My husband and I made a Sunday night reservation at Betsy to celebrate our sixth wedding anniversary. This restaurant has been on our radar since before the fires, but timing just didn't work out and we hadn't made it until now. Sam, our server is an absolute gem and was so helpful in helping us decide what to order. To be honest, we wanted it all! We decided on splitting three entrées between the two of us and went with the New York strip, the lemon ricotta gnocchi, and the halibut. You can absolutely taste the freshness of the ingredients and the thought and care that went into every dish. For dessert, we shared the burnt cheesecake and the berry cobbler. Chef Paul outdid himself on this cheesecake! I don't usually order the cheesecake for dessert only because I feel like cheesecake is just a cheesecake but this one had an interesting twist and I'm not mad about it. The interior is absolutely lovely and inviting. The fire from the kitchen offers a lovely ambience ! We had seats out on the patio. Keep in mind for those later reservations, Altadena can get a little chilly on the patio and I didn't notice if they had any heaters outside. Maybe heaters will come as we get further into Fall. I had the foresight to don a sweater. Tyler has really done himself and given Altadena something that is really quite special. 100% we will absolutely be back to dine at Betsy! read more

Betsy is probably one of the hottest reservations in town right now, and that's a statement to its cooking, as this part of Altadena can definitely be a trek for some. Betsy occupies a quaint and intimate space, near the main street of Altadena and right next to a burnt-down building. I haven't been back in this area since the fires, but it's hard not to be reminded of the devastation that occurred only about a year ago. There's some irony in that Betsy specializes in live fire cooking, but in this kitchen, it is so expertly used. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the dinner rolls, the caesar, the pork chop, the gnocchi, the carrots, and the cobbler. I always appreciate some housemade bread; these dinner rolls were baked to buttery perfection, perfect for dipping and soaking up some juices/sauces. The caesar was huge; yeah it's a lot to pay for a salad but the portion was enormous. It was indeed as bitter as the description indicates, but it has the umami with the anchovies and the parmesan. It's a great caesar salad, what more is there to say. I really enjoyed the pork chop. It was wonderfully tender and smoky; arguably the best pork chop I've had. The salad on the side provided a nice acidity to cut through the richness of the pork itself. The gnocchi was arguably our least favorite dish, but it was still quite good. Great lemon flavor along with a healthy shaving of Parmesan on top, all seared to nice golden brown. It was a bit heartier than I was imagining. The cobbler was a solid way to finish the meal. The berry compote was nicely layered into the cake, with a tart sweetness that wasn't too overpowering. I think the cake itself was a bit tougher and drier than I was expecting; my wife commented that she would've loved a scoop of ice cream to go with it, which I agree with. Betsy is about more than just the food, though. We went on a Wednesday night and it was jammed full. It felt like a community gathering spot for locals and foodies alike. In a town recovering from tragedy, Betsy felt like a reminder of what things were like before the fire and what things can still be. I will definitely be back to Betsy to enjoy the seasonal menu, and to support one of the best restaurants I've ate at in SoCal. read more

Boy, the food was phenomenal!!! I'm not a pork lover but that was surprisingly my favorite dish! The meat was glistening, juicy with a crispy top slightly soaked with vinegarette, pickled onion, and mustard seeds, covered with raw choy sum. The steak was also cooked just right, medium rare, tender, juicy, well marinated. Gnocchi was soft and pillowy, a little too much oil in there. The yellowtail carpaccio though, not a fan, slightly fishy, maybe switch it to beef carpaccio. The chocolate mousse dessert was simply yet addictive. Not usually a a cobbler fan but Betsy's cobbler was die for!!! Not too sweet, slightly warm, just the right amount of sweetness and tartness, another item we couldn't get enough of. Service was mediocre, utensils and plates were missing for desserts, no hooks for purses. Since the tables are small, maybe bring out a dish or two and not all the entrees. Non negociables: order the rolls and the wood-fired cheesecake. You will be so sad if you don't. The wine selection is overwhelming if you're not too familiar with wine, so ask your server for a recommendation. I had a glass of the Chenin Blanc and it was absolutely delicious. The porkchop was so