We had been talking via email about the vehicle and I must admit their pricing and customer service was above the other dealer's prices in the area. I visited the weekend and test drove the vehicle, look at other ones and saw the white one. I liked it the most. I didn't have to haggle on the price because I knew it was low and a great price compared to the other local dealers. When I came back mid-week to pick up the vehicle Brent showed me all of the buttons, set-up the blue-tooth radio and even had the car filled up with gas. I've been quietly looking for a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. I did my due diligence: researched reviews (both from owners and consumer reports), checked into financing, got a the KBB for my trade-in, and just have been waiting until the right car surfaced. I found the car yesterday. And I bought it today from Berkeley Honda Auto Center. It's a 2009 with low miles, the "sunset" paint job I was looking for, and at a fair price. JR, the Used Car Manager was very helpful. He cruised about a bit (I've already been on several test drives), showed me the CarFax history of the car, sat down with a "no haggle price" and we negotiated my trade-in. JR included a 5 years or 85K bumper-to-bumper warranty for $18 bucks a month! The finance guy, John Gonzales, was great and very professional. In fact, instead of "surprising" me with a higher financing numbers, John actually lowered the loan's interest rate by checking financing promotions. Get a LoJack, save 3%, and lower my payments. Sweet! All this took about 45 minutes. No waiting around, going back and forth with some other "sales manager." The General Manager did come out to see me to personally thank me for buying to car. They lost only one star, because they only had one key and didn't detail my new whip on pick up. But to be fair, I didn't ask or insist on a detailing, since I had to pick up my kid from school. I'm going back next week for the LoJack install and plan to ask for the detailing then. The key? Over to Reed Bros Security tomorrow to get a spare. On the most beautiful November Day, I picked up Johnny at school. He gave me the biggest "sh*t eating" grin. I've had so many experiences here. Some good. Some bad. Starting off 2019. When I first came to look at a car, I was treated pretty well. The guy was definitely trying to sell the car. I really liked the car and I requested a test drive. The moment he saw my age on my drivers license, he became condescending. He was never explicitly rude but we felt extremely unwelcome. Why I still bought the car? I have no idea. I had really good experiences with the service department. Eddie and Amanda always made me feel welcome. I've had so many issues in the past couple years (user errors) and they always helped me out the best they could. Unfortunately, I brought it in recently and they weren't able to fix my problem. They didn't charge me because they couldn't fix it. I was led on that were uncomfortable touching anything because of my after market parts but after I got my car back, it was obvious they tried; to the point something broke. I don't mind that they weren't comfortable fixing it, or that they weren't able to. I'm uncomfortable that something broke and they didn't disclose it, and I had to find out on my own. Luckily, they fixed it at no charge and Eddie was really helpful in getting that going but I don't think I'll forget this. read more

Probably the best experience I've had getting my car fixed up! I brought my car in with an appointment and they had everything fixed up a couple hours later. The issue was related to an emissions problem, but they had no everything up and running very quickly. Just got off the phone with one of the most rude car dealers I have EVER spoken to. Stephen mansplained and talked over me the entire time about why he refused to give me a price over the phone, which was his right and as I am trying to hang up he tells me how he doesn't want to bother Tim, the owner about me trying to get a estimated price on a Honda Accord. IM SO SORRY to potentially both YOU or your OWNER and he goes on to compare buying a car to something more relevant to me, SUCH AS BUYING SHOES. He gets irritated with me as I continue as ask the same price and at one point he says "now this will be the second time telling you this again". Oh WOW. We had our inherited, very old Honda serviced repaired here today and are very happy. I was reluctant to take the car to a dealership for service (based on some interesting experiences in the past with other dealers) but it developed a serious issue and there was a recall on it, so we took it to Berkeley Honda. They are terrific. Customer service, both over the phone and onsite, was terrific. Eddie was friendly, helpful and totally transparent. I hope they give him a raise. The pricing seemed fair, and the entire transaction was transparent. We will use them again, and I would recommend them to anyone. They far exceeded our expectations. (Gotta admit, our expectations weren't overly high.) I think it's unfortunate that Yelp combines sales and service reviews....not really fair. read more

Deceptive estimates from Eddie on a windshield Honda didn't even install. I was quoted about $1150 for parts and labor. Go to get the job done only to learn that the labor is $250 from a subcontractor Honda brings in to do windshields AND $399 for windshield calibration - apparently some sensors need to be reset. Both of those fees are fixed fees and should have been included in the original quote. Very poor customer service. Don't trust quotes they give you. read more

