There's a little weight but it's because they cook the food as you order it and it's fresh and it's authentic. I love this place.

Best small restaurant is located on Barnes Road just off of University Boulevard. It is the corner store of a nondescript shopping center that has definitely seen better days. The restaurant itself is very simple and nondescript, as well. There is nothing wrong with that. I believe that Jamaican food is best served in such a humble surroundings. In fact, I can say that all the best Jamaican meals that I have had, have come from little hole-in-the-wall, very nondescript places like this restaurant. Unfortunately, Beignets will not being added to this list of great restaurants built in humble surroundings. I found the whole experience rather lackluster, from the service to the good. I walked in during prime lunch hour. I would say about 12:30 to a virtually empty store. There was one gentleman in there awaiting takeout. This should have set the warning bells off and had my Spidey senses tingling (a Spiderman reference there), but I decided that I was there. I was unceremoniously handed a menu and the man walked off. I took that as a signal to find a table. I ended up deciding to go with the lunch special of the jerk chicken, which was $7.50. The food was brought out relatively fast in a takeout container with plastic utensils (probably due to COVID-19). I opened the container and seen a decent amount of rice and three small pieces of chicken. I would say that I would have gotten more meat off of three chicken wings. The rice was bland as was the chicken. The chicken was also dry, as if it had been overcooked or was sitting out way too long. The food had none of the complexity that Jamaican and Caribbean food should have. It was rather one dimensional and I would not be surprised if the jerk sauce was from a jar. Service was pretty bad, as well. Not rude, just uncaring. I was never asked how the meal was or if I needed anything. My food, like the menu, was unceremoniously handed to me and the server was gone. I decided to try this place since I saw it had ox tails and the former reviewer said they were good. First, although the menu said ox tails and a side $18.99 I told him oxtails with rice and beans. The gentleman charged me $25 for the order. The order came in a styrofoam container. There was hardly any oxtails and the container was full of cabbage! The oxtails were not brown at all. They looked greyish like they were put in a pot of water boiled and served without the browning and slow braised fall off the bone meat that I usually get from potters house. So here's the thing, my mom always orders Haitian food in every city she visits. It's a hit or miss and today was a miss because she didn't get what she ordered but was charged an arm and a leg. Decent food, service was a little odd. I did see more to go orders than people dining in and it was prime time lunch hour. Curry chicken lunch special served with beans and rice. Chicken was tender and flavorful but I felt curry could have been stronger. There were a few undercooked beans - like 3 or 4 - in the beans and rice. Not horrible but those firm beans definitely left an impression. Fried pork chunks appetizer was good and served with a spicy cabbage dip/topping/condiment which was tasty. Just called this place to inquire about codfish patties. The lady who answered spoke Creole. I don't speak it too well. I asked if they had any patties. She kept responding in Creole. I told her that I don't speak Creole too well. She didn't care. She insisted I speak Creole. I asked if there was someone who spoke English, she miraculously spoke English saying "No English!" Then she hung upon me. It seems she forgot that she's not in Haiti, but the United States! I've been to this place several times before, in addition to having called several times before, and I was never spoken to like that. I'm deeply disappointed to have been spoken to like that after having frequented their establishment so many times. The food here is excellent, or at least it was the last time. This is a very good Haitian restaurant. I can't say enough about the portions here. Believe me, you will always have some food to take home with you. It's also located in a pretty nice area. I love the legume. It's very meaty and filling. I'm not a big beer fan but this is my weakness. It's very well seasoned and the sauce is very moist. You can also tell that it's a good grade of beef. Still had to use Google Maps to find - parking lot was packed and so was inside. Food was going quickly. I planned on ordering the same thing I did last time - but they were out of sause pwa (bean sauce) and the white rice :-( Instead I had Diri Et Pois Coles (red beans and rice), Legume (stewed veggies ad beef), and Twice Fried Green Plaintains. While I waited on my food and looked around at the place. Little has changed from 2 years ago. The place is still pretty dark, little in decorations, but I noticed new flat screen tvs. Men sat around watching tv and chatting as they ate - joking that they are waiting for Beignets to start selling Haitian moonshine here. This starts a livly debate - but they don't want to get a liqour licence - so that might never happen. I also noticed the patties are now marked "Jamican Patties" still waiting for them to get Haitian patties but at least my senses won't be teased like the last time. And a small cramped table filled with Haitian/Caribbean events. Major plus since I've been missing a good kompa party. So I grabbed a few flyers for later. It wasn't until then that the lady behind cash register figured out I might be Haitian and started to chat. She pretty much said nothing before this time. They ran out of salad and sauce but still packed my plate. The food was much better then I remembered. And the packed parking lot proved that others around are enjoying it as well. I have been a regular at this restaurant for years. I'll give it a 4 only cause I do feel like sometimes the food is better than other days... still good but some days it's really good if that makes sense. They are Haitian so they don't say much but they are super sweet people. They remember my order and can recognize my voice when I call. I love when businesses remember their customers. I usually order the fried fish. It's a red snapper and it's always good. The griot is good & I enjoy the jerk chicken sometimes as well. I go to Haiti about every two months and one thing I love when I go is the food! Coming to Beignets Caribbean Cafe in Jacksonville is my way of getting great Haitian food in the US! The place is always clean and welcoming! Excellent service, friendly staff and food amazing! What else could you ask for! The food here was very good. I would even go as far to say that I would give 4.5 stars. I had jerk chicken, rice and beans, and cabbage. The chicken was good and tender and not too spicy but just spicy enough. My rice and beans were good. My cabbage Had too many thick, tough leaves. The portions were good, it was more than enough food. All the flavors worked very well. My