Three of us from out of town and craving Chinese food. All dishes were hot and tasty. Generous amount of lobster meat in the shell served with ginger and scallions. Bernard's usually has great food, although as of late it can be hit or miss. The reason for the 2 stars is the service. While service is usually not always horrible, some of the wait staff are abrupt and rude. Went in for a late dinner with friends this past weekend. Within a minute of being seated the waiter snapped and told us we needed to order immediately as the kitchen was closing. His tone was arrogant and rude. I went here with a group of 3 to celebrate our friends birthday. We had a reservation for 7PM and we get there ten minutes early and check in with the hostess. We tell the hostess our name and when our reservation is and she looks at us very confused. She was very rude and was not welcoming at all. She told us to come back for 7:15 which was annoying because we made a reservation for 7. We did get seated exactly at 7:15. Our waitress was really nice and friendly which made up for the rude hostesses. Our waitress made a "birthday cake" out of pineapples and lit a candle for my friend without us even asking the waitress to do this! She was such a good waitresses, the food was absolutely delicious. If you go here on a weekend night, I recommend making a reservation because even though we didn't get seated on time, the place was packed. read more

I went to Bernard's a lot back in high school (when it was still in the chestnut hill mall) and it was delicious every time. It's one of those places that you go to and never have bad service or a bad meal. Everytime I would go it was 5 star service! Bernard's is now located past Chestnut Hill Mall at "The Street" Shopping Mall. This place is a hidden gem! I would say it is one of the nicest Chinese Food restaurants in the area by far! What we get when we go here? Starter: Crab Rangoon (6) $5.95 Comes with the spicy mustard sauce and duck sauce I believe. Hands down top 2 best crab rangoons I have ever had! Hot & Sour Soup $3.75 Very good not too overpowering of flavors but always a favorite between my boyfriend and I. Entrée: Orange Flavored Beef $17.95 You have to like oranges/ orange flavoring to eat this it hits your mouth with orange flavoring! So delicious comes with a side of white rice. We also got a scorpion bowl for two to share and it was amazing! I recommend this place to anyone walking around the mall shopping or for a special occasion dinner with family or friends. We went for our 3 year anniversary and it was amazing! The service is always top notch! I just had some lunch at work ordered in from Bernard's. It tasted really good. I had a bit of everything - sesame chicken, chicken lo mein, spring rolls, calamari, e.t.c. It was very good. I work in Newton Corner, and there aren't any Chinese places to eat within walking distance. This was a good surprise :-) I gave it 4 stars because this is the first time I've had it, and for me to give it 5 stars, I'd have to come there and try their food in their restaurant to observe decor, service, and more services. Went to Bernard's last Saturday, we were a big party of 8 hungry adults. The restaurant is a small family style place. But the food.... the food is to die for. We tried all kinds of things to share: salt & pepper calamari, soft shell crab, clams, fried dumplings, vegetarian spring rolls, pan seared stuffed eggplant with shrimp mousse, steamed filet of Chilean sea bass, duck moo shi, sauteed shrimp with glazed walnuts, lo mein, shrimp with avocado in plum and sake and orange flavored beef. All the dishes were lick-your-fingers good. I would like to single out the clams, both shrimp dishes, spring roll, the duck and the beef. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. Feel free to order the plum wine, it's delicious. P.S. Our server was the funniest and nicest man ever. Been there. Used to do that. Bernard's, long time staple at this mall delivers with consistency. But that consistency is for fresh but bland and salty food with uninspired sauces. The quality of the ingredients is tops. The service was attentive and proficient. But the food was essentially phoning in the performances. As the pricing is upscale suburban premium, I am hoping for something that tastes several grades above food court. I am hoping they find their groove. I took a friend from NY to Bernards tonight because last time I went, the food was fresh! Tonight the food was terrible. The crab Rangoon tasted like they bought it from the super market. It was saturated in oil, wasn't fresh and had no crab in it. The mooshi chicken had so much soy sauce that when I put it in the pancake (which was dry and cracked around the edges) the liquid poured out onto the plate, and I couldn't put the pancake down because it would have gotten all wet! The string beans were not hot and not fresh! They tasted like the end of the batch too....very disappointed!! read more

