Duck l'orange
Stephanie W.

I can't believe it has taken me this long to have dinner at Bertrand. My husband and I felt fortunate to get a reservation on a Friday. I highly recommend calling ahead, as this petite restaurant often books out during the weekend. My husband got the duck l'orange. The skin was crispy and the sauce sticky. I got the halibut with the tarragon sauce. The fish was perfectly cooked!!! The tarragon basil pesto sauce was light and the side of peppery arugula salad was a nice acidic complement to the meaty fish. It is clear the owner cares deeply about high quality ingredients, exceptionally cooked cuisine and pays very close attention to details. I'm looking forward to enjoying my next dinner on the patio. See you soon!

Bertrand's is reservation only and BYOB. This cozy little spot was beautifully decorated for the holidays and their staff was so lovely! We got a variety of things - my favorites were the escargot, pomme frites (dare I say, some of the best in town), French onion soup, beef bourguignon, and the orange duck (sadly not pictured because I was too excited to eat it which means I'll have to come back!).

Went here with my mom on a Thursday night. The ambiance and dining rooms are beautiful. I had the Boeuf Bourguignon and it was out of this world delicious. My mom ordered the salmon and she loved it. We also ordered the pomme frites but they were not what I expected. They were tasty but not the shoestring fries which is what I experienced while living in France. The owner came out to talk with us which was awesome. He has had such an interesting life. Highly recommend trying this place out!

Amazing dinner experience at Bertrand!! The appetizer options are a little limited but everything's great! We had the escargots and chicken liver pate - so good. For large plate, we went for the scallops with asparagus and beef Bourguignon with mashed potatoes, both recommended by our server Emily. And they were super flavorful and delicious - especially love the scallops, very fresh and cooked to perfections! Shout out to Emily - she's super friendly and gave great recommendations. Both the interior and patio are gorgeous, it's hard to pick lol but with either one, you won't disappoint! Overall highly recommend if you are looking for an authentic French cuisine!

We found this gem on our last trip to Pittsburgh. We came twice in one week last time, so we had to come back. It was just as delicious as we remembered. The escargot was tender and delicious and the pate was wonderful. Then we had the duck a l'orange and steak au poivre for the main course, both delicious. And we finished with pot de crème and cheesecake. And several to go boxes. Absolutely love this place. Wish we could bring it back to North Carolina with us. We haven't been here when it's been warm enough for the patio, but the outdoor area is so cute and looks like it will be great when the weather warms up. We will be back on our next trip. You should definitely come here.

We've been here twice. Tonight we celebrated a 33 year anniversary. I had the scallops, my husband the pork chop. Everything was delicious. Lou greeted us and made us feel like we entered our own dining room. Throughout the night, we heard him greeting several diners warmly. Shannon, guided us on menu options. With champagne (BYOB) and delicious entrees, we had a lovely night. All was topped off with a refreshing key lime dessert. Can't wait to return!!

Not sure where to start. Our friend group celebrates birthdays and we picked Bertrand for the May birthday girl. The vibe: charm, simple elegance. We sat inside because there were 11 of us. Emily was our wonderful server and manager; she was supported by Lili. Our wine was uncorked immediately so the party started (BYO BTW). We started with escargot, delicious! For entrees, quite a variety. Several had the beef bourguignon. Everyone loved it. Two of us had the salad nicoise with perfectly seared ahi tuna and an amazing tarragon dressing, almost a pesto. Other entrees enjoyed included the pork chop, the halibut and the lamb. Sides were ok, very small, but the entrees were generous. We shared a few desserts, pots de crème, French cheesecake and key lime cheesecake. The owner, Luigi "Lou" spent significant time with us making sure we were taken care of. Lovely evening, perfect meal and experience. Definitely coming back.

Should one make a reservation for a Friday night dinner around 6?

Yes I would suggest making a reservation as the restaurant doesn’t have a large number of tables and it is very busy on Fridays.

Service was also very friendly and personable. We ate in the back courtyard, it was hot, but we were so preoccupied by how good the food was, it wasn't a problem. I'd like to try sitting inside the restaurant, but when it's a bit cooler. One critique I'd offer is that two of us ordered the "pot pie" dish, which tasted great but the temperature was too high - we had to wait 15-20 minutes for any small amount of heat reduction. Perhaps that's something to look into, but the dish was still excellent. Note that it's cash and/or Venmo only, so be prepared before visiting.

