If I was just rating Big 5 as a store, it would be three stars. I don't think that there is anything special about this store. However, I was impressed with the customer service. Ankle weights and a cushioned mat were on my list. I carefully put my $5 coupon in my purse, when I got to the cash register is had disappeared into a mass of papers. Dead-set on taking these items home with me, coupon or not, I paid with a credit card. After placing the receipt in my purse the coupon jumped back to where it belonged. The clerk returned my items, then rang them up again using the coupon, and was nice about it. read more

Big 5 Sporting Goods, your neighborhood discount sports store. Not very big, and the selection is on the small side, but their prices are better than Sports Authority. Get on their email list for better deals. As much as I love the great outdoors, I haven't shopped here all that much. I'm fine with what Walmart carries, and I've found great deals at Sports Basement. But we got our sleeping bags, inflatable boat, and oars at Big 5, and probably other things I can't think of right now. They also have shotguns, so although I'm in the market for a firearm, Big 5 doesn't have what I'm looking for. But they've served us well when we've needed them. And then we have the shoes . . . IMHO, this is where they shine. They have a good selection at GREAT prices! When I wear out my rompin'-in-the-hills shoes, this is the first place I stop. It was also the first place we stopped for my hunny's tennies and my daughter's rompin'-in-the-hills shoes (well, we got those near Santana Row in San Jose). Not the biggest store, but usually not too busy and plenty to choose from. We went yesterday to outfit my son for baseball(they grow so fast). Better prices than sports authority. Bought baseball pants, a belt, socks, sliding underwear that hold a cup and a cup which they marked down for me since it was missing the "thong string", didn't matter I was shoving it the underwear little pocket Thingy anyway. Or my son does anyways. Will always check here first for our sporting supplies. Total bill... $55.00. Not horrible. read more

She had a great attitude and seemed to be someone who actually cares about their job and customers. I have never been in this store, but some juicy sales on shoes caught my eyes in the weekly mailer. Upon entering I was promptly greeted with a "Welcome to Big 5". As I meandered and checked out the inventory I was asked if I wanted any shoes to retrieve from the back. I wasn't ready yet, but appreciated the proactive attempt from the Sales Associate. I didn't know where a certain pair of shoes was, asked, and was energetically helped by one, then two associates. I bought a pair of walking/hiking shoes. The Sales Price was very good. The clerks were helpful and didn't sound negative nor listless. A satisfying shopping experience. [ Constructive Critique: Being probably twice as old as the checkout clerk, when he called me "Boss" a couple of times, I knew he was attempting to be friendly and respectful, but a simple "Sir" would have been fine. "Boss" sounds too informal, like a peer. Other men my age might not have a problem at all with it, so take it as one man's opinion. Additionally, I heard a Sales Associate talking slang with another as he went into the back, yet heard him swearing. Not professional. Either speak that way when you are clearly out of earshot or don't do it at all at work. You might lose customers for being that inappropriate. Joking around is great on the job, but you gotta control it and respect your customer base. Etiquette still matters. I would give a 5-Star Rating, otherwise. Customer service here is great. I bought a ping pong table at Big 5. When I took it out of the box at home, it had a dent most likely from the manufacturer or shipping from the manufacturer to Big 5. The manufacturer's customer service wouldn't help. The managers at Big 5 were extremely nice and gave me a replacement. They took it out of the box in the store to ensure the replacement wasn't damaged. read more

Funny thing before going hiking I stopped by the local Big 5 Sporting Goods store and they didn't even know how to redeem coupons or even take electronic smart phone payment methods. In addition the store is very limited in products stocking. Not even their main weekend manager seem to have any clue on how to handle simple customer needs. I'm definitely not coming back to this location again. Simply pathetic. read more

