The El Segundo location of Big 5 Sporting Goods seemed to be more of a miss than hit in this visit. Though I arrived with almost an hour still left before closing time, the staff seemed to maybe want to already be on their way out. Several loudspeaker announcements of, "We will be closing soon," rang out, even with 45 mins left available. Many of the racks were out of order and rather disheveled. I was also saddened to find that many items were sold out in needed sizes, with only larger sized items still available. One item that I needed was a small wrist brace, but only one was available in that size with the others available in Large. I did find that the brace was good for the value, but was still put off by the state of the store. Also, the staff was chatting around the floor a lot, leaving me waiting at the register for several moments without assistance. Hopefully next time will be better. read more

I have been coming here for many years and have consistently received the worst service . The last time I came here the manager was so rude that I have never returned because of his nasty attitude . Not sure if there is new management, but today the service was excellent . Shawn in the shoe department was very helpful . He immediately asked if we needed help . The good thing about Big 5 that makes it better than Sports Chalet, or Dicks would be their sales. There are always sales on shoes, sports equipment, and other stuff in their circular. What I like about this Big 5 however, is that there are always GOOD deals on their Tennis Rackets. For some reason I love Tennis Rackets. They're so nice. Very bad customer service I went in at night time to find some sleep to protect me from the Sun I was trying to see which ones are good. Something missing! Purchased a tent on sale at the end of the summer last year. Fast forward to this summer and the first time opening the box. I had a barbecue, which was the perfect time to use the tent. The tent was taped up and missing the top shade piece. It's not cool when you open the box thinking you are about to use a new item! I went into the store today to I inquire about returning the tent. Was told that they may be able to assist. I will need to look for the receipt or the charge on my credit card. I also went in today for a pair of water shoes that were on sale. When I got to the register, they rung up a higher price. I told the cashier that I believed the shoes were on sale. I waited on her to respond but she didn't say anything. I opened my phone to find the advertisement while she looked forward with a blank stare. I took a minute to figure out that although I had the same brand, it was a different shoe and not on sale. The cashier not responding was a bit weird and rude all at the same time. If I were the cashier, I would have merely explained the difference in the shoe and that the particular shoe I chose was not the one on sale at this time. Maybe I'm expecting too much! So decided to try another big 5, since my bf wouldn't accept that my Sasquatch feet were not feeling the Asics at the Torrance location. He was convinced I would find a good pair in El Segundo where he bought his... and he was right, now I owe him a Gatorade lol. Browsed around the shoes and immediately found another version of Asics and new balances that I thought had good quality. The associate David kindly let me know if I needed any help to just call him. He ended up having to help someone else by time I needed to try on a couple pairs but another associate Caesar (hope that's how it's spelled)also kindly assisted me. While I was trying them on, they would check up & ask how they were fitting. They also were talking about the world cup series and my bf and I got into the conversation lol Caesar and David were def on top of it, aiding every customer in a professional, friendly manner. So the amazing service doesn't end there. Lol I told my bf I'd meet him at the register while I asked for the shoe associates' names and when I walked up to the register, Jenny the cashier was commenting on my bf's tee, which made me laugh and she had a huge smile. While we were paying, there were a couple guests that were leaving and by the exit, there was an employee William who asked if they found everything okay. They told him they couldn't find anything in size 14, and he informed them of other locations that might carry a broader selection and was genuinely trying to assist them. Before we left, I had to tell Jenny that this Big 5 has superb service! Doesn't hurt that we found the Asics we were looking for and my bf ended up buying a pair of Nikes and a set of hiking boots for myself, which we didn't plan on purchasing. 3 good quality shoes for almost $140, sounds good to me! This is my favorite local Big 5. Reason being is that's it's pretty large and organized. Every section is separated in a way that is visually appealing. I'm always able to find what I need without bugging the sales associates or employees (who are usually scarce in Big 5 retail stores). Parking is plentiful. Prices are usually much better than at competitor sporting goods store. Always check Big 5 first. If you join their email program, you will get a 10% off coupon. read more

