Always felt that I received good attentive service here, much better than larger stores where it feels like self service.

As in the past, the greeting upon entering was very pleasant and the young man asked if we were looking for anything today. I said we were in the area and just looking. Being on the mailing list, you get tons of emails and coupons so I was going to use my coupon, find a few things for my boys and cross off whatever we could find on the clearance racks from our back to school shopping. So at least a star for the good efforts on the greeting, and he was initially the only employee to be seen in the store at around 3 pm on a weekday. After over 20 min browsing in the store and the boys each finding 2-3 items on our own, we decided to check out any sales on shoes. They each found shoes on the wall and we did not see any other sizes in the aisles. We were standing in the area for approx. 10 min, saw one employee go in the back room and didin't come back out after 5 min, so one of the boys went up front and asked for help. He pages someone to help in shoes. Yes, a woman with an employee lanyard with buzz cut and tiny pony tailed appeared quickly but just stood next to another woman standing the area looking confused. She didn't say a word, ask who needed help or seem to want to do anything at all. It was very odd. I told one of the boys to ask for his size since she didn't look our way at all despite sitting there, with one shoe from the wall in each of their hands. My son asked loudly to catch her attention and politely, "Can I get a size 10-1/2 in these please?" The woman literally said nothing, and as she turned away quickly I said, "wait, we need another one too" but she ran away as if upset to get the one, handed it to him without saying a word, abruptly turned around and left quickly. Oddest and rudest interaction I've had in a store. My other son and I got up to go to the aisle she found the other in but could not find anything that looked like our shoe. I got very irriated at the lack of customer service and woman almost seeming upset to provide any customer service at all. I told my boys forget it, "nobody here wants to help", and I couldn't find the other shoe and wasn't going to struggle to get help any more. The woman appeared in the aisle with another employee wearing a lanyard, a woman with medium length brown hair. As I was clearly upset, the buzz cut employee says "you didn't ask for anything else"... REALLY? You ran away, didn't speak a single word to us! Not.ONE.Word! I had my boys just leave everything we were going to purchase right there. I'm sure I embarrased them. I don't care. This was by far the rudest and worst customer service experience I've had. The store didn't have the stock of merchandise it used to. Removed myself from the mailing list so I won't receive multiple emails daily from them anymore and ever be tempted to think visiting this store again would be a good idea. Literally shocked at how a business like this stays in service, except perhaps because they are also online. I don't see this location staying open long. read more

As someone commented in the reviews, what makes this store stand out is the excellent crew. It is a remnant of how the stores used to be a decade ago before the steep increase in on-line shopping. Everyone at the store looked pretty aware and concerned about customer satisfaction. We bought a few pairs of shoes. Taylor in shoe department was so professional and knowledgeable. They had nothing, and had questionable service, but then We went to big 5 and they had all the shoes, sizes and amazing service. Our first stop will always be big 5 from now on. Wonderful spot. Really surprised that this location is so poorly rated. Came in today to buy a pair of running shoes for my son. I was greeted promptly when I walked in and assisted by Tyler. He was very knowledgeable and steered me towards what I was looking for. Prices are fairly reasonable and the $10 off $30 coupon that arrives in the monthly local mailers are accepted on most items in- stock at Big 5. The store does seem a bit cluttered and disorganized and this was on a weekday morning. I imagine that could be frustrating to some if the store was busier and no one was available to help. I do plan on returning to make additional purchases in the near future (hopefully with the same pleasant shopping experience). I was helped fairly quickly; in and out within 15 minutes! read more

From the greeting I got walking in the door; the $10 off $30 coupon that was presented to me after I mentioned that I forgot my $10 off $50 coupon at home; the customer service that found the boots I wanted in the size that I wanted; to the thank you'd that I got as I was walking out the door with my purchase. This was one of the most complete and best customer service efforts that I've seen in a long time from an entire staff of employees. I congratulate Big 5 on this crew. Their efforts would make a great training film on how to make the customer feel welcome, important and appreciated! read more

I recently started taking golf lessons and last week was the class on driving short irons; I did so well that I was rewarded with painful blisters on both hands. So I thought it wise to stop at Big 5 to pick up a glove before my hybrid iron and wood driving class this weekend. After hunting all over and not asking for help (staying true to my Y chromosome), I finally gave up and was told they were kept under lock and key at the checkout counter. The girl at checkout - Sara - was super helpful - she gave me an assortment of sizes and brands to try, and waited patiently while I selected my glove, serving other customers seamlessly without rushing me. Prices ranged from $12.99 to $19.99 - I'm just a beginner so I went for the inexpensive glove, and even scored a $3 discount! Sara was as surprised as I :) I will likely be back for a second glove depending on how my other (gloveless) hand does this weekend! read more

