Overall the apartment building is pretty nice and the location is convenient (Potomac Park location), but the main reason I'm posting a positive review is because of the property maintenance staff member at this location, Darwin. Dealing with maintenance issues in an apartment is usually stressful and inconvenient, but Darwin has helped to take care of any issues efficiently and kindly. Every time Darwin responds to a maintenance request, he does so promptly and with the utmost respect and care. He listens carefully to my explanation of the issue, thoroughly investigates it, and comes up with prompt, effective solutions that resolve the issue and bring me peace of mind. Darwin acts with kindness and respect, not only for the tenant, but also for their space. He doesn't make you feel like you're a burden for submitting a request, or that your request is frivolous. He genuinely cares about fixing the problem (no matter how small) so that you can go back to enjoying your apartment. I know other friends who have had difficult experiences with the maintenance staff at other apartment buildings, and I feel so thankful that Darwin is here at Potomac Park. The way Darwin treats me as a tenant has significantly influenced my positive feelings about Potomac Park; he is truly the most supportive staff member. Thank you times a million, Darwin! Bernstein Management brings back so many fond memories.. Straight out of college and after securing my first full time job, I rented an apartment from Bernstein. Resided in a studio for over three years. Those three years were so pleasant. After classmates gushed about the building, their apartments, and the customer service, I immediately scheduled a tour. And quickly signed a lease. Starting with the grand front entrance, the building is stunningly beautiful both outside and inside. The neighboring, also managed by Bernstein, was also kept to perfection. The high ceilings, staircases, and pristine wooden floor. The elevator is so adorable and reminiscent of an earlier era. Yet it consistently operated smoothly. My walk-in closet was massive. I was easily able to fit my many pairs of shoes and dresses. With spare room to continue my shopping addiction lol. The neighborhood is also inviting. I used to jog on the high school track across the street. The other apartments were just as well kept as mine. Although the laundry room was in the basement, the hallways were so brightly lit and clean that you felt safe doing laundry at all hours of the day. My former apartment building was on 13th and Clifton. The building was impeccably kept both outside, the common areas, apartment. My apartment was delivered sparkling clean, with glossy wooden floors. I made a total of one repair request during my entire tenancy. The staff is so proactive that they'd reach out for you. To schedule regular exterminator services. I never needed one and declined. My neighbors stated the same. They even reached out to update my kitchen cabinets. Which we're already in great condition and charming. . A contractor arrived within an hour. And the repairs were addressed the same day. Now that's professionalism. The hallways were consistently quiet. I always became giddy after a long day at work or a night out. In anticipation to my return home. Bernstein's apartments were so desirable. That there was a long waiting list for vacant units. Friends begged me to inform them immediately if I terminated my lease. Had I not relocated, I would have remained a resident to this day. And upgraded to a two bedroom unit. From my balcony, I had a sick view of the monuments. My couch, armoire, dresser, and bed easily fit in the unit. I also had room for a cute patio table and chairs. From my bath tub, I had a view of the beautiful neighborhood. Although DC summers are hot, didn't need an a/c. The well kept and antique windows and balcony door provided sufficient fresh air. The staff were always accommodating and polite. When I relocated out of state, I was on the verge of tears. Knowing that I would be leaving my first and favorite apartment behind. Thank you Bernstein Management for making adulting so safe, convenient, and memorable. Thanks for setting a standard for excellence. And giving your former and current tenants a high and quite accomplishable standard of tenancy. read more

EXTREMELY horrible customer service from the property management personnel here at ParkPlace at Petworth Metro. The Berstein corporate office has been receiving consistent complaints for at least a year and is conspicuously uninvolved and uninterested, in the ongoing issues. Berstein corporate office has been receiving consistent complaints, regarding the Property Manager, Glenny De La Cruz, and her lack of demonstrated property management capability, her propensity to lie, and her very vengeful and spiteful attitude toward some residents and staff employees. Also, the building repairs or lack thereof, hiring unskilled and unlicensed workers to do construction that lingers on for months. The unfinished projects and open construction left sitting for months make the area unsightly, dangerous, and prone to accidents. They look for ways to increase their bottom line by implementing poorly thought-out strategies and new rules that inconvenience the residents, and the people whom they are supposed to service. It is like we are being held captive and forced to endure these horrible conditions because of the lack of action by Berstein Corporate. read more