*This is my first review as a Yelp Elite! (: I convinced my mom to drive over to this Big 5 last night after dinner since we were in the area. I just wanted to take a quick peek and see if they had the LA Kings t-shirt my boyfriend wanted. Its been a few years since I last set foot in this store so I truly forgot how spacious this place is. Its so much bigger than the one in Torrance! They have tons of merchandise and its all neatly displayed. It took me a little while to find where their fan section was (since it wasn't marked or near the front of the store like at other Big 5 locations) but I did end up locating it, towards the back of the store near their shoes. The Kings section here is VERY limited - they only had one style of t-shirt, a fleece blanket, and a mug. Pretty disappointing, but I have to give them some credit since the t-shirt was exactly what I wanted and they actually had the size I needed! Great place to go for sneakers (does anyone still say sneakers?) or walking shoes. Occasionally there are some discount coupons available through their website or if you sign up for their email. Last time I was there, the woman in front of me had a 20% discount coupon on her phone. Note that these coupons are not valid on everything in the store (mostly good for all-age-group-sports-equipment, if you know what I mean). If you find a shoe you like and it's not on sale, wait a couple of weeks and it probably will be. One thing I don't like is how crowded all the sections are with racks all over the place. Definitely feel like a mouse in a maze, and in most cases, never finding the cheese. But, if they have the item you like and it's on sale, it's usually a great deal. Good luck! read more

I just purchased an umbrella this evening and watched the store manager tell a customer "he was lying" about a receipt . From what I could tell the customer provided the wrong receipt by accident and just needed to sort through his other receipts to find the correct one. I over heard the manager use the word " liar" twice. The young lady who assisted me was GREAT I think her name was Elizabeth. My suggestion would be that the store manager use a better choice of words or give the customer a chance to get his act together. I called before going, I ask if they had anything for Golden State Warriors, shirts, hats etc. The lady who I spoke with didn't have a clue who that team was and what they had in stock. She left me on hold and completely forgot about me. I was put on hold for about 7 mins until I got upset and called back like dude, what the heck? Apparently, she couldn't find any of her fellow associates to help her. So you leave the customer hanging a length of time? I'm glad I didn't waste my time going to the store. If she couldn't find her associates to help her...I wasn't going to either. And it turns out, they had nothing for the GSW. I would Like to thank Brad and Judy for the great customer service last night. I was looking for some golf shoes that were on sale and I could not find any in the size that I was looking for. The sales person in the shoe department showed no interest in helping me locate the shoe in me size by checking in the back and just checked the shelf stock. I went to the front check stand and was greeted by Judy and Brad who went above and beyond to try to locate me size in the store before sending me to another location. After several attempts of going back and forth from the front of the store to the shoe department in the back of the store, Brad was successful in finding my shoe in my size. Small, old looking and scuzzy BUT they have a great selection and I found lots of high end items on markdown. The big plus though was that on a Sunday afternoon there was plenty of friendly, helpful staff there which is different from most other stores where you can't find anyone to answer even a simple question. One employee even helped me search for the right color and size socks and didn't give up until he found them. I went to the fishing dept. looking for a specific bait and paced back and forth about 4 times in the same aisle.... none of the employees approached me and asked me if I needed help. Again, these were young employees running the place. Meanwhile, I continued to look and found my merchandise, took it to the front counter to ring it up. The yound lady had no smile on her face, she looked kind of "fed" up or had an attitude as if she wanted me to get rid of me so she can go to break. This is the biggest and most well stocked Big 5 I've been to. Of course I don't live in the area and my local Big 5 is about 1/4 the size of this one. We were on our way to Long Beach to drop off my little brother at LBCSU and were on the hunt for a small board for him to use at school. We ended up coming here and found the one he wanted on sale, score! I also picked up couple of Nike workout shirts that were on sale as well.
