I shop at the Big 5 Sporting Goods located in Thousand Oaks ,Ca. on a regular basis and have done so for at least a decade.I go there to buy certain items that I need for work that are hard to find at a reasonable price elsewhere without sacrificing quality.I don't want to spend a large sum if money on a high end pocket knife in which I am going to beat up and eventually break at my work.Big 5 runs Good ads and if your patient you can get a great deal on a nam e brand item,for a much lower price than the department stores.This is thier buidness and that'd why I shop there.Often times I run in for a nice knife and end up purchasing a a flannel or a couple work shirts,flashlights etc...I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars at this as well have many of my friends,co-workers and family in this community.Thus far,any minor problems or disgretions I have encountered over the years have been swiftly and professionaly resolved by either the clerk who was helping me or by a nearby helpful manager.It is a terrible reflection on those hard working diligent proffessionals,the incident which occured today when I was trying to pay for my product.I waited patiently in line to have a couple of knives shown to me which are kept locked up on a display case for obvious reasons.I will say that,being in the retail business for over 15 years myself,I would give the stores pricing accuracy an F or maybe even bordering criminal fraud as far as wrong prices,no prices or the just don't know and are not going to bother to even try to find out for you.I would say 75 percent if ALL Thier knives on display,have no prices at all on the shelf tag or knife itself.When I tried to incure a couple of unpriced knives,I was met with a bad attitude and snyde remarks which made me feel unimportant,unwanted and unappreciated as a customer.I know that retailers rely on student workers in thier workforce but come on man this kids chest barely reached the top of the counter.His beard was,I believe,parts of a cheap drugstore Holloween costume,and he was dressed like a 7th Grader.Sorry,maybe it was take your child to work day but I shouldn't have to babysit the clerk or reprimand the clerk assissting me at the local sporting goods store.O.K.. Bottom line is he couldn't break a 100 dollar bill at 4 o'clock in the afternoon after bring open for buisness for at least 5 or 6 hours on a very busy day.He looked at me like I was a nutcase for even handing it him which I almost didn't want to do considering he could not of been a day over 14 years old and I questioned whether he even knew what the was or had ever seen one before.I thought he was gonna start crying and said he absolutely not break such a large o it too high of a risk.I said then please call a manager at which time he told me he was.That I know us against the child labor act !!! To begin with,then he started childishly bickering with me and threatened to tell his mommy,I mean manager on me if I didn'te apologize to him.I just wanted to buy the product at this point but was refused services and I left the store promptly.I asked the REAL manager on duty for the General Store Manager and District Manager's names and was told was the CEO Of the entire company.And refused to give me futther information.From now on,I will be shopping at Dicks.At least they are not such pussies.Thank you again Big Dive !!! Went into store 7/24/25 around 8pm and the two gentleman working were so helpful! Diego at the front desk was willing to check the back for inventory so I didn't leave the store empty handed. Way to be helpful, A+ on customer service. Because Diego was busy, he had Ryan check the back, and Ryan did not hesitate, or say he couldn't. As a mom and almost 40- I have to say its very refreshing that BIG 5 has employees who want to work. Who aren't on their phones, or whom make a face when asked to check stock. Diego took initiative, he's professional, and I'm very surprised he's not a manager. Both boys were raised very well--and I'm so hopeful that they rub off on the rest of the current generation. Set goals boys, achieve them, you both have the hustle in you! Thank you for making my daughter and I's shopping experience for water shoes WORTH my time, and rewarding for me as a shopper even if we didn't end up with a purchase. Asked for help in the fishing dept. Couldn't find anyone (asked 3x) although the registers were fully manned even though it wasn't that busy. The selection is mediocre at best. Big 5 down the block has a better selection even though this store is 3 times the size. If you're looking for granny panty bathing suits or overpriced Yeti coolers this is the place though. read more

I would not recommend shopping at any big five sporting good and I used to work there. They cannot train their employees correctly because they can't even train their management staff properly. The pay is dog shit for the amount of responsibility put upon all staff members. I will gladly drop names of terrible managers and upper management staff refused to pay their employees what they promised for their position until it's brought up, they will willingly and openly say things out loud to offend customers. Consistently find all of our sports needs here, from snow, to water, to grass and more! They seem to have plenty of stock and the store is well organized. The staff is helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I have called ahead many times to check to see if items are available, they never act annoyed or like you're wasting their time, and will place you kindly on hold while they check for your request. We recently bought snow sleds for my daughters now day event. They had tons of options and plenty on supply. The manager helped me when I got there and was so kind. The lady at the register was really sweet to my two young Children's when we were checking out - major bonus since some people get so annoyed by little kids sometimes who are touching everything. Haha! Overall, great experiences here and will continue to support their business! read more

We attempted to purchase soccer shoes today and it was quite possibly the worst customer service that I have experienced. The "manager" also seemed exhausted by the fact that we needed help. When they finally found the correct shoe size, I noticed that one shoe was size 12 and the other size 1 and then they brought out two right footed cleats and then finally on the third try, it was a pair. The manager was seemingly more concerned with chatting with the cashier. The location is convenient but the customer service was terrible. read more

