I have been going to Bennys since it was across from the old Sears off the Seward Highway in the 70's... oh my time flies!! The food here is consistent and I have never had a bad meal. Although I am a creature of habit I tend to always get their bean and cheese burritos and some extra hot sauce. The prices are super reasonable that a person afford to eat often. The service is incredibly, you can drive up and they will come out and assist you right away. Happened upon this spot during lunch and was craving tacos anyway. I ordered the beef tacos with rice and beans. Unfortunately what I received missed the mark. The taco meat was bland and watered down. Their wasn't really any vegs on them and what was there wasn't very fresh tasting. The beans and rice didn't have much taste or flavor either. My friend got the carne asada tacos, the meat was very tough and lacked flavor as well. He chose not to finish his order or tacos. The little bus they operate out of seemed dirty and not very appetizing. All in all not a good meal and not some place I'd return to. read more

My husband and I love this place. It's been around as far as I can remember. I used to go there on my lunch at West High years ago. He used to go years before we met. The folks are friendly here - greeting was pleasant. I ordered a Carne Asada Burrito and with no rice. After a bit of a wait, the food was brought to my car with an apology that they didn't catch that it was a burrito and that they also were out of burrito wraps. I found it odd that there would be both of these excuses at the same time. So I got carne asada tacos in what they brought with no realistic option to adjust. The tacos were tasty but the carne asada was bland with no grilled flavor or seasoning. The meat quality was good though. The refried beans were good. The parking lot experience was a little unnerving because as I was starting up my car a shirtless guy was yelling at me and seemed hacked off for no reason. The service was very friendly and the salsa was tasty. Tip: make sure to order said delicious salsa, it doesn't come with the giant Chinet plate of food wrapped in foil, though a fork and napkin do. They also have the best diet soda selection I've found in town: Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper (yay!), and Diet Pepsi. You know, for those of us into drinking chemicals. They're generous with the asada and very helpful. When I asked to sub beans for the rice on the side, he asked if I wanted to sub beans for rice in the burrito too. Thoughtful service, especially for a food truck! I wanted to love this because it's an old-school Anchorage food truck. But while the portions were hearty and the food filling, I won't forsake Taco King, Burrito King, or my favorite Serrano's for Benny's. This food was a tiny bit too salty and the cheese in my burrito wasn't melty. I'm kind of obsessed with melted cheese: I don't see the point in a burrito if it doesn't include steak and melted cheese. I've have been eating at Benny's since I was in HS (36 years ago when they were on Northern Lights Blvd where the hotel is now) and even though I've moved away and now back to Anchorage, I ALWAYS eat here. I have always ordered the same thing (bean burrito with cheese and a side of rice) so I can't say how everything else on the menu is, but I can say it's not as good as it used to be- but it's still GOOD. The bean burrito was actually too big (hard to handle with the hot, gooey insides) and I noticed a few years back they seem to have gone to a bag mix on the cheese. The old thick grate cheddar (or maybe it was Colby) was better on the burrito. The rice was PERFECT! I'm one of those that doesn't like her Spanish rice corrupted with corn & stuff. The salsa seemed spicier than before, but still excellent. Overall, 4 out of 5 - it's a classic place to get your fill and they are quick! As a happy, beachside resident of sunny California, there is very little I miss about good ole Anchorage, Alaska...where I was fortunate enough to spend my formative years. I miss my family. I miss the rare warm sunny summer day when the sun never sets and the mosquitos leave me alone. I miss the fact that a fleece jacket counts as formal wear. And I miss, god do I miss, Benny's bean and cheese burritos. Maybe it's because they are deep fried to absolute perfection right in front of you as soon as you order them, maybe it's because the cheese is so orange it may be radioactive. Hell, maybe it's because, as the previous reviewer said, they put delicious chewy brains in the beans (is that what makes them so tasty?). I don't know. And I don't really care. All I know is, I want one (let's be honest, I want two...or maybe even three). I want one now. And I have yet to find a Southern California burrito as delicious as Benny's. read more

