This is a must stop for me while in Del Ray -- you never know when you'll find a treasure! This consignment shop is two levels of toys, baby gear, maternity wear, and children's/toddler's clothing. On my last visit, I walked away with two of the most darling holiday outfits for my eldest daughter. At under $25 a piece, they were both high quality and barely worn. The children's boutique next door was selling similar pieces for over twice the price! Employees are friendly and the selection is well curated. My addictions to Mom's and frozen custard bring me here fairly often. I only find decent items in my price range 25% of the time. Usually it is only one item and I rarely buy clothing because their boy items are unattractive and overpriced. Sometimes the items are worn and the price does not seem to reflect that. Meanwhile, every time I go to LLaL, I buy at least 10 items (for comparison), and I have never left Goodwill or Salvation Army empty-handed. The shoes are the worst offenders. I can purchase similar new items cheaper. What I did appreciate: the baby-toddler girls selection was nicer; maternity clothes are plentiful and somewhat reasonable; you can check inventory on their website; they have a "clearance bin"; I have seen them giving away a nice bassinet for free; the gear/porch area has unique items; robust selection of winter snowsuits (for boys too). While the coats were considerably more expensive than I would normally pay, it's good to know they curate an expansive selection here if needed in the future. But those prices mean the consignors are the winners here, right? As a consignor, it took a couple of months, but the majority of my (maternity) items were sold. They usually accept maternity even when they aren't accepting other items. Unfortunately, every question I asked at the initial sign-up started an argument and lectures about her having to pay rent and what I should have known (it was NOT on the website) that were completely unnecessary. I would do a "drop and run" in the future to avoid speaking to the owner. I have given a charitable extra star for a small independent woman-owned business but it is objectively more of a 2 star operation...it took many visits before the price aversion wore off and I was able to spend enough time searching to find something reasonable. But I am a fourth generation master thrift shopper who is easily turned off by most consignment operations. The fact that I still shop here suggests that good deals happen on occasion. read more

I'm a fan of this store. Perhaps I've never encountered this loathsome owner everyone gossips about, but the employees I've met have been pleasant when I enter, hands-off while I shop, and friendly while I check out. This is ideal for me as my toddler tends to entertain himself in activities that require me to reorganize their shoe departments before we make our exit. I've never felt that anyone was annoyed by his antics or anything like that, and in turn I am meticulous about straightening everything in his wake. I have come in and left empty-handed, but more often I leave with a few awesome finds, and sometimes I leave with a couple large bags of awesome finds. I agree that occasionally something is priced incorrectly (imo) for level of wear, age, or brand. To me consignment should be priced lower than the same item new, on sale, and out of season in the original store. There are PLENTY of great deals to be found, though. Some of my favorite kids pieces that are washed and worn to death are from B&B. Sometimes seeing how an item holds up to washing is super helpful, and you certainly get that itel with consignment. E.g. Baby Boden, Jaquardi, kissy kissy, and Petit Bateau items are rockstars while Carters is almost disposable clothing. I had walked past Bellies & Babies one evening when dining in Del Ray and made a mental note to return to check it out. I visited last weekend during what was a big sale. I did not end up purchasing anything, because, quite honestly, the sale prices were equivalent or only slightly less than brand new clothes, so why not spend the money on new stuff? Everything was organized upstairs; divided into girls room and boys room. Maternity wear was also upstairs. Downstairs was gear and toys. I'd definitely return to look at some of the toys maybe after the baby is born, but for now I'm waiting to see what I receive as gifts in that realm since most people seem to buy clothes or toys as gifts. I was not too impressed with the maternity wear, but I did purchase a dress and a black skirt. I still need an XS or a S that actually runs small, so while I tried on several items, only these two actually fit. If I get larger (which I should considering I still have 12 weeks to go), I would return to shop here again since I may actually fit into some of the clothes at that point. Overall, I'd suggest stopping in at least to browse and maybe get ideas for things you may want to purchase. For example, I saw a really cute tummy time activity mat but I'd much rather buy it new than used and I found a similar one on Amazon for only a few bucks more than the advertised used price. read more