This place is a real toss up, the prices are quite high and some of the dishes were definitely worth it, while others certainly left something to be desired. The decor and atmosphere of the pace is similar to a P.F. Chang's, so nothing particularly special there. The Scorpion bowl was delicious and certainly lethal, in the best way possible, I would recommend. The highlights of the meal were definitely the Chinese Sausage Fried Rice and the Lemon Chicken. The crab rangoons and lo-mein were good, but nothing special. We also had some spicy wontons in peanut sauce that were not very good at all, they were not spicy and the taste of peanuts really overpowered the entire dish. My son picked this place out on our way home from Boston. Hadn't seen it before and never heard of it before. It IS a Chinese food restaurant. It is very clean, nice and upscale looking inside, and the prices are less than P.f.Chang's, and a little higher than your corner Chinese food dive. It was a busy Friday lunchtime and we were greeted as soon as we walked in. Actually, we were immediately seated in the high tables at the bar after accepting the offer of a high table and being sat immediately. So we sat in the bar area and watched the three TVs, each with a different channel. The bartender was the table server and was at our table within a minute or two to get our drink order. Drinks showed up on the table within minutes. We ordered a Crab Rangoon app, and we each ordered a lunch combination, which is about $12 and includes soup and two rangoons, or I think you can have two spring rolls instead. After the order was placed, the hot and sour soup cane out very quickly, and the rangoon app shortly thereafter. The hot and sour soup is what I wanted it to be -- normal hot and sour soup, but perfect. Taste was perfectly hot and perfectly sour. It was very good and not thick like some places. The rangoon apps were crispy and tasty, and I could clearly taste crab and feel the texture of crab in the contents. Meals came out and looked very inviting, and each meal tasted as good as it looked. I knew this was kind of off my diet, but it came with steamed white rice and steamed broccoli (and not steamed to a pathetic pile of an excuse for broccoli...it was real broccoli that actually tasted fresh). It tasted as good as it looked. The chicken was not overly fried and not overly breaded. The chicken meat itself was all white meat and tender. The sauces were great as well. Mine was sweet and sour chicken and my son's was sesame chicken. There was nothing but goodness on the table. And the portions were adequate for each of us. Not too much so you had to take a bunch home and fill your fridge, but enough to eat in the restaurant, enjoy it, and leave satisfied without leftovers. As expected, the table was cleared efficiently, and the bill processed quickly. I think we were in and out in less than 45 minutes. I would say they cater to a business lunch crowd, but it is casual, since we were in shorts and t-shirts and felt completely comfortable. When we left, the bartender shouted 'thank you' to us as we left the bar area, and so did the host at the host station as we went out the door. Interestingly, there was an old man standing out on the sidewalk in a dress shirt and slacks. (huh? did I just use the word 'slacks'?). He made it a point to stop us on the sidewalk and said, "Thank you for coming" in the same way an elder relative would thank you for coming to their birthday party. I thought he was going to hug us. Haha! Anyway, I don't know if this person outside was Bernard, or if he was even connected to this restaurant, but I assumed that he was at least the general manager, if not the owner. So we left very satisfied, and didn't spend a fortune on a really good lunch in a somewhat expensive area (Chestnut Hill). There was ample free parking in the parking lot, which served many businesses there including the movie theatre. (yes, 're' not 'er'. I feel sophisticated when I spell 'yoghurt' with an'h'). Seems like Bernard's would be a great place for dinner as well, and a pre or post movie meal and/or drinks as well. I really like this place and will be back