When the store was downtown Portland, I got a great exam by the eye expert and they had the most fantastic and varied eye glass frames. I got about six different kinds and have worn them the past eight years. I never saw such a variety of glass frames and the owner who stocked the store has the most wonderful taste. I am waiting for them to come back to downtown, since their new place was difficult to get to via the bus which I use. read more

I do NOT recommend this place at all. Avoid this place, I would not use this business any more. If you mention about your prescription after eye exam you will be kicked out. They said they will only accept the customer who do *total service* there. I was the customer from last year. I chose this place because it's in my neighborhood. Recently I try to make a reservation for my eye exam and update my glasses. I just asked if I could get a prescription after the eye exam. The lady said they only take *loyal customer*??? I said I'm going to get one glasses there but for another one I may need to go more affordable option, that's why I'm asking the prescription. She said we don't take the customer like me and just hang up. haha why? What a shame that this kind of business is around us. I'm the middle of reporting to VSP network. Extremely poor service on multiple occasions for me and my wife. Orders taking two months when promised in two weeks, lost orders, poor quality lenses that had to be remade completely. Never call you to let you know order was ready for pick up. Just the latest disappointment: they took an order from my wife to replace lenses on her glasses. They said it was free under warranty and should be ready in two weeks. Two month later I call them to find out what's going on, they said: lenses were just delivered today, come pick them up (they always say "just delivered today" when they forget to call you). My wife came in only to find out that the lenses were not there, the order was never placed, it is not free under warranty, and costs $400 and "would you like to order them?"... This is my optician of choice. I've been to their downtown location many times and now since I moved to Hillsboro, this location is closer to home. Everyone at the store is warm and patient. I have been getting my glasses from Cornel eycare for over 5 years. The last pairs i bought actually lasted that long. The frames kept thier shape, appearance and are so strong that i will use them in my next pair. Frankly I am afraid any other frames might bend. And with today's high tech else's and coatings the position that the lens is sitting on your face is more important them the perscription. Strong frames that keep their shape and fit your face are essential. All the frames he carries in his office are substantial. The coatings did not start to scratch until the 3rd year and were not so bad as I needed to get replacements until 5 years passed.. Dr. Lawson is really "As god as it gets" when it comes to Eyecare. He interviews you about your life style and does one of the most thourough exams I have experienced. I have an eye problem and i have experienced a lot of them! He marries your exam results with your life style and works to recommend the best product to insure the quality of your lifestyle is maximized. I come from the extreme other side of town and really hate the traffic and unknown drive times but seeing he and his technitions is worth it. I did try to go to another "High end" shop and was sooo disappointed in the results that I gave them back their glasses and perscription and went back to Chad. I mean would you keep a pair of glasses that bent in the first 2 weeks and that you could not read the computer screen with? I will not be disappointed again. Chad also operates Golden Optical in Downtown Portland. Both shops are nice. Cornell is lots bigger and has more selection of frames but if getting to Cornel is an issue then consider Golden as they work as a team to meet your needs. I have been an infrequent patient here for the last 5 years, and I'm disappointed I have to be writing this review after my eye appointment. However, I woke up this morning feeling like I needed to share my experience. The good: Everyone is super friendly (including Dr. Lawson), and the office is clean, well situated and has a nice selection of eyewear. Room for improvement: I think one of the employees was just learning, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. However, after selecting a pair of glasses, they initially told me I was going to have to pay over $100 more than what was actually due. The price wasn't adding up to me, so I asked for them to go over it multiple times - finally another employee came in and, at first tried to defend the pricing, but realized they had double charged for something. Just a warning to double-check and ask questions - always good for any consumer. The bad: My only reason for making the appointment (which I stated when making the appt. and on intake forms) was to update my glasses prescription. Before my eye exam, I was ushered into an exam room by the front desk attendant. Without explanation, she asked me to sit down to take a picture of my retina, along with several other tests (eye pressure, visual field test etc.). I stopped and asked 'is this really necessary?' and she said 'yes' (again, no explanation). I came to realize later that this was an Optomap retinal exam, which is not needed for someone my age (30) with no history of retinal issues/complaints or new/current complaints, & lacking any family history of retinal disease. This testing is clearly not indicated based on widely accepted practice guidelines (read #2 specifically) http://www.choosingwisely.org/doctor-patient-lists/american-academy-of-ophthalmology/ - I was alerted to this by my physician husband. The insurance did not cover this, which makes sense, as it is not clinically indicated. Furthermore, Dr. Lawson does a basic retinal exam in the examination itself - it seems to me that, if he saw something of concern there, then that would be the time to talk with me about further testing. I was charged $29 for this unneeded test, however, (and more importantly) it left me with a feeling of distrust for this office and Dr. Lawson. I understand that they are running a business here, but there are ethical ways to do so, and this is not one of them. I hope they will amend this practice for future unsuspecting patients who are coming to them with trust, and for help. read more

