop this afternoon! One of my friends had a bowl of gumbo and the other one had the taco pie. Since everyone enjoyed their dinner, and we confirmed that the patio was dog friendly, we returned with Miss Pup for brunch. We were able to snag a patio seat with a super friendly server. Miss Pup mostly hung out under the table, but managed to convince some other diners to pet her. We went with some plates for the table - Chicken and Waffle, Chilaquiles, and the special Quiche, which had sundried tomatoes, bacon and feta. All 3 portions were just right for us. The chicken was really moist and the waffle had slightly crispy edges. It came with some fruit and syrup. The quiche slice was generous and it came with a large portion of salad with a fruity vinaigrette. The sundried tomatoes were a really fun addition! I chose the chilaquiles. I'm pretty sure the chips were fried fresh (the ones last night were not), and I liked that it had beans and pico on top! This dish did not contain enchilada sauce, it was more like breakfast nachos, but I really enjoyed it. This place is definitely worth a stop, and the menu stands out from the standard island fish and chips and burgers fare (not that I dislike those things, just something different)!