Went here today for an item that was supposed to be in stock, but we couldn't find it. Shout out to Rudy, who not only looked it up on the computer and said they were supposed to have four, but he went out onto the sales floor with us to look for them. Unfortunately, none could be located so he again searched in the computer and printed out a list of all the Big Five Sporting Good stores within about a 25 mile radius that had the item in stock. He found it at our own Big Five store right here in Dublin. Rudy gets five stars for great customer service. But, one star deducted for the store manager. There's 2 big signs on the front door saying masks are mandatory for everyone inside and any customer not wearing one will be asked to leave. Pretty strong wording directed at customers, but we had absolutely no problem complying. The first thing I noticed walking in though was that the manager had his mask around his chin and every other employee was either doing the same or not wearing one at all. It's kind of hard to blame the employees for violating their own policy when the manager isn't even doing the right thing. But, we would definitely go back in again for the customer service. read more

Went today to pickup my Benelli and had the pleasure of dealing with Crystal another Manager there. She was very Attractive, Knowledgeable, Fast and Efficient . While I was there a Co Worker of hers ask what she was doing tonight. She told him nothing she was tired. That made me laugh . I am so happy that I finally found out what Big 5 stands for and where they got their name. Now that I know it makes more sense and I hope it helps explain things to you, too. Here is what I found out: Big 5 stands for the 5 reasons we are a lousy sporting goods store: 1. Our prices are ridiculous. If you pay full price for anything at Big 5 then you are a total sucker! Everything in our store is on sale for 30% to 70% off at one time or another. EVERYTHING. Nothing was brought in that we did not or will not have on one of our ads. Do not pay regular price at this mark down house! Do not!! 2. Our employees are awful. I don't know how so many unqualified people can work in one place. And, you, the lady with the dark hair. The one with the "pardon me" and "excuse me, sir" and "just a moment please, sir" all spoken with that voice and tone of a patronizing mother / method actress. You are the worst offender of them all! You know who you are and anyone who has been there in the last few months knows this lady. 3. We tell people we sell hunting and fishing licenses, but we never have them. You see, we get three fishing licenses, four hunting licenses, two second rod stamps, one Delta Bay enhancement stamp, one California duck stamp and zero of the Federal duck stamps. We sell this tiny selection of tags / licenses in minutes. Here is the catch, we tell you to come back tomorrow because we expect to get some more. You keep coming back and we never have them! Brilliant! 4. Our "selection" of fishing gear is second to none. But at Big 5 that means, if you look for a second you realize we have none. Well, at least nothing that would you want to use. 5. Number 5 represents the shortest amount of time, in minutes, that you spend in our checkout line or shoe department or gun department. 5 represents the number of employees out of 6 who are in the store at any given time who do not "work in this department", who do not "know how to work the register", who do not "have the key for the case", who are "on break" or who are not going to be able actually assist you in any way. I am sorry Big 5 that this sounds so harsh. I will admit that I have purchased firearms at your store on several occasions. When you do have the "sales" the prices are good. But, it was these trips to your store that I discovered how lousy you are. 45 minutes to wait for a "manager" to complete some forms while you wait is enought time to explore the store and see what is going on. I would give 0 stars if possible. I just left this store appalled at the service provided by the cashier and store manager! Have you ever heard of customer service??? I had two transactions totaling over a $100 with a coupon. I asked nicely if I could please use the coupon on both since my other coupon had just expired. I was told rudely by both NO we don't do that! You can't make a one time exception? You just lost a faithful customer over $10! How pathetic! Shoppers - do no shop here! Well organized, brightly lit and everything is in order. Came here to get some gels and hydration tablets for a half marathon I'm training for. They didn't have the inserts I was looking for, which I've only been able to find in Kaiser pharmacies. I was asked by several employees of I needed help finding any items, but I personally like looking by myself. Prefer this store over Dicks where items were placed randomly (employees even stated the items were placed in weird places) or didnt know what items I was looking for. read more

