I never thought that I would ever review a Big 5 in my life. But I just met Fishing Ollivander at this Big 5 and he helped me find the fishing rod. Or, I guess, the wand chooses the wizard, Harry. He spent time going through different rods with me. Then he pretended to be types of big fish and trained me to use my hip to catch said assorted fish. When I found my ideal wand / rod ... it was magical. Next came the reel and it was almost as expensive as a PS4. But my very own Fishing Ollivander recommended it. And I'm not some filthy muggle. Hooks? Done. Questions about Carolina Keepers and sliding sinkers? He knows the way. He was there when the old magic was written. I don't know if I'll catch that 100 lb tuna tomorrow, Dave. But I already landed the next best thing: magical customer service and the best fishing store on this side of the 10 freeway. read more

Not a friendly team. First time in this store since last year when they declined to provide a refund for an opened (tape slit) product, "not in original condition". I get the policy, the supervisor/manager was just super rude about it. Went today at 8:30pm to try them again, not knowing that they closed at 8:30pm. Instead of a hello and a sorry, they tactlessly said they're "basically closing right now" and blocked the way in the unlocked door. I would've been sympathetic to them, but this was this store's chance to be shopped at by me and my 3 kids for Christmas and the sales clerk (middle-aged woman) wasn't interested or available to have a couple of extra patrons in addition to the several that are still inside while I write this. Again, not a welcoming retail environment. Grateful for Amazon I guess. read more

Service sucks! If you can go to the one in Beaumont make the drive and get real help. This place is so wacky, they have the slowest people at the register. They are being told not to allow customers a coupon if they don't have it from their email. Prob is if you are signing up at this store they really aren't sending you the coupon because I conveniently never have it on my email, and I have signed up twice now at this same Redlands store. If you make the drive to Beaumont they are so friendly and kind, it almost seems like they want you to comeback. They will go out of their way to scan the coupon they usually keep on hand. At this store in Redlands they blame you, even if you show em your email of nothing being sent ... I have to make my way to Beaumont and resign up on the email there because this place is pretending to type them in. What else could it be. They are so stingy w a coupon even when you are clearly signed up and can show your last email received. Place doesn't feel welcoming at all it feels like they will take a bullet to not give you a discount and like they are bothered to be at work. There was one good employee today, a guy who helped on the floor and was the only one running around while two people were upfront. Young kid. Great job to him. He was quick and helpful. This Big 5 Sporting goods is run pretty good. It is an older location, but well stocked. Every time I have came in looking for certain items I find them and deal with excellent staff. The people working are always friendly and courteous. They are very well stocked up with a good variety sporting good supplies and it is located in a good area. My number one for shopping here is their good variety of basic gun cleaning supplies. read more

Great customer service especially during Covid 19. The husband needed something to cure his golf twitch during quarantine. Brendan was super helpful and professional. He reached out on his own to see if we needed help. He jumped up on the ladder trying to help us find the right product then he even looked up additional product information online when his system lacked specific info. So I walked into the store preparing to buy two firearms which are on the shelf and I woke up and I said I want these two rifle's and the store manager told me sorry you can't buy that one it's on hold and I said who is it on hold for and she said oh somebody who called in and said they can if we can hold it for them I said so nobody's actually came into the store to purchase this and she said no so I said so you're not gonna show me a rifle that technically cannot be held because you're not supposed to hold ammo or firearms for any individuals and she said yes and I said said so you're telling me you don't want me to purchase either one of these rifles because someone might or might not show up read more

I wish I could give zero stars. The man (who's name I did not catch, but had a very unprofessional facial hair cut) in gun section obviously did not think my money was good enough for him. I came in looking for a rifle, and I was sold on one certain one. Now I was ready to purchase, but me being a salesmen myself I had to ask a couple more questions about the gun. Now I know the store closed at 9 and I was ready to purchase a rifle (which is not a cheap expenditure at all at) at 8:20 pm. The employee said it was too late to start the paper work for the back round check. I know that it only takes MAX 30 mins (I have purchased many guns before) to get it all done, which leaves him 10 mins before close to do something else. But the employee was to lazy and just wanted to go home. I will spend the extra money at a different company for better customer service. read more

After a hour of picking out snow gear my 10 year old son let's me know that he needs to go pee. The Manger would rather have him pee on the trash can out front then let him use the bathroom in the back. I now realize why the parking lot smells the way it does. Just had to give praise to Anthony. He works in shoes and he went above and beyond for me. Without even meeting me and only speaking to me over the phone I explained my situation that I had bought some bear paws that were a new style to me and i found them extremely uncomfortable I had worn them a little bit so there was some slight creasing in the leather yet he still stated that he would take them back for me and I told him the other style I was interested in he even put it on hold for me.. I went in a few days later to make the exchange he wasn't there but had left a note regarding my situation they took the boots back with no problem gave me my exchange for the other boots. Went to return some shoes after realizing I bought the wrong size. I had previously purchased them at the Yucaipa location and was not happy with the customer service and plain out rudeness. The girl that helped me exchange the shoes at the Redlands location (I believe it was Deanna??) was more than helpful and did not make me feel rushed and made sure I had bought what I wanted and was satisfied! Yes it's a few extra miles to drive to this location but it's worth it! read more

This place has horrible customer service. I went with my son to buy a large amount of fishing equipment. I am a lady and I had no idea what I needed. So I thought going to a sporting good store they would be able to help me get what is needed. The manager a middle aged lady came over and was very rude. She acted like I was a bother to her. We left I certainly hope they do not work on commission. I went to Walmart spent over $500 and my son is all set and the salesperson was very friendly and helpful. During these uncertain times, customer service should be 100%. Many stores have been losing money, customers and have had to close. Big 5 in Redlands will probably be one of them. Good selection of sporting equipment. We bought two guns here and despite the California anti-gun laws we were able to get them as soon as possible. Good customer service and friendly staff. We also bought our Winchester .44 Magnum Ammo here. A little too expensive . I would recommend this store for sporting goods and to buy guns. read more