I am not certain whether my experiences are due to sexism that emanates from Bernstein or from the building in which I lived, but the sexism I experienced as a heterosexual married woman AFTER Bernstein took over our building is one for the history books. Once my husband was added to the lease that was obtained first in my name, all correspondence was addressed to him and I was taken off the building email. I had to explicitly go and ask for my email to be reinstated so I could know what was happening in the building. We are now separated. When I left the building when my lease ended in August 2020, I was living there alone for 2 months. They wanted to insist that my husband fill out a $200 roommate vacate form (meaning that if I were living with a male roommate, they would have kicked me off the email as well?). Luckily, he was trying to screw me over so he wouldn't do it. I finally got him to write to say he would be moving out on the date of the contract ending, so that got settled. During the almost 2 years at this building I paid ALL the rent (my husband paid once or twice from MY bank account), but the check I was sent with the security deposit return was written out to my husband! (my supposed ROOMMATE who had never paid the rent). I assumed that both of our names would be on the check so I could deposit in the joint account we still have. But MY NAME is the first one on the joint account as it was on this lease. There is a paper attached to the check that has my name written first, so the check was purposely written to my HUSBAND. Rest assured that sexism is alive and well and impacts in the places you would not expect. read more

Giving 2 stars because repair requests are usually filled promptly, and their small leasing office is generally responsive and accessible. They deliver bad news as kindly as they can. However, they have some constraints on requests that I do not agree with. Also, month-to-month rent (after 1 year) offers flexibility. I am MOSTLY upset with the late fee that I was charged after believing I had paid my rent on time, and I was told that I (and my roommate who has never been late on rent in 6 years) could not pay online for the next 6 months. I argued this, as well as the late fee, and only the former was waived. I was told that since it was the first "late" payment, the $50 fee would likely be going toward the next month's rent "because the property manager wouldn't approve it." I mentioned that it's very unfair to be charging people fees like this during the Coronavirus. They couldn't have cared less. We've experienced similar issues here. It's less about the money, more about the principle. read more

I lived in a Bernstein property for 7 years. The final months of my occupancy were probably the worst, but that's a good thing, and it had nothing to do with Bernstein. In terms of apartment maintenance, Bernstein always came through. When I got mold in my closet, I got a free month's rent. Now, that I am dealing with a company that barely has it together I have a deeper appreciation for how Bernstein prioritizes tenant needs and safety. read more

Please don't live here. Incessant cockroaches on all floors of my building, despite frequent exterminations. Washers are expensive and work poorly. I've had several leaks and no one has repaired them yet nor told me when they will. Staff is quick to respond to issues brought to them, but haven't fixed most issues. Outdated gas stoves leaked during the night while I was sleeping (yikes!). No issues with mold, walls are very thick and sound proof, view is beautiful, tenants are nice and quiet. However, the stress isn't worth the price, unfortunately. The dude's assistant is so sweet though and I hope the best for her! Worst of all, no one even apologized for all the things I went through. Not a single sorry. I was able to get out of my lease six months early because the living situation was so bad. They withheld my $1300 deposit for almost TWO MONTHS after I moved out, which isn't legal. Please don't live here! read more

I've leased 2 properties from this company in the last 8 years and I am very please with them, They respond quickly to my calls and act on issues quickly, my a/c broke and they sent someone to fix it the same night, I had a noise in the room where my baby sleeps, I talked to them about it and they send some to fix the noise on the roof, ( not a big deal but is good to know they respond) dishwasher broke and they bought a new one. I had no expectations going with this company but they are very professional. it makes a my life easier when I don't have to worry that If something is not working, it will take weeks for the management company to fix it. read more

Management is unfriendly and not very customer oriented. There is a breakdown of something or problem every now and then. Either water pipe break in the winter and you have no water as there is major repair going on or there is no a/c working in winter. Bathroom gets mold regularly. More recently, the dryer in the laundry room has always a problem. Twice there was smoke in the laundry room due to overheating of the dryers. I have lost money many times due to faulty dryers or washing machines and the Bernstein management will not easily replace the money with excuses, 'we don't have change to give' or 'the machines are fine, only you had issue with it over the weekend'.... The management gives the impression that it does not really care about the residents, except of course the monthly rents. The central controlled A/C and heater system is also very old and full of dust. Quality of air is not the great even when filters are changed. read more

I first contacted Legation House about viewing the property in June 15 through Zillow, no answer. Email from leasing center June 20, Bernstein Management emails June 20, and 22. I filled out a DC Applicant form. No answer. For two weeks I tried to see the apartment, I was told I had to wait almost two weeks until June 30, this was corrected to July 1 on June 22. I called Bernstein Management to see why I could not come to see it earlier? I see apartments the same day even with Covid. No answer. Today, 6/24 I am told the apartment that could not be seen for three to four weeks is now taken. Would I like to tour the building? Why can't they say the place is being kept for someone else? Totally unprofessional Bernstein Management and a waste of my time. read more