friend had ox tails, rice and peas, and cabbage. She enjoyed her food as well. Her cabbage didn't have the thick tough stems I had. I had one of her ox tails and it was very tender with a nice flavor. This place is absolutely, finger-licking good! The hospitality is top of the line. If you're used to Caribbean places, you know service can be a little slow because that is how they operate on the islands. The culture on the islands tends to be very 'don't worry, be happy' and they enjoy each other's company. That being said- pro tip: if you're in a hurry, don't be afraid to call ahead and place your order! They will prepare it quickly. I was a regular here when I was Jacksonville, so now that I am back visiting this is a treat! I have had the jerk chicken, curry chicken, the ox tail, and the beef patties. Keep in mind this is a Haitian restaurant so the style of cooking is a little different than Jamaican or Trinidadian style, still delicious nonetheless. The jerk chicken is spicy and fresh! It is my favorite. The curry chicken and oz tail are good as well but the ox tail is my least favorite. The lunch special is amazing with LARGE portions. You will have leftovers for sure. The restaurant is easy to find with fairly limited parking but it's not too crowded so that is seldom an issue. At first I thought this place was permanently closed because there were no cars and no open sign. Me and a friend decided to check it out. I'm so glad we decided to pull the door handle because the food was delicious! The restaurant is small but that's what I like. I got rice and beans with ox tail. I can't believe they had ox tail, so I had to try it out. I wanted the soursop shake but they didn't have any. The ox tail was amazingly good. I'm so satisfied and happy. My husband and I tried out Beignets because we were really in the mood for Caribbean but didn't want any of the other options nearby. We hadn't been to Beignets before but heard good things through a family member. We ended up ordering the curry chicken and oxtails. My, oh my, Beignets did not disappoint!!! I don't like coming down on small business establishments that are out here giving it a go and trying to make a way in this cruel capitalist world but some places just gotta do better. Beignets is one of those places. I'm only going to mention the careless service attitude in passing because as I've mentioned in other reviews, Caribbean restaurants aren't usually the place for exceptional service. It's just not what they do. I bring it up here just as a warning to whomever may not already be aware: you're not always going to be treated like your business is means something to the people working there. Ok, now that that's out of the way let's get on to what's really important -- the food. I always first measure a Caribbean restaurant by their patties or empanadas. If you can't get that right then the odds are the rest of your menu isn't popping. I've tried this place twice -- the first time I figured I wouldn't return because the patties were soft, not crispy and lacking superb flavor. There was flavor but nothing that stands out. I came back last Tuesday because my regular lunch spot ran out of patties right before we arrived, and since I promised my 12 year old a beef patty I had to find the nearest place available. I didn't realize it was this place until I was around the corner and it was too late to bail out by then. Of course the patties were exactly the same as before and the stew chicken lunch I ordered was just as underwhelming. Everything was fine but no one wants fine Carribean food. Pizza can be fine because it's pizza. Chocolate cake can be fine because it's chocolate and cake. But beef patties and brown stew and curry needs to be, at a minimum, very good. The flavors are supposed to overwhelm and excite. There's nothing worse than walking out of a Carribean restaurant feeling "aiight." No thank you. read more

The following review was published under my byline in the Florida Times-Union on Saturday, July 11, 2015. This is an original, unabridged version of that review. If you're cruising for a bite along University Boulevard, east of I-95, one blink is all it'd take for you to miss Beignets Caribbean Restaurant. Its spot at the tip of a diminutive, tired strip center off Barnes Road isn't exactly eye candy to would-be diners. It's not much more eye-popping online. As of press time, Beignets scores only nine entries on the review site Yelp.com [Ed: This will make No. 10]. That's a bit lacking for a place that's been open the same number of years. But for its regulars, and lovers of authentic Haitian, Jamaican and other island-inspired cuisine, I suspect Beignets' fly-under-the-radar marketing approach suits them just fine. I joined my review buddy one recent Tuesday night to investigate the Southside eatery. Beignets is the epitome of a no-frills dining experience. The dining room features a smattering of seven tables and a couple of booths dressed in plastic tablecloths, with a colorful island mural on one wall and a flat-screen humming with the Uruguay/Argentina soccer match on another. Aside from our table, everyone else there fixated on the game. The no-frills theme extends to the menu, a slim, double-sided affair with about 15 lunch and dinner entrees and side orders, including a handful of daily specials. On the flip side, it's a rundown of mostly bottled sodas, juices and shakes from a refrigerated case in the dining room. Sorry, you won't find an alcoholic option among them. Without a list of starters to prep our palates, we jumped right into the entrée action. My selection, the Oxtail ($10.99), came in a mild bowl of broth brimming with white onions, peppers and quite a few braised morsels of bone-in meat. With little effort, the rich, slightly gelatinous meat separated from the small bones for a succulent, delicious finish. Fingers work best here; check your fork and knife on the table. Snag extra napkins from the table dispenser, too. You'll need every one. My friend took a spin with the Jerk Chicken ($8.50), another brothy bowl of finger-licking bone-in meat that packed plenty of heat. Entrees come with your choice of white rice or beans and rice, and fried plantains or salad. Our white rice had a buttery tone and was a nice foil to the over-the-top spice of the jerk chicken. The thick, crisp plantains were instant favorites. For lighter appetites and budgets, check out the Jamaican patty ($1.50 each). This turnover-like pastry had a thin layer of beef filling that resembled black bean paste, with a nice, spicy kick after each bite. You won't find desserts on this menu, although cakes and puddings do make occasional appearances. One dessert in particular got me wondering. Sadly, the French pastry drizzled in powdered sugar that gave Beignets its name isn't available here. Co-owner Thergelie Louis said they did try them once upon a time. But they didn't sell well, so now they don't sell at all. Atmosphere and ambience notwithstanding, Beignets Caribbean Restaurant is a great find that covers the basics without a lot of fuss or fanfare.