I have been visting this store for over 3 years and I had always felt I was paying too much but the clothes were unique so I dealt with it. Although the rudeness of the owner- Dawn had always been tolerable until today. SHE REPREMANTED MY 20 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER & THEN ME!! Why? For my daughter removing a stuffed toy the size of my hand!! Her words lacked the simple dignity you should show to humans let alone your customers!! I left her store feeling sad and hurt that mysekf and my young sweet daughters digninty was worth so little to this shop owner.Shocking. Last time I went in there was little traffic in the store so the owner treated me to an hour of shopping assistance--absolutely fabulous. Very cute store! Don't be put off by the entrance like I was...I must admit I was a bit hesitant as that section seemed a bit drab to me. But keep walking through to the real front door and oooooooh - fun, fun, fun! All the new boutique-y type stuff is upfront. Then there is a main area with miscellaneous things, but all well-organized. Continue upstairs to the "boys room" or "girls room" or "moms room" [as you can see, I love organization]. B&B does a great job with this. They do have a bunch of brand name clothing, but some of it I thought was a bit tattered/worn. I know, I know - it 's a consignment store. However am I supposed to sacrifice worn-quality over chic brand? So I was a bit disappointed by that. Of course this is a very general comment in regards to some individual items, but I thought it was worth a mention. Just seemed like an unfortunate coincidence of the 3 items I really liked for my little one. I also know that they are there to make a profit despite being a second-hand store, but some of the prices just seemed a bit high to me. Isn't the point to get rid of the stuff to make room for more? Things should be flying off the shelves even if that means selling items for 20-30% of their retail value (imho). Maybe I was just spoiled by Monkey's Uncle in DC...[sigh]... But let me finish by saying that whoever was working in the store that day was an ANGEL! So sweet and so helpful without being pushy. "Have you ever been here before?" she politely asked. However, I don't think I will return because the prices seemed ridiculously high for secondhand. 3-6 month boy polos were $15-18; I have bought new stuff at Gap for 1/3 the price. They were even trying to sell a dingy Old Navy maternity shirt for $16. The shirt was definitely worth about $3! Very strange. Their Aden+Anais 4-pack swaddles were $40. The most I had ever seen them was $34.99 (and I actually buy them at Marshalls for about $14). We bought a second hand Dutalier glider here and came back for maternity dresses. The glider was relatively new and a good deal at $220 and all we had to do was clean the pillow covers. We came back because I needed dresses for a few weddings. The owner was very helpful in pulling things for us and she has great taste. Almost everything worked! Got about 4 dresses that ranged in price from $16.50 to $50.00. It's crowded, but that's because it's popular. They also have what appear to be darling gently used baby clothes. We don't need those just yet, but will certainly come back when the little one arrives. So happy there's a store like this is the DC area! P.s. Very very cute store. While we waiting for a table at Del Ray Cafe, we stopped by and I didn't even make it upstairs as I saw a Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag that I had been searching for used on Craigslist. The condition was almost new and was cheaper than anything I can find on Craigslist even after sales tax. I was happy with it. I jokingly told our server at the Del Ray Cafe that the 30 minutes wait cost me $65! It was an expensive lunch. Bellies and Babies has a good selection of both new and used items for expectant mamas and little ones. In terms of maternity wear and baby preparation, there are some really awesome ideas at work here - you can rent formal dresses for a few days instead of having to buy new pieces, they are available for hosting baby showers, and sometimes free classes (like cloth diapering) are offered. Nice selection of Aden and Anais gear and Ergo carriers (all new) - I think they carry baby wraps, too. Small but decent collection of books. There are really, really cute baby and kids' clothes, mostly in good condition, as well as accessories (oh, the multitude of little barrettes and headbands!) - many of them locally made. Despite there being some cute things, I didn't find anything maternity-wise for myself. (Our baby's gender was a surprise, so when I visited B&B, I didn't purchase any baby clothes). We did, however, pick up a 3 disc childbirth prep DVD/CD set. Granted, I guess we should have checked it out before leaving the store, but after paying and leaving, we opened it up and noticed that 1 of the 3 discs was missing! (Ironically, it was the DVD component of the set - the audio CDs, which we didn't care as much about, were there) We headed back and the sales gal who was working was understanding and took it back, but I was surprised that the item wasn't marked as being sold as "incomplete" or something. read more

