We just picked up our dog after her first test day at daycare at BHV. They do everything to make sure that the dogs are safe and comfortable. A requirement is that each dog goes in the first day and they monitor to be sure the new dog is confident and all dogs get along well. Barking Hound has literally been a lifesaver for me. My pups Hedwig and Izzy are loved, safe, cared for and happily exhausted when they return from playtime. My dog has separation anxiety so she's sensitive about where she stays when I'm gone and she certainly can't stay somewhere where she's in a kennel the whole time. Barking hound Village is so amazing. They emailed me personally with updates on how she was doing, remembered her name, and the dogs are never in kennels. The back room is all little white picket fences for the dogs divided off. You can bring them their bed and toys to make them comfortable within their little room during their stay. Did they take turns throughout the day going outside and playing. They have a great location central downtown. Most importantly the facility is very clean inside and outside. Coco always smells amazing when she comes home and the entire place when you walk in smells very very clean so you know they're taking good care of it and your dog is safe while they are there. I can always tell if Coco doesn't like a place when we show up because she'll start shaking, but she does not start shaking when I take her here- so that's a major sign this place IS doing it RIGHT! read more

We cannot thank the fabulous team at BHV Austin enough for the amazing role they play in our dog Winnie's life, and by extension our lives. Vanessa and her team are thoughtful, capable, responsive, and overall exemplary human beings who run a tight ship and do an incredible job. I would trust them with anything--the BHV Austin team was there for us in a very major way when my partner and I were completely overwhelmed with professional obligations for a months-long stretch in 2020 and ended up depending upon them almost daily for our dog's care. Their team was kind to us without a fault even though we were having a hard time managing our schedules and showed late more often than we should have. They had our backs when we badly needed help and a solution for our pup. We will always be grateful for their kindness and excellent service, particularly during that challenging time. For Winnie's part, she is invariably delighted and starts wagging *hard* when we ask if she'd like to go to daycare on weekday mornings. Winnie is not an easy sell, but she asks to go to BHV Austin at least 3-4 days per week. She now goes mostly at her own option but has barely slowed down from the time when we didn't have a choice but to send her daily. For all this and more, we are so grateful. I like em, and my dog likes em, so that alone is 4 stars. The staff is super nice and they love my dog, so no major complaints. They do seem a little scattered: I had reserved boarding a few days in advance and they didn't have my reservation, though they easily fixed that in seconds. They also forgot my dog's medicine, though I had buried it in his food bag too. They're a little more expensive than other places - especially when you add in the day care rate on top of boarding, but would happily have Karl stay with them again! read more

I take my dog Louie (King Charles Cavalier)to Barking Hound Village for daycare and boarding and he absolutely loves it! Whenever he gets in the car in the morning he knows exactly where he is going and when we pull up he is always so excited. The staff here is also very friendly and Louie loves seeing them when he comes in! Also, he always leaves super tired which is nice! I'm so happy I found a place that he can get playtime with other dogs and also exercise while I am away at work. They also post pictures during the afternoon of each dog which i really enjoy! The best part is that they stay open until 8pm on weekdays which allows you to be able to leave work and even run a quick errand if you need before you pick them up. Barking Hound used to be first come, first serve for daycare which was kind of difficult if you are working every day, but they recently switched to allow reservations for daycare where you can reserve the days you would like to bring in your pup ahead of time which is really nice! They do fill up quickly so just make sure you get in your reservations early! The daycare can be a little bit pricey, but if you buy packages it comes at a discounted rate. I would recommend the packages if you plan on bringing your dog a few days a week! Overall, great place to bring your dog if you are looking for a good spot that will give your dog the playtime during the day that they deserve! read more