I normally find this place expensive. I started going on a regular basis because I couldn't find what I needed anywhere else. They really do have a great selection, and unless you want to drive to Pleasanton to another overpriced place, it's great. Now, the good: I think I figured out how to shop here. You have to not be in NEED of something, and willing to wait. Eventually everything goes on sale, and there are BIG sales. Just picked up some in-lines, normally $200, Nike, for $55. Got some $70 sandals for $22, kid's keeper gloves for $8, you get the point. Be patient, it'll pay. read more

I normally shop online since I am very busy but Thursday night I saw a few things at big 5 that were in store only buys and I actually wanted them but didn't know what would fit. (no names since I only had a moment with each) I took my mom with me to shop on friday, well the first person to help me gave me an item then disapperaed, after I started looking around myself than finally another person came out from the back and help me with one item then disappeared I was like ok, I finally went looking for the sales person to ask for help, I was told they are on break at this point my mom said "lets go" she walked out, in the car said she got uncomfortable after the first 3 min since she knew they didnt want to help me. so I was like ok and we left. This morning I Went to the Dublin store they were great too bad my mom wouldn't go she'd loved the service there. after I got home I looked online for a hat again big 5 had a sale and again in-store only item some in stock at Livermore but call first, I called Livermore store rather than waste time. Online it said Livermore had a limited supply and was an in-store only item the call I was told it was seasonal and in a box in the back and the employee who answered said he was not allowed to go into those boxes, so I asked to speak to manager he basically said he would not look for the hat since it was in a box in the back. So I ended the call and called Dublin within a few min they said they had item and would hold for me I think Livermore needs a change since these 2 stores are only a town apart the service is downright despicable at Livermore. if it wasn't for Dublin location I would never even think to shop a big 5 ok im off to go get my hat in dublin. read more

Terrible, terrible, terrible customer service! First off I was surprised to learn that they sell guns at this location.. I didn't know people went hunting around here.. Half the items in their store aren't labeled with prices and the associates are unattentive.. I couldn't even get a question answered regarding how much an item cost after standing around for a while so I left the store and moved on to Target.. I had such a different and much more pleasant experience at the Dublin Big 5.. They seriously need to revamp this store because it looks run down like a hot mess and it's hard to tell who even works there.. After comparing some of the prices of Big 5's items with same or similar items at Target I learned that they charge double the price! With such shitty service and non-competitive pricing I left the store unnoticed.. Way to go Big 5! Not. read more

We came in today to see if we could outfit my son for baseball this season. We had several employees help us along the way and were able to get everything we needed. I went in for a private party transfer. No one, not even the guy at the gun counter knew if my rifle is good. He thought it was an 'assault' weapon. The rifle I was selling is a kel-tec su-16 CA (hint: CA means legal in Cali). It has a regular stock, no pistol grip and fires a 5.56mm cartridge. The manager came and ask what caliber. I told him it fires 5.56mm. The manager told us they can't do the transfer because the su-16 is an assault weapon. This guy needs to read up on laws or has really poor reading comprehension. Other Big 5's have done it. Just don't go to this Big 5. Go to Dom's or some other firearm shop. read more

Stopped by here 2 weekends ago while they were having a big sale. The camping gear was really cheap and I was tempted to pick up a new sleeping bag but since we are moving in a few months it would be 1 more thing to pack up so I decided to wait. Sigh. They had some nice ones and it was such a good sale too! My husband picked up some new sneakers for $40, and this guys got size 13 feet so we are very happy when we can find him some comfortable shoes for less. They also have fishing gear, skiing and snow boarding equipment, soccer shoes, basketballs, tennis rackets, jogging suits and anything sports related you might need. I usually wait for a sale before hitting this place up but the selection meets my needs. Also the line moved quicker here then at the one I'm used to going to in Concord so that pretty sweet too. This place is pretty full so times you may have to hunt around a bit to get the exact item your looking for but it's still a very nice store. read more

I wanted to purchase a pair of tennis shoes for my child. The shoes were on sale but they couldn't locate the left shoe. I asked for the same sale price on a second pair they had in stock. However the store manager had a terrible disposition and said he could not offer any additional discount. When asked why he said he did not want to. I have shopped at the Big 5 Sport Goods store in Livermore for at least 8 years now. The prices are about as low as you will find without having to purchase on the internet, the sales staff and clerks are friendly and I can almost always find what I need there. Gary and the others who work behind the counter for gun sales are exceptionally friendly, courteous and help get what I am looking for. When I go in their store, I feel like I am talking with my next door neighbor as they are that friendly. read more