I prefer 529, but come here more because it's closer to my house. I've scored a lot of great deals during their seasonal clearance sales, but find the regular prices to sometimes be a bit too high for the condition of the clothes. I also agree with what others have said about the customer service- it always feels like I'm bothering them when I walk in. Stopped by this cute store and saw a lot of fall and winter items and was impressed by the availability of attractive maternity dresses. Picked up a couple of Thomas The Tank Engine DVDs for $3 each (!). It's a consignment shop but also they have some nice new items like bamboo fabric swaddle cloths and organic soap.I especially liked the parking lot as I have a hard time finding parking in Del Ray when it's busy.But it's not wheelchair accessible and you'd have a hard time getting a stroller up the steps too but I reckon they'd go find things for you if you called in and asked for curb service. read more

As a fan of the environment and a person SHOCKED by the amount of money people will spend on stuff for their kids (that they'll only be wearing 3 months), Bellies and Babies is a welcome sight! Dawn, the owner, is friendly and never fails to remember my name and the fact that I have two boys. Her clothes are high end which isn't something I care about, but the prices are awesome. It's probably the same price as buying something new at Target, but the design and quality is much better. The store is laid out in an open, light, airy way, and the jazz in the background is so relaxing. Plus, what other store caters to your kids by having a play area AND a stocked changing table in the bathroom? My son had an accident out in front of the store, minutes after we'd walked out, and I was able to go back in, buy a cloth diaper and clean him up, all for under $8. Amazing. I want to love this consignment shop -- my clothes sell very well according to my online account. However, the store is two months overdue with my payout. First they took three weeks to respond to my inquiry, then said my check is in the mail. I called a few days ago saying I didn't receive it, and they say checks are held up because they are switching banks. I have asked the store owner to call me and still--no call. Terrible customer service and frustrating since we are supposed to be helping each other make money, and they won't give me mine. I'm going to keep trying. read more

Do not consign your maternity clothes with this place. I took a lot of time preparing a large number (about 15-20) of high-end clothes from places like Pea in the Pod. They took my clothes, presumably sold them for a profit and never paid me a cent! I called several times and they were slow to respond. When I finally reached someone, they said the check would be in the mail. That was three years ago and I am still waiting. I felt compelled to write this review now because I want to share how Bellies & Babies is taking advantage of people in the community. In retrospect, I wish that I consigned my clothes with a reputable shop or just donated them to charity. BEWARE!!!! read more

They do have unhelpful hours during the week, and I was frustrated today to be told that I wouldn't be able to get a weekend appointment to have an item considered for consignment for about a MONTH, which is pretty wild. When my daughter first starting outgrowing her clothes I started looking for consignment shops and was encountered with insane waiting lists (the Monkey's Uncle) or crazy specifications for the condition of the clothes (one store wanted me to dryclean the clothes). I finally found Bellies and Babies and I continue to consign and shop here. Once you become a consigner you can drop your clothes/items off at anytime without an appointment and you can list your clothes online. I love their online system because you can immediately see what items have been accepted, what items have sold, and how much credit you have. Yes, the clothes are pricey at times but they are in good condition (whereas most of the clothes at Monkey's Uncle look used) and the trick is to consign your clothes first and then come back and shop when you have plenty of credit left. I have consigned about $500 worth of clothes/items in a year. The other tip I recommend is only buying designer clothes from here because yes you can find Gap clothes cheaper when they go on sale. As far as the staff goes, Dawn is not the warmest person but she certainly isn't rude, she's usually busy with her kids which I think we all understand. The other girls are just lovely. They always remember my name, my daughter's name and even know my account number. I think everyone should give this shop a try. read more

