I absolutely LOVE Berkeley social club! I've been here 3-4 times and I've always had a great experience. This visit was the first that I had bottomless mimosas! We came on a Sunday afternoon. Luckily we booked a reservation in advance through Yelp (super easy!). Our mimosas were served first, and would be immediately filled! Even when we haven't finished one glass, our server would fill it up quick! It was a fun experience. ($24 per person) As for the food, we ordered four separate dishes. I decided to try something new that I've never had before: garden tofu scramble. It is a vegan option! (I'm not vegan, but I sure do love vegan food and seeing vegan options on menus) I really did enjoy this dish. It had a good balance of different savory flavors. My boyfriend and I walked in with no reservation on a Sunday morning and were able to get seated in just under 7 minutes at the bar. Service was a little slow for us especially when asking for the bill but it was a busy morning and we were seated at the bar so I understand. The place itself is well-decorated and super cozy I absolutely love the vibe in there. There are lots of TVs playing sports. I ordered the BLT Millionaire's which was quite literally the best sandwich I've ever had. I dream about this sandwich. Everything was perfect, down to the runny egg yolk and juicy bacon. It was absolutely perfect and 100% worth it, if this sandwich interests you please order it you will be happy with your choice. My boyfriend got the KFC waffles. He said the waffle was okay and kinda bland, either that or had no flavor or was dry I forget. But he noted that the chicken was good and made up for the waffle. His order came with a spicy syrup which neither of us were big fans of but our waitress happily brought us regular sweet syrup! The fruits that came with his waffle were also all sweet and fresh. I was getting out of a class I had for work in the area and this spot was nearby. I ordered the sparkling lychee delight cocktail, the gooey corn, and the pimped up ramyun. The lychee delight cocktail was refreshing and had a light sweetness to it. The gooey corn had a beautiful cheese pull and came with colorful prawn crackers. The ramyun was well balanced in flavor. I really liked the millionaires bacon on it. It had a sweet savory and a lil crispy. Also the plating was pretty interesting. The service was decent, the staff often came by to refill water. Terrible service Very disappointing experience. I made a reservation through Yelp and received a message saying my table was ready and that I needed to arrive by 11:42 AM, which was only about 8 minutes after I received the message. I arrived at 11:40 AM, two minutes before the deadline, but the hostess had already canceled my table. She told me they had called my name and that I "didn't listen," even though I was following the exact timing I was given. She was also rude and dismissive and refused to seat us. If customers are given a specific time to arrive by, the restaurant should honor it. Bad for Korean food, in my opinion and it's pretty pricey. I got the dolsot, which is essentially a bibimbap in a hot stone bowl. The flavors were all wrong. The bibimbap sauce, which typically consists of a gochujang blend, tasted odd. Very sweet overall, and not a ton of rice - which is arguably my favorite part as you can get the rice crispy. $23 + $6 for bulgogi. Bulgogi was standard. $29 for not a big portion of bibimbap that also isn't very tasty/authentic is just disappointing. I also got the fresh orange juice $6, which tasted good. However, it didn't taste fresh per se as it was kind of thick and seemed like it was mixed with another fruit taste-wise. I had no issues with the ambiance or the service. Service was friendly and consistent. The food just wasn't there for me. They seem to be popular for brunch, though, so maybe that's better as it's advertised as Asian fusion. I learned my lesson and came on a weekday this time to avoid the huge weekend brunch crowds. Good decision because I was sat right away. I wanted to bring my friend here because I loved the open space and felt it was the perfect environment to catch up over coffee and brunch. Anywho, let's get into the food: Vanilla Latte - 4/5 I enjoyed this! Not too sweet nor too milky. Though I'd typically go for an ube latte if its on the menu, I went with the classic vanilla this time around because I remembered the Ube latte to be chalky the last time I came here. French toast - 3/5 for overall taste and quality. Presentation was very nice, and the berries and mascarpone added a nice tartness and creaminess to contrast the crunchy texture of the toast. The crunchiness of the toast was a bit much for me and my friend, we had a hard time eating this one. Bulgogi Scramble - 3/5. It was a good dish, we finished it all! Very happy with the aesthetic, the tornado egg was perfect! Taste wise, it was not particularly extraordinary, but we did enjoy it enough to clean the plate. To make this a 5/5 experience, I would have liked the food to be mouthwateringly good. That's probably asking for a lot, but I believe it's possible! The person who sat us just silently put our menus down at our table, didn't even say "follow me," then came back and sat "your table is ready" and just left. We were