I went to purchase a pair of advertised shoes, today only, at opening. There were only 3 pairs of the ADVERTIZED shoes, size 12, 11.5 and 7.5... I had to search for someone to help me .....then only 3 pairs ! I'll look for my sportswear elsewhere from now on. read more

Terrible customer service. One of the employees gave me attitude and called me obnoxious to another employee just for asking for a pair of shoes my size. Don't think she knew I can hear her. I even was kind enough to let her finish what she was doing before I even asked. The cashier also has an attitude problem forcefully sliding my box of shoes at me after I made a purchase. This is the first time I've come across a Big 5 that is so small. Kind of like that mini-WalMart you see in the news. It's just a really downsized version of the usual sized store one's used to. Didn't really experience what the previous reviews did, but all we went there for was a patio tent. Quickly found it on our own and went about our way. read more

Came in looking for sleeves to cover tatoo's on arm...we asked where they would be and the cashier said shoe department. We wandered around the shoe department for a good 5 minutes till someone finally asked if they could help. Turns out they keep the sleeves in the back because people like to steal them. The customer service here is abysmal. I went in to buy a pair of binoculars and after waiting for service at the counter for several minutes, I went to the front to ask for assistance. The cashier called for help and while I waited, my girlfriend went to look for hiking boots. On her way to the show area, a salesperson asked her if she needed help and she directed him back to the service counter saying that I needed help. She got the shoes she wanted and came back to discover the man she'd sent to me had never come. We waited several more minutes before leaving without the binoculars and the shoes. I just came to this store for the first time and I love it! Their stuff is literally half the price if not more than sports authority. The staff was super helpful and friendly. I give 3 stars for this Big 5. I would give more if it was a bigger store with more selection. The staff was just fine. They asked me a few times if I needed help, but I was just browsing. I love that they have everything for sports, camping, and outdoor fun. I can spend hours in this tiny store lol. I appreciate that they are not as expensive as Sports Chalet, but still carry quality items. I went to get some more running gear. I got a Nike Visor so my scalp can still breathe and my face doesn't burn in the sun:) I also got some runners gummies that were very tasty(much better than the goo). I will be back Big 5! read more

My son just found out tonight that he needed a wooden bat for a baseball game tomorrow morning. We arrived at this big 5 location literally 2 minutes before closing. The kind employees allowed us in. They even checked the back for the specific bath that my son wanted. No complaints, no attitude, no dirty looks. They were so patient with us. read more

I'm writing this review in hoping that management /supervision will take my recent experience, at this store, inconsideration. My friend and I came in to pick up his shot gun on Saturday (4/30 at 5pm). We waited , along with another party, for service at the gun counter. It took about 10-15 mins for the manager to come to the counter. At this point the party in front of us left the store in disgust. My friend gave the manager the paper work for his gun to pick up. The manager refused to help us stating that there wasn't enough help at the counter and that he had to take a break. I understand that there is a time slot to take a break before the law is broken. What made us upset was the manager was never apologetic. It would of made the situation better if the manager was less aggressive towards us. read more

Should have listened to the reviews. I will never buy a gun here ever again. California law state 10 days to the min. I came to pick mine up with all the paperwork and they tell me they can't release it to me because of their printer. I already passed the background check same day of purchase. They blamed ups and said the printer has been broke for a week. Instead of losing customers maybe buy a new printer. If I didn't pay for the background check already I'd get a refund and go to turners. Don't blame other people for your guys' errors! read more

We shop at Big 5 for common workout stuff. The prices are great. The service is hit or miss, some staff are helpful and others are lost and unconcerned. Overall the price difference is worth it. I often get sale shoes there. Again, quality is not top of the line but the prices is great. 3 stars is about right, 4 n a good day and 2 on a bad one. read more

Just had one of the worst customer service experiences here. It blows my mind at how many people in customer service lack basic math skills. I simply asked the cashier Alyssa if she was able to make change for a 20 if I paid for my item with cash. She said yes after I told her I would give her 2 20's. I gave her $40 for my item that cost 17.50 with the expectation that she would break my 20 because she told me she could. (I even asked her do you have enough in your drawer to do that and I told her I don't care what denomination she gives me back I just need my extra 20 broken. ) She put the total in the computer opens her drawer and proceeds to give me back my 20 and the ones that I'm owed. I said you told me you would break my 20 for me. She then tells me that's what the computer told her to do and that's what she has to go with. She was incredibly snarky as she told me to have a great day when I left. It's just frustrating when people have zero customer service skills and zero math skills. read more

Horrible customer service experience!!!! I bought two neck blades at $9.99 each three weeks ago misplaced my receipt spoke with a Matthew told me they would honor the current sale price of the items I bought at store credit? When I got there I was meet with a arrogant, smirky grim faced individual who goes by Heidi the asst Mgr she tells me I will credit you the last sales price of the items at $7 each I told her so since I can't produce a receipt you will just makeup any price you want?? Why can't you retrieve the receipts thru your systems ? Well to make the long story short I exchanged the cheap made in China blades for a underarmour camo shirt and paid the difference when I looked at the shirt at home the dummies at the redlands store tagged the price label on the fabric and not the stitching? I have spent thousands of dollars thru the years with these clowns and the one time! I misplace a receipt they treat me like a bum on the street! I will never spend another red penny with this company! Even if they change into another company with new employees which by the way , they service their customers could be very near in the future.
