Too bad we didn't know about this store until it is about to go out of business! It's an old store in Mountain View; situated on El Camino Real with its own parking lot at the back. The staff was friendly and welcoming. It was fun shopping inside the store. It carries mostly second-hand stuff, but it has the batter baton, the military attire (I did not know the army olive green shirt is this tough!), even the sniper suit! Then the outdoor stuff, including military dry meals packs loaded with protein! The prices are reasonable, those pilot jackets are only 60 bucks! I asked the staff where they got the military stuff, he said years of accumulations as well as government offloading. I felt like the store could totally survive next to those Hollywood movie studios. What a cool place to visit! read more

Greetings to all, this is my first time to this Surplus store, let's see how it went: Parking is in the area is a good amount. Inside the store itself is a modestly lit establishment , and it works for what they are trying to do. They have a Vast assortment of Military and Public Safety ( clothing- equipment- shoes- supplies) . The prices are reasonable, with many choices in stock to choose from. Not really military surplus of TODAY. Lots of their surplus is from decades old surplus. If you want DCU or BDU or Vietnam era stuff they will have it. If you're looking for UCP or OCP or Multicam....... You'll find a thing..... but it'll mostly be some 3rd party product that has a terribly off shade of colors to mimick UCP OCP and multicam. So if you're looking to up your gear with modern gear and camo you'll have to really be lucky to find something that isn't almost purple looking "UCP" or nearly orange looking OCP/multicam. You'll also find some variant of multicam for a different country like the UK. Something an American troop wouldn't be authorized to wear. Wish this store would clear out most of the old stuff and get on board with today's gear. Steven's creek surplus has more modern day Authorized gear to choose from. So at the end of the day it depends what you're looking for. Everyone I come to this store I walk out buying nothing because they don't have anything I can use for the reasons above. If you get lucky and find a real US authorized piece of gear or uniform piece it'll probably be overpriced or a good price but it'll be like Extra Small Short or 2XL Long size. I wish to spend more money here but they just have not really gotten on board with today. The two gentlemen that work the register are swindlers and conmen. There have been two instances which I'd like to share. The most recent was that I had made a large purchase, Abdi gaffed up the price on two items, one of the items he removed the tag and kept it so I couldn't verify, they do this often trying to keep the tags after fudging up the numbers. I came back to get reimbursed on the 5$ difference, and to exchange an item. The item being exchanged was 6.99 plus tax and 5$ for reimbursement on the item that he "accidentally" input the wrong info. He mumbles about how I will not get reimbursed for the tax, which is not legal and is a bad business practice. 24.99 plus tax is around 2.31 so I paid 27.30 cents but only was reimbursed 5$ and not 7.31 the item I exchanged for 6.99 did not include tax. Even worse he tried to say that it was 10$ store credit I'd get to another purchase. The total with tax should have been around 14.80, he low balled me and said 10$ back and out of frustration I wasn't thinking clearly and said it was 11$ when it should have been 13$ not including tax. He then goes to the side room next to the cashier and speaks with his partner 5$! He came back for 5$ trash talking, I could hear him through the paper thin walls. He comes out after trash talking with his partner and tells me 10$ store credit and no reimbursement for tax. 5$+6.99 is 11.99 I settled with 11$ because I was furious on the inside with his deception and couldn't think clearly, trying to keep my composure. His aggressive reaction convinced me that he were to get the item back that I was reimbursed on the price difference of 5$. The item was 24.99 I got 5$ back, and he took back the item. After getting a shake at the Baskin Robbin's Nextdoor I realized I was CONNED a 2nd time! I ran back in the store and told him that the item I got reimbursed for was 5$ store credit and that he didn't reimburse me for the full 24.99, so that item was mine. He tried to convince me that the item was not mine and that he had "reimbursed" me for the mishap. I calming explained that he only gave me 5$ credit and not 24.99. To sum this debacle up, I was ripped off came back and was offered less credit than was charged and they didn't reimburse me for the tax. 6.99+tax and the 5$ credit on the 24.99 that I paid 2.31 in taxes that I wasn't refunded on. He said 10 at first and I said screw it 11$ is fine. Then after buying something else and leaving to get a drink, I realized that I got duped a SECOND TIME! The last time I visited I was looking at hats, from the moment I walked in he starts mumbling in Arabic giving unnecessary attitude, I asked him for assistance to see an item on a place where it can only be reached by a ladder, he begrudgingly helped. After words he starts mumbling in Arabic and was literally farting non stop while stocking the shelves. When I bought a hat, they tried to keep the tag. Upon looking at others reviews where they "fudge up the numbers." it seems to be a recurring pattern. Abdi is a compulsive liar and will lie to your face, I asked him if a hat was made in the USA and he said "YES IT IS MADE IN THE USA," then I pointed no it's labeled "MADE IN VIETNAM." During the same time I bought a hat, which they tried to keep the tag after purchasing. I can't recall the other middle eastern man's name, but he conned some techie into buying an overpriced benchmade knife, he had a long conversation about family and how great it is to have a daughter and convinced this man to buy an overpriced knife, which he offered a "hefty discount" even with the discount it was still over retail price. After he left they were ecstatic about the sale talking to each other in Arabic/English about how they ripped him off. I took my time browsing, by the time I left I saw the same man on the parking lot furious, he probably checked the price on the internet and realized that he got conned with a smile. If you want military surplus items you are better off shopping from the many online retailers. Not only are there items overpriced, they will fudge up the numbers, then have the audacity to give attitude and disrespect while talking trash in Arabic right in front of your face. From other reviews many people have experienced predatory business practices here. The one redeeming thing of this store was the gentlemen named Mike, he's never checked me out, I'm not sure if he's the owner, a partner, or just a worker, but he was helpful and not rude. Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice shame on you. They lost my respect, and I will not patron a business that not only rips people off, but has the audacity to talk trash for correcting an issue that they messed up. I wasted gas just on the principle to see if they had any honor. They lost my business, my respect, and I am reporting them to the Better business bureau. read more