This place has saved us on many occasions. We have 2 Jack Russell Terriers so they need to be active most of the day. One of our dogs is a little fear aggressive - but he's not that way with the staff there. It's like magic! The staff here is what makes this place! They don't just babysit the dogs - they treat them like their own dogs. They take such good care of our dogs that Lucy and Boz actually run to the door to get in! Since we take them there Mon-Fri, when it comes time to board them for a week or few days - they don't mind and don't get anxiety over it. Good Lord. Some folks need to remember that a dog is not a human. This is an animal that eats it's own throw up, and cat poop. A doggy petsitting/boarding facility need not look like a daycare for humans. Sure it needs to be clean but keep in mind there are animals, they smell like animals and poop and pee like animals....why would it smell any different? Would you rather have them light candles and spray febreeze? I am appalled that some people rate this place one star because the person at the front desk wasn't enthusiastic enough about seeing your little angel in the morning. COME. ON. Also, they are not dog trainers and they don't advertise as such, so it's not fair to have such high expectations. Sorry, I'm done with all that. I commute to downtown Austin and drop my dog off at BHV a couple times of week. I love their flexible drop off times, I can drop him off before work and I can pick him up afterwards and go run in the park. Every time we pull into BHV's parking lot, he whines with excitement, and is tired when I pick him up. Mornings are busy so they usually just take him and that's it (my poor fur baby doesn't get a cup of warm milk brought to him upon arrival, boohoo). The first few times I dropped him off I wasn't sure how he would react to the new surroundings, but they encouraged me to call throughout the day to check on him. They gave honest replies when I called - "Well he was pretty timid all morning but he's finally warming up to this border collie that's been real interested in him." When I went to pick him up that day, I met his border collie friend- they were indeed buddies. To top it all off, the price is awesome. $20/day - you won't get that anywhere else in downtown Austin, especially if you're one of those people that think you're dog is God's gift to doggy day care. I left my super active, kennel-phobic pup here for a weekend vacation. The girl who took him in was very sweet to him and he warmed up to her really quickly. When I picked him up he was exhausted and so happy. I knew they took great care of him and that he got plenty of playtime and exercise. And they don't keep the dogs in little kennels. They sleep in private pen-like areas where they can move around a little more. For whoever said that this place is only for aggressive and active dogs- I saw that they offer a "luxury boarding" for dogs who want a more mellow and private experience. The active-playtime boarding is a standard and I think you have to ask for the luxury if that is more conducive to your dog's personality. It is a couple bucks more per night for the mellow boarding but if you want that experience, I am sure it is well worth it. The people were really nice and knowledgable, they just might not have known your exact needs when you brought your dog here. Also, bring your own dog food. I do this anyway because I don't want my pup to taste something that we did not know made him sick. But they charge an extra $2 for house food. Just FYI. And one more helpful tip- I tried to book this place over the holidays and they were booked months in advance! This place is that good apparently. So plan ahead for a busy time of year! read more

I called on Friday to see if they could board my dog for the weekend. I am from Houston, and was visiting Austin for the weekend. They said no problem, that I could bring her in. I am very over protective of my 4 legged child. They let me walk into the large pen where Mable would be sleeping, and set up her blanket. When I went to pick her up she was out in the back playing. Once, I got her in the car she fell asleep. She slept the entire way home, and is still asleep. Pros: - Great pricing! $70 for two nights of boarding, and play time. - Great staff, who treats their guests as their own pet. Cons: - Parking, but that really isn't their fault. read more

So, I'm going on about a year since I initially took my pupperoni here, and she still loves this place. Because I was laid off and out of a job for a few months, my pup didn't get a chance to go here during that time. Once I got an income again, I started bringing her in for a day of daycare every few weeks. And you know what? When I walked in the door with my pupperkins, after not going for months, they knew her name. I've been introduced to people and forgotten their name 10 seconds later, but after months of not going, they knew my dog's name! I am blessed with a very social pup. If my dog could talk, she'd say "Later Mom" the minute I pull up into the parking area. She runs inside and starts sniffing everyone, and knows that she's going back to hang out with her peeps..uh, dogs. Because the puppernickle is like my child, if I had one inkling that anything was bad here, I'd never take her back, and tell everyone about it. But that's just not the case. She LOVES going here. She LOVES the staff. Oh, and because it had been so long since I had taken her, I called a few days before I was going to drop her off and left a message asking if they had her updated shot records. They called me back a little later that day (maybe an hour or so?) and let me know I needed to either bring in her recent vaccination records, or just have the vet's office fax them over. Barking Hound Village is an amazing business, with wonderful staff and clean facilities. It is great to know that my 5 month old lab puppy doesn't have to sit at home all day waiting for me to finish work. It's also nice to know that he is in the hands of people that love dogs and care about their welfare. I had originally planned to bring my puppy to work, but he was just a little too rambunctious to sit through the whole day. I visited Barking Hound Village and another place before deciding where to take him. When I visited the other place, there was only one person on site, the dogs were in metal gated kennels and loudly barking. I just didn't feel comfortable taking him there. So, I decided to go check out BHV. On our first visit we were warmly greeted, given a tour of the facilities, and discussed his typical day. Everything was clean and there were many people working I was nervous the first day, but seeing his tail wag as I dropped him off made me feel more comfortable. Over the past few months I have had a chance to talk to the staff and am confident I made the right decision. He still wags his tail once we get there and is excited to play all day. He comes home a little tired, but ready to either play or take a nap. I highly recommend BHV to anyone who has to work, but doesn't want their dog to sit at home all day waiting for them to get home. read more