tender that no knife was needed. The duck fat potatoes were crisp yet melted in your mouth, and I will dream of the lemon gnocchi for the rest of my life. Honorable mention to their Caesar salad with chicory. The vibe inside is loud and busy, but the candlelight smooths it out so well. My husband and I went to Betsy for the first time last night. I thought it was fine. Not spectacular, not bad. Fine. When we got there and checked in I was very excited to smell the wood fire oven. I told the person at the host stand, "wow it smells incredible in here!" He responded with "it tastes incredible too!" That made me VERY excited to try their food. Overall the food was pretty good but not exciting. We ordered the burrata, the gnocchi, and the salmon. The burrata was like every other burrata and tomato plate you've ever had. Tasty, those two things go well together, but nothing all that interesting. The gnocchi - same. Parisian gnocchi (pâte à choux based instead of potato based) got boring after a few bites. The salmon was good, the blistered tomatoes were great. The thing that stunned me was how huge the portions are. Our server told us that they recommend 4-5 dishes for two people. I heard the servers say this to every table. Double the number of people at the table + 1 is the number of dishes they suggest you order. I was expecting the portions to be on the small side. I know - most people complain when they go to a restaurant where the entrees are $50 and the portions are small but recommending 5 dishes! We would have left with so much food. I said to my husband, "goodness gracious I'm so glad we didn't order 5 dishes!" He just responded, "don't you know how capitalism works?" And chuckled. He clocked the upsell. I did not. I reserve five star rating for perfect meals, and we didn't have a perfect meal. As much as we enjoyed the dishes tonight, there was one that none of us liked. The crudo was way too sour and the dish tasted like somebody just cut a few pieces of raw hamachi and soaked it in very acidic citrus and served it. Everything else was great. Late review- Visited Betsy for dinner back in September 2025, for my 5 year anniversary. Restaurant had been open for a week when we went and overall we had a great experience. It was nice to see that the restaurant was able to come back strong after the horrendous Altadena fires. We wanted to dine at Betsy as a way to give back to our community, family and friends. The food was delicious, the chef was very friendly and talked us through our meal and the service was spot on. We sat at the chef's counter and it was nice to see all the chefs in action. The limited counter seating (I think just two seats?) is directly in front of the wood burning stove, so it is nice and toasty (which i personally love as i don't like being cold when I eat). I know this restaurant will shine (as it has been based on the foodie blogs) and will be a staple restaurant in the SGV for years to come. Nine months after my first and last visit to Bernee, I had another delightful evening at 875 E. Mariposa St. in the newly re-opened restaurant, which was rebranded Betsy post-Eaton Fire. It's easy to see why Betsy has since been named one of America's top new restaurants. Owner, Tyler Wells knows good food and community. The restaurant is beautifully designed and the wood fire hearth creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Note that if you're seated directly in front of the live-fire, it will get hot, so dress accordingly. The food at Betsy is exquisite. To start we ordered the Best of Season Tomatoes. The tomatoes were in fact, simply the best-- sweet, juicy, and the flavors were only amplified by the West Virginia salt, creamy burrata, and delicious cast iron focaccia. We then had a wedge salad with more amazing tomatoes, a wonderful blue cheese dressing, and freshly cracked black pepper that lingered on our tongues. I then had the Wanderer New York Strip steak with the hotel butter. It was perfectly cooked, tender, and the finishing salt was spectacular. My partner had the ricotta gnocchi with lemon, black pepper, and nice heap of Parmesan. The pillowy gnocchi had a delicate flavor, which was a nice contrast to the other dishes (though I'm personally partial to the steak and bolder flavors). By the time we got to the snap peas, with an almond crunch and St. Germain, we were already pretty full. The bright, citrus flavors were a delightful punch to our palates though we took most of the peas home. We had to save room for dessert! We went with the wood oven cheesecake, which was smooth and creamy with the most subtle hint of smokiness from the wood oven. Delicious! All in all, this was an incredible meal. The staff at Betsy couldn't have been kinder or more accommodating for our walk-in with 2 adults and 1 kid, but the food was hit