We'd been struggling to teach our perfectionist 5 year old how to ride a bike and after talking to several SF parents facing the same, we realized, it's US! She needs a non-parent to teach her (not mom or dad!). A friend told me her son was riding after just a one hour lesson with José at Bicycle Solutions so I headed straight to their yelp page and website where I was able to book a lesson for the weekend! For littles they suggest a shorter lesson so an hour seemed perfect, but they have longer ones if needed. José called me pretty quickly and confirmed all the details. There's an option for him to bring a bike or you can bring your own. He explained how the lesson would work and how they would start out by taking off the pedals off her bike first. Once there on Saturday, everything went exactly as José indicated it would. He took off the pedals and he spent time talking to her about her school and her life and building trust and rapport. I also really liked how he taught her a lot about how the break works, which I think made her feel a lot more secure and in control. Once the pedals were off, she started practicing the gliding that she had struggled with prior on a balance bike. After nailing that he put the pedals back on and by the end of 60 minutes, she was riding a bike with no training wheels. I am truly so impressed. We sent a video to our friends during the lesson and I'm pretty sure they will be signing up their kiddo any day now. Spend the money! We have been trying to teach our son how to ride his bike for some time. We tried no pedals, then pedals, the towel method, everything! He would not listen to us, I mean he is only four, so understandable. Prior to my first lesson (Aug 8 2023), I hadn't been on a bike in 5 years (when I had an extremely terrifying ride to Ocean beach and swore off bikes forever) and had never been comfortable riding: I learned in my late teens and was a very shaky rider, clinging to the brakes desperately. However, when my daughters moved to a school that felt too close to drive, too far to walk (and not that convenient on public transportation), I decided it was time to get over my fear, not least because San Francisco (and my neighborhood especially) is a biking town. I had a 2 hour lesson with Anthony in Alameda: not only did he help me master some basics (e.g. how to make smooth turns!) but he had me cycling in traffic by the end of the lesson, a miracle in itself! On our second lesson, he came to the city and we biked the exact route I'd be taking for school, which was perfect for building my confidence. According to the website, he seems to be the only instructor that's closest to where I live. Jianhan is very knowledgeable and understanding of my learning level. He pickup my learning speed within 10 minutes! He is also patiently answered all my questions and wait for me to slowly pickup and absorb the knowledge to apply. It's been many years since I rode a bike. Previous attempts to learn on my own, or with a friend, didn't end very well. So, I was a bit nervous. But my instructor, Tim Oey, was wonderful! He put me at ease, and gave me a lot of encouragement at each step in the lesson. And by the end of the lesson, I was riding all around the really big paved playground area at a local school and having fun. It felt wonderful! The difference was that Tim really knows how to teach. He has tips and techniques that experienced riders know without thinking about, but that new riders don't. You can forget how to ride a bike, but you can also learn again. I'm glad I did this. Going for a ride tomorrow, to practice the skills I learned. Tim gave me a map with places that are good for new riders, to build up confidence. Practice makes perfect. I had two very nervous bike riders (ages 6 and 8) but in the lesson from Bicycle Solutions in about 30mins they were peddling and riding! We were absolutely amazed!! We have been trying to teach them to ride for years with no luck and decided lessons would be the way to go. They learned it so fast and easily with their method. Anthony was my instructor, and I took two classes with him: one 2-hour class in 2017, and one this past Saturday. I'm 29 and never really learned how to ride; my friends tried to teach me, but their "lessons" amounted to "just balance!" and "just pedal," which suffice to say, did not really help. Anthony really takes his time, and is very attentive to how you're riding, and gives personalized pointers to help you learn. He explains it in a way that makes it easy for you to figure it out step by step. After my first lesson, I could ride a bike, and it was a great feeling. I do highly recommend a second lesson; I was a little "swoopy" after my first lesson, but by the second lesson, I felt a lot more confident. John Ciccarelli was my instructor this past weekend. He was the best. He was very patient and was incredible at breaking down each step of riding a bike from mounting, coasting, riding, turning and getting off a bike. I am a returning rider -- not really having mounted a bike for 20-30 years -- and not necessarily known for having great hand-eye coordination or balance! At the advice of my medical provider, I was told to try less impact-heavy exercise like biking and swimming; and with COVID, many pools are not open. So I had to re-learn how to get back on a bike -- a bike that was fitted for my height/frame, which meant a bike with a seat that was high enough where my feet could not touch the ground as easily. All a bit scary after so many years. Long story short, John took everything very slowly and step-by-step. He was very good at demonstrating what the steps were so that I would remember when I tried them out on my own. I re-learned how to ride a bike in 1.75 hours. After 4 yours of struggling to teach our 10 and 8 year old how to ride their bikes, she was able to make a breakthrough with her patience, friendly approach and systematic teaching method.
