I had the WORST experience at Bernsteins! I ordered a custom dress from there that did NOT come out at all the way I wanted it and they refused to give me back any money. I told them I didn't want the dress and they could keep it and just give me back their profit on the dress (so they weren't losing any money) but they refused. Do not go to this store, the most horrible experience. I spoke to Ann the owner on the phone prior to making the appointment. Ann said we have plenty of dresses to show you. I walked into the store and her first question was how much do you want to spend? When I said around $1,000 she said I doubt I have anything. Then she walked over to their minimal selection and pulled around 5 ugly dresses that were in the price range. The other sales woman said don't say anything bad about the black one that's my dress. Ann rattled off some brands that. a lot of stores carry saying she isn't that type of store. The owner made me feel like I was fat and should buy whatever fits. They wanted me to try on a 2 piece black old lady outfit and said the skirt won't fit but try your best to shimmy into it. I could barely get it in and the sales woman says can't you shimmy any more. That was it! Ann, I'm not fat I'm not a size 0 but you know nothing about me. I lost 100 lbs and I work at my wait every single minute of my sleeping and waking moments. I literally ran out of the store. The owner and sales person were more focused on quadrupling their cabbage recipe than being nice to the customer which was their conversation. I fortunately was with a friend so when I got in the car and started to cry she quickly said don't give that woman so much power. Do not go into this store!!! As the father of two brides, I highly recommend Bernstein's for the mothers' of all the future brides out there. I was so impressed with the honesty and courteous service we received for both weddings. My wife found not one but two gowns that she fell in love with and felt as though they were only made for her. Wendy was fabulous and went through the huge selection of designer gowns to find the perfect fit for my wife. I only give praise when it is earned and I whole-heartedly urge everyone to make Bernstein's their first stop when looking for gowns and/or dresses. read more

I had the greatest experience at Bernstein's. I was looking for a dress for my daughter's wedding. I worked with Wendy, who was awesome! She spent the time to learn about what I was looking for and then brought me in the gowns point on. The selection at Bernstein's was the best that I've seen and I have visited numerous stores similar to this.The store is extremely organized and laid out beautifully. Wendy was so knowledgeable and you can tell had a lot of experience. She respected my budget and stayed within that parameter. She was also very honest and didn't tell me everything looked great. The Marlboro crowd of women are no slouches. They know how to shop and where to shop. So a group of us meet for coffee and the topic is where to shop for the mother of the bride dress. Each of the five women suggest a place as I collect the names and locations for my future reference. I think to myself, nobody recommended Bernstein's.... BUT WHY? Well I found out why as seen in my 2/10 post. In reading the yelp reviews it is apparent that I am not alone in my disappointment. Now Bernstein's was a place that my mother would shop for all her formal wear. We are talking 35 years ago and at that time they were located in Highland Park. It was the place to go! I remember how beautiful the dresses were but what really impressed me was how FRIENDLY the staff was and how CLOSE my mother was with the owners. Such warm people. Now, 35 years later it saddens me to have to leave such a terrible review as I did yesterday. It saddens me for grandpa Bernstein, who worked so hard to learn a trade that would ensure his family financial security. It saddens me for the second Bernstein generation who established the store in Highland Park and worked hard to embrace the community. Here it is the third generation, Bernstein's is still alive, but the legacy attached to the name has taken a sour turn. Read your reviews and make a change! read more

I will give a star because there were a few dresses that I tried on that I wasn't made to feel badly about, however there were several comments said to me throughout the appointment about my size and the fact that dresses wouldn't fit me and that my price point was too low to even look at a section. Body shaming is NOT okay or acceptable and these comments, although not hostile just dismissive and condescending were hurtful and made me feel awful throughout this appointment and the experience shopping for my joyous daughters Bat Mitzvah was not what I had hoped. The sales lady who was helping me also proceeded to tell me of a website that has dresses for women "my size!!' Did you ever? They obviously cater to a specific clientele; older, thinner and with more money. I do NOT recommend this place. Castle Couture or Lolas, even Macys, Nordstrom's....is better. read more

I had the most wonderful experience at Bernsteins! I was looking for a dress for my daughter's wedding, which needed to be very special. I am also not an easy dress fit due to being short and having a large bust size. I went to other stores, but they didn't have nearly the number of different dresses nor the excellent customer service at Bernsteins. I worked primarily with Wendy who is outstanding! She is very knowledgable and extremely helpful, and she made my dress buying experience, which is typically a very difficult experience for me, and my fittings so much fun! Between finding my dress and my fittings, I must have been there at least 5 times, and Wendy spent so much time with me but never made me feel rushed, and always made the experience so much fun! Bernsteins also customizes dresses which gives you even more options than the many they already have in the store. I couldn't recommend Bernsteins more as the perfect place to shop when you need a very special dress! read more