The doctor is great. Almost a month later, and I still don't have glasses, but I DO have a hand full of different excuses/stories as to why the glasses aren't here. It seems to change depending on who I talk to. My glasses have been paid in full for almost four weeks, and I'm still only getting a run around. Excuse #1. There was a snowstorm on the East coast, so shipments are delayed. However, they wanted me to have glasses right away so would order the lenses and let me use the showroom frames in the meantime. They didn't want me to wait so long for glasses. GREAT! Never got those, and every order that I placed from the East coast with other companies are arriving. Excuse #2. I ordered a really popular frame, and there's a snowstorm on the East coast. Perfect. It is still snowing on the East coast, but I'm still getting other things I'm ordering just fine. I called to cancel my order, and they said my frames had suddenly, miraculously arrived. BUT... they were still waiting for my lenses. What? They didn't arrive WEEKS ago like they were going to do? OK, wait another day for my lenses. I've made it this far. Excuse #3. My lenses still aren't here, but UPS *might* make another delivery today. I know how UPS works. I have worked for large companies that ship stuff everyday. BOTTOM LINE: Enjoy the exam. Don't bother with the poorly managed optical shop if you want your glasses anytime soon. read more

Caryn at Bethany Optical is the best! I wear two different contact prescription in each eye and while packing for a trip to Hawaii I mistakenly only packed my contacts for my left eye. I did not discover my mistake until the first morning of my trip. I do have glasses, but we have multiple snorkeling trips planned including one that day - the prescription masks the provide don't work for me because of my astigmatism. I was able to locate the contacts I needed at the Walmart, but they would not sell them to me without a prescription. Due to the time difference it was after hours on Friday. I left two voicemails and sent an email in an attempt to get my prescription emailed to me. I wasn't hopeful, and thought I would have to wait until Monday. Caryn to the rescue! She emailed me my prescription after hours on a Friday in time for me to get my contacts! So glad she did as we did a night snorkel with Manta Rays. Spectacular! I have been seeing Dr. Lawson for many years and have always been a loyal customer - even following them from their downtown location. They now have a customer for life! read more

I have been a customer for over several years. I recently purchased Maui Jim Prescription Sunglasses. The lenses have failed in the first four years. Completely separating internally. No one in the office wants to help. Dr. Lawson's staff has repeatedly told me that the lenses are only warranted for two years. These prescription sunglasses cost over $600 and all I get from them (Dr. Lawson's office and Maui Jim) is sorry. Your out. Nothing we can do. Thanks for playing. Can we sell you another failed product and take your money? Suffice it to say, I am warning everyone that this is not a place to do business if you want a doctor that will stand by what they sell you, and make it right for the client. Visited last year. Always reluctant to write a negative review, especially about a small family business, but my experience was not good and I cannot recommend this business. Although everyone is nice, there is too much upselling of glasses (I only wear contacts, so why the hard sales pitch? High profit margin, I assume.) The staff is not well educated on basic insurance plans (VSP) and how to coordinate benefits. This was extremely frustrating. Difficult to communicate with staff in terms of processing records as well. Can't really say much about the dr. Competent, yes, but not objective as far as his staff's shortcomings. . read more