baffled like "where??" Hahaha. Another instance when we asked for bags for leftovers from another waiter, he waved the bags in my friend's face saying "hello hellooo." Since we were a party of 6, gratuity of 20% was automatically applied. One of us felt it was a bit unfair for us to have to tip 20% when service was subpar. He politely asked if there was anything the restaurant could do for us, possibly take off the automatic gratuity and we can leave a lower tip. They came back with an offer of 2% off. I had been meaning to try this spot for quite some time, but I kept showing up when they were closed between their brunch and dinner hours. You'd think I would've figured that out, but I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. I finally came in the early evening during the middle of the week. I had heard the breakfast plates were pretty good, but they aren't all-day plates. So Korean food it was going to be for me, and I had no problem with that. It's quite a cavernous space, and I just remember how long it took me to go to the restroom. I imagine it could get pretty loud during weekend revelries, but it was as still as a tomb except for the occasional takeout customer yammering on their phone. There were many tempting choices on the menu, but I settled on the $19 Belly Pot, which consisted of overnight braised pork belly festooned with scallions, red onions, and nori strips over rice. Portions were not an issue here unless excess represents a problem for you. The Belly Pot was aptly named because my belly expanded just looking at it. Served in a deep frying pan instead of a clay pot as described, it was a lotta pork belly ladled with a lotta sweet-savory sauce (Photo 10). Since I wasn't training for a triathlon, it was a bit heavy on the rice for my taste. I ended up taking a lot of it home. No harm, no foul as the staff was friendly and responsive here. They have a ton of unique breakfast & lunch options that I haven't seen elsewhere! Specifically, a lot of Korean inspired options (both sweet & savory). I went with the Supreme Jook which was so good! It was highly recommended by a friend and it didn't disappoint. It was a huge portion & super filling. I love to try new places when I'm on my once a year vacation, and this place had me stuck in between bed and the restroom for all of it. I am disappointed to write this review because I selected this location for breakfast based off all the great things I've heard about it. I will not be returning. Edit After Business Response: I manage a full service restaurant as a general manager, and have done so for about 15 years now. I'm well aware of the standard generated responses by an operator/manager when it comes to negative feedback. I am also aware of how foodborne illnesses work since I have taken (and continuously needing to recertify) the certification required for operators and managers. It would be great that in the future, you provide a point of contact instead of a "we take your feedback very seriously" type of response, especially when you are not going to provide a way to message you. Recently hosted some clients for a lunch at the Berkeley Social club. We found the restaurant to be very welcoming, quaint and casual. This made it easy to have lunch with a group where we could the our time to connect. Everyone at the table commented on how unique the menu items were. As everyone's dishes arrived to the table we were pleasantly surprised with how large the portions were and the flavors were amazing. I don't know how I haven't left a review for this place yet, I've been here so many times! I was shown this place by someone who went to Berkeley for undergrad and who spoke highly of this place once they learned I love brunch. My go to dish to get here is the Lemon Ricotta pancakes. I get it every single time without fail because it's such a wonderful combination: fluffy pancake, creamy flavor from the ricotta, and subtle but not too subtle hints of lemon. I've tried making this at home and it's just not the same. Every mouthful is *close your eyes to savor and do a little happy dance* level of good. I've tried various other dishes: the benedicts (salmon, Korean fried chicken, and black stone), bulgogi scramble, the millionaires bacon, etc, and everything I have tried has been really good. I love how it is a fusion of Korean and American food for the dishes. I don't drink alcohol so I don't have anything to say about any of the alcoholic drinks, but I have gotten their dirty ube latte and thought it was a bit in there sweeter side but good nonetheless. The waiters are always super nice and very helpful if you have questions. Service is usually pretty quick! If you come at peak hours there is a bit of a wait. Chicken and Waffles 10/10- the fried chicken here is so good! Normally I'm not a fan of chicken and waffles as a combination, but this was truly incredible. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside but so juicy and tender inside. The seasoning was amazing and the waffle was fluffy with the perfect texture. The way they paired together was actually perfect - the sweetness of the waffle complemented the savory chicken so well. This completely changed my mind about chicken and waffles. Beef Bulgogi Scramble 8.87/10- made with marinated ribeye, carrots, spinach, red onion, cherry pepper, and scallion. This was such a unique twist on a breakfast scramble! The marinated ribeye was so tender and flavorful - you could taste how well-seasoned it was. The vegetables added great texture and freshness, and I loved how the cherry peppers gave it a little kick. The scallions added this perfect finishing touch. Everything was cooked perfectly and the flavors worked so well together. KFC Benedict 10/10- I love eggs Benedict and I love how they made a twist on it by making it with Korean fried chicken! This was so good and so creative. The Korean fried chicken was crispy and had amazing flavor, and I loved how they incorporated scallions and Gochujang hollandaise sauce - it's so unique and delicious. The Gochujang hollandaise was the perfect balance of creamy and spicy. The eggs were poached perfectly with that runny yolk. This is definitely one of the most creative benedicts I've ever had. Lemon Ricotta Pancakes 9.68/10- these were the perfect sweet treat to balance out all the savory food! They were so light and fluffy but packed with amazing flavor. The lemon was bright and fresh, and the ricotta made them incredibly moist and creamy. They weren't too heavy which was perfect after all the other rich dishes. The perfect ending to an amazing meal. Bottomless Mimosas 10/10- the bottomless mimosas were great! They definitely had all of us completely exhausted from them but they were so fun. You get 90 minutes which is plenty of time, and you get the option of having them with orange juice, fresh raspberry lemonade, or grapefruit juice. My personal favorite was definitely the raspberry lemonade - it was so refreshing and had the perfect balance of sweet and tart. Berkeley Social Club is honestly one of my favorite places in Berkeley (yes, I'm basic) but it's such a fun spot and their food is so good! I love how their food is pretty unique with creative twists on classic dishes, and it's such a fun vibe to hang out with friends. It took me like twenty or more minutes for parking but not the restaurant's fault lol I got the buddha bless you cocktail - sweet and I wish it was stronger but good if you love sweet cocktail. An Absolute Gem in Berkeley! Berkeley Social Club has easily become one of my favorite brunch spots in the Bay Area. Every dish we ordered was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. The Crab Benedict was outstanding--loaded with fresh, flavorful crab meat that paired perfectly with the rich hollandaise sauce. The Tornado Bulgogi Omurice was a showstopper. The perfectly spun scrambled egg was cooked to perfection, and the savory bulgogi complemented it beautifully. It's as impressive to look at as it is to eat. The Waldorf Wasabi Chicken Salad was another surprise favorite. The wasabi dressing was hands down one of the best I've ever had--creamy, balanced, and packed with flavor without being overpowering. Don't skip the Millionaire Bacon! It literally melts in your mouth and has the perfect balance of sweet, smoky, and savory. Their freshly squeezed orange juice was probably the best I've ever had--bright, refreshing, and tasting like it was made from oranges picked that morning. To top it all off, the Ube Latte was absolutely stunning. Its vibrant purple color catches your eye, but it's the smooth, velvety texture and subtle, earthy sweetness that make it unforgettable. It's almost too pretty to drink! What made the experience even more special was the exceptional service from Ammie Yang. She was incredibly warm, welcoming, attentive, and made us feel genuinely appreciated as guests. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that she's also the General Manager. It's refreshing to see someone in leadership so actively involved in creating such a positive dining experience. From the outstanding food to the incredible hospitality, Berkeley Social Club exceeded every expectation. I can't wait to come back and try more of the menu. I had tickets for the Berkeley Rep at 8pm, so we decided to try BSC, since it's so close and has good reviews. We weren't disappointed by the food or the service. The people were super nice, the cocktails were good and the food was yummy. The place was super cold, though, and I had my winter jacket on throughout the meal (and I wasn't the only one). So, if it's cold outside, don't leave your coat in the car -- you'll need it! (The warm toddy was a godsend!) Regarding the food, we shared the BSC buns with bulgogi as a starter and each had the dolsot as a main course - one with tofu and one with spicy pork. The portions were enormous! I actually had half of my main course for lunch the next day. The food came out very slowly, so towards the end of the meal I got a bit nervous that we might not make it in time for our show. I had a blast with a group of friends here a few months ago. It's a fun spot that's located right by Berkeley campus. This is that typical fun college drinking spot and I had a blast. You can't go wrong with any of the KBBQ options and don't forget to order Soju. What is keeping me from giving this spot a 5 star, is I have had better Korean food for a cheaper price. That being said, this spot still has great vibes. I'll be back for sure the next time I am in the Berkeley area. read more