Abhorrent customer service, the worst I've ever experienced!! This store is selling 10 year old designs, yet they act as though they're selling Parisian haute couture on the Champs Elysées. The owner of this establishment is in dire need of a staff overhaul or at the very least, customer service training for the staff. I walked in looking for a gown for an upscale black tie fundraising gala, and the sales woman kept trying to direct me to the sales rack. Run. The women in the store are incredibly rude. The styles are okay but the prices are OUTRAGEOUS. If you can't afford or don't want to buy a dress that's over $1000 they will laugh at you. DO NOT SHOP HERE. My mother stopped in looking for a dress for my wedding and was treated like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. They looked her up and down and told her she needed to educate herself about the cost of dresses. The store is outdated, overpriced, and located in a strip mall. At the recommendation of a friend, I made an appointment to check this place out! I made an appointment and took the day off. I walked in, I was told this " was not a good time". ???? I explained that I had an appointment, took the day off and traveled from south Jersey! I was told there were only 2 salespeople on duty. The store was empty, it was 3:00 on a Wednesday. There was a man in the back, perhaps the owner? The saleswoman kept screaming at him!!! Across the store! I started to look at the dresses hanging, they were old, and out of date. Bernstein's was an amazing shopping experience. My daughter is getting married and of course I needed a mother of the bride gown. They took their time with me to make sure the gown I purchased was the best style and fit for my body. They have so many rich colors and styles of gowns it was so hard to just pick one! Please dont EVER use Bernsteins Fashions. My friend went to Bernsteins for her daughter's wedding gown and left a deposit. During the course of the year, her daughter was diagnosed with cancer and the wedding was cancelled. All of the vendors understood the severity and sadness of this situation and refunded the deposit - all the vendors, EXCEPT Bernsteins. The owner told us that "shes not responsible for everyones heart ache" and would only offer a credit. I was so disgusted and horrified at the lack of humanity of this company. At a time when the family needs to worry about medical bills and taking care of their daughter, the refunded deposit would have been the humane thing to do. I would not support this business, and would ask you to find somewhere else to buy your dress. read more

This place is the WORST!!! I took my wife there and the sales lady Edna was so rude I thought we were on Candid Camera or something. It was actually comical. She ordered a dress and then my wife found a nicer one at another store an hour later. We called them and they wouldn't cancel the order (even know it was only an hour later) and made us pay for it. What a fun day was had yesterday. Mother of the bride, purchased her gown, and dress for the rehearsal dinner. The bride-to-be purchased a very classy dress for her rehearsal dinner. Anne was great! First dress she pulled from the rack was amazing for Lauren and she will look like a model wearing it. As for myself, I purchase a great formal pants suit that will be worn for the rehearsal dinner and several other formal events. I did not find Anne nor any of her staff rude (even the seamstress was fun and very knowledgeable). I find the prior reviews unfair. DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!! TERRIBLE customer service!!! The owner really needs to re-evaluate the people she hires! I see this behavior is a trend. When I walked in the store there were three associates in view; a blonde haired woman who was ringing up a customer and two other ladies who were hanging Holiday decorations. I stood there for a minute or so before I was acknowledged. Which was after I stared intensely at the older woman hanging the decorations, she then said, "Give me a minute". She finished what she was doing and approached my mother and I. I told her we were looking for mother of the bride dresses and she thought I was the mother of the bride, which is INSANE. I am 29 and there's no way anyone would think I have a child old enough to be married. But some people are ignorant like that, so I refused to dignify her underhanded insult with a reaction. I tried to explain to her the type of dress we were looking for and she Continuously, LOUDLY and OBNOXIOUSLY talked over us, we couldn't get a word in edge wise. I proceeded to walk away and began looking at dresses, which she followed me and told me I wasn't allowed to look at them without her. I then explained to her that she clearly doesn't know what I want and hasn't tried to listen to what we're looking for, so how is this going to work? Her response was, "Well, that's what the owner wants us to do!" So, she started to pull dresses that SHE loved after I repeatedly told her that wasn't what we were looking for and she continued to try and push dresses down our throat and talked non-stop about why she loves the dresses..blah blah blah. I wish I would've got this woman's name. She has a raspy voice, one of those voices that sounds like she smokes a pack of cigarettes a day, a fairly thin build, brown hair and probably in her late 50's. Anyway, I inquired about a particular designer and she walked away. I assumed she was going to pull some dresses from that particular designer and low and behold she was back at the front of the store with another sales associate hanging decorations. Really?! The decorations are more important than our business?! No problem, you lost out on a $2000 purchase! I WOULD NEVER recommend this place to anyone, it was such an unpleasant experience! It was quite comical to me the air she presented towards us, as if she was better than us or if we weren't good enough to shop at that store, which by the way was the most run of the mill place we visited that entire day. Not to mention, my wedding is an $80,000 wedding, my ring could probably pay for the car she drives...so please, relax with the snootiness because you are far from high class. Totally over this place and will make sure to spread the word!!! Oh and did I mention as my mother and I left the store she stared through the window and laughed...very unprofessional! read more