Have enjoyed coming here for years. But beware if you ever possibly need any meaningful customer service especially for exchanges or returns. Within just one visit I somehow managed to become involved with THREE different disputes for ridiculous interpretation and application of their promotional and customer services policies! In all three cases, the manager chose to argue and defend, ultimately quibbling over what amounted to $15 in one case and $25 in another. In the latter, they claimed NOT to remember I had come into their store just three days prior and since it was "so long ago" they could not honor refunding me the $25 they overcharged me for an item I in fact did not purchase but their clerk had mistakenly rung up for me and failed to remove from my sales transaction. I am completely astounded they would choose rob and lose a longtime customer over just a few dollars. When I checked their Yelp reviews I see this is very consistent with many others' experiences. Very sad, since I really wanted to support the small, local business over the big box and online stores. But seriously, in a day and age where we have quick and easy buyer protection and returns possible through Amazon, it may not be worth the risk to go with this particular store. Arrived on a Tuesday at 10:10am and it wasn't open, the two employees were waiting outside the front with me until the owner/manager showed up at 10:15am. One of them asked what I was looking for and said they did carry what I am looking for...collapsible water jugs/carriers. Located on the corner of Mt. View Avenue and El Camino Real, parking in the lot behind the store and side streets. Definately not REI nice but useful and practical. This is the place I go when I start freaking out when I hear of an impeding earthquake or my friends in Belize and Florida are about to experience a hurricane. Yes, I can get everything cheaper on the net but I want it now! The prices are pricey but the conveniency is what I am paying for. The staff is helpful, the stock is pretty ample with plenty of selections and the place is pretty well laid out. Wish it was a little brighter inside. So now my friends have been sent their emergency care packages, to the envy of their local, unprepared, going to the local high school gymnasium and eating Red Cross peanut butter and jelly sandwich, friends. I have my emergency case in my car and the office and home. My friends mock and tease me but guess who will be at my house after an earthquake/mudslide/tsunami. My boyfriend and I often like to go to army surplus stores because for him he's into military jackets and hats and as for myself, I have a grandfather as well as a elderly client that I'm a caretaker for who are Vietnam army veterans that I always buy hats and patches for on special occasions. Purchased a few knives from MVS. I got a decent sized knife collection. Sometimes when I drive by MVS ill stop by and see if they got anything new. Their prices are a bit expensive but that is to be expected from a retail store. People don't understand that when you purchase from a retail store you are paying a premium to be able to see and touch the product before you buy it. People will buy stuff online and when it arrives not as expected they waste additional time returning the product then going and buying another one. That time wasted is the unseen premium. read more