I came to buy a used car with my Costco membership, but from the very beginning to end I have faced with aggression and unprofessional attitude from Thomas K.. Just to add to that, he lied about a non-pre-certified car for being Costco eligible just to get a sale. I called Costco Auto custmer service to check if I'm doing the process correctly, because it felt fishy when talking to Thomas. The Costco agent checked and said it's not a Costco membership discount because it only applies to pre-certified cars or new cars. When I first came in, I have two dealers in mind to talk to, so I asked for Thomas first. When he came out, he complained in three separate occasions on that same day about how I didn't make an appointment before coming here because they're very short-staffed. If that's the case, I can always come back? One of the first things he asked was, "Who here speak English?" Apparently, we all just spoke English and comprehend it when we shook hands, but not sure why he still has to audacity to ask us anyways... Most of the aggression was from text. There was a miscommunication from my end when I thought I already asked him whether the price we discussed was included with tax. While I was thinking about that question, I was in a car discussing multiple topics with several people, so instead of asking about tax, I asked if the given price was included with the Costco discount (silly me). Then the time when we discuss the approximate cost, I was surprised by why there was an additional tax when the given price already included tax. It was a simple innocent question, "I remember you mentioned that the $xxxx already included with tax?" Then I get a long reply about him being "very disappointing" in me for "twisting words and prices." No need to get rude? In the end we didn't get the car because it was already gone a week before our final appointment. They made me and my elderly relative wait for HOURS. No coffee or anything being offered to us while we were waiting. When Thomas finally came up, he said the car was already gone... like a WEEK AGO. Why drag us out when the car was already gone and stated the car was still there the day before our appointment? Lying much? Then he blamed us for not putting in deposit. DO NOT EVER BRING YOUR CAR HERE! THIS PLACE IS AN ABSOLUTE SCAM. I took my car here for a routine maintenance check. I am a young woman, and I think they assumed I didn't know about cars. They charged me nearly $200 for the maintenance check, and then told me that my car needed OVER FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS of repair work. (I drive a Honda Civic, less than 10 years old and I've gotten the car maintenances regularly). They told me that I should SELL the car and buy a new one, OR get the work done! I had a bad feeling, felt I was being scammed. I took my car to another mechanic -- there was a TINY issue with a seal on the transmission and he fixed it for $200. He told me that everything they had said was wrong was an absolute lie, and the prices they had given were absolutely OUTRAGEOUS. I went here intending to purchase a used car (plug-in Prius). I'd spoken to Gio on the phone, and made an appointment to see him. When I arrived at the dealership, two other people approached me and welcomed me, and they each had to page/call Gio in order to get him to come to the office (at the time I'd scheduled to meet him). It was a hot, sunny day, and I was surprised to not be offered water, or a seat while I waited or anything. Gio sent me out on a test drive on my own. I noticed that the brakes made odd sounds, and that the battery wasn't charged. I asked about both of these, and was told "the battery isn't charged because we don't charge the batteries". Um, okay, but how am I supposed to check out EV mode if you don't charge the battery? How would I know if the battery can hold a charge? I was also told that the weird sound in the brakes was because it was a hybrid. Note: I have owned a Prius for 12.5 years-- this isn't how the brakes are supposed to sound. Walked away. Every time I have been here it's been a circus. We called and asked to have two keys made. We asked if we needed to order the keys and we were told no, the service advisor would "take care of it". I showed up for our appointment: no keys. They asked if we called the parts department to order the keys. No, they told us they'd take care of it. While I was there, a woman with Idaho plates named, I kid you not, "Karen", waltzes in umasked. There are six signs saying masks required. She's just having a jolly old time chatting them up unmasked. The guy asks me to come in the back with him and I say absolutely not while she's unmasked in a closed space. They make a weak attempt t offer Karen a mask and she refuses, so they just shrug and I have to do my paperwork standing in the driveway. Berkeley Honda apparently just prefers to defer to Karens instead of protecting their other customers during a global health emergency. This place is dreadful. My friend bought his Honda from this dealership through Costco's car buying service, so I thought I'd check them out. I went in to test drive a new Accord (nice car but with a horrendous sound system). A young salesperson greeted me. He was friendly and helpful. He asked another salesperson (an older, quite heavy white man) if he could assist me with a test drive. He barely looked up and saw me, and then rudely muttered that he was too busy, claiming that he had another customer coming. What a jerk. There a ton of Honda dealers in the Bay Area, so I left. As for the new facility, it is terrible. The showroom is tiny and holds only two cars. All of the dealership's inventory is located two blocks away, with cars crammed in a tiny outdoor lot. It's hardly what I'd call a nice dealership. CONCLUSION: Don't waste your time with this place. The people at El Cerrito Honda were much nicer and more professional. read more