Scout, my terrier mix, loves Barking Hound. We started taking her here after adopting and wanted her to get some socializing as well as find a place to board when needed - BHV has exceed my expectations! The staff knows my dog by name and she is excited and happy for pets as soon as she gets inside. They ask questions about food, how often, any other recommendations and notes that they should keep an eye on your dog for. In the afternoon they will also upload photos of the dogs from the day to their Facebook which is great to check-in to see how who your dog is playing with. I was a little nervous for the initial "trial day," but they sent over a detailed email about how my dog did and a photo. Since then, the staff has been great responding to me via phone and email for questions and letting me know about openings for daycare. Highly recommend! read more

We were referred to Barking Hound by a friend who takes her dog there and I'm really glad we were. It's really convenient to get to and the staff is always very friendly. I love that they post pics each day of the dogs- even though our little puppy Moose is sometimes camera shy or hes running around having the time of his life so they can't catch him on film! Their prices are affordable and he always runs to the door when we drop him off there which tells me he likes it. I do wish they gave you a progress report when they left if it were longer than just a day or two stay. In case any issues came up or they got a little cut on their belly from playing with their friends etc. But besides that I would definitely recommend either for their day care services or the overnight stays. read more

Let me first say I have never written a review for anything online ever, but when you come across a place like BHV Austin, you can't help but want everyone to know how amazing this place is. My dog has been going to BHV now for over 6 months, and I have never seen her get as excited as she does when we walk into BHV for a stay. My dog is also somewhat challenging (and probably needs more accommodations than the average dog), and BHV has been so incredibly helpful, attentive, patient and sweet with her. We used to go to another daycare in Austin, and the experience I had with them versus the one with BHV is night and day. BHV really cares about each individual dog & their individual needs, which was not my experience with the other daycare. From the very beginning, BHV has always put in the extra effort to make my dog feel comfortable & thrive there. BHV has also been extremely accommodating with me and my schedule, as I've dealt with constraints on my schedule for different things the past 6 months. Moreover, every person who works here is incredibly kind & professional, and you can really tell they care about these pups. If you're looking for a place to send your dog for daycare or boarding, you can stop reading reviews now and take them here, because this is the best daycare/boarding in Austin. I have been taking my dogs to BHV-Austin for over eight years. I know it is the highlight of their day, because as soon as they get out of the car, they run to the front door and wait for it to open (which is only a few seconds). My dogs run in and don't look back to say goodbye. They are in excellent care during the day and I have never had a problem. I know my girls are in a safe and secure environment, while surrounded by people that care for them. While the highlight of my dogs' day is at BHV, the highlight of my day is picking the dogs up and getting to interact with the super sweet and low-key manager, Vanessa. She always greets you with a sincere smile and regrets to turn your dogs back over to you. I keep bringing my girls back, however, for one reason. I really had high hopes for this place. Just recently moving from Atlanta, where BHV also has locations, I thought I would check it out based on some reviews my friends shared with me...they were in ATL. I first called, trying to get more info about facilities, daycare and any special requirements such as bringing your dog in for a "trial" day. Most places do this to determine the temperament of your dog so it can be placed with other appropriately matching dogs, and also to ward off any overly aggressive pups. This BHV had no interest in that and almost rudely told me over the phone that I would just need to stop by. Okay. So I bring coop in for a day of doggy day care. It is obviously my first time there. Walked in and immediately was grossed out by the uncleanliness of the place. I was not given the opportunity to even see what the environment was like beyond the front desk, which i think is kinda shady. Every other doggy daycare had been more than willing to show you where your dog is staying while you leave them in someone's care. As a matter of fact, it seemed like the staff was way more concerned about other things than the fact there was a new customer there willing and wanting to check out the place. Very uninterested in my dog. That bothered me. These are people I was paying to watch him and make sure he was safe. Another issue I am not a huge fan of, the set up of the playtime- goes like this- dogs play outside for 10-15mins then go in for a break to a kennel where they cool down. Ok that is alright considering it is 105 outside...but really should your dog even be playing outside at all in that heat? Why wouldn't you just seek out a doggy daycare facility that is climate controlled?? You know when you instinct just tells you something isn't right? Sadly, that is how I felt when I left there. I tried to be open minded but I ended up leaving Coop there less than 1/2 day because I just didn't feel comfortable. Yes the place would be very convenient for me logistically but a peace of mind is worth way more than convenience. read more