and miss for us. We ordered the Dinner Rolls, the Daily Crudo, the Caesar, the Wanderer New York Strip, and the Carrots. The crudo (halibut that night) and the carrots were our favorites, both seasoned well and served hot, while the rolls were bland, the endives in the Caesar tipped the salad into especially bitter territory, and the steak arrived closer to lukewarm than sizzling. Curious to see how the menu evolves, but for now it felt more promising than polished and we left feeling like there are still some kinks to work out in the kitchen. This brings me no joy. I wanted to love Betsy. I really did. And as the courses arrived, I kept trying to convince myself that it was working. But by the time the steak came out, there was no more denying it: the food just wasn't good. The idea is great. The vibe is great. A bustling neighborhood restaurant with an unpretentious, live-fire menu that seems to promise simple things done well. That is exactly the kind of place I want to root for. But in Los Angeles, where live-fire, open-hearth, wood-fired cooking -- whatever you want to call it -- has really taken off, it's hard not to compare Betsy to places like Dunsmoor, Hatchet Hall, Chi Spacca, or even Darling. And the difference, at least on this visit, was clear: those places know how to cook over fire. Betsy did not feel like it was there yet. Dish by dish: The crudo started with beautiful fish, but it was swimming in what amounted to a pool of lemon juice and buried under salt. It takes a lot for me to say something has too much acid and too much salt, but that was all I could taste. The delicate fish was completely lost. The Caesar was fine. A good salad. The grilled beans were lifeless, waxy, and drenched in vinaigrette. If the beans had any flavor of their own, it was buried under the sauce. The potatoes were crispy and texturally very nice. They were roasted well, but again, oversalted. The dessert was actually very good. We definitely enjoyed it. That said, it is worth mentioning that what was described as a cobbler was not really a cobbler. It was closer to a berry bread pudding, or maybe a clafoutis. Still good. Just not a cobbler. But the real disappointment was the $155 ribeye. We splurged. And we were utterly let down. There were a few center-cut slices that were very nice, but as we started to poke around, it became clear that the cook was wildly inconsistent. Some pieces were straight-up well done. Others were essentially inedible, not because ribeye has fat -- of course ribeye has fat -- but because the execution was so uneven that large portions of the steak were more gristle than pleasure. The bigger issue was that this was the centerpiece of the meal, and it should never have left the kitchen that way. With the number of employees moving through the room -- at times it felt like there was nearly one food runner for every diner -- it was hard not to wonder how that steak passed through a cook, a chef, an expediter, and a server without anyone catching how poorly it had been executed. I'm sorry to say it, but we did not enjoy Betsy. I like the concept. I like the room. I wanted this to be a neighborhood spot worth rooting for. Phenomenal food, fantastic atmosphere and incredible service! Betsy is 10/10 and was unanimously voted by everyone at the table as "The Best Steak of the Year" I don't know how they manage to cook an entire restaurants food from just two wood burning fires and a brick oven, but they do it impeccably! Everything from the salad to the potatoes to the Seabass was delightful. Special shoutout to the dangerously delicious cobbler; a must no matter how full you are. Been here 4 times already! We love the Caesar salad, NY steak and potatoes and we usually get the crudo. Last time we got the rib eye, not worth it. Wine pour is very low. Service, 1st time was amazing, we had the best waitress. After that, servers were not as good as our first girl. Sadly they're not consistent with service. Last time, my husband ordered wine, and others brought food out and then finally the waiter came and noticed the wine was not there yet. Then he brought the bottle and poured soo low. You'd think he should pour a little extra or maybe the right amount after waiting 30 minutes for a glass of wine. So I think we will take a break from this place. I've been three times now, hoping to have the experience of the 5 star reviewers. I love a good origin story and comeback, but unfortunately Betsy has fallen flat for me and for those I've dined with. Salad (any of them): Please, please consider doing a half portion, even proportionally priced. The salads are not appropriate for parties of 2, which is the majority of the covers in an evening. These salads easily feed 6, and you can't take them home (soggy) so it just feels incredibly wasteful. If there were huge