SALES REVIEW - just bought a 2019 Ridgeline from this dealership. I initially was going to buy a CRV and went to San Leandro. The sales team there was terrible. It was like swimming with sharks without a cage. So I decided to look at other Honda dealers. I noticed a preowned Ridgeline on Berkeley website and contacted Brent. We met him to test drive but decided we didnt like the Black Edition. I highly recommend Eddie for his excellent customer service. I scheduled an oil change and he explained the options for additional recommended maintenance. He wasn't pushy when I declined. (I've had the experience at other places of being talked into paying for service not needed). After the oil change, he thoroughly explained the inspection checklist and answered my questions. I declined having a tire repaired at Berkeley Honda because I had a warranty with Costco Tire Center. Eddie took the time to highlight with a marker on the invoice where the leak was mentioned so that I could show Costco exactly what the problem was. THE SHADIEST PLACE EVER!!!! DO NOT GO, SCAMMERS!!!! I went to this location to get my car looked at, as it was the nearest to my house. They called and said I need to get my brake fluid done and that it was urgent and it would be an additional $200. However! I got my brakes replaced and fluid checked at another Honda location 3 weeks ago. I said "that's weird because I have the check list and they said they checked it and it was perfectly fine." The guy then stumbled across his words and didn't know what to say. I then called the other Honda location and they assured me they checked the brake fluid and everything was fine. They even offered for me to go back and they would relook at it for free for peace of mind. I did go back and turns out it was perfectly fine. This place will scam you!!! This review is specifically for the service auto center. I have to say that this was the worst Honda Service Center I have ever experienced. So I'm not very good with cars, I rely on mechanics and other specialist to tell me what kind of maintenance and services I'll need for my car. Which is why I bring my Honda Civic into an Honda service center instead of JiffyLube or those other cheaper car places. This place might as well been a JiffyLube. Because all they asked me is what I needed for my car. I told them I needed a oil change and to check out a strange sound that comes from my car when I turn. And usually at other Honda service centers, they'll come out and check my car and look at all the codes on my dash before sending it off to the mechanics. Nope. Not this place. They just took my car in and did what I told them too. Which would be nice if I knew exactly what my car needed. But I don't. When I came back to pick it up. The guy just asked for my credit card and that's it. He didn't try explaining anything on the mechanic's report to me. It was clear that all he wanted to do was get me in and out as soon as possible. And when I asked him if they ever checked the weird sound coming from my car, he said "yeah it's just going to sound like that". Ugh. Really?!?! NOT COMING BACK HERE EVER!! I'm going to stick to my San Leandro Honda Service Center, even though I live in Berkeley I am willing to drive the distance for better customer service and maintenance of my car. My car had a broken AC - my service advisor (Eddie) proactively brought up a known condenser issue with some recent Hondas and mentioned that if that was the fix, it would be covered for free. Don't trust this business. Even when caught in a lie they keep it up. I looked at and test drove a used Toyota Prius offered by these guys at the essentially the same price as every other dealer and private seller for that year and milage - i.e., the Kelly Blue Book price. Although it had 900 more miles on it than advertised and no warranty was available, it looked clean and drove fine, so I asked to arrange to take it to my mechanic for a pre-purchase check-up. My mechanic found clear evidence of front and rear end collisions that had not shown on the CarFax report. Along with identifying nearly $800 of required maintenance, he suggested the car could easily have other yet unseen problems on the horizon. He suggested a much lower price would be fair if I still liked the car. I returned to the dealership and asked them if they inspect the cars before putting them up for sale. I was assured that they were thoroughly inspected by their service department before hitting the lot. So, either it was inspected and they'd found the obvious evidence but decided not to tell me, or it was not in fact ever inspected at all. When I took the salesmen to the car and showed them the evidence, they at first refused to admit anything was wrong. They wanted to look at other Priuses to see whether they "all look like that." (Perhaps bent front ends are a new feature?) Even after going through that charade and having to admit that my mechanic was right - with the unmentioned implication that they had been deceitful - they refused to budge from their advertised "final price." Fine. I'd prefer to give my money to someone with more integrity. I just hope the next potential buyer is as careful as I was. read more

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Berkeley Honda Service Department is better than El Cerrito Honda. As in, way better. At the Service Department at Berkeley Honda -- my experience with Eddie Z. was great. He is very professional and I would happily go there again. If you need a good independent shop for a bunch of Japanese makes -- both Art's Automotive and Steve's Auto Care are honest shops that will treat you right. *********************************************************************************** THE LONG STORY: I inherited a pristine Civic 2016 from my Mom with only 5k miles on it. My family had a '92 Civic in the East Bay years ago and during that time, and with subsequent cars, we have used both Art's Automotive in Berkeley and Steve's Auto Care in El Cerrito. One cannot say enough good thing about either of those two independent shops. In short, both competent and honest. But I ramble . . . So, most recently with this new set of wheels I gave Steve's a jingle, but alas they don't yet work with the newish type of Air Conditioning refrigerant that this model uses. So, in a weak moment, I must have thought -- "hey, don't always buy that hype that dealerships torque you in the service departments" -- so I brought it to El Cerrito Honda. Oops. EC Honda needed to order a part for the repair that they said I needed (which BTW should have been covered under either the original warranty, or a fresh service bulletin). But . . . they neglected to share that intel with me and ginned up a baloney reason why I just needed to pay for the repair. Luckily it was taking forever and a day for the part to come in. So, while I was still in a good mood, I called EC Honda to see what my options were. That is -- if it was going to take months for the OEM part to come in -- I would see what I could do with an aftermarket part at an independent shop. Well, in this conversation -- the Service Advisor just went off on me. Super weird. So... with that experience I called up the nice folks at Art's Automotive. They took a look at the care -- and just charged me for the diagnosis time. And, instead of hosing me -- they let me know about a Honda Service Bulletin that might apply. Next chapter.... so I took that care it to Berkeley Honda. Well what do you know? They have a nice new shop. The Service Advisors there (mine was Eddie Z.) are all very nice. They of course had to do their own fresh diagnosis. And guess what? They just honestly saw the problem, were able to access the manufacturer's warranty and life is good. read more