Alrighty. Let's update these concerns. Please read previous review for reference. Vanessa has called, personally messaged, and publicly responded to my review. E for effort. First: the vaccinations. Sure, the owners are responsible for keeping their dogs vaccinated. I with agree with that 112%. It is also the business's responsibility to ensure a healthy, safe environment that one can feel confident that when they board their dog there, they will not end up sick. I reiterate, never have I been asked for updated vaccine records....in three years. And no, they haven't called my vet to get them. Second: the food. I'll let this one go. Albeit I feed my dog dry kibble (how fresh does it really get?), and have witnessed my dog eat poop a time or two, I don't think he cares too much about the freshness. However, I appreciate that some dogs may be pickier than others, so....yeah. Just a little wasteful in my eyes, but I can't say it's truly a fault on their part. Third: as mentioned in the original review, my dog comes back smelling infinitely fresher than he used to, no doubt. However, previously, it was no simple "dog" smell, let me assure you. Regardless, it still doesn't change the eye infections. One of which should be in their log book that they say they keep, for the record, since I received a call about a "weepy eye". He got the eye infections regardless of your sanitization routines, not once, but twice. Fourth: the cut on his side. I could argue this but frankly I'm tired and really didn't want to have to justify my bad yelp review in the first place. The cut is there. It's ugly and deep. I think he'll survive. Bottom line is they didn't notice. Wouldn't you want someone to notice if your dog was wounded? Yeah, I know it's a lot to ask. Fifth and finally: Vanessa, I did not form this opinion of you overnight or from one simple encounter. I've had many encounters with you throughout the years, and you've been about the same every time. I've worked retail, waitressed, bartended, and now I'm a nurse. Believe me, I've perfected the glued-on fake smile, it's not that hard. Whether you're busy, stressed, or preoccupied with whatever else, be present. If you're too preoccupied with running the place, then you need another face at the front so you can run your business as you see fit. All I ask for is a smile, a thank you, a "come back and see us." The reason I explicitly named you is because I remember you, and being in the industry of making people happy, when you're treated like that, it sticks with you. I also remember the phenomenal staff members who do a fantastic job. (The girl with short blonde hair, LOVE her. The girl with dreads, also awesome. The gentleman whom I dropped my dog off with the most recent time was also stellar). They all greet us with smiles and seem genuinely happy to see us and thankful for our business. Which is why I find your comment about my dog being "a personal favorite" so disingenuous, because never once have you ever ever acted or made us feel that way. I apologize if you feel this is a personal attack; it's not. And if all those times you truly were that busy, that's unfortunate, and I do not envy the heavy workload you must have to be incapable of mustering a smile, it makes people feel unwelcome. Anyways, I think it's time we part ways, BHV. I do not write this review out of spite for my own experiences with BHV, I don't want this to happen to your dog, and changes need to be made. After all, my biggest concerns were the vaccines (which they admitted that they should be better about) and the eye infections/cut on my dog, which they "don't know what to make of". Barking Hound Village is a dog boarding and day care facility that sits just behind P.Terry's on Josephine Street. I've used them for both boarding and daycare, and they're great at both! They match your dog up with other dogs with the same activity level and size for play groups. All the dogs get at least five 30 minute play times during the day. They'll also give your dog his medications and his own food if you bring it for no extra charge. If you use their house food, it's an extra dollar a night. I've been taking my 2 year old lab here for the past year, and she loves all the play time. She's so tired by the end of her stay at Barking Hound that all she wants to do is nap when I get her home. That's totally fine with me because she's too worn out to chew up my curtains. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is that they've gotten so many new clients recently, so they're usually booked on the weekends for boarding unless you call way in advance. read more

