Better Surfaces & Services - Flooring Near Me - Van Nuys, California

Our wood floors were last refinished 18 years ago, when we first moved into our 1958 house. While many areas had only minor wear, the area under the dining table had suffered a lot of damage, with bare wood exposed in several places. We were looking for someone to do a general buff and finish on all the hardwood, but also with a specific focus on fixing the dining area. Of the five businesses I contacted, four said they would not do a partial sand/stain, but would only redo all of the flooring, sanding and restaining everything, which would have been far more than we were planning on spending for this project. Wilmer of Better Surfaces and Services was the only one willing to work with us on what we wanted. He was very upfront about the potential issue with a visual difference between the restained dining area and the existing stained flooring, but also discussed how he would do his best to mix the new stain so that it matched as close as possible, and work on the transition area to minimize any difference. I hope the pictures show what an amazing job Wilmer and his team did. The pictures were taken at different times of day, but they are all of the dining area, which needed the most work. In fact, one of my relatives was thoroughly confused upon seeing the final result: she knew we had planned on just refinishing, but upon seeing the floor, thought they must have instead replaced the dining area with all new hardwood! In addition to the great work, Wilmer was very good about addressing all of our concerns and keeping us up to date on the work, as we had to be out of town during all of it. His employees were very conscientious about locking up our house when they were done each day (my friend let them in every morning). I still can't quite get over how beautiful and new our hardwood looks! Thanks for everything, Wilmer! read more

The absolute best! Wilmer and his team saved my floors after another contractor came out and recommended I rip out over 500sf of original oak floors. So glad I found this company. My floors now glow and have this unique grain you can't seem to buy anymore. His team was very professional and salvaged what they could considering these were previously over sanded. I'm very grateful for the work completed at a reasonable price and would highly recommend! read more

My laminate wood flooring had a bad nasty wax buildup that was long overdue for cleaning. I called Wilmer and he made a fast appointment with to assess the issue. He gave a me a fair/good quote & I made an appt. Leo (the tech) was on time, did an amazing job. I am very pleased. Both men were professional and nice to work with. I will definitely use their services when I need my floor cleaned again. Thanks Wilmer, Leo & Better Surfaces & Service. Caprice H. read more

We closed on our new house and the hardwood floor was in need for refinishing. Not to mention, the house has THREE different wood types, and colors! Wilmer was recommended by my contractor who didn't do floor refinishing. I got estimates from other companies-Wilmer was within (+/-) the competitive quotes. What made him stand out among others is his calm, laid back personality and realistic assessment. He had a challenge on his hands. Matching the color exactly among the differing wood types is impossible, but he was able to achieve a result that complemented each other. My husband and I are in a profession that requires attention to very fine detail, and Wilmer and his crew were very patient with us every step of the way in adjusting things to our preference. Wilmer's goal is to make sure his clients are happy. Wonderful customer service! read more

We had our hardwood floors refinished by Wilmer and his team recently and had a great experience. Wilmer is very communicative, organized, honest, and provides quality work. He explains the process and all the options well and worked with our schedule. Our floors look brand new and exactly how we pictured them with a natural look. He also went above and beyond, coming after the work was done to help put protection down on the floor for our things to be moved in. Overall, phenomenal experience and I am glad I went with Wilmer. read more

I am so glad my friend recommended Wilmer to me. His work is worth every penny! He is a professional and courteous gentleman. He and his workers work on your home like it is their own. Wilmer sits down with you and makes sure you are happy. He takes pride in his work. They pay attention to the little details, and that is what makes a big difference. I hired Wilmer for installing 3/4" thick hardwood flooring throughout my 1920's Craftsman house, and also for tile work in my bathroom and kitchen. Everything came out fantastic! I will always call Wilmer when I need any type of flooring or other surface work in the future. read more

The project was a complete success. Wilmer provided a complete contract that outlined all the details. All questions were answered prior to the project start date. All dates were met and he and his crew worked 7 days a week to complete our hard wood floor transformation. Great job! I definitely recommend Better Surfaces & Services. read more

Wilmer and team were outstanding and their work was phenomenal. I shopped around for prices and they beat the competition by far. We had old, salvageable wood underneath the carpet in our new home and they were not only able to bring it back to life...but replaced the few bad boards and matched them perfectly. They even custom built pieces to cover gaps and help the floor flow from one room to the next. It took 3 days and they came over the weekend which was SUPER helpful. There isn't a single person who walks into our home for the first time and doesn't mention how beautiful the floors look. Wilmer even took time out of his day to re-finish a single board after we had to pry up a custom piece in order to install our new front door. No charge, no hassle, just a really good guy. I recommend their services to everyone who mentions redoing their floors, with these guys you can't go wrong. read more