The the rudest staff I have ever come across. Make no assumptions, you do not know anything about the customer coming in. If one has entered, one has a gala or a black tie event to attend. She may be a professional, a doctor, perhaps an attorney, even a judge. The "service", or lack there of, was shameful. A customer without class would have caused a scene at the way she was approached and treated. Lucky for the high class acting saleswoman, she deals with people classier than herself. The saleswoman was so awful, that one of her colleague attempted to step in and help. Clearly even she felt uncomfortable. Suffice it to say, this shop will never have my business, nor the business of anyone in my professional or social circles. I was so poorly treated by a woman who sold dresses, that I was not so much as angry, but embarrassed FOR her and disappointed by the store that they had help that represented them as she did. read more

I came in looking for a designer prom dress and they told me to go to David's Bridal, as if I wouldn't be able to pay for anything in their price range. This is literally the most disgusting store I've ever walked into. It appears more "thrift shop" than it does high end fashion. Upon walking in, I was greeted by a sales woman immediately. (Which is saying a lot, based on the other reviews I've read...) We had a casual conversation about the weather, and she asked me what I was looking for. I explained to her that my sister was looking for a prom dress, and she IMMEDIATELY cut me off saying they don't "do" proms. You sell thousand dollar dresses, but you don't "DO" proms?! Whatever. I casually said "okay, let's say my sister buys a dress just to buy a dress..." She cuts me off AGAIN telling me their dresses are not "in my price range," that the lowest priced dress there is "TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS!!" Big whoop. How much was your high horse? I didn't even bother to ask her how she knew my income based on our 3 minute interaction...I wished her a good day, told her to enjoy the weather, and got the hell out of there. If you want to show up to your event smelling like moth balls in an overpriced garment...this is the shop for you. If you're looking for class- stay far, far away from this establishment. read more

I bought a dress there twelve weeks ago. When I went today to pick it up they were HORRIBLE. The alterations they said they would be able to do weren't going to be done. They said it would be impossible and ruin the integrity of the dress. I left with the dress and paid them the rest in cash because I was so intimidated. I ordered a gown from a trunk show at Bernsteins in September 2014 for my daughter's wedding in May of 2015. Certainly enough time 8 months approximatley). I was assured by the designer's rep that it would be in in three months I called the store at the end of December to see if the dress.came in and the rude saleswoman told me I was crazy to think that it would be in. The wedding wasn't until May and to be patient ( as all women loose weight before the wedding and you want it fitted right). So I was told to call at the end of February, that the dress will be in at that time. I call February 28th, and was told the dress isn't in and that they are calling the designer to check on the status of the dress. I get a phone call back on March 3rd to let me know the designer is "still working on the dress and it will ship anyday". well of course, after many phone calls, I realize that this dress is not coming in any time soon and and I am being put off, told I'm too nervous and that the dress is coming. I finally speak with the owner on a Thursday mid March and tell her if the dress isn't in by Saturday, I will be coming in to get my deposit back ( Now I know this dress isn't coming in) and I must quickly find another one. She claims the dress is in transit and that it won't be in on Saturday, be patient it will be there the following week. I gave her the deadline of Saturday, as all trust and customer service is severely lacking.and I knew I had to quickly find another dress with only 8 weeks left to this wedding. Sure enough I get a phone call that Saturday, the dress came in. I go to the store and see the dress. IT IS A FAKE!! It didn't come in the designer bag, was not the same material & thank goodness I had pictures of myself taken when I first tried it on, and clearly the lines were all wrong and style a poor knock-off. This is the most vile and unscrupulous establishment. They tried to pass on a fake designer dress and think that I would fall for it. When I showed them the pictures, they said, "We will work with you". They knew what they were doing by passing this fake, cheap knock-off on to me. I did get my deposit back and did end up going to a repubatable establishment to get my gown.Buyer Beware at Bernsteins!! They are liars !! read more

I went here today to pick up a dress for someone else because I work in the area, and I had an awful experience in here (and I wasn't even shopping!). One woman was in the store helping a customer, and I was completely ignored, not even welcomed to the store. A minute later a woman walked out from the dressing room and was looking for something for another customer. Then she just stood there, completely ignoring me. I asked "Excuse me, do you work here?" She answered rudely, "Yes, but I'm helping a customer." I said "I just am picking a dress up for someone", and she quickly repeated herself "But I'm with a customer!" I said I just need to be rung up, and she wouldn't take one minute to ring me up while the other customer was changing. I couldn't believe she couldn't help me, or at the very least ask me politely to wait one minute. It was just as if I would have to come back another time...Then she started yelling for a man to come out and help me. He finally came out after her yelling for him and he proceeded to tell me they don't take credit or debit cards, that I'd have to write a check or go to the ATM. After going to the bank and returning the VERY rude woman rang me up and barely spoke two words to me, and also proceed to obviously take note of what I was wearing. I read Roni L.'s review and we must have had the same woman, she had a raspy smokers voice and stunk of head ache inducing perfume. This store desperately needs new employees.
