The crudo was way too sour and the dish tasted like somebody just cut a few pieces of raw hamachi and soaked it in very acidic citrus and served it. Everything else was great. Late review- Visited Betsy for dinner back in September 2025, for my 5 year anniversary. Restaurant had been open for a week when we went and overall we had a great experience. It was nice to see that the restaurant was able to come back strong after the horrendous Altadena fires. We wanted to dine at Betsy as a way to give back to our community, family and friends. The food was delicious, the chef was very friendly and talked us through our meal and the service was spot on. We sat at the chef's counter and it was nice to see all the chefs in action. The limited counter seating (I think just two seats?) is directly in front of the wood burning stove, so it is nice and toasty (which i personally love as i don't like being cold when I eat). I know this restaurant will shine (as it has been based on the foodie blogs) and will be a staple restaurant in the SGV for years to come. I've been three times now, hoping to have the experience of the 5 star reviewers. I love a good origin story and comeback, but unfortunately Betsy has fallen flat for me and for those I've dined with. Salad (any of them): Please, please consider doing a half portion, even proportionally priced. The salads are not appropriate for parties of 2, which is the majority of the covers in an evening. These salads easily feed 6, and you can't take them home (soggy) so it just feels incredibly wasteful. If there were huge tables in the space, maybe I could understand the portion size but it's really wild how large they are- and at about $25, it's an easy skip in the order. Cohesiveness of dishes: Each component of the mushroom dish is tasty but it doesn't come together. Carrots were pretty meh- not enough seasoning? Proteins are Betsy's strong suit for sure- I've enjoyed the steak and pork chop. Wine: I get it, but maybe consider having some by-the-glass specials? Paying over $20 for someone pouring from a bottle is just rough when you typically have a couple glasses with dinner. Such a gem in Altadena. We made resys for 7pm, were seated right away. It's a small restaurant with a focused menu -- everything is cooked on their wood fire grill. Nine months after my first and last visit to Bernee, I had another delightful evening at 875 E. Mariposa St. in the newly re-opened restaurant, which was rebranded Betsy post-Eaton Fire. It's easy to see why Betsy has since been named one of America's top new restaurants. Owner, Tyler Wells knows good food and community. The restaurant is beautifully designed and the wood fire hearth creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Note that if you're seated directly in front of the live-fire, it will get hot, so dress accordingly. The food at Betsy is exquisite. To start we ordered the Best of Season Tomatoes. The tomatoes were in fact, simply the best-- sweet, juicy, and the flavors were only amplified by the West Virginia salt, creamy burrata, and delicious cast iron focaccia. We then had a wedge salad with more amazing tomatoes, a wonderful blue cheese dressing, and freshly cracked black pepper that lingered on our tongues. I then had the Wanderer New York Strip steak with the hotel butter. It was perfectly cooked, tender, and the finishing salt was spectacular. My partner had the ricotta gnocchi with lemon, black pepper, and nice heap of Parmesan. The pillowy gnocchi had a delicate flavor, which was a nice contrast to the other dishes (though I'm personally partial to the steak and bolder flavors). By the time we got to the snap peas, with an almond crunch and St. Germain, we were already pretty full. The bright, citrus flavors were a delightful punch to our palates though we took most of the peas home. We had to save room for dessert! We went with the wood oven cheesecake, which was smooth and creamy with the most subtle hint of smokiness from the wood oven. Delicious! All in all, this was an incredible meal. The staff at Betsy couldn't have been kinder or more accommodating for our walk-in with 2 adults and 1 kid, but the food was hit and miss for us. We ordered the Dinner Rolls, the Daily Crudo, the Caesar, the Wanderer New York Strip, and the Carrots. The crudo (halibut that night) and the carrots were our favorites, both seasoned well and served hot, while the rolls were bland, the endives in the Caesar tipped the salad into especially bitter territory, and the steak arrived closer to lukewarm than sizzling. Curious to see how the menu evolves, but for now it felt more promising than polished and we left feeling like there are still some kinks to work out in the kitchen. Very disappointing customer service-- here's my story: I requested a reservation via email and they responded with some time options. I chose a time and planned my date night accordingly. I made the trip out there with my date, only to find that the restaurant was shuttered. There was a sign on the door stating that they shuttered due to a mechanical problem or something. But they didn't even have the courtesy of letting me know via email or phone that they had closed, so I made the trip in vain. A few days later I emailed them on the same email thread, letting them know about what happened and my natural disappointment. And guess what happened? No response. I really shouldn't be surprised. It seems consistent with their lack of accountability and empathy for customer experience. It's kinda gross. read more