They send out a monthly newsletter to keep you up-to-date and update their facebook page with pics of all the fun the dogs have their each day. As the Assistant Director of a private preschool, I know what I'm looking for when it comes to quality care (yes- I feel like child care and dog care relate) and that's what you get at BHV. We had left our boxer here, and he came back a nervous wreck. He had a scar, from surgery, that they assumed was from him being violent. They never called to ask if that was the case, and instead kept him segregated from the rest of the dogs. This happened a while back, hopefully a change in ownership has happened since. There are many good options for dog boarding in Austin, but this unfortunately is not one of them for larger dogs. read more

I have boarded my lab here for about 4 years and I have always been very happy with the way my dog was cared for. He is eager to go in the door when we arrive and always seems happy and relaxed when I pick him up. If you know your dog well, you can just tell when he or she has been well treated. I knew that the staff here were caring and compassionate but I didn't understand just how much they care until this week. My husband and I left our beloved dog Sam, a 14 year old lab, with Barking Hound Village for two weeks while we traveled to Germany. About halfway through his stay, Sam suffered a medical emergency. Unknown to us (or the vet), he had a tumor on his spleen which had burst. The staff at BHV discovered the problem immediately and quickly made the correct decision that he needed to be transported to the vet. They literally carried this 100 pound dog to their van and rushed him to the doctor. They called my mother (who was left with making the medical decisions while we were gone), for instructions and then later cried with her on the phone when they learned that there was nothing that could be done to save Sam. A week later, when I went by to pick up Sam's things, the staff met me at the door with tears in their eyes and refused to accept payment for a rather significant bill. This is the kind of people I want taking care of my pet while I am gone. In a difficult situation, they proved themselves to be professional and compassionate. BHV took care of our dog Luke for 10 years before he passed and now, 2 years later, when we bring our new dog they still comment how much they remember Luke. I like that and he loved coming here just as our 1 year old crazy Nola loves coming here! Even after we've moved 40 min away we still only use BHV. The only place in Austin that I will trust to look after my dog. They take the time to get to know your dog to make sure your dog is safe and happy in their care. They take the extra special step and post pictures of your dog on Facebook, I love checking out the photos while I am at work to know that my pup is having a good day. I know my dog has a great experience because she runs to the door when I am dropping her off. The staff is friendly, smart and very resourceful. read more

I cannot say enough great things about Barking hound Village. From day one they have all been so welcoming. My Frenchy petunia has always been such a laid-back dog, we call her a petunia the paperweight. But when I pick her up from daycare she is such an excited happy dog jumping around everywhere and loving on everyone. They remember her name every time we walk through the door. I wish I could bring her there every day that I work. I take my dog here almost every day - for a reason. The staff, the location (near downtown), the hours (open til 8). I respect the reviewers who say that the staff didn't fawn over their dog from the minute they arrived - I've seen some places where I'm not sure the people there pay any attention. But I can definitively say that is not the case here. They're busy here - but never so busy that they're not attentive to the dogs. The dogs get a lot of play time outside with other dogs and are not cooped up all day. With the growth of Austin they seem to be quite busy. There are other BHVs but I understand they are not all owned by the same people. So I can't speak for the others but if this team opens a new location I expect it will be excellent. read more
