I've been to several locations and this is definitely different. The tables are packed in tightly together, the noise from so many people crammed into such a small place is horrible. The first floor is mainly just a waiting area and you have dinner upstairs, however the sushi is made downstairs and I'm not sure what else, but the waitress had to run up and down the stairs to retrieve things for our table, on top of being overwhelmed with so many tables, the service was clearly lacking, though not necessarily her fault. One person in our party never even got their sushi, the other party at our table never got their white rice (since this is brought by the waitress) refills never happened after repeated requests. Our chef had no personality and apparently didn't like the use of garlic butter, as all our food was rather dry. Next time we will make the drive to Chicago, this was not an experience I would like to repeat for the cost, especially since they automatically add 20% gratuity for a service that didn't deserve it. read more

Warning, before you order any Benihana gift cards. On 12/3/23 I ordered several Benihana physical gift cards and their website promised it would be mailed in 3-5 business days but when I checked on 12/9/23, 7 days after I placed my order, it still states the order is "in Process". I called the support number 833/326-1006 and was told that once the gift cards are put in the USPS mail, I should expect to wait another 7-15 more days. Just a heads up to anyone that orders the gift cards and believes they will receive them in 3-5 business days. I would have been happy if they had been put in the USPS during that 3-5 days but the customer representative said there is nothing they can do since the order is in "process" except cancel the order and refund the payment. The food is amazing and consistent every time. The ambiance is a little run down but you go for the show and the food not the fine dining. Service is usually quick and friendly. I went here for the first time ever a couple of days ago. While I wasn't particularly impressed with the somewhat dated interior, the food was very good. I ordered the Hibachi Steak with fried rice, and I was pleased to see that everything was made fresh right in front of me. In fact, the meal was five courses I believe. We started with an onion soup, then salad, some shrimp, and then the rice, vegetables and our steak at the end. Our chef was very talented and very friendly. Even with different proteins like shrimp, chicken and steak being made at the same time, he was able to cook them such that they were each perfectly done and finished at the same time so nobody at the table had to wait. Overall, I was very impressed with the food and the experience. I wanted to use my birthday discount of $30 that was sent to my email. I called and asked if I could use it on a Friday on my actual birthday and they said absolutely not which I was shocked by. When we got there, we were told reservations were full for hibachi and our only option was to sit downstairs at a table or at the bar. No hibachi experience but we said OK. My friend and I were ignored toward the end of the meal and had to ask for the dessert that came with our meal. I asked the server a couple questions just to make conversation and I got a one word response without looking at me which was very awkward. When we asked for the bill and told him I had the birthday discount printed, he said we couldn't use it because we had to order a whole other entree. We hesitantly agreed to one to go and then he brought the receipt for $90, including the discount, and also including 20% gratuity without us being aware of that policy, and without the hibachi experience. I am so sad because I used to love Benihana. I would come here almost every year for my birthday and love that they would take your picture, and bring out a dessert. We should have left after I saw the other table had two people with birthdays and as the one server was singing to them she said, "sorry, what was your name again.." Okay so, the food was absolute garbage. I usually get so excited for the scallops. I was thinking about them all day, no joke. The scallops were cut into thirds so that the pieces were paper thin. The hibachi chef burnt the mushrooms, and put so much soy sauce on the onions they were almost inedible. To top it all off they add 18% gratuity to your check, nowhere did it say this. So we talked to the manager, told him these issues. And literally differed and justified everything. It was a joke. I've been on their mailing list for quite some time but never made my way there, however, this year my husband and I decided to finally use our birthday vouchers. I understood we must spend $30 to use the voucher so our plans were to go on two occasions because we share the same birthday. What we missed is that in this fine year of 2020, that birthday voucher must be PRINTED! They will not accept seeing your email. They will not accept seeing your ID with your name and birthday. No exceptions. This left a sour taste in my mouth because it was the sole reason why we planned this date night days in advance and drove at least 30min from across town. We proceeded to order anyway and boy did things add up quickly. The chef was great but by the time he came out, I was no longer in the mood for the theatrics. He clanked his spatulas on the grill for what felt like 99x and at this point, I just wanted him to cook. The food was okay, a bit bland and there wasn't a whole lot of it, ESPECIALLY for the price. They also gave us small plastic utensils to eat with which was annoying because it was hard to really get a good amount of food on the forks. I guess this was this Covid precaution. FYI: Noodles are not included with the Hibachi...you will pay extra for what should be included with your meal. Towards the end of our dining experience, the waitress said that dessert came with our meal so we ordered ice cream and sherbet (which surprisingly came with REAL spoons sooooo why couldn't we have a real fork?!!). She then asked whose birthday it was and I sure thought she'd gotten a change of heart about the vouchers. "Both of ours", I replied, "but we were trying to use his voucher tonight." Well, she came back with birthday candles in our dessert and took our pic with her cell phone. My coworkers and I have gone to Benihana several times for team lunches. This time the only positive thing our