So great to see a packed restaurant in Altadena just blocks away from the devastation of the fire. Betsy is a beautifully decorated little spot with outdoor tables and indoor seating and a cozy nook in the back surrounded by bottles of wine. A word to the wise, do not sit at the bar across from the open wood burning kitchen. It's horribly uncomfortable, and your face will get as pink as the pork chops. I ordered the Hamachi Crudo to start. It was good, but nothing special. Then I had the pork chops with greens and squash. The char on the vegetables was amazing !!!The flavor of the sauce they spoon on the pork chops was delicious but at one end of the dish, there was a big glob of brown mustard which I could have done without. Also, the pork chops could've been trimmed a little better. I was continuously cutting off big chunks of fat. That being said it was perfectly cooked and very delicious. For dessert, we ordered the cobbler which was soooooo sweet it was an appetizing. It came with whipped cream, which was covered in salt. Everything we had at Betsy was ~fire~. The live fire warmed the entire restaurant, is a clear focal vibe, and made amazingly delicious, perfectly charred food. We pretty much went with all the items our server recommended as a first time guest and everything was spot on. I just found out about this great small restaurant in Altadena and had to go and enjoy a meal like the people described I got there and service is great since you walking in that door they received you with a smile and take you to your table, the ambience it's very chill simple but with a ton of details that make you get in to a great vibe, candles, gas lamps and the wood fire in the kitchen just great. I live close by and like to support the local community especially those affected by the fire and would have loved to make this a spot to take friends/fam visiting from out of town. The space is beautifully designed, very modern and cozy. Between two people we spent about $200+ on 2 appetizers, 2 mains, 1 dessert, and 2 glasses of wine. I can't even say I remember any of it but what I do remember is how insanely salty a lot of it was. Chill on the salt, y'all. Our dishes were okay, but nothing special to us, you could make this at home. Our server was nice enough, but once we paid it was like we were invisible after. She had asked if I wanted a receipt and I said "yes". Waited for 10-15minutes for this receipt but gave up. I regret the tip I gave, especially after that meal. Upon stepping into the world that is Betsy, one is met with caramel tones and a lovely open fun energy. Flames in the center of the space are well tamed by the cuisine artists who are working to make this food truly beautiful for us who are present. The menu is a perfect amount of items and the design of the menu is smart as it's just one long list blending from the top of the meal all the way thru the entrees into the desert options. Everything pairs well with everything and that's very smart. We shared and were inspired to share the Goat cheese plate / the tomatoes and fresh burrata. They both feature perfectly paired bread which is tinged with slight blackened around the edges and this connects these dishes in a beautiful and new way. The cauliflower is not only amazing but it's also a 'sprouting' variation which with just the right amount of sea salt, it makes one savory each bite. The Gnocchi is one of a kind and dressed with lemon pepper and butter and when enjoying it one can tell this is different and almost how one would curated sea scallops while also simultaneously being a smart and savory foreshadowing of desert. For dessert order both the Cheesecake which is dense in size but complex to taste. Pair this with their 'Cobbler' which unlike the pie style one is used to, this cobbler moment is absolutely a surprise as it's absolutely cornbread in nature and most memorable. SUCH a great addition to the area! My husband and I had dinner here last night and we were pleasantly surprised. Making reservations online was easy. They have outdoor, indoor and bar seating. I think it's best to start by being super appreciative and thankful that Betsy is even in Altadena. I've lived here for almost 35 years and have been longing for a restaurant that we could walk to so that we didn't have to drive or take an Uber to old town to have a nice meal. We had a fantastic dinner at Betsy...a place that we were able to walk to, which is mind blowing...you know what I mean if you live up here...Altadena is historically arestaurant desert..but that