Went to NorCal a couple of weekends ago to celebrate CNY with boytoy's family. Found out his parentals decided last minute to go on a tour group to NYC...yeah, it was supposed to SNOW while they were there. My eyes bugged out, I whipped out my trusty Yelp app on the iPhone and looked for a sporting good store nearby. Big 5 was one of the top ones to pop up. We took the whole family there & found all the necessary thermals, gloves, beanies & snow boots. Everyone from the shoe guy to the cashier was friendly & helpful. We even straggled in about a half hour before closing but they greeted us with a smile and were willing to answer any questions and hunt down the correct sizes for us. I've worked in a clothing store back during my college years and when it's close to closing time and you're already tired from working 8+ hours and starting to clean up, the last thing you want is a family of 5 invading your store to try on a bunch of stuff and cause a mess. Not that we caused a big mess but things get disarranged when you don't know what you're looking for and are just winging it to make sure your future in-laws don't lose a toe or fingertip on an impromptu trip to the East coast during the Winter time. I really liked this store and wish the employees at the Big 5 off Wilshire Blvd. in Los Angeles were just as friendly & helpful as the ones at this NorCal store. read more

I drove all the way from Baypoint to pleasant hill to get water shoes for my daughter's upcoming camping trip. I noticed very unhelpful and rushing cashiers as i waited in line to pay. When i got to the register I wasn't even greeted, instead the woman at the cashier said " ok next" I proceeded, inserted my card, i can here the cashier behind her telling a customer they don't take apple pay, and said to everyone standing in line " nothing new here guys" wow. I put my pin and the cashier rudely told me to "finish up".I had... I commented on how rude the service was and asked to speak to a manager. She disregarded me and said he's unloading the truck somewhere. Every single person i heard speak in there was rude. Talk about being thankful people are shopping here in the middle of a pandemic. As a gift to my husband I wanted to surprise him with a new pair of shoes. Nike Shox to be exact. It was early and not busy at all when I came in. The shoes are all over the back wall. A nice employee came over to help me. Unfortunately they have zero Shox in stock. He indicated that they hadn't carried them since he started working there. Oh well. So as I walked out I went through the women's Nike section. They had some great deals! Then I realized I was there to buy my husband a gift, not myself. First thing I noticed when walking into the store was the cleanliness and it looks new. There were employees readily available everywhere. I walk over and asked the manager about re-printing my fishing license because I didn't bring it to Walnut Creek with me on our road trip. It costs $13 to print out my license again that I originally got in SD with a salt water license. I also got a Ready2Fish pole and some plastic worms for a pretty good price. They have gear for pretty much every sport. The prices aren't that bad either. I also used they bathroom which is located by the back corner of the store by the camping gear. It was a clean bathroom and you need an employee to type the code in for you in order to get into the back. Definitely a clean, well organized store without crazy lines. read more

I went for a haircut in the old County Square Market center and saw that Big 5 was coming soon! Big 5 is a store I associate with the late 80's and early 90's when I was younger and played good ol' "sports" and I got everything from tennis balls to basketball needles there. This was before I graduated to "lifestyle activities" like climbing and cycling, and I became more of an REI guy. Lately, though, I've come to appreciate the lower cost camping and water-sports products at Big 5, so I'm pretty happy one is opening up in the neighborhood. I'm even holding off on a backpack I want to buy at the Concord Big 5, just so I can buy it at this store when it opens. Plus, I am really happy the huge County Square spot is being taken up by somebody. I was loyal to County Square til the end, since it was my neighborhood asian food store. But I'm Filipino and I also understand why Seafood City with its partners-in-crime Chowking,Valerio's and Red Ribbon were just too much of a draw. Anyway, I guess all good things must come to an end. I came In a few months ago to but new works shoes. I'm on my feet 9-12 hrs a day so I needed comfortable shoes within my price range. There was a new sales associate and he wasn't to familiar but he helped me as best he could, he told me it was his 2nd day and if he didn't know something that he would find someone who did. That's most important!! It's ok not to know the answer. Found a great pair of shoes on sale that I liked, cute too!! And as I'm about to leave the checkout a little girl bumped into me with all her school paperwork in her arms. So I bend down to help her pick them up and walk out. Then when I get home to put my gel insoles in my shoes I realize they are missing. I FREAKED OUT!! Thank god, I called right away and and the manager said no worries we didn't know why you paid for them and then just left lol he said he would keep them in the back room for me when I'd come the next day to pick them up I was so worried having spent also to $40 on shoes that I thought were possibly stolen from my car cuz my windows were open or I left them in the store next door. I was pleasantly relieved when they were so friendly and understanding!! Came the next day without any issues and picked them up. Funny story but it ended well thank goodness!!! read more