The service is roughly comparable to other optical shops, and Dr. Lawson seems quite competent. However, you need to keep an eye out for surprise billing. In particular, be aware that the retinal imaging that they generally perform in place of pupil dilation (eye drops / slit lamp exam) is actually a service for which they charge extra. Your insurance (should you have it) may not cover it, and they don't mention at the time of the exam that the cost is not included in the basic eye exam quote that they give you up front. Also keep an eye on the cost of add-ons when getting your prescription filled. Ask for an itemized breakdown of the cost of various coatings, materials, and features prior to agreeing to pay for your new glasses. read more

Was pleasantly surprised that an eye exam could be enjoyable. Front staff was friendly, responsive and sincerely helpful. Dr. Lawson's approach was genuinely collaborative. Gave me just the right amount of information for me to understand each decision being made, and allowed for a true discussion of options and advice based on my needs and not just what the doctor's pushing today--how refreshing! Dr. Lawson and his staff are thorough and efficient. Dr. Lawson does not rush through his exams and listens. He clearly and sincerely wants his patients to have optimal eye health and vision. I noted that one reviewer felt that glasses were being "upsold," but I disagree. On my first visit last year, Dr. Lawson recommended that I keep my old glasses as they were satisfying my needs. He provided several free samples of contacts as I tried to switch to a multifocal type. When none of them worked, he recommended that I stay with my old contacts (of which I still had a good supply). This year, my prescription changed slightly and he recommended but did not push for new glasses. Once again, he provided free samples of multifocal contacts, including one new brand that has worked for me. Bottom line: Dr. Lawson provides information and advice, but his allows his patients to make their own decisions without pressure. As a retired physician I find his approach to be ideal and recommend him without reservation. read more

I have gone here and to the other location Dr. Lawson owns in downtown Portland-- Golden Optical. Both are superb. I suffered for years as a Kaiser optometry patient until my insurance changed and I could literally "see" the difference. Dr. Lawson took the time to understand my life and hence he helped me with my chronic neck pain! I needed a larger view of my computer screen so I wasn't ruining my posture with my bifocals trying to see the screen! What a relief. I have since gone with other minor issues like a corneal abrasion and he worked me into the schedule and fixed the problem. Competent, kind and very helpful. read more

I cannot speak for anyone else, but I see some very upset customers of this office and my experience with the staff in this Cornell Eye Care Group office is horrible. The staff there is not professional at all, and some of them just lie outright. If you want to know the detail, you can read on. I ordered a pair of glasses months ago, there have been a horribly long list of issues with this office: 1. They told me that they were going to order a new frame for my glasses instead of using the demo one in office. But when I see my glasses the demo frame was gone. They told me someone else may have used it. But you know what to believe here. 2. It came in very late. That was kind of ok since I have a backup pair even though they were not that great/ 3. What is worse is that the glasses are not done well at all. a) The distance between pupils they measured seem to be way off. They actually had 2 very different measurements for me. I asked them why and they just talked about something else. b) The edges of the glasses are not polished at all, they are not trimmed either like my other glasses do. (My frame is one of those airlock rimless ones) c) The legs cannot close at all when I'm not using it. 4. What is the worst is that the staff working with me is very rude and unprofessional: a) I asked them to redo it, they did do it once but the edges are still not polished and the distance between two lenses are still not right. Since then they repeatedly told me that it was I who wanted the edges to be dull instead of polished and refused to re make them. I just cannot believe what I heard from them in many conversations I had with them. b) At one point, they agreed to refund my glasses. But weeks later I did not get anything. Then I called the insurance office and my insurance called them. To my surprise, they told my insurance office that they will not refund my glasses. c) Every time I talked with them, the staff there just did not listen. She kept telling me her story and how I told her something I never said. And her attitude is very rude. When I asked them to talk to the doctor, they told me to leave. It's just unbelievable. Well, that's my experience. I hope no one else will have any experience like this. It's better just go to another optomistrist. read more