OK, seriously. Can't believe I am the first to review Benny's Bean Wagon. I haven't even lived in Anchorage since 1995. What can I say. It is an old beat up van that has been converted to a kitchen that cooks up the most awesome fried bean and cheese burritos ever. They used to be located across from Sears on a dirt lot that is now occupied by some chain hotel. Remember when the carnivals would come to town, they would set up camp with Benny's square in the middle. This is one of the first stops I make when I come back to visit. I even dragged my husband here on one of many holiday trips home. Where else can you get some great burritos and tacos, served up piping hot on a paper plate wrapped with foil. Grab a can of pop from the fridge and take it back to your car to enjoy. This was one of my first experiences with burritos as a kid. We would always come here and get the fried bean and cheese burritos with beans and rice. The menu is very simple. Cut and dried. Basic Mexican fare at reasonable prices. And you get to walk into the kitchen and watch them make it. Ha They have simple food like tacos and burritos rice and beans, you can get them Ala carte or on a platter. Their taco sauce is awesome. Always ask for extra. Tacos are nice and crispy but you must have a fried burrito. Get it stuffed with just beans, beans and beef, or just cheese. They are the bomb anyway you get them. Enchiladas are tasty, rice is fluffy and beans are the runny kind, if you like them that way. It's all good, try it all. What a great concept, to sell Mexican food out of a van. I'm sure it runs, sometimes, maybe. Down in Southern Cali where I live now, they call these "gut trucks", they drive around from work site to work site and sell food that rots your gut. I've been a fan since the '70's when Benny had his truck out at the G.A.A.B parking lot. on Tudor Road...then behind the old Gary King's on NL Blvd., then across the street from Sears, & now on Cope Street.... it's still great as ever....Tostada, side of rice, jalapenos, hot sauce & a drink. After reading Vic's review about Zorba's Gyros drive through, I wondered if Benny's Food Wagon was still at it, (same general area!) and I am pleased to find out that they are, even after all these years- gosh I wonder how many years, since I used to come here all the time when I worked in the area. I would get a plate and bring it back to work and everyone in the breakroom would drool. I would say- hey, go get your own plate! My favorite are the refried beans because they aren't over-seasoned- au natural pinto beans the way they are intended to be. And who doesn't love tacos? Their taco mix is so unique and tasty with just the right amount of spice. I never did figure it out, but I swear there were bits of potato in there. Fun stuff. The burritos are good also, but deep fried, which may not be to everyone's liking. They have cold soda on board, and always a smile for you. My tummy was always happy after stopping here. Well, this in is in corrospondance to the review that said bennys served brain? Well, i would just like people to know that I have been going to bennys my entire life, having grown up in anchorage, and have had various family memebers work there that sometimes arent very good with english. Its true that the beans arent vegetarian, they are made with lard, and the burritos are BEEF and Bean. I have a friend who is alergic to almost everything, so i asked to look at the food labels. The Burritos are USDA aproved. I think its USDA, somethign along those lines. And they contain ground beef. I dont want to question the accomplishment of going to cullinary school, but if ground beef has brain, then the burritos have brain just like burgers and any other ground beef you buy at the supermarket. I also know the meat suplyers and they serve many restaurants in anchorage and really, brain? Well, I LOVE BENNYS, and i would recomend it to anyone who likes simple mexican food. I just moved up to Alaska from Texas but when I want some GOOD Mexican food I turn to Benny's, hands down. I was introduced to Benny's by my husband and his family and fell in love day one. Their menu is very simple with burritos, enchiladas, tacos, etc. and they offer whole and half orders in case you don't have a big appetite. I love everything on The menu and adore the rice and beans. Our 3 yr. old daughter has decided she no longer likes beans, but will devour Benny's beans. They only offer walk-in and pick-up dining, not sit down, but that hasn't ever stopped my family because we like to eat at home. I love Benny's and feel like I am back home when I have their delicious food. We highly recommend venturing to this taco wagon because you will not be disappointed. read more

I grew up in Anchorage over 40 years ago. As a teen I discovered Benny's when he had the truck sitting on the corner of Nothern lights and C street. It moved many times as the town grew and thousands of us followed it like sheep. His family recipe for refried beans and rice is BY FAR the best I have ever had. Every time I go to another mexican food place and order the beans and rice I judge it by Bennys. They all fail miserably. I remember the serious garlic breath that lasted the rest of the day and I think he put actual lard in the beans but not sure. I called there once from PA to beg for the recipe and was told politely, no. If they close someday without disclosing it to the world it will be a crime against humanity.