The shotgun I bought failed. The Manager on duty told me "come on down!" Once I got there, he told me, "oops, my bad. My boss said, I can't help you!" Canyon Sports fixed it right up, gave me a warranty and it shoots better than it did out of the box! Won't be back for anything gun related. A man's word is all he has, guess the mgr that promised to exchange the weapon forgot about the internet, & how lousy service can affect the business. This Big 5 is huge and it's located in a great place, easy to find since it's right off the freeway and a huge parking lot so that's never a problem. It's ammo shortage season, so since I was in town, I decided to swing by and give it a quick look-over and see if I got lucky. Lo and behold, THERE WAS ONE BOX OF REMINGTON 9mm left. Of course, I quickly scooped it up and headed to the cash register. My beau decided to wander around the store for some things before paying and he somehow ended back up in the guns and ammo section. AND THIS IS RIDC. The staff who was working the back then puts out a box of 250 rounds out, same thing, same brand, same 9mm. I was super pissed off because he said ohhhh, well after you picked up your box the guy who was suppose to show up didn't so it was left hiding in the back. So I swooped that up and paid and left. I get it, you have a shortage but that looks really bad on your part to be "hiding" and "saving" ammo for customers because their policy has been first come first serve and everybody gets a fair chance at the ammo. If it wasn't for my nosy boyfriend, we wouldn't have gotten lucky. The store overall was well stocked, just my impression of the staff was diminished especially if this is how this treat customers. Dislike. But they might have more ammo stock than other Big 5's that I've been cruising around the Bay Area. read more

Ordinarily, I love this place. But......... Am looking to buy another gun. But, my complaint here is about business, not guns. To purchase in Ca you have to pass a state-designed 30? test w/ a set fee. Most any licensed gun dealer can administer. Asked at counter if they administered the test. "Yes, but only if you buy one of OUR guns." They offer only one gun - which apparently even they can't move. I asked, then, if they were licensed to receive guns from other legal "outlets" and sell to me (i.e., at a markup, of course, to cover their costs). "Yes, we could do that, we could accept such outside guns; but choose not to. Oh, and we also have no ammo of any type, even for the single gun we do want to sell." So, they have no ammo, are unwilling to accept any gun they don't stock, can't sell the single gun they do stock, and refuse to administer the state-required test (needed to buy in first place) unless customer buys their ONE gun. Odd way to run a business. But, so long as you get a salary.........that works for Big5. read more

Had all the ammo I needed, aside from the tough-to-find .22 caliber. The prices are a little high since they're steel bullets and not brass (which is cheaper, I found out), but still, if you need something in a pinch, seems like they have it. Sunday 2/12/17 I went in there just like the day before I bought what I needed and I paid cash for everything I go back next day remind you I never broke the seal on the box never opened it and I wanted to return it the cashier and the store manager did me so dirty because I'm a young man with tattoos all over so I was at the register the store manager breaks the seal on the ammo box opens all the boxes in the package looks pulls out out of each box at least 5 -8 rounds puts them back out of every box in the case I asked him do you do this to 50 year old men too he smiled and walked off like a dog with his tail between his legs. This review is specifically for the Pleasant Hill store. It is a nice, clean Big 5. It doesn't have as many items or inventory as the Big 5 in Concord, but the store has a more open feel and is less cluttered. I love the Big 5 chain. Been a Big 5 customer for probably more than 30 years. They fill a niche, and the prices are always fair and sometimes really damn good! read more

If I could give ZERO stars I would; every time I come to this Big Five I leave being overcharged? !! The last two times I had to return the same day to have my purchase price adjusted ! I made the mistake of buying water shoes for my child , and sure enough when I was home I looked at the price on my receipt versus the price on the box and AGAIN I was overcharged! I drove to this store (Pleasant Hill) to pick up a second pair of running shoes after buying some in a store closer to home. They fit so well, that I wanted to get another. Sadly, they were out of stock in the store closest to me. It was worth the extra half hour drive to Pleasant Hill.
