Absolutely amazing customer service. We had a light fixture which needed repair. The fixture was purchased more than seven years ago from Hubbardton Ford. We contacted Hubbardton who immediately sent us the replacement part free of charge. We then contacted Berkeley Lighting to see if they could install the replacement part. They did so, also without any charge, within an hour. Simply as good as it gets. I cannot imagine partronizing any other lighting store in the East Bay other than Berkeley Lighting (and a very special thanks to Chiem at Berkeley Lighting for his splendid repair work). read more

I was just at Berkeley Lighting Co. for the first time. I have been up and down both sides of the bay trying to find someone who didn't just want to sell me something. I moved from Menlo Park, and have been trying to find fans and lights for a loft in Fruitvale, and had a good idea of what I was after. Today, i went into Berkeley Lighting and spoke with Dan. I finally met someone who said, "Not a good idea. Here's why,..." made suggestions, dug out a ton of books, and installation photos, and I left with a much better understanding of my next steps - without buying the fans. I have more measuring to do, and need an electrician (he referred me to one for a quote), but he saw where I was trying to go, and is helping me get there. I bought a beautiful adjustable height lamp for over our kitchen table, which, when I opened the box at home, had the suspension wires twisted in such a way the it was too difficult for the contractor to hang. I returned to the store and was given the demo lamp hanging over the counter, which I had home and installed within the hour. Service was super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. This store is great. They let me take three loaners to see which fixture would work best in my apartment. I was only asked basic questions in order to take these with me (no credit card). One of the fixtures worked for me and so I will be returning next week to return the ones that I'm not keeping and pay for the fixture that I decided upon. This is without question the local go to store for your "serious" lighting needs. I am talking about the LED vs fluorescent for the kitchen lighting type needs. Don't get me wrong they also have a very nice selection of decorative sconces, fixtures and overhead fans, but where Fara, the owner really rocks, (at least as far as I am concerned), is with his knowledge about lighting. He really took the time to explain differences and demonstrate them as best you can in a store setting. He also knows the permit requirements for the local cities. This means, he won't sell you what you won't be allowed to install if you are doing a remodel with permits. A huge time and hassle saver worth the weight in gold. The prices here are not much different than you will find at a Home Depot. So, given that lighting stores of this kind seem to be a dying breed (this may well be the last locally owned lighting store, in the area), may as well give them the business. read more

Walked in with an expensive ceiling fixture that hasn't worked properly for 5 of the 10 years I've owned it. Three guys at the desk immediately all started helping me. They knew the fixture, knew that the sockets were defective and that the manufacturer had been willing to replace them. One guy called them to ask if the manufacture would still send out free replacement parts, 10 years after it was purchased. Another guy quickly determined the bad sockets and the other wrote me up. Two days later they called me that it was ready and charged me a very minimal fee for their labor. And it works! This kind of service and knowledge of the field is hard to find. read more

You know, I wish I could afford to constantly shop at Metro Lighting but I cant. So instead I got to Berkeley Lighting which is a GREAT lighting shop. They have a large selection of all kinds of lighting from various manufacturers. The staff is very helpful and they have a great return policy. They will also customize your lights with pull switches and the like and of course have bulbs and repair services. Go here! No home despot! read more

I'm shocked to see so many five star reviews for this place...I've never received such poor service in any other establishment of any kind. I've been in there about 6 times (stopping in due to proximity and relative rarity of this type of business) both on a professional basis and personal basis, as a landscape architect and a homeowner. On almost every occasion I've been completely ignored by the staff--no one has greeted me upon entering the store, nor approached me and asked if I needed help, nor even really looked up when I approached the counter...I've had to go out of my way to ask a question, and the help is stingy and uninformative. They could care less about my professional status, which normally is not the case, as most businesses that sell products that would typically be specified by a design professional will seek to cultivate a good working relationship with a designer. Additionally, when I went in there as a homeowner looking for a new dining room fixture, ready to spend some serious money, they went to no effort at all to inquire as to what I was looking for, point me in the right direction in their catalogues, help me hone in on a nice fixture appropriate for the architecture of my home, etc. The inventory is blah, nothing special, and ultimately I found what I was looking for from Renovation on 4th St. (Somewhat unfortunately, I'd already put in the order when I found something even nicer and made LOCALLY from Metro Lighting, also in Berkeley, for the same price point). I'm happy with my Renovation fixture, it's lovely, but I try to support local artisans and businesses especially. Metro Lighting is awesome, highly recommend it, and for GREAT customer service and for familiarizing you with what else might be available, try Danville Light Source. For landscape fixtures, try The Urban Farmer Store in Richmond. I will never go in to this establishment again and I'd say it was their loss, but they've been there for years and seem to be doing ok--who knows why. read more