@ checkout, I offered a "store credit" receipt-voucher provided from the Mountain View Surplus, Campbell location that went out-of-business to the Mountain View location for $40. The cashier immediately dismissed this voucher & stated "different location" but continued to say some of the items from the Campbell location were relocated to the Mountain View store (maybe some of those same items that I exchange for the voucher may have been there) and they share the same business NAME. The owner/employee was extremely adamant that he was NOT going to accept my legitimate voucher. As a business owner/employee, I would recognize this dilemma and maybe offer a full credit or partial credit out of good faith/gesture and/or just simply good costumer service (or perhaps offer 20% of the item, I paid full price for) which unfortunately, I didn't receive any of these favorable options. I have shopped at this army surplus store a few times now and it serves its basic purpose: providing a selection of outdoor gear, various paraphanalia from armed forces worldwide, and a wide variety of utilitarian, often obscure accessories. On a few recent trips I bought some canvas duffle bags, carabiners, and shoulder straps. Three stars for providing the above. Minus one star because the customer service here is so TENSE and UNFRIENDLY. On one trip I had purchased a small bag that had been mis-priced too low and the cashier proceeded to yell and argue with one of the employees about it, then grudgingly agreed to sell it to me at the marked price (gee thanks). On my last trip, they left the security tags on some on shoulder straps but I didn't notice until I was home. The tags rendered the straps unusable, so I had to make a special trip back to the store the next day to get them removed. My expectation was an apology for my trouble. What I got was an annoyed look, then silence as the cashier (owner?) removed the tags. I can't say I'll be coming back here unless they have that unique, needed item that nobody else has. read more

I've been a customer of this place for years not only when I was single but with my boys who have picked up backpacks, sleeping bags, and all kinds of fun kid stuff for years. The guy at the counter today upset me and my boys terribly today. My 9 year old brought to me a toy gun that makes an amunition like sound. The packaging on the outside said "try me" so that you can hear what it does. Well, as it turned out, the batteries inside were dead. I asked him if it worked and could he put in batteries that would work - after all, you are buying the gun with presumed "good" batteries. So, he walks around the corner and comes back with a baggie full of batteries and pops 2 in and presses the button and says, "it works." I said, "Great, thanks." He then takes them out and tells me the toy is only $6.99 and to put my own batteries in. I said, can't you just thrown these in - the gun is supposed to come with batteries." He says, "I can't do that." He then reminded me again that the gun is only $6.99 so why don't I just put my own batteries in. This really burned me up. I've got a whole case of batteries at home. It was the whole principle of the circumstances that I just couldn't believe he was unwilling to supply 2 batteries when they are supposed to come with. Even though my boy was disappointed he didn't get the "cheap" gun, he learned a valuable lesson that we do not patronize places that don't treat us with good service, not to mention rude. Okay, so Military Surplus.....they've got it, and lots of it. Literally you can find almost everything here. Some used, all fairly priced. Whatever the reason you're looking for used military gear (airsoft/paintball, re-enactment, costume, soldier fetish play), its here! They've got a huge selection of BDUs (battle dress uniforms) from the WWII era to current (limited on the digital). That includes all the caps, covers, and boonie hats for your cranium depending if you're looking for marine or army style. Even boots from black leather with drain holes to the lighter weight desert boots. If you want a helmet, they've got steel, kevlar, and heck...plastic replicas! I was happy to find a plastic replica of my old K pot. The PASGT (Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops (used between 80s-1999) helmet. Don't get the plastics and real ones mixed up now. Even got the covers and straps too. Need a vest? They've got a great selection here. Tactical vests, load bearing vests, and even flak jackets. They've got the M1952& M1969 frag vests for the vintage look and the PASGT Flak vest for something a little bit current. They rent them out too at half the price. (Full price $175-$250). Great if you're making a film, reenactment or play airsoft/paintball. Lots of this gear can use for camping too. Compasses, tents, sleeping bags, shovels, MRE's (meals ready to eat), bug spray, and so on. Prices are fair. I've seen the vests at better prices elsewhere. Service is pretty good. They've been informative with the gear so far. If I find out differently, I'll update this, but otherwise, you won't be disappointed here! read more