I lived in one of their properties, Castle Manor, for two years. The staff responds quickly, and are friendly, polite, professional and helpful. I also found the rent very affordable for the location. The building was always kept clean and I never saw any vermin or dealt with any building issues. I would have stayed in the apartment for years had I not moved to New York. Having to deal with unresponsive, uncaring, and rude New York landlords makes me miss Esther, Christian, Vince, Sheryl, and the Bernstein folks! read more

If I could give them a zero I would. I currently live in Bernstein Management property and they just entered my property for the second time illegally and without proper notice. I am trying to speak with someone about this issue and of course there is no one available or willing and at the same time I don't know what they will do to improve this situation outside of changing my locks and requesting a key from me each time they need to enter. How am I expected to feel safe in my home when I come home and find people have been here without any notice or consent? Oh and also there's the fact that it's ILLEGAL since landlords are required to give at least 24 hours notice unless it's an emergency. read more

I recently applied to an apartment building managed by the Bernstein Management Corporation and was accepted, however, upon receiving the final lease package there were multiple discrepancies between the advertised listing and the terms of the lease. Additionally, clerical mistakes from the leasing office initially sent me paperwork that even listed an address for a completely different apartment than which I had applied. Since I am needing to move cross-country on a short timeline, without having an opportunity to visit or tour units, these multiple mistakes and the falsely advertised lease terms raised too many red flags for me to enter into a contract given the circumstances. Through the application process $82 was collected in application fees and a $300 "earnest fee" was collected to be applied to the security deposit for the rental unit. I was extremely understanding of the errors made by BMC, and made the reasonable request that the $300 earnest fee be refunded given that it was collected in the context of a false advertisement. To this point, BMC staff have refused to refund the fee. This situation is outrageous and it looks like BMC will force me to have to file with a small claims court to recover the entire $382.00 that was collected under false pretenses. This is extra frustrating because I was being extremely reasonable in my initial request for only a $300 refund. In reality, the entire $382 was collected under false pretenses and I am certain a small claims court will agree. I was subject to staff errors and unscrupulous business practices in my interaction with Bernstein Management Corporation. Do not apply at apartments managed by this company. read more

I would give 0 stars if I could. We have had mice in our apartment for what is now more than five months and management has done next to nothing. We have caught seven mice in our unit, and have been woken up several times at night, and seem them in the kitchen, despite maintaining a clean home at all times. Do not move into the August (2147 O Street NW) as this building is infested, and rent from a company that actually cares about your living conditions. read more

My husband and I have lived here for 1 year and feel that BMC is the best rental management company we've had across 5 states. Oriana at Highview/Castle Manor is extremely pleasant and kind. She made us feel comfortable from the very beginning. The premises were always in pristine condition and maintained all the charm of the original construction 100 years ago. We were planning to stay for much longer but found a buying opportunity, which is the only reason we are leaving. We would recommend this group and building to anyone in DC. read more

I was very disappointed in the way this company refuses to accommodate tenants based on their individual needs. I began a career that requires one year of relatively low pay, which meant that I could not meet the 1:3 rent to income ratio. However, I offered to write a check for the full 12 month lease. To my astonishment, the company refused to accept it. I felt as though I was treated like a common criminal. I suspect that this income requirement is in place as a means of indirectly discriminating against certain classes who tend to not produce high income. I would not recommend this large, faceless company as a landlord. read more

I've lived in two properties managed by Bernstein in the last couple of years. My apartment in the first property looked nice but it turned out to be fairly run down - I had mice and cockroach issues and a pipe broke and flooded a small section of the apartment - but I learned that you get what you pay for in DC given the low cost and great location of that apartment. The management was very responsive to my problems. Someone woke up in the middle of the night to address the broken pipe and the management personally took one of the mice outside when they caught it with their trap. The issues were resolved quickly and professionally and within a short time the mice and cockroaches were gone for good I later decided to move into a bigger apartment and I stayed with Bernstein because of their excellent service. I toured a couple of other apartments with various management companies before deciding to go back to Bernstein. I felt like a lot of the other management companies were inattentive when I toured (one actually snarled at me that their apartments "are expensive" when I asked for a tour because I look younger than I am) and I didn't trust that they would address any issues if they did arise. The management at my second Bernstein apartment was the best that I've had in my rental history and the repairman is extremely friendly and pleasant. Unfortunately, the old property manager recently left and the quality has decreased (for example, renters get frequent late notices because of a computer glitch that they can't seem to work out and our responses to repair inquires have been accompanied by an unfriendly lecture of some sort) but I'm sure that Bernstein would address my concerns if I reached out to someone who isn't assigned to this building. I've noticed that the properties that have their management living in them are the best managed. The second property was more expensive but it also is mouse/cockroach free, has had minimal repairs, and the appliances and finishings look much nicer. A pet peeve of mine with all of their properties has been that they use really cheap paint that marks-up very easily so I suggest repainting the apartment before you move-in. read more