our experience was the yum yum sauce which is certainly yummy. We arrived and were told we couldn't sit at the hibachi grill during lunch or we would have to pay full price. We have eaten there at lunch so I'm not sure the change. We opted to sit at a table. Next to us, there was a table of people who spent much of the time arguing with their waitress, yelling loudly and eventually one of the guys was dancing shaking his butt - while we were eating. A woman came over and took our orders. She was snippy and seemed unfriendly. When she left a coworker said "well she was friendly" sarcastically, but it turns out that was the owner. Several of our orders of the lunch special hibachi were wrong. One didn't come with chicken fried rice as requested. One came out cold. The portions were tiny. I ordered the steak and shrimp combination and the steak was tiny and dry and the shrimp were okay but very small. Very little vegetable and they brought me fried rice instead of the white rice I requested. Our checks were also messed up. I got charged for chicken fried rice when I didn't order it and the staff could not understand what I was trying to get fixed. We also couldn't tell who our server was. We had 3 different ones during our lunch. Finally, there is a note on the menu that they add 18% gratuity to all orders (regardless of size). Benihana has gone downhill. The owner clearly only cares about money, the service and food were mediocre at best. If you want a great hibachi deal and a pleasant experience, I highly recommend Fujiyama on Hwy 100. I can not believe this location has such poor reviews. I'll start by saying I have been to the Hawaii location, Torrance, San Bruno, Cupertino, San Francisco, and now Milwaukee. So I have a good beat on what a Benihana experience is all about. This location was a bit dated in appearance but the food and service was incredible. A dirty unwanted plate was whisked away in moments, drinks never dried up before being offered a refill, and our Chef was very engaging. And a five buck valet was very much appreciated since there seems to be a huge road construction project underway. So go to this Benihana for your special engagements, date nights, office appreciation luncheons, well for just about any reason really because they are working hard and well deserving of our attention. in 2013 we went here for my birthday and it was nearly empty. We shared a grill with only 4 other people. Chef was mediocre, but nice, and they took our picture and gave me birthday ice cream. We had no coupon, and it was expensive. In 2014 we went online and signed up for the birthday coupon. We made a reservation and it was PACKED. When we got there, we were 10 minutes early for our reservation, but they didn't seat us until 35 minutes after our reservation time - 45 minute wait time is too much! The hostess did not provide us with an update, and when the table that we were sharing with other people was ready she neglected to come get us. I had to ask, "Are we in that party as well?" as she was heading up the stairs. When we got to the grill there was a giant party immediately to our left and also in front of us. It consumed 2-3 grills. They were being so loud it ruined our entire dining experience, really. We couldn't hear ourselves talk to enjoy the dinner. It was also freezing and we were sitting next to the window. We had two servers that were nice enough, but we were often thirsty and had to ask a number of times for items. At the end, the 1st server forgot to take the birthday coupon off, even though I had given it to him, but the 2nd server brought the ice cream. The 2nd server also took our picture, which the 1st server blew off. It's part of the birthday thing - something kinda hoakey that we do, I guess. Your dining experience will be at the mercy of the other people at your table (it really sets the tone) and the enthusiasm of your chef (has the ability to continue or change the tone). Our visit was a really confusing experience and the environment made it so unpleasant that I honestly don't even remember what we ate. I have been to this location a few times in addition to many other Benihana locations throughout the country and it hurts to say the downtown Milwaukee location really needs to improve. The property itself seems to have been going downhill for years without any fixes or improvements with old carpet, decor, etc. The location has two floors with a small bar and a few regular tables which are generally used as a waiting area for the teppan tables upstairs. Usually there is a few minute wait so we are told to sit at the bar downstairs, but almost every time no one greets us at the bar and asks if we want a drink while we wait, its almost eerie. As for the food, the fried rice, which is a necessity if you go, is up to par with Benihana standards, same with the other standards that come with a teppan meal (salad, soup, ice cream) but that is expected. The steak has been great almost every time (not over-salted as it can be at Teppan places), and so has the chicken. I do not particularly recommend getting the seafood at this location, as I have had a few instances where it has tasted a bit fishy, in a literal sense. As for the staff, they have been great. The waiters have been attentive and helpful and the hibachi chefs have been nice, though it seems like there is a high turnover for the chefs and seem to be under trained/practiced and occasionally only going through the motions. Overall, if you are really in the mood for hibachi and don't mind the old dark atmosphere/location than give it a try as there really aren't any other hibachi locations downtown. read more

