Have visited this store many times over the years for sporting and fishing equipment. Staff has always been helpful and the store clean.

Been going to this Big 5 for 30+ years. Trying on discount shoes with my dad after looking at the deals in the newspaper. My wife and I always drive by and wonder how they're still open in the current brick and mortar environment. Well, we are still left wondering after going in there for snow pants. Don't get me wrong, we got some snow pants for our son at a decent price and he was able to try it on. But there are roof leaks leaking through disrepaired ceiling tiles, in multiple spots. There's items in the store that look like they've been in that store from 30 years ago because they've had since damage. And hardly any effort is put into stock and organization on the shelves. Employees seemed THRILLED to be working there! (Please see the sarcasm there...) Sad that old historic stores are doomed to disappear. Can't imagine this location lasting another 5-10 years. But hey, PROVE ME WRONG! read more

If you want to know why big box retail is failing, go thus location. The staff is more interested in watching whatever is on their phone then assist you in finding merchandise that the website says they have in stock. Never coming to this location again! read more

My wife and I visited Big 5 Sporting Goods in Fremont looking for an air pump for our air mattress. They had a good selection of pumps in stock. We were unsure of the best/most economical air pump. Asaid was very helpful in helping us select the right pump for our needs. He explained each unit and finally gave his recommendation. The air pump worked great. Its still good. Staff are ok. Products have always been amazing. I'm just not a fan of one of the obnoxious workers (who's looks overweight and with glasses). Most of the time when I ask for certain types of items (such as pepper spray), that employee would just say, if "it isn't in this wall" we don't have it. I mean it's not the worst response but he's saying that while just sitting down in the chair at the front while chit chatting w/ 1-3 employees. Could have at least stood up and verified by looking at the wall he was referring to if a certain item I was looking for was actually there. And it's mostly the tone of his voice when he talks is what makes me cringe. Again, sounds obnoxious, lazy, and basically does not want to help. A very direct opposite of how I was treated before in earlier years of going here from different other gentlemen and good women. I'm not saying this guy is bad but the way he handles things gives me the impression he doesn't want work here. I don't really see the good guys that used to work here anymore too. Although the place was pretty empty, I found their prices to be reasonable. I recall big five sporting goods as one of the go to sporting goods stores during Black Friday. It seems that the brick and mortar set up has taken its toll with online vendors starting to dominate in the last several years. The variety of items may not be As wide as REI but I think that the store is also geared toward more affordable camping, hunting, and other outdoor recreational activities. Today I went in to find a good fruit paring knife that I can bring with me camping. It was nice to be able to hold the knives in my hands so that I could get a feel for the weight in person. Other things that I might not have been able to take into account through technical specifications came to light. For example the ease of flipping the knife in and out of the cover, as well as The notches available for pull out. Balance of the way it distribution was also something that I was able to feel in my hand. read more

