UPDATE 8/27/19: I went today for breakfast; I'd been there two times before and it was amazing...today, not so much. I ordered the chicken & waffles. It was as lame as a breakfast could be. A flavorless waffle with two chicken strips and a maple flavored high-fructose corn syrup showed up. When I mentioned it to the server his response was "oh". Not a single thing about how to make things better. The only upside was that I didn't finish the dish, saving me from consuming calories I don't need.
To the owners: train your service staff to solve problems. A response of "oh" isn't how you keep people coming to your place. I'm removing a star from my original review.
---------------
So far, this is the best breakfast place I've visited since I've been in Cortez.
I have lofty expectations when it comes to food. It's really not that hard to put out good food (I used to be a professional cook). It really isn't, but somehow amazingly bad food gets decent reviews. I keep wondering if everyone putting out these 5-star reviews of crappy places spends most of their time at a Golden Corral.
Anyway, I asked a few locals about this place and they all said it was amazing. So, I decided to visit.
Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. This little diner is very unassuming, however, when you walk in you'll immediately notice that the place is clean. Good sign.
The place was packed - another good sign.
I was taken to the back of the dining area by my server, Golden. I got my coffee and placed my order. My food was there in less than 10 minutes. I ordered the huevos al caballo...basically it was two eggs on top of two enchiladas, served with refried beans and hash browns. I ordered my enchiladas served "Christmas" style (both red and green sauce). I also ordered the biscuits and gravy (one of the ways I judge a breakfast place).
The ONLY bummer of the entire meal was that they use the typical powdered white gravy, like every other casual breakfast place does. I wanted to deduct a half star as a result, but I didn't for two reasons: 1) you can't give half stars in Yelp; 2) every single breakfast place I've ever been to (other than high-end places) serves that same, insipid gravy. The biscuits were good though.
The rest of the meal was incredible. The hash browns were cooked perfectly with the right amount of crunch and potato-creaminess. The dish was seasoned appropriately, and the eggs were a perfect over-easy.
The only thing better than the food was the service. Golden was the perfect combination of attentiveness and letting me eat in peace.
Anyway, I'll definitely go back. It'll be a while though because I'm going to be full for a few days. read more