If a restaurant requires automatic gratuity, that needs to be clearly stated ahead of time and shown on the bill. Tips should not be demanded after the fact through pressure or intimidation, especially with younger customers who may not fully understand the restaurant's cash/card policies. This should have been handled with professionalism, not embarrassment or intimidation. they didn't know it was cash or or cash app or venmo and these kids panicked to make sure that they could pay and came up with it and my question is why can't they take tap on venmo i'm a small business owner and I can use tap to pay with Venmo. You didn't need to embarrass them and make them have a horrible experience. I would've came myself later on as a parent feeling bad about what the experience was and made sure that that waitress got a huge tip now me and my family will never come there. And I will never encourage anybody to go there. You embarrassed a bunch of kids I hope you're proud of yourself. these kids came specifically here because they went to France with their high school and wanted to experience the vibe that Cafe Du Jour had to offer and felt mortified, which is an understatement.

Dressing and greens were fresh - the strawberry substitute was meager at best. Had mussels and fries. The mussels were perfect. The fries were coated in salt and not edible unless the salt was scrapped off. When asked about the salt, the waiter called them "atypical". So, why were they served if not how they typically prepare them? No offer to make it right was forthcoming. Also ordered the French Onion Soup - it was mostly bread - yes, mostly bread. The broth and cheese were fine but I left a bowl full of onion soup soaked bread behind in the bowl. Service was slow even though the restaurant was not busy. Had a beer and a bottle of still water which was fine. Total bill, before tip was $100. Was charged $103 as they added $3 for credit card use. Ok, I get it, but this is really odd anymore and added insult to injury as the dining experience was not good. Restaurants are struggling and my wife and I support local spots all the time. Unfortunately we won't be back. Hopefully they'll climb out of it and remain viable. Three stars is generous and recognition for their longevity- maybe we caught them on a bad day.

We made our reservation specifically for upstairs, but when we arrived, we were seated on the enclosed patio instead. We've actually been seated at the same patio table on our last three visits, so we were disappointed not to experience something different for our anniversary. When I mentioned that we had booked upstairs, the hostess responded that it was "the best place in the house," which felt dismissive rather than acknowledging the discrepancy. When I asked our waitress and showed her the reservation, she explained that they hadn't opened the upstairs because there weren't enough reservations. I would have appreciated that explanation upfront. We also noted our anniversary in the reservation, but our waitress only seemed to know about it after overhearing our conversation. I understand that not every restaurant does something special for an occasion, but when you specifically provide that information during booking, it's disappointing when it goes unacknowledged. The food was good. We split the filet mignon with two sauces on the side and the soufflé, both of which we enjoyed. However, we weren't told that the additional sauce would cost $6, and it wasn't worth the extra charge. We wouldn't have ordered it had we known the price. Splitting just the filet and soufflé came to $110 before tip, so at that price point, we expected a more memorable overall experience. The service was friendly enough, and our water glasses were kept full, but nothing about the evening felt particularly special. We've enjoyed the food here before, but for a restaurant we chose to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, the experience was disappointing. Unfortunately, good food alone wasn't enough to make this occasion feel special.

A seating hostess promptly and kindly greeted us and seated us at a spacious table. Soon our waiter arrived and took our order. He did check in on us throughout our meal. Here are my ratings for what we ate: Chicken soup (daily selection) - 4.5 stars - This cup of soup was made by Mike Griffin of Good Stock PGH. It contained rich broth and lots of chunks of flavorful chicken and vegetables. Moules Frites Belgian - 4 stars - 1.5 pounds of mussels were in flavorful white wine, butter, garlic, carrots, celery, leeks, and mustard. On the side were nicely crispy frites (fries). Carbonnade Flamande - 4 stars - Beef was braised in Belgian brown ale with onions, apricots, cherries, rosemary, and carrots. The beef was juicy and tender. On the side were frites. My husband had no interest in these foods (or the other menu items of salads and sandwiches) so only ate a very small amount. I did enjoy the flavors, although they were not quite as great as what we had in Belgium. The total price for these three foods plus a tea was $74 plus tax and a tip.