Here's the stage-6:45 on a Sunday evening, the Bucks had finished a game not 2 hours earlier 1 block south of here, and they couldn't sit anyone or serve anyone at the front hibachi table during the 45 minutes we waited (were told 30 minutes since we didn't have a reservation). The same worker was making sushi, waiting on a hibachi table and in the time we were there, made salads and delivered them to the one table in sight. Was here for a birthday, and our group of four were seated at a hibachi table. We ended up being the only group that was there which was amazing. I was pretty surprised that it wasn't busy at all, especially around 7:30- 8 pm on a holiday, but I was glad it wasn't. Our waiter was very attentive and was always around to help with anything that we needed. The chef was entertaining even though there were moments when the banging of the knives or spatula got a bit too loud. Overall, we had a great experience with great service and food. The price is slightly on the higher end, but we were expecting that to be the case anyways. My issue with this place would be with their apparent parking that is available at the back. There is absolutely no way for us to know that as there were no signs posted. We ended up paying for metered parking (Downtown Milwaukee rate). Another issue would be that this place doesn't seem to be wheelchair accessible. We have a stroller with us, and we had to carry it up 4-5 steps before being able to take the elevator to the second floor. Carrying the stroller wasn't that big of a deal, but I can see that being an issue with someone in a wheelchair. read more

I always love the experience at Benihana so I chose to go there for my birthday today. My son gets a kick out of seeing the tricks the chef does and the food is great. It's really neat to sit at the communal tables with other people and get to know them. The only thing that I would change if I could would be the order some of the food is cooked. I order the filet mignon and lobster and my lobster is always done much sooner than the steak and the other vegetables that come with the meal. So I either need to eat the lobster without any of the sides or wait and then it's a bit cold. But that really doesn't take away from the experience. The cook wasn't entertaining. He was very quiet and he didn't even try to catch our attention. On the other hand, the food was good. I liked the flavor of the garlic rice. The chicken hibachi was nice and tender. However, the meal doesn't stand out as amazing. This place is decent if you come with a coupon, but remember to print the coupon. The coupon was for $30 off, with lots of fine print: must print out coupon, must give to server before ordering, must order an adult entree at full price, must show ID with coupon, only available Monday-Thursday, available for dinner only, cannot be used for Happy Hour or any other promotion. Alright, so I followed all the rules, and we made a reservation for dinner on a Thursday. We arrived a little early for our reservation. The place was nowhere near busy. The host asked us to have a seat at the bar while we wait for our table. The restaurant has two floors. The bar is on the first floor. Walking through the first floor, to get to the bar, I got to check it out. They have a sushi counter, with a handful of seats; next to that is the bar, with seating for about a dozen; then the floor has some small tables and one hibachi table. The decor seems a bit outdated; perhaps this place has been here for 40 years. Right as we were about to have a seat at the bar, the host told us to head upstairs to our table. A second hostess, upstairs, greeted us and showed us to a hibachi table. The decor was the same: needs some updating; maybe get rid of the carpet & replace the chairs. Our waitress was fairly prompt at coming over. She greeted us, noticed my coupon, asked for my ID, and offered us drinks. When she brought our drinks, we ordered. I ordered the Emperor's Feast. This is described as filet mignon & chicken, complete with a 6 course meal of: Benihana onion soup, Benihana salad, hibachi shrimp appetizer, hibachi vegetables, mushrooms, homemade dipping sauces, steamed rice, Japanese hot green tea and ice cream or sherbet. My companion ordered filet mignon, which came with a 5 course meal: everything but the ice cream or sherbet. Soup and salad came together, and were both ok. After we ate the soup and salad, I was ready for another drink. But the chef just arrived, and our waitress was nowhere to be found. So the chef started his show. First some knife pounding & spatula flipping. Then he placed all the food on the grill. Next came the onion volcano. The shrimp was served first. Everyone got 3 shrimp. Then he asked how we preferred our filet cooked. We both requested medium rare. He served mine to me at medium rare. Then he served the other guests. By the time he got to delivering my companion's filet, it had sat on the grill way too long and was medium well. Very disappointing. The prices are expensive, and the chefs are trained. You should be able to get your filet cooked to order. The "hibachi vegetables" were onion and zucchini. So you got your protein, 3 shrimp, onions, zucchini and mushrooms. The chef had to hunt down our white rice; apparently the waitress was supposed to bring it. But she hadn't been around, and I had an empty glass, waiting for a drink, this whole time. Since I had the birthday coupon, the waitress brought me a scoop of ice cream with chocolate sauce & whipped cream. She put a candle in it and made the table sing me 'Happy Birthday'. I suppose that was my "ice cream or sherbet". We never did receive any "Japanese hot green tea". When the bill came, it was $114 for the two us; which includes an 18% gratuity; less the $30 for my birthday coupon; final bill was $84. That's pretty pricey. I've been to other hibachi restaurants, and the bill would be around $80, without a coupon, and with properly cooked steaks. It's not likely that I will return to Benihana. read more

Went there on a busy afternoon for a late lunch. I decided to grab my food to go, which very well could have been my mistake. I ordered the Ocean Feast, which consisted of scallops,lobster and shrimp. It came with fried rice, and soup. I was annoyed with the incredibly small portion sizes for a 50$ dollar meal. The lobster was unrecognizable as it was chopped into pieces. So all in all I was dissatisfied, but I believe I would have enjoyed full ambiance of the meal had I dined in. The food was expensive and this particular location DOES NOT offer any specials which they normally offer for "happy hour" (just check their web site for happy hour menu). There was no waitress and the chef took our order, cooked our rolls and took the payment which was kind of odd. The food was simply ok but the bill was pretty high, we have had much better food for the price paid in a nicer environment. So me and a friend decided to stop by for a to go luck order I just went with a simple chicken fried rice no onion's or scallions. Our order took about 15-20mins before it was ready which is fine. My rice was ok I think I'm just so use to eatting Jasmine rice that stick rice just don't taste the same to me.