as soon as I can. We came here around 3 on a Sunday afternoon. They had the dim sum menu available but they seemed to have sold out on the baos by the time we got there. We got the shrimp dumplings, chicken fingers, crab ragoons, beef sticks, udon and beef sautéed and pan seared mein with seafood. I only tried the latter 4 and the food was not bad. It's what you would call Americanized Chinese food with a more upscale vibe and less greasy. The crab ragoons were basic although a bit wimpy with the filling. I love beef sticks and it's kind of hard to go wrong. It was tender and had a delicious marinade on it. The udon and beef had a weird charred taste to it, but nobody else found that bothersome. The beef was tender in the noodles too. The pan seared noodles were perfect. I kind of hate it when restaurants douse it in gravy so the noodles aren't crunchy any more. They had just the right amount to dress it. The noodles also weren't too charred and was just the right amount of crispness. The seafood looked fresh. Like I said, it's Americanized Chinese food and you kind of pay more for the setting than anything else. Bernard's is a great choice if you are looking to chow down on some Americanized Chinese food in a place that caters to more of a sit-down crowd (so yes, the prices reflect that - expect to pay a couple bucks more per item than at your neighborhood divey Chinese restaurant). We split a bunch of stuff here - veggie lo mein, pork spare ribs, chicken wings, peking ravioli, fried rice, etc. My fave was actually the pork spare ribs - not usually something I gravitate towards, but here they were perfectly flavored and not too fatty. I devoured those things. Service was good, and everything came out very fast (some stuff did come out earlier than the rest, but that worked out fine for our family-style dining). This is the worst restaurant in all of Boston. The owners could not be any ruder, and fraudulent. It was a couple of weeks ago, where they misplaced something in my takeout. I thought nothing of it. However, the other night, I ordered Beef Chow Fun. When I arrived, they said how lucky I was, because it was the last beef chow fun. When I got home, it was some crispy noodle dish with shrimp and mushrooms. I called, and the manager picked-up. She told me that they were out of chow fun. I asked why I had been lied to like that, and why I wasn't asked if I wanted something else. All she did was laugh it off. This place is an insult to good service. Typical when I make reservations, we're seated at the high-tops. Although not awful, I want the experience of being seated. Especially if you're paying $$$. I called, made the reservation, and told them I would like a normal table. Surprisingly, my wife and I were seated at a regular table. Ok.... that's nice. What happens next disappointed. We felt rushed, almost pushed to order right away. Ok, drinks came... server comes back to take our order. Food comes.. it's very mediocre. I wasn't razzled and dazzled for the price. There's a pricey asian food place in brookline that is absolutely worth the price. Bernard's.. not so much. Food was eh, service was eh, the place is cute, the location is ok.... Even though this is Chinese restaurant, they don't have Chinese menu. The restaurant decoration and layout is pretty modern. The location is good with plenty of parking and it's next to a movie theater. The beef teriyaki is very good. It's tender and well marinated. The beef fried rice on the other hand is oily, which I won't order again. The crispy chicken cutlet with lemon sauce is awesome. I don't usually like fried food or chicken, but this one is really good. The chicken meat is tender. The fried food goes very well with the lemon sauce. Maybe I hold Chinese restaurants to a higher standard because I AM Chinese or maybe the food here just isn't good. First of all, it's horribly Americanized. There is nothing authentic about this place. Secondly, the quality of food is quite poor and it's not that cheap. There is nothing "Hong Kong style" or "upscale" about this place. I love how people compare this place to a Hong Kong eatery when most people have never even been to Hong Kong or know what Cantonese cuisine even is. But then again, if this place was truly Cantonese, would Americans eating in a shopping mall bite? ATMOSPHERE - The decor isn't that nice considering it's in a fairly upscale mall. The people who run the restaurant are actually Chinese, which is a start but the food is definitely catering to Americans. SERVICE - Perfectly fine except you don't get any choice