I thought I'd give this place another try, as it's only about a 3 minute walk from where I live. Unfortunately, I encountered the same deceptive practices that I have on my previous visits (from the owners/managers again). They are just incredibly inefficient when it comes to honesty, communication, and basic customer service. Instead, I drove down to Stevens Creek Surplus and made my purchases there. Unlike many so called surplus stores that only stock Chinese copies of military duffel bags, tents, etc, this place has a lot of real military surplus from the US and other countries. They also have lots of copies, but they dont pass them off as genuine GI stuff. Prices are generally OK, with a few smoking bargains if you fit an odd size. Right now they have super high quality two piece red/orange military rain/foul weather gear, with a flotation coat brand new for $39, but only in a med-small size. This quality would cost you hundreds elsewhere like West Marine. Another bargain are 6 ft mine laying parachutes for about $12. They make great sea anchors or speed drogues for boats. They also get some really oddball stuff, like unused Chinese parachute harnesses and US Army interlocking antenna mast pieces. The staff knows the inventory and can help you find what you need. Hey, if you believe the doomsayers and are going to go into a full right wing survivalist mode, or are a SWAT wannbe, this is your place. If I had revied this place about 15-20 years ago, I probably would have given it 5 solid stars. Now, this place has changed. Prices aren't what that much different from other camping/sports store. In fact, it's not even much of a "surplus" store. When you think of "surplus store" military comes to mind. Boots and some uniforms don't make a "surplus store" Plus expensive especially for some used items. In any case, I'm giving it one star only for the sales person who helped out when we purchased our item. On the other hand, I wanted to give a bunch of negative stars because of the manager. WHAT. AN. IDOT. We came back to return one item...a lock that locks ammo cans. He was upset that we were returning an item and advised us of his return policy. He should read his own return policy. A lock for an ammo can does not constitute a health hazard of any kind. I can understand if I were returning MRE's, but MRE"s a lock was not. We had receipt in hand and whatever else was needed for a proper return and he still gave a hassle telling us "becareful when you buys things." Okay, we will be careful and we won't buy things from this "surplus store." You want surplus? Go to The Mountain View Surplus in Campbell or even Stevens Creek Surplus store. They have a large selection of domestic and foreign military surplus with a smattering of commercial gear to help fill the gaps the surplus does not cover. If you know what you are looking at, you can get a great deal. Found a brand-new helmet cover for my Swiss M71--haven't seen anyone else with one since. The people are helpful and go out of their way to help you find what you want. Just don't go in there demanding a particular hard-to-get item--remember, it's a surplus store, folks--they will try to find it, but a lot of surplus is luck of the draw. And if it's current issue, they might have a used one that's good enough to turn in if you lost whatever was issued to you. Just don't expect to find a new one anywhere for surplus prices--by definition, current issue means it's not likely to be surplussed new in package--if you are looking for new current issue stuff, you are prolly gonna have to buy it from one of the rip-off catalog places. read more

Price gouging! The "sale price" on high-end knives I purchased turned out to be 50% more than easily obtained on-line prices (incl shipping). I don't expect the same price at a bricks&motor shop, but 50% is excessive on $110 knives. Their game is to price items at close to double market prices, and then mark them as "on sale" for a price that's only 50% over market. I walked in to say that the two knives I purchased were not going to work for me, but the clerk simply walked me over to the register and pointed at the clause on the beat up sign taped to the counter that said no returns on knives. That's all he could say. He didn't care how much I'd spent in his store -- didn't even ask. Recently went to Mountain View surplus with my friend Rick. Both Rick and I felt that the last time we came here which was eons ago, it was the better of the two between the one in San Jose and Mountain View. When we first walked in we were greeted by the owner. My friend had walked towards the back for a brief moment, and I had walked towards the label pins since that was my intent of going to the Surplus store. Seconds after I went to look at the label pins, I was greeted from one of the owners staff members (gentleman with a clean cut haircut and was wearing glasses wearing a :"GAME OVER" t-shirt). The gent and I had had a few good conversations along with my buddy who was oncoming seconds later. I was given advice for some of the label pins, and even a few stories behind the meanings of them. Rick had also purchased a few label pins, one of them being artwork from World War 2 Fighter Planes (pretty cool stuff if you ask me, and it doesn't hurt to have a sexy babe as a label pin!!!!). Rick and I both were pleased with the help at Mountain View Surplus. The owner is a fantastic man, very helpful and extremly fair. The owners employee was also extremly helpful as well. They both had a good sense of humor and even after closing time they were very patient with my friend Rick who tends to ask a lot of questions LOL. It's a little smaller than the Steven's Creek surplus store, but I can always find what I need at this one rather than making a trip out there. I have really no need to ever go in this store. I'm girly. I don't like dirt, I'm not a big fan of hunting, and the military irritate me. However I've walked past this store at least twice a week for the last 6 months. It was time for me to sneak a peek. And I was correct in my assumption that the entire store was foreign to me. But hey, now I know where I can find camping gear for all seasons. And I never knew about the extensive selection of knives available. Really, if you think about it, its a serial killer's dream. There are so many ways people could be killed by the products in this store. And the fact that its sitting in the middle of Mountain View is hilarious. Ever since I got into airsoft a few months ago I've been hitting up pretty much every military surplus store in the Bay Area, looking to fill out my kit. From that standpoint, I found this place to be a great store. They had a nice selection of tac vests, MOLLE pouches, gloves, helmets, and other accessories, all at very competative prices (a few pouches I saw were quite a bit cheaper than other stores for the same product). They had a great selection of BDUs, again at a good price. They even had a few camo prints that I've yet to see in any other stores, such as the TRU spec digital woodland. Sadly, the one camo jacket I wanted to buy they didn't have in my size :/ The area that I was most impressed by was their selection of bags. They have a great selection of different sizes and styles of bags, from traditional duffel bags, the fancy multi-pouch gear bag. I ended up picking up a German pilot's bag, which is really big, with plenty of room to stash all my stuff. All the bags were well priced, and a clerk at the store opened up the packaging for the different bags I was interested in to allow me to check them out. The only negative was a couple of the store clerks spent literally the entire time I was in the store talking about an upcoming high school football game they were going to play in. I'm a huge football fan, but not to the point that I'm ok with being totally ignored as a customer while in a store. Fortunately the third of the 3 clerks when I was in the store came out from the back shortly thereafter and helped me out. Overall : very nice selection of gear for your airsoft kit. Their actual airsoft guns, like most surplus stores I've seen, looked pretty suspect (if you want to buy airsoft guns, go to a dedicated airsoft shop). Good prices on all the gear they stock, and a nice selection of different items that I've only seen at this store. This place is worth a look! read more