Sales associate, Misty, was not friendly at all. I've been to other big 5's and asked about discounts for sports and they pull out a barcode. My son is in AYSO and soccer season is starting so I know they have discounts for the local organizations. This one said "No...we don't have any here." BS! She said only if you get an email. So I looked at my emails and I happened to have one that said 10% off, but when I opened it the website didn't direct you to any barcodes. So no discount because I wasn't able to find a barcode on my email. Manager could have bypassed that and manually entered the discount. I'll be purchasing elsewhere and returning what I bought at this location. My husband is a retail store manager and there is ALWAYS a way to accommodate a customer within reasonable means. They are constantly out of stock of anything you really need, the store is cluttered, ugly and extremely poorly organized, and the employees have no idea what the hell they were doing. Avoid this place at all costs. I only go there if I have a need for something that can't be found anywhere else. Most likely it can't be found at the big five in Thousand Oaks either. It takes a lot for me to write a bad review - every single review I have written so far (except one) has been 5 stars. But this is just so wrong on so many levels, I have to put it out there. My 75-year-old dad bought a $100 bike a few weeks ago from Big5. He rode it twice, and one of the tires kept going flat. He took it to a bike shop for air, and was told that the inner tube had a hole in it. So dad called Big5, and asked Chris (the manager) if he could get a new inner tube. Chris said he couldn't give him one, but he would sell him one at a discount. Really? It's a brand new bike, that obviously came with a defective inner tube - which Chris can easily expense out. What's the problem? After some discussion, my dad says that he can't install the $20 inner tube (he has a bad back, and with labor costs, that's half the cost of the bike!). So he would just rather return the bike, and Chris the manager says, "Fine." This "manager" would rather lose a $100 sale over a $20 inner tube? And is this inner tube made of gold? Why is it $20? Not only should Chris be fired because he can't manage anything, but whoever put him in charge needs to be questioned as well. I won't even go into the BS that went down when my 73-year-old mom returned the bike to the store, and the oh-so-helpful employee gave her a hard time because the bike was "used" (it was ridden twice, not even all the way around the block each time). Then Mr Employee of the Month said he couldn't take it back without the box (which thankfully she had in the trunk). Big5, you are a Big Disappointment. We will never shop there again. read more

I had to give the employee my drivers license in order to get my money back for a pair of new 20.00 swim trunks in which I paid cash the day before. After she scanned my license I had to ask WHY the need to show my drivers license and she said......there are certain people that have committed fraud on returns. ‍ That certainly left a bad taste in my mouth and I won't be back!!! read more

I do find it amazing that this store has been able to stay in business over there years while bigger stores like Sports Authority and Sport Chalet have failed. From time to time I find what I want here but selection is pretty limited and my personal experience has been getting service here is dreadful. Probably not their fault; just understaffed or something. I've left the store for multiple reasons...finding someone to get you shoes in your sizing, finding someone to help reach something that requires a ladder to get to, underwhelming selection, etc. Back in the day I bought my kids' baseball stuff here and some backpacks, but generally kick myself when I do come here because I usually leave without being helped or finding what I need. Getting back to how they could still be operating here after all these years...my guess is that the rent is cheap. read more

After a month they where falling apart due to a manufacturing defect. He said no problem come in and get a different new pair.. Now that's customer service. When I go here on the hopes of them actually having the sneakers in my size from the current ad, I look forward to how the little wienee boys on staff there ignore you by the shoes. Then, just as you need a size not out on the floor, they scurry quickly into the stockroom to hide. Never fails to happen. If you happen to corner one of the little eye rollers, you get an attitude that is academy award worthy. This review is specific to the Big 5 on Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Thousand Oaks. And it's specific to the wonderful salesperson (and her manager) who went above and beyond to help us. My friend and I dropped into this Big 5 late on a Friday night. We were searching for hiking boots in preparation for an upcoming Yosemite trip. You might think the workers would be in a hurry to get out and start the weekend. Instead, the saleswoman (a young lady, I think her name was "Haven?"), went far above and beyond to assist us. She offered advice, suggested options when our first choices didn't work out, brought out and put away multiple shoes for us to try on, and she (and her manager Ben, also a helpful guy) tried to get us a lower price on a pair that was too expensive for our budgets. I have never experienced such excellent service in a big corporate chain store. We were completely impressed! Unfortunately, despite her best efforts, the store ended up not having the shoes we wanted in our size. Haven (I think that's her name?) gave us a $10 coupon and suggested we go to the Camarillo store. She even called that store to let them know we were on our way, and what we wanted (so they could have the shoes ready for us to try on). Unbelievable good service! We did go to the Camarillo store, where we found our shoes and used our coupons. The folks at the Camarillo store were friendly and nice enough. But nothing could match the incredible service we got at the Thousand Oaks store. read more

Stopped by this store the other day to purchase tennis balls and a few other little things. I must have walked around this small store 10 times looking for help. When I finally found someone to help me find what I was looking for I was just pointed to a distant location in the store so I had to go over and search again. I asked again looking for mens tennis shorts and another associated pointed to the middle of the store and said to look there. I felt like I was on an episode of candid camera. When I finally found everything I needed I found 6 or 7 employees by the front desk chatting away with each other. Tried to purchase a pair of shoes from a different store while on sale but was not available. Was given a rain check and shoe was supposed to be shipped to my location from the Thousand Oaks store. They did not ship it so ended up having to go there to pick it up. Showed them the order along with the rain check to get the sale price. Cashier took the order slip and the rain check slip stapled to it and got shoe from back of store. Cashier then proceeded to charge me. I noticed after I left the store that they charged me the full amount. I called them and they said that it was my fault and that could not do anything! The sandles I wanted were not marked with a sale price so I decided to leave. Just a few of the sandles had sale tags on them so I decided to return when they go on sale. On my way out I was greeted by James so I asked him when they would go on sale. He asked me which one I was interested in so he immediately went to that aisle and brought the appropriate size back to the register. He scanned to check the price and they were on sale!