of tea, which is the weirdest thing to me considering it's a Chinese restaurant. FOOD - Shrimp dumplings (har gow) - This was so completely over steamed that the skin was a mushy mess. The filling was also too ground up and didn't have fresh shrimp. Shrimp rice roll - This was also over steamed. The rice noodle was so thick and lacked the delicacy it is supposed to have. Spicy chicken with mushrooms - I have no idea what this dish was even pretending to be. It was slices of chicken breast swimming in a tomato sauce that was like a watered down ketchup. There was nothing spicy about it. Peking ravioli - It was shaped correctly and had the right consistently but was way smaller than they're supposed to be. I can't eat here. I find the "pretend" Chinese food completely gross. At least "chop suey" places don't actually claim to be Chinese food. Maybe if I stop going to LA, NYC, and Toronto for about 10 years and all my taste buds die off and I no longer know what good Cantonese food is (except I'm a pretty decent cook and can whip up food in a minute that tastes 10 times better than this joint), then I could eat here and not gag. read more

My toilet has a 1.28 gallon per flush feature. It's brand is Kohler. How do I know that? Well for most of the afternoon, we got to spend quite a bit of time together - some bonding time - As I was dry-heaving and throwing up into it after eating at Bernard's. While I'm not 100% convinced that it could be from eating at Bernard's, my wife wasn't feeling so hot either after we had lunch there recently. I'm still in utter shock by that fact, especially since I had been to Bernard's another time prior, many years ago, a visit which had left a memorable impression on me. And it's a shame really because this restaurant went through major renovations as part of the Chestnut Hill Mall revamp in the last few years, bringing new businesses and upgraded design and architecture to the area. They went from being a swanky-like, white tablecloth restaurant to a modern, gorgeous Asian restaurant with lots of dark woods, glass and sleek features. It's stunning inside and very tastefully decorated. I want to love this place, I really do, but my experience spent on the bathroom floor... well... not fun. But despite being in somewhat of a luxurious strip-mall and expensive area, the prices here kind of amazing. Almost Chinatown-esque and thus very affordable for the masses. Most of their appetizers around about $6-$7 and their entrees are $15-$19 for most of the menu. Not bad at all. One my most recent visit here, the wife and I split some pan-seared scallion pancakes ($5.75) which came with 3 dipping sauces and which were very tasty. Not too oily either. Then I had some chicken chow foon ($11.50) and the wife had something off of their specials menu. I washed everything down for 4 glasses of their incredibly tasty, unsweetened ice tea. It could be the best iced tea I've had, or definitely up there. Quite memorable, especially since it was fountain iced tea. Iced tea lovers? Try it out. You'll thank me later. Service was mediocre. We spent the first 20 minutes there waiting for menus, and another 15-20 minutes waiting to place our order despite the fact that the restaurant wasn't full and never having to wait for a table in the first place. So what to think of Bernard's. It's a tricky one. Maybe I should try it again? My stomach is still angry at me though and I do think that I had food poisoning from them but with that said, maybe - and hopefully - this could be a one time thing? I really want to love this place, despite the side effects from my last visit there. Their menu is a crowd-pleaser and is still of American-Chinese classics as well as more a few Japanese dishes. They have it all, from boneless spare ribs ($5.25) to crab rangoon ($5.25), to Japanese Udon ($11.50-$12.50) and fried rice ($7.50). They have Kung Pao chicken ($8.25), General Tso's Chicken ($8.25) and even Peking duck ($37). And many more dishes as well. Who would think a Chinese restaurant located in the Chestnut Hill mall would be so good? Enter Bernard's and some of the tastiest mall Chinese food you'll ever encounter. I've been ordering from here for several years now and each and every time, the food has been pretty darn good. Typical Americanized Chinese grub is saturated with heavy sauces and is often overly sweet. But that's not the case here. The sauces are lighter and the food has a good balance in flavor and seasoning. My personal favorites are the boneless spare ribs and beef with asparagus and mushrooms. Portions are quite generous! So be weary of your appetite when ordering. My only gripe is that Bernard's is easily one of the priciest Chinese restaurants in the area. I could get the same dishes in Chinatown at almost half the prices. I don't know about you, but Chinese food is not and should not be expensive given the ingredients and usual preparation. $21 for shrimp in lobster* sauce? Give me a break. For that price, they ought to throw in actual lobster! *For those who don't know, there is no lobster in lobster sauce. Go figure! read more