Everyone that you talk to that lives in a Bernstein Management property, has nothing but good things to say and I now understand why. They are extremely quick to fix things and respond to any issues you may have. Any time I email them saying something needs to be fixed, etc. they immediately respond to my email and have the issue fixed that day. The plastic rod inside our toilet snapped and kept running and we needed it fixed. I emailed our property manager that night around 11pm.. I got a response from them and the toilet was fixed by 10am the next day. I had another issue with a small crack in our wall and it was the same thing - I emailed them the issue, they responded and came up and fixed it within a few hours. They are a great and reliable management company. read more

I would like to echo the comments made by the other two commenters. They are very responsive to any problems that arise in my apartment - everything from snaking a clogged drain, to fixing the walls after the earthquake. And, while the quality of the work is not always the best (hence 4 stars and not 5), it is often more than adequate to address the issue. I am very happy living under Bernstein Management. read more

All they care about is filling those apartments and getting their money somehow. My son rented an apartment with a roommate at West End Residences this past year. They agreed to a 9 month lease (August to May) because they were students and made us pay a higher rent because of it. In April we discover that they require a 2 months notice and tell us that we will have to pay rent for part of the month of June. Because we were splitting the rent 45/55 I ask for an invoice for our part of the rent and are told that they do not issue invoices. They tell me to pay my part and the rest will be billed to the other party, which I do. They forget to remind me to deduct the security deposit I had given them in august from what we owe. So now I ask them to reimburse me the security deposit and they wont because the roommate has not paid yet so they are keeping my money. And all of a sudden they are capable of producing invoices because I get one in the mail for what the other party owes and am also threatened to be sent to collections. These are people who take advantage of college students, who do not care about making things right. This is just a business and it is all about money and they couldnt care less about the consequences of their actions. read more

This management company is absolutely terrible. They have poor leasing/package pickup hours, and bad maintenance (we have dealt with a clogged bath drain the day we moved in and water damage in windowsills). Their lease policy might not even be legal (they would not allow us to read our lease until the day we moved in, and it took a hissy fit from me to get them to read a similar lease for another unit at an earlier time, and they wouldn't even let me take it with me so I had to read it in their office). Worst of all, they lost my check. That, in itself, would not be terrible. I understand that it happens. But the way that they handled the issue was unacceptable. They failed to notify me that they didn't think they had received my check. On about the 12th of the month, I noticed that my check had not been deposited, so I reached out to them and asked why they hadn't deposited it. The woman at the leasing office said she had never received it (even though she had received my roommate's check, which was in the same envelope as mine), but said she believed me that the check had been lost. She said she would need to "investigate" and talk to someone "at corporate" to determine whether they could waive the late fee that would normally apply to a late rent payment. That day I obtained a bank check for the missing rent amount and delivered it, and confirmed that the leasing office would get back to me about the fine. I heard nothing for nearly a month, until I received a form letter stating that my "account" had not been paid and that legal action would be taken if I didn't pay the fee within 9 days. That's one way to "follow up" on the results of the decision. Ironically, the form letter was precisely of the type that one would expect to receive if the rental company hadn't received their RENT on time. I will never live in a building that this company owns. Ever. I will tell my friends and anyone who asks us not to live there. I suggest that you avoid living there too. It is not worth the hassle. read more

Everyone is rating Bernstein Management Company with great reviews, that may be only for their properties in Washington, DC, the property known as Doral Terrace Apartments in Forestville, Maryland, they treat there tenants at this property with no respect and they are known as "Slum Lords" at the property, there accounting office with Malcolm and Sarah, always cause confusion with the tenants, always lie to the tenants and always try to get over on there tenants at the property by adding additional high fees for basically anything this company can think of, there are old appliances in the apartments, old cabinets and they won't give you new carpet unless you've been in your apartment for at least 9 years, when I moved into my apartment about 2 years ago the carpet had stains, I asked for new carpet they and they wanted to charge me a fee, the living room blinds where needed to be replaced when I did my initial move in inspection they tried to charge me a fee of $150.00 to have my blinds fixed, which is something that is suppose come with a stand with a initial move, I go on & on, according to where I live at Doral Terrace Apts. in Forestville managed by Bernstein Management Group, the are the worst!!!!! read more