is slowly changing! We showed up at 5:30, it was still sunny on the street, we thought we were going to eat inside, but it was a little bit too loud for me, I am 60, my hearing is awful, blame it on the Ramones, also The Ramones!...so I don't do well in restaurants that are loud...I can't hear a thing. We met Tyler the owner during our meal and he explained to me that he needs to keep the music a little bit loud because he has hood fans that are trying to suck all of the wood smoke from the grill out of the restaurant, which I totally get, and I am very thankful that there are plenty of tables on the sidewalk, that we were able to sit at. It's a bit disorienting that it's right down the street from my former favorite hardware store, Altadena hardware and, across the street from the liquor store where I always bought my lottery tickets. It feels like we are dining in a bit of a dystopian wasteland with fellow survivors. All that aside, we're literally sitting on a sidewalk in Altadena, having a very fine meal, which blows my mind., We started with a fantastic Barolo. We also ordered the tomato and burrata dish, which was excellent, they use a white balsamic plus plenty of salt and pepper and it is excellent, then we had the steak with hotel butter as well as the pork dish and they were both fantastic. All in all, this is absolutely going to be one of our must go to restaurants at least once a month or more because everything about it is great, the vibe is fantastic, the music inside, wow it is too loud for me, it's probably fine for most people, and it is excellent, the wine list is fantastic , the people that work there are fantastic, obviously, Tyler is fantastic and we again are just so appreciative of somebody who is willing to invest in our community, the restaurant was absolutely slammed from 530 until we left at about 730, which is fantastic, I am so happy that this place exists. We have been coming here since September when we moved back into Altadena. At the start, it was just great to have a place to go for a great meal in town - but with a friendly and kind waitstaff who listened to locals tell their stories and who seemed to understand what we went through. Over time, our Betsy experience has transitioned from being just "that place up the hill" to really loving the food as much as the location and the people. First, the food. The steak is always delicious and cooked wonderfully. As some have noted, there is a salty flavor to it - beautiful salt scattered over the plate and meat - along with the wonderful butter. It has been the foundation of almost every meal we've had at Betsy. The pasta is fun with large groups or as a change from the steak. We love experimenting with the rotating vegetables (try the current melon and cucumber salad!) and cannot go without trying the cheese they are liking. Second, the wine. Always delicious and they will pour tastes if you're having trouble making up your mind. Maybe pricier than their wine bar next door, but listen to your wait staff explain the wine and the region. More often than not we'll get a second glass. Third, the people. Tyler is fantastic and always fun to talk with when he's in for the evening - but balancing the wine bar and private events in the back that isn't all the time any more. Still, he created the place and recruited the people and - each with their own personality - they're all like him in the way they treat you well. Chef and his kitchen staff do great work with the food and deliver it well. The wait staff is all friendly and enjoys the food and wine and wants you to have a good time. Are there things that can bug? Sure. Sometimes things take longer than you think they ought to. Once we had a waiter who wasn't really on the ball. I like but don't absolutely die for the desserts (the wine bar desserts and pastries though...). So it's not like everything is perfect all the time. But we've tried everything on the menu - even the thing on the bottom of the menu - and I can say we love coming back again and again. Will we "drop in" at the wine bar instead? Sure. But when we can plan a dinner early enough to get a reservation, we'll absolutely venture in and sit and enjoy ourselves. So this review is based not on one night but on 9 months of getting to know the restaurant and the people, enjoying the seasonal changes to the menu, and working with the reservation system and the changes over time (loudness of the music, AC levels to balance the open flame, etc). We made our reservation and didn't wait too long before getting seated in the new cozy dining room with the warm glow of the kitchen wrapping around you. Amazing service, each dish came out promptly one dish after the other. We first ordered the Burrata that came with flavorful tomatoes and a piece of bread. I enjoyed and savored every last bite! For the main I had the gilled halibut that was cooked to perfection. I would definitely order it again and highly recommend! We also ordered the snow peas which was a delightful addition that was recommended by