With regret, I found That when getting the information for Wilmer to Recommend to a friend... I had not left a review. A couple years ago I brought him in to install ceramic tile on what was a previously carpeted slab foundation. And quite frankly from everything to the price.. The speed and the workmanship... I would hire him 10 times over for any type of flooring that I would ever do. I find it very hard to trust people in the construction and refurbishment business because they're often with some Hidden Agenda and crookedness. my experience Wilmer I had none of that, and as I said before was incredibly overwhelmingly pleased with what he did for me. read more

Our floors are 70 years old and Wilmer made them look like they were installed yesterday. And neat as a pin the whole job. Totally happy to recommend to everyone read more

Wilmer and his crew are top notch. We purchased a 1930s home and they were able to sand and beautifully restrain the original hardwood. Our kitchen floors were destroyed but they were able to match the old hardwood throughout the rest house and installed new wood floors in the kitchen. Where there were holes, they seamlessly replaced with new wood. Everything is beautiful and consistent. I was impressed by the whole team's excellent ethic. Wilmer is committed to quality work and efficient work. They will work with your needs, budget, and timeline. If I ever need floor work done this will be the first number I call and the first number I'd recommend to any of my friends. You will not regret hiring them. read more

Initially, we hired Wilmer for the floors. He did such a good job that we handed him management of the entire home remodel. He is honest, friendly, professional and very hard-working. He assembled a team of contractors that were expert in their fields. The job was finished on time and looks beautiful. My wife and I are very lucky to have found Wilmer and would highly recommend him. You have all heard the horror stories about contractors - all my friends had them. But, thankfully, ours had a very happy ending! Thanks Wilmer and Team!!! read more

Let me just tell you that I have no words for the professionalism that Wilmer has. I had to remodel my mothers room, which was badly needed. I looked up flooring installation on yelp and came across many but one stood out, Better Surfaces & Services reviews and ratings were to top notch. I gave them a call and talked to Wilmer who was able to come in the next day and give me a quote. He was on time, explained everything with detail and the quote was very reasonable. I let him know that I needed the floor to be done as soon as possible and though he had no openings available he scheduled me and assured me if he had anything available before the schedule date he will let me know. Well he did. He was able to get me in sooner, his people were here on time, very professional and the work they performed was amazing. I really am very happy with the quality of work and service they offer. I definitely will call Wilmer again....HATS OFF to him and his wonderful crew!! read more

I hired Wilmer for my laminate floor and baseboard removal. I called a lot of flooring companies and he had the most reasonable rate. Since it's only for a demo job, I figured I'd go with the best rate. It turned out, my laminate floor was actually wood glued to the subfloor. He was very patient with this difficult job and was diligent to stay for more house just to get the floors taken out. He was also really nice and personable. Will definitely hire him for future projects. read more

We renovated our home and fitted a very expensive front door and a custom made stairs rail. Unfortunately they were made of different wood and the colour did not match. Wilmer was recommended to us by our trusted contractor, he came evaluated the problem and got to work for several days, he bleached the different wood five times to bring them to their lightest colour and then proceeded to stain them with several coats of varnish finely sprayed until they matched perfectly. A masterful job by an accomplished professional. After two other contractors attempted to carry out this job unsuccessfully Wilmer saved us from having to replace the front door and face the trouble and the expense of doing so. read more

I found Wilmer through yelp by reading the reviews and looking at the pictures of the work he had completed at different jobs. For me hiring someone for wood refurbishing from online was a big risk as I was very particular about the wood floor and wanted someone to do an excellent job in getting the wood grains put of the hard wood floor and make it look appealing to the eyes. From the first day till the day when the job was completed Wilmer did an excellent job. He was fully dedicated towards the work and understood what things I wanted to get done and how I wanted the final finish to look like. His team was proactive, efficient and fast in removing the carpet, taking the nails out and cleaning up the mess before start the sanding. There was a little damage wood identified when the carpet was removed to which Wilmer stated that he will get this fixed and the complete floor will look alike and I won't be able to feel any difference between the repair wood and the original wood and I took his word which was the best decision as when the floor was sanded and finished it looked alike and there was no difference seen in the repaired part and the original part. I fully recommend Wilmer and Better Surfaces for wood flooring and refurbishing services. The price was very reasonable and the job was excellent. Wilmer the owner will go an extra mile to get your work done with a smiling face and always there to help. read more