tables in the space, maybe I could understand the portion size but it's really wild how large they are- and at about $25, it's an easy skip in the order. Cohesiveness of dishes: Each component of the mushroom dish is tasty but it doesn't come together. Carrots were pretty meh- not enough seasoning? Proteins are Betsy's strong suit for sure- I've enjoyed the steak and pork chop. Wine: I get it, but maybe consider having some by-the-glass specials? Paying over $20 for someone pouring from a bottle is just rough when you typically have a couple glasses with dinner. I just found out about this great small restaurant in Altadena and had to go and enjoy a meal like the people described I got there and service is great since you walking in that door they received you with a smile and take you to your table, the ambience it's very chill simple but with a ton of details that make you get in to a great vibe, candles, gas lamps and the wood fire in the kitchen just great. The food was incredible amazing I had to order a little bit of everything, I can't complain much, but the Caesar salad wasn't my favorite, I have to try a every Caesar if it's one in the menu, this is just me, you try it and maybe you like it l, the balance of the flavors wasn't there because of the predominant bitterness of the radicchio and the super strong flavor of the anchovy crumb, but the rest of the food just amazing, and definitely going back to finish the whole menu. read more

Upon stepping into the world that is Betsy, one is met with caramel tones and a lovely open fun energy. Flames in the center of the space are well tamed by the cuisine artists who are working to make this food truly beautiful for us who are present. The menu is a perfect amount of items and the design of the menu is smart as it's just one long list blending from the top of the meal all the way thru the entrees into the desert options. Everything pairs well with everything and that's very smart. We shared and were inspired to share the Goat cheese plate / the tomatoes and fresh burrata. They both feature perfectly paired bread which is tinged with slight blackened around the edges and this connects these dishes in a beautiful and new way. The cauliflower is not only amazing but it's also a 'sprouting' variation which with just the right amount of sea salt, it makes one savory each bite. The Gnocchi is one of a kind and dressed with lemon pepper and butter and when enjoying it one can tell this is different and almost how one would curated sea scallops while also simultaneously being a smart and savory foreshadowing of desert. For dessert order both the Cheesecake which is dense in size but complex to taste. Pair this with their 'Cobbler' which unlike the pie style one is used to, this cobbler moment is absolutely a surprise as it's absolutely cornbread in nature and most memorable. We arrived around 5:10 PM, seated earlier than our reservation. The ambiance was so nice and waitress and owner were excellent. Tyler, the owner, noticed our steak had come out not to standard so he had a new steak made for us without our prompting. The Tomahawk steak itself had a perfect crust and was cooked medium rare with just the right amount of fat on the steak. It came with chimichurri sauce and a steak sauce. Chimichurri was delightful. The steak was adequate to feed two people who love eating. The beef tallow potatoes were good but I could have done without them and been happy! So great to see a packed restaurant in Altadena just blocks away from the devastation of the fire. Betsy is a beautifully decorated little spot with outdoor tables and indoor seating and a cozy nook in the back surrounded by bottles of wine. A word to the wise, do not sit at the bar across from the open wood burning kitchen. It's horribly uncomfortable, and your face will get as pink as the pork chops. I ordered the Hamachi Crudo to start. It was good, but nothing special. Then I had the pork chops with greens and squash. The char on the vegetables was amazing !!!The flavor of the sauce they spoon on the pork chops was delicious but at one end of the dish, there was a big glob of brown mustard which I could have done without. Also, the pork chops could've been trimmed a little better. I was continuously cutting off big chunks of fat. That being said it was perfectly cooked and very delicious. For dessert, we ordered the cobbler which was soooooo sweet it was an appetizing. It came with whipped cream, which was covered in salt. Why????? because I sat at the bar, I got to see all of the dishes being taken to the tables. Everything looks amazing. I think it's best to start by being super appreciative and thankful that Betsy is even in Altadena. I've lived here for almost 35 years and have been longing for a restaurant that we could walk to so that we didn't have to drive