our waitress. It was bright vibrant and had some unexpected spice to it. We were in the front corner table by the window and that was too crowded but they were able to re-seat us to a roomier table. Seats at the counter look great, overlooking the open wood burning stove. A great anchor for the Altadena fire recovery. Expensive, yes, but worth it. Loved the different veggies, the salad and the steak. The wine selection is also very good and reasonable by the glass as my wife doesn't drink. And if you're lucky, you might see Mandy Moore. Can't wait to go back. The ambiance was incredible (maybe a little tight for the tall people in our group) but warm, wood tones, low lights, laughter and chatter in the air made for a perfect Friday night. While I know their wine list is superb, we brought own so I can't comment on that. THE FOOD: We ended up sharing lots of plates for the four of us. We did dinner rolls (why is bread so good?!), Caesar salad (so fresh, covered in parm cheese), two Wandering Steaks (that were cooked to perfection!), a striped bass (very yummy!), potatoes (maybe too long on the fire) and the grilled cabbage that was surprisingly tasty. First, it has been a year since the fires, Betsy was out of business for eight months, but there was no infrastucture to support businesses. I am so glad Betsy is now back in business at its home in Altadena, with the beautiful view of Catalina Island and the Los Angeles lights. Now to the food, which is amazingly prepared all in a wood hearth or on a wood-fired BBQ with blazing fire just feet away from patrons. We chose the New York Steak and Salmon as our main course. To ask for ketchup or tartar sauce respectively would not improve upon perfection. How the chef and pitmasters know how long to sear the meat to a perfect medium rare or the perfect salmon with a moist texture and no smell of fish anywhere. Our seats were bartables and stools right in front of all the action, but there was no smoke to smell or heat to feel amazingly, just oneamazing show or lesson on flame cooking protein. Even the breads are baked in a hearth, similar to making pizza, but more savory. This restaurant is one of a kind and recommended from one LA Chef being interviewed on television. It was a good Caesar salad that is being served at all the "places" it seems lately, but it was very strong Citrus dressing, but it needs to be, imo, strong to overcome the bitterness of the leaves. So I found it tasty, but it was just too much and I don't like taking home salads. King Salmon - the fish was well cooked and seasoned well. The white bean veg mixture cooked on the side was "meh." I liked the beans, but the sauce or the greens used was a bit bitter and slightly off putting. My wife finished it and liked it enough. NY Strip steak with "hotel butter" - I know, why did I order such a basic item. I wanted something "safe" to eat? Practically every item on the menu had a citrus flavor or vinaigrette in it. It was a fine steak. I would have been crushed if they couldn't cook a steak, but it was just a nice piece of beef cooked well. Wood Oven Cabbage w/ aged balsamic - This was my favorite thing or 2nd :) It was exactly what I was expecting and delivered. It was a balsamic drizzle and was on the sweeter side, so not acidic like everything else. Weiser Carrots with miso vinegar, citrus, jalapeno - I like carrots, I was hoping to like these as well. It was practically inedible. I would have said something at the time, but we liked our server and she recommended them lol Finding out the "citrus" was quartered pieces of kumquat was a surprise. It don't know if it was the miso vinegar or the kumquats just having a bitter flavor when cooked, but I couldn't eat one. I didn't want to continue to chew the carrot so I could swallow. I tried 3 times just to see if it would ever change... Betsy's Cobbler - We were told it wasn't a traditional cobbler, ok. It was raspberries and blackberries wrapped in a "cake" with a whipped cream. I leaned on my wife to finish it. She was ok with it. It wasn't anything special to her though. For me, I know for sure I wouldn't be able to eat it without the whipped cream because I thought it was too dry for a "cobbler" or is it because this dessert was "cobbled" together? Then the flavor just wasn't there for me. In my opinion, I feel like I got "Social Media Conned." I believed the "hype machine." I wanted to be able to add this to my list but unfortunately, it's on the wrong list for a return. read more