I have been shopping at Big 5 for approximately 40 years. About a 1.5 years ago I bought a highly rated Kamp-Rite Deluxe Folding Hammock. I spoke with the Big 5 Fremont stores manager named Brad. What a useless manager he is!! I asked for help with either replacing the broken items or for any assistance he may offer. He was unwilling to even put me in touch with Kamp-Rite directly. To anyone who is planning to shop at Big 5 in Fremont be very careful of the manager. He is not customer oriented. I am not surprised to see the low ratings for the Fremont Big 5. Not surprised that this big 5 has 2.5 stars I was shopping for a camping Lantern. I have already been to different retailers and decided to try one last place. This big 5 had stock when I checked online. Found 2 lanterns but one had damaged packaging and was taped together. I mentioned that fact, at check out. Jacob was assisting me at the register. He was very nice and accommodating with checking the inside of the packaging, unfortunately the lantern was missing accessories but would still work. He mentioned that he could discount the item and I was thrilled because I was exhausted from shopping. Off to the side there was a women sitting on a tall chair who began a conversation with Jacob. Her tone was off putting and direct. Not very approachable. She didn't introduce herself or greet me. Which I find to be rude. It was like I wasn't even there. She stated that the product could not be sold if it is missing pieces. Understandable. I'm guessing she is a manager?? Not sure, because again, she didn't introduce herself. Just put her two sense in. I've worked retail for 8 years plus 6 years in management and if a product was put back on my sales floor with boxing tape by one of my employees!!? I would apologize. And own that the product unfortunately cannot be purchased due to policy. Period. Now I have to drive all the way to another store. Which Jacob called for me, thank you Jacob. This is a big shout out and thank you to your customer service person at your store in Fremont. I took my autistic adult son to buy some shoes and my usual problem is that my son looks like any other young adult with no visible signs of any disability. But your service person treated him with utmost care after quickly realizing that he has a problem and treated him so well, that my son bought two shoes. This employee of yours is an exceptional person with kindness and patience that will get well rewarded in his life and career. I hope he does well in life. And Big 5, I would guess is very lucky to have an employee like him. The staff are very nice and helpful. However, this review is mainly about the Rugged Exposure house brand Journey II MF shoe. This was my late father's favorite shoe for walking and hiking, and when he could no longer do those things and his balance was bad, they were excellent support shoes at a fraction of the cost of specialized balance shoes. Later, when diabetes made his feet swell a bit, we just shifted to the wide width shoe. My father's physical therapist thought they were specially made for poor balance! Anyway, thank you Big 5 for supplying my dad with footwear he loved at a great price that he could wear at all life stages. read more

Here we go :} As a previous employee and I mean a long time ago of Big 5 I always loved this store. Unlike stores like Dick's and REI, this store has a more affordable base line for people who have kids in sports or if your looking for sporting goods that will do the job but will not last forever like REI. They carry a good amount of brand names like Nike, Armour etc and you can always find great deals on shoes. This year it is all about the camping gear right? So I came over here to get some gifts for Timmy shssssss :} and I found a great camping backpack and other little camping goodies as well as I had some coupons and got a great deal on some shoes for my brother. I use to get my dad's fishing license here but for the last 2 years the machine kept breaking so now I just buy that directly online. The store is packed with stuff and they ran some really good deals this year when it came to Christmas toys, camping, shoes of course and other items. I like the fact that when I walk into the store they put most of the items right up front near the cashier so you don't have to run around everywhere looking for the advertised items. They are usually marked with a hot pink ticket. What drives me crazy is that this store can get a bit messy and if you are looking for something in particular it does take a while to get through some of the items. Most of the time I get really good service here, the cashier was really sweet and one of the team manager that helped me with the backpack was not in the best of moods. Don't get me wrong she helped me a find a really good price on a backpack but prior to her assistants with the shoes and other things she was being yelled at by an employee about a break, which that young man needs to learn some manners. Now I don't know about you but that would never fly with me and it is really unprofessional in any setting. I think Big 5 is a great store they have supported my son's football teams over the years and are very willing to participate in the community. I hope that if management see's this that the DM can bring some order in the store and stop employee's from making a scene because let's say it "Christmas shopping is stressful as it is and I love Christmas shopping" and that whole scene was very uncomfortable to witness as well as it really put a damper on my Christmas shopping spirit because it seemed that everything I asked for was a bit of burden but I can understand that she was mad and upset at the young man for yelling at her in front of customers. The one thing I do suggest is add yourself to their mailing list for they have daily deals which you need a coupon and it is literally only for a day. Also, please keep in mind that many items that are on sale cannot be purchased online but are in-store purchases only. Seriously though don't forget your coupon. :} Merry Christmas! read more