My mom and I went to look for maternity clothes, and while the overall selection was a bit hit or miss (to be expected with any consignment shop), we found some great pieces. I have to agree with the woman who didn't like the owner's attitude. A few times I've been there, she's given me this awkward, typical NOVA, repressed, entitled, and insecure attitude. There isn't that air of welcome-ness when you walk in there as a customer, which I find strange being a woman who likes to spend my money. Each time I've spent no less than 100.00 in there and after this last jaunt over there, I really felt like I could find better quality stuff just waiting for a sale. I paid $10.00 a piece for USED okay items, not gently used quality items ..then I went to Target and found some clothing on sale for $5.00. So moral of the story is, that you can find better stuff for better prices, even brand new, elsewhere. We've lived in the neighborhood for 4 years and I finally stopped in a few months ago for the first time. I don't know what took me so long to get to this store! They have a great selection of kids clothes and whenever I've visited, I have found exactly what I was looking for here (eg for Easter I needed a white shrug/sweater for my 2 year old girl and a "spring-ish" dress shirt for my 4 year old boy for a total of $20!) After first discovering this store a couple months ago and having a pleasant shopping experience, I was very disappointed with my visit this past Saturday afternoon. I did find some nice quality materinty clothes for myself and a few things for the baby, but the woman behind the register was extremely rude to both me and my boyfriend for absolutely no reason. I am unsure if she is the owner/manager or a sales clerk, but she is clearly not in the right business if that is how she treats customers. I'm surprised by all the bad reviews. Dawn has always been very chipper and helpful when I've been there, and I go a lot. The only not-so-great experience was when I went to return a piece of baby gear that I realized was not the model I thought it was. I didn't know that the 7-day return policy only applied to clothing. She accepted it, but was annoyed -- which I honestly think I would be too. But that was a long time ago. I started going for the maternity section when they first opened. Maternity clothes are SO expensive -- and hard to find unless you are in Motherhood Maternity. B & B has a great selection at very reasonable prices and good quality. Also low-price accessories like new/like-new nursing bras, belly bands, hosiery, those things to tape your belly button in, etc. And I rented a fabulous formal dress for a holiday party. Dawn gave great advice about stuff for nursing wear. The baby gear is great, and *great* prices. Much of it is brand new, the rest good quality. Diaper covers, pumping supplies, toys, travel beds, diaper bags, carriers (baby bjorn etc). And I've gotten very cute clothes for my son. For people complaining about prices, yeah, some things are a bit too close to regular price for me ($10 for a pair of Children's Place pants). On the other hand, I've gotten a really nice toddler-size suit for $20, used boys' dress shoes for $8, and brand-new Skechers for $18. Do I want to pay $18 for shoes? No. But considering the normal price of any quality kids' shoes is double that, I'm happy. It's not a garage sale, it's a high-quality consignment shop. If you want to get Target clothes, go to Target. If you want higher-end clothes at Target prices or brand new/gently used gear lower than anybody else's, go to B & B. read more

Perfect timing for this store to open up as I begin my second trimester! I popped in last weekend and scored three pairs of maternity pants--one brand new with tags--for very, very reasonable prices. The lot only fits 3- 4 cars max and trying to shop on a weekend in Alexandria made it necessary to drive up and down the side streets before being able to park. I could never find a local consignment shop or sale that sold the quality of items I had tucked away in boxes (many with the tags still on!), until I found Bellies & Babies in Alexandria. I took my items to Dawn, the owner, and she looked at each piece with care and careful consideration. She accepted nearly every piece, and even offered me a higher rate for being one of her first consignors!
