As a parent one always wants to indulge their children in the cute little things life offers. We asked the owner a simple question and she replied it's in the hand out. We asked her for help logging onto her website she replied, "Everyone else can do it." We took our child out and as she grew older we decided to give it another try. We found ourselves in the same dilemma. The owner is very condescending when one asks for help. I will never go to this place again. As an adult I am not in the practice of paying someone to be arrogant, condescending or rude to my family.

I moved to Oxnard from northern California, so I didn't have a whole lot of friends down here. I found out about NEMA through the Bellydance club at Oxnard CC and decided to give it a try in an attempt to get more exercise and boost my self esteem. I got way more than I bargained for! Besides the exercise and a regular reminder that I'm a beautiful woman, I got a group of friends who have stuck by me through all the challenges of being in a new place, and a breakup I went through. Not only that, but I got study buddies, confidence boosting moments on stage, and endless moments of love and laughter. I'm so glad NEMA came into my life when it did I like doing the classes on the weekends the most, but sometimes the night classes work with my busy schedule too. The teachers are all really experienced and offer a wide selection of different dances to learn. The studio is comfy and chic with a well stocked tea and snack bar that they stock with the help of member donations. Sometimes I find kids playing in the back and watching cartoons while their mom's dance (super kid friendly place) and their costume selection makes me feel like a little girl playing dress up! The best part is that I can go study there if I really need it, and because so many of the members are college graduates and students, I can often find help when I need it. The whole place is the definition of supportive and community based.

Back when I lived in Santa Barbara, I was part of the Batuque school. The group is large and active in that city and luckily it has expanded enough to make it to Oxnard. Capoeira Batuque in Oxnard is led by Michael. Though not quite a mestre yet, he is more than apt to teach us. The group is still in its infancy in Oxnard but I love coming to class. You will learn your basic moves: kicks, dodges, cartwheels, some musical skills and maybe even some portuguese! Every class concludes with a roda. Basically we make a circle, play instruments and sing while the capoeiristas play a game in the middle. Sometimes we will head to santa barbara and make a cameo appearance at the larger school. One thing about capoeira is the sense of community and the good connection that you have with schools that are as far as Tokyo. The class won't be the hardest cardio workout in your life, but it is a good workout. You learn how to control your body better and use muscles that are hardly exercised. Classes are Mondays and Wed 6-8 usually. First class is usually free, suggest you try it out.

They moved the cardio upstairs and the weights downstairs which it seems they are doing in all the clubs now. I'm fine with it. My hope was that they would purchase some new cardio equipment which for the most part they didn't. This location also does not offer nearly enough classes which has driven me away to other clubs. The manager here is great and she does all she can with what she has to work with. The refresh looks good and the club is down the block from my house but unfortunately I spend very little time here. I saw one of the regional managers here not to long ago and he said new equipment is coming. I hope it is!

She can manage a smile, but was confused where the restrooms were.... She's not THAT new so one has to wonder if she's ever walked around the gym she works at. I will say that this location is reasonably clean. That said the dumbbell rack is always in a state of disarray. Dumbbells and barbells are left all over the gym. Massive trip hazard and a lawsuit waiting to happen. No towel service at all. Comparing this location to Newbury Park it's hard to tell these locations are run. Y the same company. I've tried the Oxnard location a number of times and it fails every time. I was so disgusted this time I ended my workout and walked out before I was done. I just couldn't focus on my training as I couldn't locate the proper equipment and had to make sure I didn't trip over anything in any walkable area. New management is desperately needed at this location.