or take an Uber to old town to have a nice meal. We had a fantastic dinner at Betsy...a place that we were able to walk to, which is mind blowing...you know what I mean if you live up here...Altadena is historically arestaurant desert..but that is slowly changing! We showed up at 5:30, it was still sunny on the street, we thought we were going to eat inside, but it was a little bit too loud for me, I am 60, my hearing is awful, blame it on the Ramones, also The Ramones!...so I don't do well in restaurants that are loud...I can't hear a thing. We met Tyler the owner during our meal and he explained to me that he needs to keep the music a little bit loud because he has hood fans that are trying to suck all of the wood smoke from the grill out of the restaurant, which I totally get, and I am very thankful that there are plenty of tables on the sidewalk, that we were able to sit at. It's a bit disorienting that it's right down the street from my former favorite hardware store, Altadena hardware and, across the street from the liquor store where I always bought my lottery tickets. It feels like we are dining in a bit of a dystopian wasteland with fellow survivors. All that aside, we're literally sitting on a sidewalk in Altadena, having a very fine meal, which blows my mind., We started with a fantastic Barolo. We also ordered the tomato and burrata dish, which was excellent, they use a white balsamic plus plenty of salt and pepper and it is excellent, then we had the steak with hotel butter as well as the pork dish and they were both fantastic. All in all, this is absolutely going to be one of our must go to restaurants at least once a month or more because everything about it is great, the vibe is fantastic, the music inside, wow it is too loud for me, it's probably fine for most people, and it is excellent, the wine list is fantastic , the people that work there are fantastic, obviously, Tyler is fantastic and we again are just so appreciative of somebody who is willing to invest in our community, the restaurant was absolutely slammed from 530 until we left at about 730, which is fantastic, I am so happy that this place exists. SUCH a great addition to the area! My husband and I had dinner here last night and we were pleasantly surprised. Making reservations online was easy. They have outdoor, indoor and bar seating. We sat at the bar and loved seeing all the plates come together. We ordered the daily crudo, ceviche, tomatoes and burrata, local fish, wagyu, and broccoli. For dessert we had the cheesecake and took an order of BETSY'S COBBLER to go. Omg the cobbler was fantastic! So warm and comforting. I find the menu limited and not compelling.,Having visited the Loire Valley, I was excited by the description of the cheese plate, the cheese being in the Loire Valley style. It was fine. We loved our recent visit to Betsy! As soon as I heard about this restaurant I knew I had to check it out and support it in Altadena. We made our reservation and didn't wait too long before getting seated in the new cozy dining room with the warm glow of the kitchen wrapping around you. Amazing service, each dish came out promptly one dish after the other. We first ordered the Burrata that came with flavorful tomatoes and a piece of bread. I enjoyed and savored every last bite! For the main I had the gilled halibut that was cooked to perfection. I would definitely order it again and highly recommend! We also ordered the snow peas which was a delightful addition that was recommended by our waitress. It was bright vibrant and had some unexpected spice to it. Lastly, we ended the meal with their Basque inspired cheesecake that topped off the meal and was delicious. I reallllly wanted to like this spot. I live close by and like to support the local community especially those affected by the fire and would have loved to make this a spot to take friends/fam visiting from out of town. The space is beautifully designed, very modern and cozy. Between two people we spent about $200+ on 2 appetizers, 2 mains, 1 dessert, and 2 glasses of wine. I can't even say I remember any of it but what I do remember is how insanely salty a lot of it was. Chill on the salt, y'all. Our dishes were okay, but nothing special to us, you could make this at home. Our server was nice enough, but once we paid it was like we were invisible after. She had asked if I wanted a receipt and I said "yes". Waited for 10-15minutes for this receipt but gave up. I regret the tip I gave, especially after that meal. Earlier I asked how much a basic graphic shirt they were selling was because it was cute. It was $60. Lol. Okay. Aligns with how much they charge for food that's mid. First, it has been a year since the fires, Betsy was out of business for eight months, but there was no infrastucture to support businesses. I am so glad