A family owned custom framer and art gallery,Gallery Art Center has been here for nearly 40-years…read more They specialize in creating amazing showcases for customer's art and collectables which is why I often suggest them for those in need. They also double as a small gallery with some beautiful art, one of the rare sellers of originals outside of the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. They feature many local and national artists here at their small gallery in the shopping center Reed and Henderson. Susan (I think her name is) is the owner and gives upstanding customer service. You can tell from the start she really cares for doing a high quality job, helping you through the process selecting frames and mattings. She and her team look at framing as if it were an art form itself, often providing more than you expected. A few years ago I had a signed Ted Ginn Jr picture that I thought would benefited from better framing than what my poor skills and cheap drug store frame could provide. I expected something a little better but what came out was amazing. They took my needs seriously and came up with a nice display that augmented my collectable into something worthy of hanging in my home. They take great care in framing anything, from antique maps, fine art, or even a cherished poster. The prices of course vary from style, size, and shape--it can be a little expensive compared to do-it-yourself with an Odd Lots frame, but the result is well worth the expertise you pay for. I've purchased a few small painting and prints here before too. For a small space the art here can be diverse and striking. Featured here my last visit was P. Buckley Moss whose paintings are whimsical landscapes and still lifes, Takmaj and her bloaty beautiful colors of cityscapes, Renee Bovet 's Van Gogh-ish rendering of place, and Laurie VanBalen's awesome Impressionistic oils among other talented artist. Glass art is sold here too. Jewelry found here includes necklaces, wrist bands, and earrings. I did not notice any rings or ankle braces for those wondering, but I think I've seen them here before. I highly recommend this shop if you have valuables, collectables, art or anything of sentimental value you want to hang.

A Muse is one of the few galleries in Columbus that has a parking lot (and a bathroom). One star…read morefor that alone. I made my first trip there earlier this week. It seemed like a strange location, under a bridge, just across from the Parking Solutions office. This is definitely a female bent establishment. The themes were all about femininity and trees. The art was okay. It definitely wasn't bad, but I don't think it was all the way there yet. I didn't see one piece that I downright enjoyed or that drew on any kind of emotion. There was a piece with a girl and some eggplants. I thought that was skillfully done, and I contemplated the meaning for a while. It held my attention, but it's not something I would want to own. There were also some aviator statues with no arms, but, once again, they were just almost there. The gallery is large though, and it's very inviting. They seem to represent a lot of artists. They have two locations, and they just celebrated their 10 year anniversary. The curator was there, and she was helpful and friendly - almost too helpful and friendly. She asked us how we were doing three times. I wasn't sure if she was suspicious, if she wanted us to leave, or if she just thought we really looked like we needed help. My favorite part of A Muse was the shop dog, shadow. He looked like an aging Great Dane/Black Lab mix. There were two love birds in the office, literal love birds. They were very chirpy. If you go, be sure to go back to the office because there's more art for show back there.

It takes something special to catch my eye, and it happened that a recent erotica show captured my interest. The space was small, like most of the surrounding architecture, but modern and airy. Each of the pieces were well-lit, thanks to large windows and carefully placed artificial light, and the art was thought-provoking. The interior is split among two rooms, which feels awkward at first, but lends itself to a comfortable meandering. Their featured artist Chas Ray Krider was present, and he was kind enough walk us through some of his work. It was a real treat, and shed some light on the subject matter and his creative process. I didn't find the location to be remote, it was full of viewers on our Sunday visit, and my husband and I had a nice lunch afterwards at the neighboring Brown Bag Deli. I also didn't find the curator overly friendly - personable and polite, yes, but certainly not pushy. If you're looking for an artistic afternoon in German Village, the Muse Gallery provides. But you might want to check the exhibit's theme before you visit.

Studios on High is an artist collective. Artists come in and out of ownership of the gallery, but…read morethe average number of associated artists usually hovers around 15. I find that Studios On High has a female slant. Many of the artists are women, many of the themes in the work deal with femininity, and much of the work is aimed (in my opinion) at female buyers. A lot of the art features animals and nature as well. I most appreciate Studios On High for its history as a Columbus gallery; it's been around since the mid-1980s. Many of the artists who leave end up opening their own galleries, case in point, Jeff Hersey of Terra Gallery. If you visit, you'll catch a handful of the artists in the studio; sometimes they're in the process of creating something, or perhaps they're just knitting. The artists are very inviting and don't mind if you hang around to watch them work. My favorite pieces at Studios On High are always the blown glass vessels by husband and wife duo Scott Conover and Lisa Horkin. The tiny vessels are so colorful, and they all have great shapes. I saw Scott and Lisa last summer making the vessels on High St at a Gallery Hop. They also make bowels and vases. The colored pencil drawings by Rhonda Bartoe Tuckers are also phenomenal. They are so smooth that they look like they were painted. Since Studios On High is a collective, there's all kinds of art to be seen (in all kinds of genres): prints, paintings, jewelry, sculptures, paintings, drawings, knits, glass, ceramics, etc. The artwork changes often.

She said her true love is Americana, but her gallery is not overwhelmed with the stuff, which was good for me because it's not really my bag. Alongside antiques, Sharon showcases contemporary art by Ohio artists. Mediums shown include pastels, oils, watercolors, prints, and sculpture. The paintings feature many colorful landscape and still-life scenes. The gallery is stylized to reflect a home. The idea is that it will make the white walls less sterile, making it easier for shoppers to envision the pieces in their own homes. Amongst artists exhibited in the gallery is Daniel Ferlan, whose works were named in the "Best Visual Arts Events" article in The Columbus Dispatch; Sharon proudly displays the article in her storefront window. Personally, I love Daniel's stuff: big-headed children running traveling through nightmare fairytales. I'm big on oxymorons. On special Gallery Hops, if you manage to make it around the swarm of people waiting in line at Jeni's Ice Creams and down E Lincoln St, you'll see artists, maybe a painter or a potter, making art in Sharon's window. I love works in progress.

By chance, we lucked out and visited while the artist himself was onsite. The staff were so friendly, greeting us as soon as we stepped inside and advised that the exhibit was set up on the first floor in a loop. The building is a former home and is quite lovely on its own, and then the council has done a great job organizing their exhibits to complement the building and make it easy to move around. We enjoyed looking at the wide variety of train photos from all around the country, and getting to chat with the artist was nice - he was great with kids too and had a little game for them to find where the photo on his business card was in the gallery. Outside, the grounds are beautiful too and the backyard goes down to the river. There's a nice parking lot available outside and admission is free. We will have to watch for future exhibits!