Not sure if she was the manager or not unfortunately did not get her name came up and approached my friend and I with a very unwelcoming attitude, very snide replies, refused to answer out questions but just harbor us with with complete attitude. I hadn't been inside of a Big 5 for a very long time. I decided to visit this store since I needed some simple hiking gear and realized that it was going to cost me an arm and a leg at R.E.I. I loved how almost half the items at this store were on sale. That was awesome + pleasantly surprising! Many of the things that I needed were way cheaper than R.E.I and what I was expecting to pay. The thing that I didn't like about this store was that it was a huge MESS. Don't get me started on the shoe section -- ridiculous. Also, the customer service in here was non-existent. Forget being greeted, let alone receiving voluntary help. I still managed to get some good stuff at a very affordable price. I did decide to swing by their other location at NewPark Mall later in the day and have to say that that location is WAY cleaner and the customer service is much better. read more

Very rude workers here, was almost knocked over by one sales associate who was rushing out of the doors to see a friends car, he didn't say anything like, oops, excuse me, or sorry" and didn't even try to go around me but kept on his path. Well before leaving, I figured out why the workers are so rude, I almost got knocked over by a black female working here, possibly the manager, she almost ran into me and didn't move or say anything either line it is their right. Frankly this is the worst big 5 I have ever been to. The female employee I interacted with whose name starts with Naji was unwilling to help, at times plainly rude. At the end I as a customer actually felt intimidated even talking to her. Most of the big5s I went to have great employees and I only had good words about them. This one is the only exception. This was my first time in a Big 5 Sporting Goods store and I must say the experience was rather mediocre. The store is way too small given the amount of items there are in the store. It just felt like I was in someone's garage sale, and that's not a good thing. There are no bikes on display. They can show you their binder of bikes but unfortunately they do not come pre-assembled, nor can you try out bikes in the store. Some of the prices seem kind of high - a razor kick scooter was $45 when I saw a similar model at Target for only $30. Meh. read more

Why is Big 5 known by me to be: not well organized, a bit messy, crowded with too much merch. in too small a space, etc.? I'm not the only one apparently. The staff was friendly and tried to help, but we could not purchase a plain skateboard or a particular game. They did refer us to other retailers nearby however. Points for them. I decided to go to Big 5 Sporting Goods to Purchase items which would of cost almost $300 worth of Products. I was told by the Cashier I could not be in the store without a mask due to Covid-19. He stated it was a Corporate decision to do this but I read the Policy which actually leaves it up to the employees discretion. Corporate did not say they require you to wear a mask. We had a mishap at a store in No Cal that damaged the top of our Suv / Escalade. Contacted Josh in the corporate office about this. He told me to get an estimate and submit it to him with pictures. Shortly thereafter, he told me to get it repaired and they would reimburse us for the damage ( $ 1500.00+ so not cheap ! ) We did, and he sent a check yesterday for the reimbursebent. This is one of my goto places in Fremont for any sports goods. The experiences were really good whenever I visited. There were people around to help you with questions. I could remember that couple of times I had to wait for someone to be available to help with the items. Goods are quantity and almost all good brands are available there. Checkout is always slow. Not sure why, that's always the case. Overall it's a good place for sports and camping goods. read more

This location is really packed, you can barely walk thru the store without bumping into racks. A lot of the listed prices are not current which is kind of a pain. The customer servuce we received was really friendly. The cashier joked with us about buying both Raider and Niner beanies and engaged in small talk that was polite as we shopped around and waited in line. read more

This store was HORRIBLE !!! FIRST off moment I walked in the HORRIBLE smell if feminine hygiene (or lack there of) hit my nostrils. Then this REALLY rude, young African American woman working at the store was sitting on a wooden bench by the register acting as if she couldn't be bothered then rudely asked what I wanted. I said I needed help in the firearms section, she reluctantly got up from her bench with a sigh and walked over to assist as if I was bothering her. I inquired about ammunition as she rudely and abruptly answered before I could finish asking, this was the SECOND TIME being treated like this. I realized I could NO LONGER stand her Sha nay nay from Martin attitude or the HORRIBLE smell that seemed to be coming form her and I left. I always shop for my fitness items here and never have a problem with using coupons. Today however I pulled up the retailmenot coupon expires today and the cashier says I cannot use it. Doesn't bother to even try and scan it to see if it works. Says I can check big5 website or my email for more accurate coupon that shows more information. A bit frustrating. read more