After an afternoon of driving around Natick to find a parking space at that god awful "collection", we found ourselves quite famished. We never did find that parking space in Natick and somehow we took a wrong turn and ended up in the very Brahmin area known as Chestnut Hill, MA. One thing was for certain. We needed food. I specifically told my fiance if he knew of any "authentic Chinese restaurants" and he did. We ended up @ the Chestnut Hill Mall -- we found an easy parking space! And went to eat lunch @ Bernard's. Interesting name for a Chinese restaurant, no? The very friendly man who was the host reminded me of the host on the Seinfeld episode -- you know the one. The good thing was, we could sit in ten to fifteen minute! Ten to fifteen minute! Yes!! The food, was a lil on the greasy side for me, I'm not gonna lie. But, the scallion pancake, was delicious. They have decent duck sauce and their pork fried rice was piping hot and tasted pretty good. I'd stick w/ apps and rice if I were you. But, you may like to go another route. The fiance got a wok-fried meat dish that tasted good, kinda hot and peppery. I liked it. They have great service too. The prices were not too crazy -- this is Chestnut Hill after all. Awful. We sent a web order at 5:30 to be ready st 8:15 after our movie next door. During the movie my phone was off and they tried to call us to tell us our order was ready at 5:45 and 6:00. I got there at 8:20 and I told them we said 8:15. The gentleman replied oh I know, we were just trying to tell you it was ready. What?????? The order was not what we ordered and was obviously 3 hours old. They should have gotten it right or not tried to pretend that it WAS alright. This place is not what it's cracked up to be. I was a big fan of the Bernard's in its prior location. I recently had dinner at the restaurant in its new address. I was disappointed, unfortunately. While the interior of the restaurant is nice, clean and upscale contemporary, the food is average and expensive in my opinion. The egg drop soup had little taste and was in a whitish broth, not the typical yellow color. A shrimp dish called a "must try" on the menu was below my expectations. The shrimp were large, good-looking, and tasty, but the rest of the dish was "meh." The server also forgot an item we ordered. Menu prices were high in my opinion for comparable Chinese food elsewhere. I felt like I was paying more for the restaurant's nice interior design and location. read more

Bernards is not your typical Chinese restaurant name. Bernards is not your typical Chinese restaurant. Period. It's definitely American Chinese food, HOWEVER, it's head and shoulders above anything I have EVER had. They have American Chinese food "classics" (i.e. orange chicken type stuff) but it is well executed. The food is not over salted or over greased. The vegetables still have a fresh crisp to them. The protein is actually good cuts of meat. This is quality that is detectable in the final product. I would totally bring my family here, if only they lived in MA. Takeout is well packaged. A cozy and friendly little Chinese joint tucked away on the backside of the Cesnut Hill Mall. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and the service is terrific. Foodwise, I'd say this is essentially an upscalish take on classic American style Chinese food. They serve the standard battery of Chinese menu items you know from your local spots - General Tso's chicken, Beef Chow Fun, Crab Rangoons, Peking Raviloi, all the Lo Meins, etc - and offer some specials that a normal, cheaper place probably wouldn't have, like Thai Style BBQ Ribs. Their versions of these menu classics are elevated by discernibly high quality ingredients and a solidly grease free presentation. The Chow Fun, for example, has really good little cuts of beef mixed with flat rice noodle, sprouts, and onions in the characteristic brown sauce, but the sauce isn't too heavy or gloppy, and the dish isn't drowning in noodles as you'd see in lesser establishments. read more