Betsy is now back in business at its home in Altadena, with the beautiful view of Catalina Island and the Los Angeles lights. Now to the food, which is amazingly prepared all in a wood hearth or on a wood-fired BBQ with blazing fire just feet away from patrons. We chose the New York Steak and Salmon as our main course. To ask for ketchup or tartar sauce respectively would not improve upon perfection. How the chef and pitmasters know how long to sear the meat to a perfect medium rare or the perfect salmon with a moist texture and no smell of fish anywhere. Our seats were bartables and stools right in front of all the action, but there was no smoke to smell or heat to feel amazingly, just oneamazing show or lesson on flame cooking protein. Even the breads are baked in a hearth, similar to making pizza, but more savory. This restaurant is one of a kind and recommended from one LA Chef being interviewed on television. One of the finest restaurants in LA. We chatted with the owner/chef who's a nice guy who helps bring out food. Very busy and crowded. We were in the front corner table by the window and that was too crowded but they were able to re-seat us to a roomier table. Seats at the counter look great, overlooking the open wood burning stove. A great anchor for the Altadena fire recovery. Expensive, yes, but worth it. Loved the different veggies, the salad and the steak. The wine selection is also very good and reasonable by the glass as my wife doesn't drink. And if you're lucky, you might see Mandy Moore. Can't wait to go back. Hard to get a reservation but just keep at it and put in a request for notification from Resy and you'll be able to get a table eventually. read more

A beacon of hope sitting smack in the middle of the devastation that Altadena suffered a year ago today. A lone building stands among the remains of its neighboring buildings and yet as soon as you step inside, you feel the warmth, the passion, sacrifice and spirit of perseverance. Big feelings for a small restaurant with a small but quintessential menu with delicious food prepared to perfection. The staff is helpful and kind, offering service with a smile while the beads of sweat from the warmth radiating off the wood-fire that's on display for all to see. Also a sign of the pace and intensity they all work with. We enjoyed a nice wine with an impeccably curated meal. Steak cooked to perfection, with a subtle yet noteworthy taste of the smokiness from the fire; perhaps a prodding irony of what surrounds Betsy. Truly a special place. All of the details are done right, from the cozy lighting to the wine selection to the unique roaring fire that makes the place glow. Perfect for a date night. Sam our server was attentive and fun to talk with, everyone on the staff makes you feel welcome and at ease. Everything is cooked right there on the open fire and the char on the cabbage and flavor was just perfect. We also loved the Waygu, fried potatoes, mixed salad and rolls. OMG !!! Go !!! I needed to use my Amex resy credit so I searched for a restaurant near work . What luck to find Betsy . The food was impeccable and I'll return asap to eat my way through the menu . The staff feels like you live in their neighborhood . The locals are filling it and it's filled with laughter , oohs and aahs as the food rolls out . The food that is all cooked over open fire directly or cast iron . Even the cobbler and cheesecake . Support Altadena . We came to Betsy for my husband's birthday and had mixed feelings. I had emailed about a month before about dietary restrictions and the email response was so warm and welcoming that I had really high expectations for the service of the restaurant. Unfortunately, the service we received was really bad. Maybe it was an off night, but the staff were not attentive at all and not kind. We were pretty neglected from our waitress, which was especially disappointing when we were celebrating. The restaurant is also so incredibly loud. Seeing the food cooked over the open fire is a cool concept, but my husband and I could barely carry a conversation because of the noise levels. We were also sat at a high top and the chairs were very awkward and uncomfortable. We both had the striped bass and shared the cabbage and tallow potatoes. The charred cabbage was quite delicious and the standout of the meal. The other dishes were not memorable for us and the level of salt on the potatoes and bass made the dishes borderline inedible. I'm born and raised in Dena and wanted to adore this place because I do think what Betsy is doing for our community is great, but there were some huge misses when we were there. I would give them another chance to see if the service has improved and order some different items to see if it's any better, but I would not rush back after our experience! read more