A beacon of hope sitting smack in the middle of the devastation that Altadena suffered a year ago today. A lone building stands among the remains of its neighboring buildings and yet as soon as you step inside, you feel the warmth, the passion, sacrifice and spirit of perseverance. Big feelings for a small restaurant with a small but quintessential menu with delicious food prepared to perfection. The staff is helpful and kind, offering service with a smile while the beads of sweat from the warmth radiating off the wood-fire that's on display for all to see. Also a sign of the pace and intensity they all work with. We enjoyed a nice wine with an impeccably curated meal. Steak cooked to perfection, with a subtle yet noteworthy taste of the smokiness from the fire; perhaps a prodding irony of what surrounds Betsy. We came to Betsy for my husband's birthday and had mixed feelings. I had emailed about a month before about dietary restrictions and the email response was so warm and welcoming that I had really high expectations for the service of the restaurant. Unfortunately, the service we received was really bad. Maybe it was an off night, but the staff were not attentive at all and not kind. We were pretty neglected from our waitress, which was especially disappointing when we were celebrating. The restaurant is also so incredibly loud. Seeing the food cooked over the open fire is a cool concept, but my husband and I could barely carry a conversation because of the noise levels. We were also sat at a high top and the chairs were very awkward and uncomfortable. We both had the striped bass and shared the cabbage and tallow potatoes. The charred cabbage was quite delicious and the standout of the meal. The other dishes were not memorable for us and the level of salt on the potatoes and bass made the dishes borderline inedible. I'm born and raised in Dena and wanted to adore this place because I do think what Betsy is doing for our community is great, but there were some huge misses when we were there. I would give them another chance to see if the service has improved and order some different items to see if it's any better, but I would not rush back after our experience! read more

Super friendly servers, love the open concept. It was a lovely vibe! It did take way longer than expected to get the apps and then understandably the tomahawk. I asked for medium plus it came out great, and also ordered the basque cheesecake. I didn't like the lack of street parking. I read another review saying parking was good but it took awhile to find a spot and it wasn't even that busy. read more

This is our second time here at Betsy. We always get the bar seats. We love seeing the kitchen magic. The team work so well together. The fire pit can get hot for some but we didn't mind it. We enjoyed watching the staff cook and put our food together. We tried almost the whole menu but will definitely be back to try the others. The pork, charred cabbage and cobbler are a must and bot because the others weren't good. Those are our favorites by far. Not only the food was delicious, the staff were amazing. We were greeted at the entrance and seated right away. The waitress and waiters were attentive but not overwhelming. Just the right amount. It's an A+ restaurant from top to bottom. Let's start with vibes -- laidback, cool, mix of hip local retirees, parents on kidless date nights, and hipster eastsiders. Service is friendly and familiar; not overly stuffy and not overly up in your business but prompt and helpful. Food is excellent; we had the steak (perfectly cooked, delicious, loved the butter) the cauliflower (some real spice to it, in a good way), the cabbage (love a fire charred cabbage), and the hamachi (it's super simple but I thought delicious and clearly very fresh). The desserts were also great--cheesecake was excellent as was the cobbler; if I had to get just one, I'm going cobbler. We will be back! Awesome spot. read more

Betsy was recently named as one of Los Angeles Magazine's 10 best new restaurants and I definitely agree! I was lucky to snag a reservation at 8pm on a Wednesday night about 2-weeks out as reservations have been hard to get because of this new distinction. My friend and I had a really lovely dinner at Betsy - the service was truly spectacular from start to finish, with just one small hiccup toward the end. We ordered the berry cobbler for dessert and ended up waiting close to 30 minutes...we thought it might've been forgotten. When our server finally brought it out, she immediately acknowledged the delay and comped it without us having to say a word, which I really appreciated. Now rewind to the earlier courses...food-wise, everything was excellent. I ordered the pork chop with winter vegetables and it may honestly be the best pork chop I've ever had - it was perfectly cooked and incredibly flavorful especially with the charcoal grill flavor. My friend got the gnocchi, which was also delicious. We split the dinner rolls - they were a little burnt on top, but I just smothered it with the herb butter that was provided. One of my favorite parts of the evening was where we were seated...we had a great view of the open-fire grill and could watch the cooking happen, which added to the experience. I also really loved supporting a local Altadena business, especially after seeing so many nearby empty lots still impacted by last year's fires. It made the meal feel even more meaningful. I really wish Betsy well and hope that it continues to be a long standing gathering place to revitalize the Altadena community. read more