I've been dealing with Berkeley lighting for years. We remodeled our home in 1995 and bought most of our new lighting fixtures from them. They discount their prices from list and have only high quality merchandise - no cheesy stuff you have to wander through to get to fixtures that you'd actually consider owning. They carry many European imports from Germany, Spain and Italy, as well as domestically made products. The service has always been extremely helpful. They are happy to let you try out a fixture at home and, if you don't like it, they refund your money without question. Berkeley Lighting is the first place I turn to when I need help with lighting, including the repair of lamps and fixtures. read more

Their selection is the best I've ever seen. I ordered 3 lighting fixtures from them for a house I inherited and am fixing up for sale (none were in stock other than the floor samples), and picked them up a few days ago. I called an electrician who happened to be available right then, and met him at the house an hour later. When we opened the boxes, I saw that one of the fixtures was completely different from the one I ordered. I called Berkeley Lighting and spoke with the owner, telling him that I had a contractor onsite ready to install (I was in a panic, as I was a good hour and a half away round-trip, and electricians aren't cheap. The owner said they were very busy and could not guarantee when he could send someone over, but said he would do the best he could. Within an hour - and before the other two fixtures were installed - one of his employees showed up with the correct fixture (the floor sample). All I can say is, wow. They have my business forever. I'd also like to note that I bought several of their fixtures for a home I sold in Alameda in 2005, and got a lot of compliments on them. Saved the day!!! We were about to give up on our 11 year old pendent kitchen light fixture. But Berkeley Lighting Company diagnosed the problem over the counter, replaced the broken part, tested it before we walked out the door, and included a warranty to cover their work. What service, and friendly, too. We were also impressed with the wide selection of light fixtures if we needed to replace the unit, but the cost of the fix was a fraction of a new light. Berkeley Lighting has a large selection of Lighting for all locations and a great staff but what puts them into another category is their care and support they offer to solve any lighting or design problem. They really make great efforts to help you solve the issue even it is beyond the services they can usually provide. (they will refer you to the proper source) So not only do they sell their products at a reasonable price (There prices are sometimes lower than the online price) they try to provide you all the support in making your project a success. They also make sure you are using the fixture in the right location and provide the correct bulbs for each fixture! Trying to buy a lighting fixture online is nothing like seeing the fixture in person and being able to judge it's size and light output in person. I am quite thankful we have a Professional Lighting Expert right here in Berkeley 7 days a week! . They are very generous with their time and service which you don't see in retail anymore... One more important thing ..They are completely honest about exactly how long a fixture will take to arrive. I have had many other instances where a promise of a fixture arriving even from an online source that didn't arrive when promised. We need to support our local businesses and keep them open! Totally competent, pleasant and accommodating. Four years ago I bought a set of six LED track lighting fixtures. These were and are pricey things. A month ago, two of them died. They are supposed to last 30 yrs! The warrantee, though, was only 1 year. I stopped by the store, hoping they could be fixed. No. The owner, Sean, however, was kind enough to contact the manufacturer and convinced them to replace the fixtures for free, if they wished to continue selling through his store. I just got the fixtures (a week later) and installed them. And there was light! Three cheers for Sean and Berkeley Lighting! They are worth every penny. read more

I have bought items from this store before and was happy with the service I received, but on a recent visit it was a different experience. I bought an attachment to connect a lamp to a track light which cost $18 which I thought was a lot but bought it any ways. I connected it to my light and tried to install it in the track but it would not work, I looked at it an it appeared to be bent. I would normalley fix it myself but after paying so I deceided to take it back and let them fix it or replace it. The lady that was helping me told me I installed it wrong and bent it, they tested it with a light and when they hocked it up the light pop and blew up. They work on it for some time and finally got it to work and gave it back to me. After I returned home I installed it on my lamp but still had problems getting it to go in the track after I worked on I was able to it to plug in.I was not happy with the recent visit and will think twice before going back to there store in the furture. read more

Owner Fara Pakzad saved me $206. When the halogen light bulb burned out in the beautiful sconce light we bought from him at Berkeley Lighting Co. several years ago, the spring-loaded bracket holding the halogen light oxidized and would not move enough to release the spent light without breaking it, which I did. For the same reason, the new halogen bulb would not fit into the bracket. I called my trusty but busy electrician, and he said I needed to buy an entirely new fixture, the whole thing, glass globe, bracket, mounting box, etc. which would cost $131 at Berkeley Lighting Co., and I would then have to pay the electrician $75 to install for a total cost of $206, plus tax. So, when I went in to Berkeley Lighting Co. to see Farad about the problem, he gave me two better solutions, even though he could have sold me an exact duplicate of our light fixture for $131: 1. Bring in the entire fixture and his technician would replace the defective bulb-holding bracket for $35 for the part and $10 for the labor, or 2. Fix it myself by using a pair of pliers to bend back one side of the bulb-holding bracket just enough to insert the new halogen bulb, and then release it. I chose Fara's second solution and Voila! Problem solved. Thus, because of Farad's selfless and competent service information long after the sale, I recognize him as an exemplary businessman and recommend his products and service to others. By the way, Fara's product prices are quite reasonable and the real value added to your purchase through his professionalism and expertise is something you will never find at the big box stores or online.