There's also this one crazy old guy who rambles off schizophrenic stream-of-consciousness soliloquies like nobody's business. Lots of oddball supplies, from MREs, survivalist gear, camping gear, army surplus stuff, army vintage stuff, party hats (BIG hat selection), hazmat suits, gas masks, knives, guns.... etc. You never know what you're gonna find. Price difference between here and the Steven's Creek surplus store vary--it's cheaper on some items and more expensive on others. Can't believe I'm just getting to writing these guys a review! I've been a regular for years. It's less of a traditional surplus store, and more surplus+camping+awesome hats. If I've ever needed to do a return, the workers have always been friendly and helpful, doing their best to make things right. Some other reviewers recommended hitting up the more expensive stores first, but I can't understand it that at all; MV Surplus has most everything you need for way less. Come here first, and THEN go pay out the rear at REI if you really have to. Anyway, good service, great prices and selection... give it a shot. read more

In the Army! That is what it feels like when you step in here. Like, HUT HUT HUT, soldiers get your gear and get ready for take off. Kind of intense when you see the camouflage outfits. But this place is really full a buried treasures. You can find a lot of cool things here. I go here mainly for their camping gear. They offer discounted prices for items that you'd pay more at REI. Not a place I will return to. I have stopped in here to get uniform gear for volunteer work I do - bought some BDUs which turned out to be defective. Came back less than 30 days with receipt - wouldn't take it back. Offered me minimal discount if I bought another pair.....no thanks. Just wanted to take a minute and let everyone know that this place is awesome. From a huge selection to the knowledge of the products they sell to a very nice and respectful customer service. I have been bouncing 21yrs in the night life of SF and have ran many clubs with allot of security guards and always looking for a location to meet our needs for our gear and this is the spot to go. I definitely recommend this location. They have a huge store with crazy amount of selection. And if they dont have it, trust me they can get it. The store has a nice selection of backpacks, camping gear, airsoft gear, hunting knives, clothing, etc however it is very overpriced. If you know what you want, chances are you're better buying it online. Many things (for example, pocket knives) are clearly marked up and then put "on sale" to make it seem as if it's cheaper than other places. The customer service is also kind of iffy, the people who work there aren't very chatty and won't really try to help you. tl;dr: Lots of overpriced things and not very helpful customer service. read more

I can spend hours in this Surplus store, the amount of stuff they have is crazy. Although the store isn't too big, they have stuff packed in there, from the floor to the ceiling and they have storage outside that you normally do not see. There's so much stuff here I'm not even gonna list it. I play Airsoft and this is one of the best place to get your BDUs and gear. Their vests are used but are still very functional. Their staff is very helpful and will help you until your satisfied if you mention you're in law enforcement or in the service, which is cool. Also they make dog tags, my wife had them made as party favors for the kids during my sons bday. I believe they were only like $1 each which isn't bad. read more
